“Where is it ” Mina cried. She was standing at the dining table, working on a puzzle. Mina could not find the last piece.
“What’s this ” asked Mina’s little brother, Robert. He had a piece of paper in his hand.
“Give it to me,” Mina shouted. She snatched the paper from Robert.
“Please don’t be so mean (刻薄的) to me,” said Robert.
“Shut up!” Mina shouted.
That night, Mina thought about the paper from Robert. She soon realized that “it” was the puzzle piece.
A loud alarm awakened her. Mina had fallen asleep while thinking about the words. Mina decided not to worry about the paper and went on with her day.
At school, she read a book about two really mean girls. “They’re so mean!” Mina said. Suddenly, something ran through her mind. There were times when she, too, was mean. Mina’s feet grew heavier and heavier as the day went by.
Soon, there were five minutes left in Mina’s last and favorite class, science. Her class was doing a project. Mina walked over to one of her classmates, Sonali.
“Give me your pencil,” Mina asked. “I left mine at home.”
“Oh, sure,” Sonali said kindly, “I’d be happy to help.”
Just then, Sonali’s kindness made Mina realize that she shouldn’t be so mean again. She didn’t let anyone borrow her things. She looked at Sonali.
“I’m sorry for being so impolite. Thanks for your pencil,” Mina smiled and returned to her desk.
After school, Mina gave Robert a huge hug and for her impolite behavior. She felt much better after the hug. That night, as Mina got into bed, she noticed the puzzle piece on the table. She smiled and made a decision…

Plunk! I dropped another pecan (山核桃) into my basket. Then a gentle autumn wind blew some more off the tree. I ran to pick them up. Whew! Pecan picking was hard. My basket was only half full.
I was visiting my grandpa’s farm in Kansas, and Grandpa sent me into the woods to pick up pecans for us to enjoy later. I wasn’t about to let him down.
Then something caught my eye: a squirrel picked up a pecan, climbed up a tree and disappeared into a large hole. A moment later, the squirrel climbed down to the ground to pick another pecan. Once again, he took the pecan back to his secret hiding place inside the hollow (洞) of the tree.
Not so secret anymore, I thought. I ran over to the tree and found the hollow was filled with sweet pecans. They were right there for the taking. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I took all the pecans from the hollow. Now the basket was full!
I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all of the pecans I’d collected.
“Look, Grandpa,” I shouted, “look at all of the pecans I found!”
Grandpa took a look at my basket. “Well, well, how did you find so many, Jimmy ” I told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place. Grandpa congratulated me on finding out something about the squirrel’s habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.
“That squirrel worked very hard to collect his winter food,” he said. “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will be very hungry when it gets cold ”
“I didn’t think about that,” I said.
“I know,” Grandpa said. “But a good man should never take advantage of someone else’s hard work, even the squirrel’s.”
Suddenly I felt as hollow as that old tree. The image (形象) of that hungry squirrel wouldn’t leave my mind. There was only one thing I could do.

三、U3单元话题期末热点预测:树木的重要性/会变色的树叶
Why do the leaves on trees have different colors What makes them change their colors
Leaves use sunlight, water and air to make food for the trees. This way of making food is called photosynthesis (光合作用). Photosynthesis is important to animals as well as plants. Some animals eat plants. Other animals eat these animals.
Summer is playtime. For the leaves of many trees, however, it’s work, work, work! The sun is shining. The leaves are making food for the trees. The trees keep more than enough food deep inside. Leaves are green in summer because they are making food. Leaves also have orange, yellow, or brown colors inside them. During summer, those colors are covered by the green color.
Many places get colder in autumn with shorter days and longer nights. Trees get less sunlight, so photosynthesis slows down. Over time, leaves stop making the green chemical (化学物质). The orange, yellow, and brown colors grow when that happens.
Once it gets cold enough and ice appears at night, the trees drop their leaves. They do this to keep themselves safe. If the leaves are icy while still on the trees, the trees can be hurt. Trees that drop their leaves are bare (光秃秃) in winter. They use the food they save in summer to get through the cold days and nights.
Spring comes before long. Ice and snow disappear and the rains come. The sun shines, and tiny leaves grow from branches. Once again, the leaves use sunlight, water and air to make food. The cycle begins again.
1.What is photosynthesis according to the passage
A.It is a way of growing leaves. B.It is a way of changing colors.
C.It is a way to make food for plants. D.It is a way for animals to eat plants.
2.Why are leaves green in summer
A.Because some animals eat plants.
B.Because summer is playtime for the leaves of many trees.
C.Because there is no other color inside leaves in summer.
D.Because they are busy making food for the trees.
3.What stops leaves from making the green chemical in autumn
A.Less air in autumn. B.Less sunlight in autumn.
C.Less water in autumn. D.Less time in autumn.
4.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A.The trees. B.The leaves. C.The colors. D.The animals.

