My grandfather is eighty years old. He always complains about how fast things have changed, and he often says that life used to be better.
Families aren’t the ones the way they used to be. A lot of families have broken up. If husband and wife have problems with their marriage, they no longer stay together. And mothers used to stay at home and take care of their children, but now everyone is busy working. No one has time to look after children at home.
And the cars! No one walks anymore; more and more people drive. We used to walk five miles to school on schooldays, even in winter. But now we don’t. And in school, children don’t have to think anymore. In math class, for example, we used to add, subtract(减), multiply(乘) and divide (除) using our heads. But now kids don’t use their heads anymore; instead, they use calculators (计算器).
Most families have computers now. In the past we didn’t have computers. We didn’t even have lights. My mother used to spend all day cooking in the kitchen. But now we don’t often eat home - cooked food. And people talk less to each other than before. They are too busy to talk, too busy to eat, too busy to think.
Life used to be simple, but it isn’t anymore.
( ) 24. How does the grandfather feel about life now
A. He feels it is more convenient.
B. He thinks it’s worse than it used to be.
C. He believes families are happier than before.
( ) 25. What does the writer imply(暗示) about the use of calculators in math class
A. It’s a good way to improve math skills.
B. It is necessary for modern math learning.
C. It makes children less able to think by themselves.
( ) 26. Why might people talk less to each other now according to the passage
A. They are too busy with work and other things.
B. They prefer using computers to communicate.
C. They don’t know how to talk to each other.
( ) 27. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The advantages of modern life.
B. The grandfather’s simpler childhood.
C. The changes in life and the grandfather’s view.
C
Smartphones are getting boring. The new models are either a bit faster or have better cameras, but they are basically no different from the ones already in our pockets. This is why scientists are hoping, and working for something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smartphones do. At the moment, the next invention might be smart glasses.
Just imagine. Instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen, all of the information you need simply appears just in front of you, in your glasses. Satellite navigation (导航) directions would appear right there on the road. And your smart glasses could guide you to the right shelf in the supermarket!
Smart glasses could also be used in industry. They could show engineers the instructions they need to fix things more quickly. A doctor could carry out a difficult operation, guided in real time by someone on the other side of the world.
This may sound impossible. But most of the technologies to invent them are already there. For example, one key technology is called AR, which can make digital 3D objects appear as if they are part of the real world. We’ve used it a lot on our video calls. Similarly, huge progress has been made in spatial audio(空间音频). This is when a sound is made to give it a sense of place, like what you hear in an empty room. Some high-end earphones can already do that. Future glasses will of course need to recognize (识别) your voice to do tasks. This technology has been widely used in our daily life.
So, why aren’t we all wearing smart glasses yet So far, no one has invented a good way to send images (映像) of our world onto glasses. However, with the rapid development of technology, smart glasses could arrive much sooner than we think.
( ) 28. Why does the writer mention smartphones in Paragraph 1
A. To start a story. B. To introduce a topic. C. To discuss a problem.
( ) 29. What are Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about
A. Where smart glasses could be used.
B. When smart glasses might be made.
C. How smart glasses would give directions.
( ) 30. Which of the following technologies needs to be improved to invent smart glasses
A. Recognizing voices.
B. Creating digital 3D objects.
C. Sending images onto glasses.
( ) 31. How might the writer feel about the future of smart glasses
A. Satisfied. B. Confident. C. Uncertain.

People celebrate fire in different situations, especially the Torch (火把) Festivals in ethnic groups (少数民族) in China.
Dancing and singing, the Yi people and visitors have fun around the fire during the Torch Festival in Bijie, Guizhou Province, on Aug. 12. Every year, the Yi ethnic group (彜族) lights torches to show they look up to the fire.
The early Yi people lived in high and cold places in the mountains. They used fire for light, to stay warm, and cook food. One old saying there goes, “Everything you eat must ‘see’ fire.” In the old days, people lit a small fire outside the door before they took animal meat into the house. They put the meat over the fire to drive away bad luck. Fire was also used to light leaves on the ground to make the land rich.
But the festival is more of a social event now. During the festival, both the Yi people and visitors come
together. They show and spread their happiness and thanks for a good life. The Yi people also want to get more people to learn about their life.
Many other ethnic groups also look up to fire. Take the Naxi people for example. They also have a torch festival. During the festival, each family has a big torch. But the children have their own small torches. They even go out in different groups to pick flowers and bamboo branches(竹枝) to make their torches beautiful. To the Naxi children, this festival means good food and a good time to stay with their family.
56. When do people in Bijie celebrate the Torch Festival
57. Why did the early Yi people use fire to light leaves on the ground
