My busiest period comes from November each year, when I will receive a number of emails and texts from friends who want to volunteer with their families on Thanksgiving as a way to give back. I also field phone calls from organizations who want to donate to local programs that provide Thanksgiving meals.
As an official who still works in the nonprofit sector, however, I also feel deeply anxious because I know the other 51 weeks of the year, these critical programs that provide food access to residents in need are starving for both volunteers and donations. Hunger is a year round problem, and each week volunteers are the necessary part to ensure that programs are able to serve the community.
At Food For Free, we rely on about 100 volunteers per week, and each of those volunteers is extremely important to providing fresh, healthy food to people in the Greater Boston area who need it. School children who take backpacks of food home on Fridays, community college students who rely on our Family Meals program to get stronger in class, elderly and disabled residents who receive twice monthly deliveries of food to their doors through our Home Delivery program, — they all rely on us ensuring enough volunteers show up to do the work. These volunteers don’t show up in your social media feeds, they don’t win awards and no one writes about them in the local newspapers. But they are heroes. And you can be too.
If everyone made a promise to volunteer once a month, or even once a quarter, I know that we could reduce some of the anxiety these organizations feel, as a more reliable volunteer network allows them to focus on helping people, not filling volunteer slots.
You can look through our list of a few organizations who are doing critical work in Cambridge to address food insecurity. Offer your time to an organization, they will be deeply grateful—and I am going to bet that you will feel pretty good about yourself too.
24.Why did so many organizations call the author
A.To ask something related emails.
B.To offer donations to poor locals.
C.To broadcast programs for him.
D.To order some food for their works.
25.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.the need for fresh food
B.the duty of Food For Free
C.the value of voluntary work
D.the difficult life of local people
26.What should we learn from the volunteers
A.Showing up in social media.
B.Winning some useful awards.
C.Spreading our life stories.
D.Serving the poor for nothing.
27.What is the author’s aim to write the passage
A.To call readers to be volunteers.

Wal-Mart is not just the world’s largest retailer. It’s the world’s largest company, which sells in three months what number-two retailer Home Depot sells in a year.
Wal-Mart exercises its power for just one purpose: to bring the lowest possible prices to its customers. At Wal-Mart, that goal is never reached. The retailer has a clear policy for suppliers: On basic products that don’t change, the price Wal-Mart will pay, and will charge shoppers, must drop year after year. But what almost no one outside the world of Wal-Mart and none of its 21,000 suppliers know is the high cost of those low prices. To survive in the face of its pricing demands, makers of everything from bikes to jeans have had to close US plants in favor of obtaining products from abroad.
Indeed, the real story of Wal-Mart, the story that never gets told, is the story of the pressure the biggest retailer constantly applies to its suppliers in the name of bringing us “every day low prices”.
The giant retailer’s low prices often come with a high cost. Wal-Mart’s pressure can crush the companies it does business with and force them to send jobs overseas. Are we shopping our way straight to the unemployment line Of course, US companies have been moving jobs offshore for decades, long before Wal-Mart was a retailing power. But there is no question that the chain is helping accelerate the loss of American jobs to low-wage countries such as Thailand.
People ask, “How can it be bad for things to come into the US cheaply ” Sure, it’s great to have bargains. But you can’t buy anything if you’re not employed.
There is no question that Wal-Mart’s drive to squeeze out cost has benefited consumers. By now, it is accepted wisdom that Wal-Mart makes the companies it does business with more efficient and focused. Wal-Mart itself is known for continuous improvement in its ability to handle, move, and track goods. It is legendary for forcing its suppliers to redesign everything from their packaging to their computer systems. It is also legendary for quite straight forwardly telling them what it will pay for their goods.
28.What does the underline word offshore in the passage mean
A.in abroad. B.in the ocean.
C.on the beach. D.on an island not far from shore.
29.Wal-Mart’s low price policy results in
A.more high-paying jobs. B.better designed packages.
C.bigger profit of its partners. D.more jobless American workers.
30.What can we infer from the passage
A.Still more quality goods will be provided.
B.The food you get at Wal-Mart costs least.
C.The value of Wal-Mart is over assessed.
D.Wal-Mart is a very demanding company.
31.What’s the best title for the passage
A.The Fortune Wal-Mart Makes B.The Wal-Mart you don’t know
C.The Biggest Retailer—Wal-Mart D.The Money-saving Tip in Wal-Mart
【答案】28.A 29.D 30.D 31.B
根据上文“Wal-Mart’s pressure can crush the companies it does business with and force them to send jobs overseas.( 沃尔玛的压力会压垮与它有业务往来的公司,迫使它们将工作岗位转移到海外。)”以及划线单词上文“Of course, US companies have been moving jobs(当然,几十年来,早在沃尔玛成为零售巨头之前,美国企业一直在将工作岗位转移到offshore。)” 故选A项。
根据第四段中“Wal-Mart’s pressure can crush the companies it does business with and force them to send jobs overseas. Are we shopping our way straight to the unemployment line ( 沃尔玛的压力可能会压垮与其有业务往来的公司,迫使他们将工作岗位转移到海外。我们是在用购物的方式直接走向失业吗)”可知,沃尔玛的低价政策导致了更多的美国工人失业。故选D项。
30.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Wal-Mart itself is known for continuous improvement in its ability to handle, move, and track goods. It is legendary for forcing its suppliers to redesign everything from their packaging to their computer systems.( 沃尔玛本身就以不断提高其处理、移动和跟踪货物的能力而闻名。它迫使供应商重新设计从包装到电脑系统的一切,这是一个传奇。)”可知,沃尔玛是一家要求非常高的企业,故选D项。
31.主旨大意题。根据第三段中“Indeed, the real story of Wal-Mart, the story that never gets told, is the story of the pressure the biggest retailer constantly applies to its suppliers in the name of bringing us “every day low prices”(事实上,沃尔玛真正的故事——一个从未被人提起的故事——是这家最大的零售商以“每日低价”为名,不断向供应商施加压力的故事。)”