1.细节理解题。根据第二段“This way of making food is called photosynthesis (光合作用).”可知,光合作用是植物制作食物的方法。故选C。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段“Leaves are green in summer because they are making food.”可知,树叶在夏天是绿色的,因为它们正在为树制造食物。故选D。
3.细节理解题。根据第四段“Trees get less sunlight, so photosynthesis slows down.”可知,秋天树叶停止产生绿色化学物质是因为阳光减少。故选B。
4.词句猜测题。根据第五段“Once it gets cold enough and ice appears at night, the trees drop their leaves. They do this to keep themselves safe. If the leaves turn to ice while still on the trees, the trees can be hurt.”
根据第一段“Why do the leaves on trees have different colors What makes them change color ”及通读全文可知,本文主要介绍了树叶的颜色及为什么会变色,故“树叶的颜色”符合本文标题。故选C。
Trees are one of the oldest plants of our Earth. They keep the air clean, make less noise pollution, make water cleaner and provide food and building materials.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At one to three years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns to stop animals from going near.
At the age of four, trees begin to grow very quickly and become strong enough to face many difficulties later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.
When a tree is 20 to 25 years old, it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. Not only does the adult tree give us shade (树荫), oxygen and natural beauty, it is also a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book. If the adult tree can have a good care, it will go on to live healthily for many years.
Little by little, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow (空心的) or part of it becomes dead, it becomes a home to small animals and a source (来源) of food for many other animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience. When looking at the life of a tree, we learn that each period (时期) of life brings its own kind of happiness and difficulties. Enjoy every minute of the life of trees and take care of them.
1.What does the underlined word “thorns” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese

3.What can we learn from this passage
A.The life of trees is the same as the life of people.
B.Older trees can make great places for people to rest.
C.You can find a lot of flowers and fruit on young adult trees.
D.An adult tree can live long and well if we all learn how to protect them.

Dear humans,
It’s the first time that I have written to you, my children. I used to send you many messages. But you always overlooked (忽略) them. So I wanted to write you a letter.
At the very beginning, let me tell you more about our family. Dear humans, besides you, I have many other children. Some of them swim in water; Some live in ice-covered places; some run in the grasslands.

They might be very close to you, or even live in your house. But there are others that you may never meet.
You bring them home to be your pets, friends and helpers. You put them in zoos. You kill them for their meat and fur. And you even hunt them for fun. They bring you money and happiness, but they also bring illness and death.
I hope you can remember that wild animals are not your food or clothes. They are not killers, either. They are, in fact, your brothers and sisters.
Humans, you are clever and hard-working. You have colourful cultures and advanced technologies. You can decide (决定) where you go, and where I go.
But you don’t respect (尊重) me. You change my weather, my lands, my rivers ... You ask so much of me, more than what I can give you. I’m worried that one day you will be lonely.

五、U5单元话题期末热点预测:水的重要性及现状/水的智慧和启示
All living things on the Earth need water to live. Yet humans are facing serious water problems. According to the United Nations, today over 663 million people live without a safe water supply close to home.
To remind people of the importance of water, the UN first set up World Water Day in 1993. It is on March 22 each year. From March 22 to 28 is also the China Water Week. The first year’s theme is “Waste water”. It tried to call on people to reuse waste water instead of wasting it.
In Australia people make good use of waste water. Most Australians have a grass lawn around their home instead of washing the car in the street. Many of them wash it on the lawn to keep the grass longer so that it covers the ground and reduce evaporation (蒸发).
Rainwater may seem useless to you. But you can also reuse it. People in Germany collect rainwater to wash their toilets. Most houses in the country that are built in the last few years have rainwater collection devices (设备). Rainwater is collected from the root, and then linked to the toilet. But if you don’t have the device just put a bucket (桶) under your roof when it rains.
Water makes up 71 percent of the Earth’s surface. But we can only use a very small part of it. Only about 3 percent of the world’s water is fresh water. It’s in lakes, rivers and underground.
Over 80 percent of the waste water in the world goes back into the nature. It has not been cleaned and pollutes the rivers and lakes. Unsafe water makes around 842 ,000 people die each year.
By 2030, about half of the world’s population could be facing water problem. By 2050, as many as seven billion people across the world could not have enough water supplies. The world’s population might be 9. 3 billion by then.

