The school bus usually arrives on time. To avoid missing it, it's a good idea to arrive at the bus
stop at least five minutes early. When waiting, be sure to stay in the safe area and never step into the
street to look for the bus.Remember, the bus stop is not a playground. Don't play or run after others,
as you might fall and get hurt.
When the school bus arrives, be careful when you are around the school bus. If you drop
something near the school bus, the safest thing to do is tell the driver right away. Also, never walk
behind the school bus, because the driver might not see you.
Always wait until the bus comes to a full stop. Once the door opens and the driver says it's safe
to get on or off, line up and don't push anyone. You can hold the handrails(扶手) so that you won't
fall down.
There are some things you should watch out for during the bus ride. Never put your head hands,
or any part of your body out of the window. Some students might leave their bags in the bus aisle(过
道), but this can be dangerous. If there's an emergency, like an accident or a fire, having a clear aisle
is very important for saving
lives. Also, don't shout or make loud noises. That could distract(使分心) the driver.

Jim Martin walked slowly on his way to Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Filled with
excitement, he was still nervous. After all it was his first day of school as a teacher.
As Jim passed through the school gate, a memory hit him. It was about Mrs. Peabody's English
class. Mrs.Peabody gave the class a writing task. Students were asked to write about their summer
vacation. Jim didn't want to write a stupid essay(短文) about his vacation-a water park, two weeks of
camp, and his homework. It was boring. He chose to write a science fiction short story instead. It
was about a planet that didn't have summer---it was spring all the time. He handed in his story but
was worried that he would get an F.
When he got to class the next morning, to his surprise, Mrs. Peabody praised him for his
creativity and imagination. She said, “Just one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked
you to be. Jim Martin is the only one that got an A on the task. Now I'm going to ask him to come up
here and read his story to you, though he should have paid a little more attention to proper spelling
and grammar.
Hands shaking, Jim walked to the front of the classroom gleefully, as if he were the first person
to step onto the surface of Mars. Though it sounded like a small thing that moment made a great
difference to hum.
As Jim walked through the crowded hallway, similar memories came flooding back. Coach
LaBell taught him how to control his anger before he wanted to fight with another boy. Mr. Carter
taught him to love the process of learning, not just the subject itself.
Jim hoped that he would make a difference to his students like what his teachers had done. The
bell rang.
He took a deep breath and walked into the classroom. “Good morning, everyone, " he said.
( ) 29. Why didn't Jim want to write an essay about his summer vacation
A. He didn't like writing essays at all.
第 4 页 共 10 页
B. He was better at writing science fiction.
C. He did nothing interesting during the vacation.
( ) 30. What did Mrs. Peabody think of Jim's story
A. It was perfect. B. It needed some improvement. C. It was a little strange.
( ) 31. How did Coach LaBell and Mr. Carter influence Jim
A. They taught him important life lessons.
B. They encouraged him to become a teacher.
C. They helped him improve his writing skills.

A. Jim thought his first day as a teacher was fun.
B. Jim was worried about his students' performance.
C. Jim hoped to make a difference in his students' lives.

If you want to learn about bringing back extinct(灭绝的) animals, reading JohnSmith's Back
from the Dead is a good start. But I have to say I can't agree with everything he says.
From his book,I can see Smith is an advocate of bringing extinct animals back. He says we have
lost many animals because we made their living spaces too dirty. He also thinks we must do
everything we can to bring them back, However, I don't know how much time and money we would
need to make the world a better place for them, and honestly no one knows if they could actually
come back.
Smith also says that bringing back extinct animals may be good for us. He talks about an extinct
frog that grew tadpoles(蝌蚪) in its stomach, Some women's babies die before they are born, and
Smith believes bringing back the frog may be an answer to the problem. According to him, by
studying how the tadpoles grow inside the frog's stomach, we might be able to find new ways to help
these women successfully keep their babies. But I don't think things are as easy as Smith thinks. We
have spent ten years and million. of dollars on this kind of frog, but all we have got are only a few
dead frog eggs. If we can't see a real frog, how can we be sure women will get the help they need
Dr, Solomon Wang from the Animal Saving Office says the study of bringing back extinct
animals is“throwing good money after bad.” And he's right. A lot of hard work has been put into this
expensive dream, but we haven't seen anything come out of it. So should we still keep going down
this road
( ) 33. What does it mean when someone is an advocate of something

第 5 页 共 10 页
A. It can live in a dirty living space.

A. To start a new topic.
B. To share a big dream.
C. To make her idea clearer.
( ) 36. What does Ellen Zimmer most likely think about bringing back extinct animals
A. It is possible.
B. It is dangerous.
C. It is not possible.