Since the beginning of the summer in 2022, China has been burning hot under the worst heatwave in decades. A number of people in Zhejiang, Henan, Jiangsu and Sichuan provinces were diagnosed with thermoplegia (热射病), the most severe form of heatstroke, and some even died of this disease.
In a warming world, the risks of heatwaves are increasing. According to a study, the number of deaths caused by heatwaves in China has increased rapidly since 1979, from about 4000 persons per year in the 1980s to nearly 16000 persons per year in the 2010s.
“Over the past four decades, the main drivers of the large increase in heatwave-related deaths in China are the rapid increase in the frequency of heatwaves, followed by population growth, population aging, and rising baseline mortality (基线死亡率),” said Prof. Huang Cunrui, a researcher from Tsinghua University.
High temperatures would accelerate the loss in soil moisture (水分) and hurt the growth of corn, cotton, trees and fruits. What’s more, each additional degree of warming will increase crop losses to insects by 10-25 percent, threatening food security for billions of people. China has witnessed a range of extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall, flooding, tornadoes and record heatwaves this year.
Experts say that while extreme summer heat is not entirely new, these sorts of occurrences could be something that becomes a standard part of life, requiring people to start learning how to cope with heatwaves that may continue for the rest of summer and well into the future.
Remember that even healthy, young athletes can be harmed by extreme heat, so every activity, indoors or outdoors, should be evaluated when extreme heat hits. We are supposed to stay safe during extreme heat events, such as drinking plenty of water, looking for shade or remaining in shade when outside, and avoiding cooking large meals that can add heat to your indoor environment.
32.Compared with the 1980s, the deaths from heatwaves per year in the 2010s has increased by _or so.
A.twice B.three times C.four times D.five times
33.What is the main cause of the increasing heatwave-related deaths in China
A.The larger amount of outdoor workers.
B.The aging of the population.
C.The rise in the number of the total population.
D.The increasing frequency of heatwaves.
34.What does the underlined word “accelerate” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.decline. B.regulate. C.quicken. D.advocate.
35.Where would you be most likely to find this passage
A.In a sports journal. B.In a brochure.
C.In a newspaper. D.On a poster board.
根据第二段“According to a study, the number of deaths caused by heatwaves in China has increased rapidly since 1979, from about 4000 persons per year in the 1980s to nearly 16000 persons per year in the 2010s.(根据一项研究,自1979年以来,中国因热浪造成的死亡人数迅速增加,从20世纪80年代的每年约4000人增加到2010年代的每年近16000人。)”
根据第三段中“Over the past four decades, the main drivers of the large increase in heatwave-related deaths in China are the rapid increase in the frequency of heatwaves.(过去40年里,中国与热浪相关的死亡人数大幅增加的主要驱动因素是热浪发生频率的迅速增加。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Since the beginning of the summer in 2022, China has been burning hot under the worst heatwave in decades. A number of people in Zhejiang, Henan, Jiangsu and Sichuan provinces were diagnosed with thermoplegia (热射病), the most severe form of heatstroke, and some even died of this disease.(自2022年入夏以来,中国遭遇了几十年来最严重的热浪。

