Sailing culture is growing among Chinese youth. In Qinhuangdao,a city of the coast, the Sailing
Club has been helping Chinese youth get familiar with sailing for the last 15 years.
In the southwest of Qinhuangdao is Beidaihe, where the sailing club lies. You can see many
sailing dinghies(小帆船) are preparing to set off. They are mainly kids and teenagers who control the
sails of these dinghies. They are learning the basics of sailing.
These sailors are aged 7 to 16. Some of them are already experienced. During the courses of the
seven days, they will spend four hours at sea each day, learning skills from setting up the sail to
reading winds and sailing in different wind conditions.
There are two main parts of the sailing camp. One is sailing courses. The kids will challenge
themselves throughout the courses. They can not just learn the hands-on sailing skills, but also learn
about the weather and how to tell the current(水流) and the wind. Another part is that the camp
creates different activities to make a fun and interesting camp environment for the kids.
The club says there were 180 students among the 1,138 young people signing up for summer