A.collect rainwater to wash their toilets
B.remind people of the importance of water

March 22 is World Water Day. People think water is the source of all life. Water has been part of Chinese culture for thousands of years. It affects not only the start of Chinese civilization but also many smart ideas in Chinese philosophy.
Chinese civilization is one of the ancient river civilizations in the world. It started thousands of years ago along the Yellow and Yangtze rivers. So, Chinese culture has been related to water from the very beginning.
But the relationship between people and water has two sides. Water is very important for life and for growing things. But if we can’t manage it well, it can bring big problems. Knowing how powerful water is, Chinese people have always tried to use it in the best way. For example, Yu, the first ruler of the Xia Dynasty in stories, controlled floods. He changed and dug the waterways so that the water could flow into the sea easily. The Dujiangyan irrigation (灌溉) system in Sichuan was built cleverly. It made full use of the natural features of the place without hurting the environment.
Water also has philosophical meanings in China. These meanings are used to teach people and help rule the country. According to Xunzi (《荀子》), Confucius often thought about water. He believed water had good qualities like fairness and courage. He once said, “Wise people like water; kind people like mountains (智者乐水,仁者乐山)..” So, Confucianism tells people to learn from water and develop their sense of right and wrong. Inspired by water, Laozi came up with the ideas of “using softness to beat hardness (以柔克刚)” and “doing nothing against nature”. These ideas later kept inspiring rulers to follow the laws of nature and respect what people want. Ancient Chinese philosopher Xunzi compared a ruler and his people to a boat and water. He said, “Water can carry a boat, but it can also turn the boat over.”
Water is everywhere in our daily life. It is a very important part of Chinese culture. It helps build Chinese civilization.

It’s there, but it has no weight, no colour, and you can’t smell it. You can’t see it, but it’s working everywhere in our modern world. Don’t try to touch it! It’s dangerous. It has always existed, but humans learned about it only 500 years ago.
What is it Electricity. It’s powerful and mysterious. Thanks to electricity, you can flick a switch (开关) and have light. Watched a good TV show lately You couldn’t do that without electricity. We cook our food, heat our homes and run our computers using electricity. But what is it, really
Here is a simple description. Everything in the world is made of atoms (原子). Atoms are small. You can fit millions of them on the head of a pin. In every atom, there are electrons (电子), protons (质子) and neutrons (中子). In some atoms, it is possible to move electrons easily from one atom to another. As the electrons move, a current (电流) is created. This is electricity.
Don’t worry if you don’t understand it fully. Just remember that electricity is the result of the movement of electrons. As the electrons move, they create a strong electric charge.
There are many ways to generate electricity. A machine called a generator spins (旋转) rapidly. Water and wind can make a generator spin. So can motors fuelled by oil. As the generator spins, the electrons begin to move. As they move, they create an electric current. Power lines (电线) are built from generators to carry this current to places where people can use it. Along your street, power lines bring electricity right to your door. A wire runs into your house. More wires inside your house are attached to the plugs. Plug in your lamp, the electricity lights up the bulb, and you have light!
It takes a lot of energy to make electricity. Oil is one of the main fuels (燃料) used to power electric generators. Another common fuel is coal. Our planet is running out of these resources, and using them creates a lot of pollution.
In the future, most electricity will be produced using the sun and wind. But for now, be careful about how much electricity you use. Don’t forget to turn off the lights when you leave a room. Every little bit helps.

Some are as small as your fingernails (手指甲), such as bees; some are as big as cars, such as elephants.
So, humans, grow up to be more responsible (负责任的). I hope you and all the wild life can live happily in my arms.
Yours,
Mother Earth

Until the late 1800s, most people went to bed soon after sunset. They used candles and oil for light. American inventor Thomas Edison changed the way people lived when he invented the first light bulb. The light bulb was just one of the more than 1000 inventions of this great inventor.
Thomas Alva Edison was born in 1847. He attended school for only three months. His mother taught him reading and writing at home.
In 1862, Edison saved a boy from being run over by a train. The boy’s father operated a telegraph machine. In order to thank him, the father taught Edison how to operate the telegraph. Edison then made improvements to the telegraph. He earned money from his inventions.
In 1876, Edison started the first research laboratory in New Jersey. He worked very hard. He lived in his laboratory and became rich because of his inventions. He married twice and had six children. But he worked so hard that he spent little time with his families.
Edison’s greatest inventions included an improved telephone, photograph and electric battery. He is best remembered for inventing the long-lasting light bulb.