With our already busy lives, finding time to exercise can feel like one more thing on our “to do” list. So maybe it would help if there was “a best time” to exercise Could exercising at certain times help maximise our fitness goals 36 No matter who you are, or when you like to work out, it is okey.
37 Many of us have more free time compared to later in the day, and it may therefore be easier for us to stick to a morning workout routine. A study published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found that participants who exercised in the morning, increased their physical activity throughout the day, were less distracted by food, and slept better. Exercising on an empty stomach before breakfast could also burn more fat and increase metabolism.
So, good news is for early birds, but what if you’re not a morning person 38 For example, your body’s ability to perform peaks in the afternoon, according to a 2010 study by the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. Also, in the afternoon and evening, your reaction time is quickest, and your heart rate and blood pressure are lowest, which reduce your chance of injury while improving performance.
But our bodies are different, after all, so the best time to exercise may be different too. A 2022 study from Skidmore College, New York, looked at exactly this question and the results showed that there are some differences. Want to reduce your blood pressure and you’re a woman Exercise in the morning. Want to improve your heart health and you’re a man 39 But, ultimately, the study found that there are clear benefits for both sexes to exercising at either time of day.
So what time is best 40
A.Evening is better for you.
B.The answer is ‘yes’, but it’s easier than you think.
C.It seems the answer is: whatever time is best for you!
D.There are clear benefits to exercising in the morning.
E.You can hurt yourself by more exercising in the afternoon or evening.
F.Many people have more free time in the morning than later in the day.
G.Working out in the afternoon or evening also has benefits, just different ones.

One possible version:
Be a good tourist
May 19th is named by the State Council as National Tourism Day. As a matter of fact, some tourists pay little attention to their behavior when enjoying themselves. So I appeal to all of us to be good tourists.
One key phrase I would like to draw your attention to is “traceless travel”, which means you tour a place without posing any threat to the environment. Good tourists leave no traces-no litter, no graffiti and no irritated locals, thus promoting a better tourism culture.
It’s every tourist’s responsibility to speak and act in ways that represent our country’s image and civilization.

“Hey, how are you doing, son ” My father smiled to me. “Not bad, dad, but I’ve decided not to go to university. I want to focus on my music career,” I replied. It would be a harmonious dinner if there was no argument interrupting us. As you know, my father insisted that I should be a teacher all the time because he was a professor while I would like to create a band in the rest of my life. My father got angry, raising his voice: “You can’t be serious. Why not being a teacher You can help students and change their lives.” But I’m not interested in education at all. I just want to work in a studio, not a school. However, my dad thought that a band is not career, even not a job. If I were a lead singer of my band, I would be very happy. I will have new friends, new life, new environment and everything new. “It’s so boring to be a teacher for me, I can’t go to different countries, and I can’t wear popular clothes even!” I couldn’t control myself when I thought about it.
I know teachers are great. They set an example for me, giving me a lot of care and help when I was young. I have never denied this profession, but it is not my dream. Supposing that our human society intends to acquire long-term prosperity, it is advisable for us to do what we really love. Only in this way, can we work productively, efficiently and effectively.

A.in abroad. B.in the ocean.
C.on the beach. D.on an island not far from shore.
29.Wal-Mart’s low price policy results in

C.bigger profit of its partners. D.more jobless American workers.
30.What can we infer from the passage
A.Still more quality goods will be provided.
B.The food you get at Wal-Mart costs least.
C.The value of Wal-Mart is over assessed.
D.Wal-Mart is a very demanding company.
31.What’s the best title for the passage
A.The Fortune Wal-Mart Makes B.The Wal-Mart you don’t know
C.The Biggest Retailer—Wal-Mart D.The Money-saving Tip in Wal-Mart

34.What does the underlined word “accelerate” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.decline. B.regulate. C.quicken. D.advocate.
35.Where would you be most likely to find this passage
A.In a sports journal. B.In a brochure.
C.In a newspaper. D.On a poster board.
