A new discovery has excited mathematicians around the world. Recently unearthed
documents show a decimal point(小 数 点 ) in the records of a businessman named
Giovanni Bianchini, who lived in Venice in the 1440s. Historians think the discovery is
very important as it means the decimal point is 150 years older than they thought before. Bianchíni
was also an excellent astronomer. He kept lots of records of astronomical research. MathernaticianDr
Glen Van Brummelen noticed the use of a decimal point in one of Bianchini's articles between1441
and 1450.
Decimal points are such a necessary part of life today that it seems they would have been used for
thousands of years. Historians say some versions (版 本 ) of decimals have existed for over1,000
years. Records show a form of the mathematical dot being used in some areas of the MiddleEast in
the 900s. It is likely that Bianchini probably went to the Middle East and was inspired by scholars(学
者) there who played an important role in creating many mathematical ideas. In the past, people in
China used a symbol similar to the decimal point in the 1200s. The first time the decimal point was
officially used was in 1593 by a mathematician from Germany named Christopher Clavius when he
was studying astronomy

Wait, have I been here before Have we stood in this exact spot as you said these same words to
me at some point in the past Haven't I seen this very cat pass by this very hallway
already Sometimes, as we experience a new event or pass by a place, we get that feeling that it's not
the first time. We call this déjà vu(既视感), a French phrase that means“already seen”. But what is
déjà vu, and can science explain why it happens
Scientists have tried to use virtual(虚 拟 的 ) reality technology to reproduce it. In one
study, scientists used the video game The Sims to study déjà. vu. For example, they replaced the
bushes in the game's virtual garden with trash cans. When players looked at the garden, they
experienced a sense of déjà vu.
Scientists think déjà vu might be explained as a simple failure of memory. We see something
that looks similar to something we' ve seen before, but our brains fail to find the exact
memory. However, the brain still recognizes the similarity, leaving us with a sense of familiarity (熟
悉感).
Epilepsy (癫痫), a brain disease, is believed to be an extreme example of déjà vu. People with
epilepsy often experience unusual feelings similar to déjà vu.
Should we be worried when we experience déjà vu As long as it doesn't affect our daily
life, researchers think there is no need to worry. In fact, some scientists believe that it may be
helpful. They believe déja vu might be caused by the brain rearranging(重组) misplaced memories.
This could show that our memories are working well. This theory also explains why younger people
are more likely to experience it, as their brains are still growing.
( ) 29. “déjà vu” refers to
A. a dream that happens during sleep
B. a sense of familiarity in a new situation
C. a painful experience in the virtual reality world
第 4 页 共 10 页
( ) 30. How can scientists explain“déjà vú”
A. By experiencing it themselves.
B. By reproducing it in an experimental setting.
C. By studying people who have poor memories.
( ) 31. According to Paragraph 3, what do we know about déjà vu
A. It seldom happens to people with good memories.
B. It shows that our brains are in good shape.
C. It happens when our memories fail.
( ) 32. The last paragraph tells us about
A. the positive sides of déjà vu
B. the influence of déjà vu on memory
C. young people who experience déjà vu

38 The lamplighter on the fifth planet worked tirelessly, following the strict rhythm of his
planet. The geographer on the sixth planet knew much but never explored.
Arriving on Earth, the little prince first met a snake in the desert. Then, in a rose garden,
he was shocked to find thousands of roses, unlike what his rose had claimed. 39
The fox taught him the meaning of" taming" and made him understand that his rose was unique
because of the time and love he had given to her.
As our water ran out, we set out to find a well. On the day before the anniversary(周年纪念)of
his arrival, the prince, with the snake's help, prepared to return to his planet. I watched sadly as he
