When everyone’s so busy, it can be hard to keep in touch with the people who matter. Leela Morris’s solution was to set up a book club to regularly get all of her favourite people in one place.
“I had a series of conversations with people who said things like: ‘I enjoy reading, and I don’t want to party as much any more,’” says 34-year-old Leela Morris, recalling how the book club she founded seven years ago came into being. Her friend and fellow book club member Eva Roberts, 35, laughs in agreement: “I remember texting you on my way back from a party, thinking: ‘I’m too old for this, I need something a bit more healthy!’”
And they weren’t alone. Soon Morris had gathered a group of five other regular members including her mum Linda. “Then there’s Paige, who I used to work with, and Astrid, who I lived with in Paris,” Roberts adds, going on to mention “horse-crazy” Abi, and Louisa, who’s originally from Brazil, and who was looking for a few more friends in London.
As she continues, it’s clear to see the appreciation for the friendships strengthened through the club, as well as the conversations shared and the memories made. Put simply, Roberts says, they all just “click”.
The friends insist there have never been any heated arguments over the books’ themes or topics—instead, they say, it has really helped “open up conversations” among the group. “Because there are no rules—apart from whoever chooses the book, hosts the gathering event—there are no limits to what is chosen. In some book clubs it’s only fiction, but here there are no limits and you read things you wouldn’t normally read,” says Morris. “The different viewpoints have really opened my eyes to lots of books and subjects.”
24.What did Morris and Roberts both consider in their 30s
A.Joining fewer parties. B.Reading more books.
C.Making more friends. D.Eating less fast-food.
25.Who was a roommate of Roberts
A. Abi. B.Louisa. C.Paige. D. Astrid.
26.What does Roberts probably mean by saying they “click”
A.They are always on time.
B.They do similar jobs.
C.They enjoy a deep friendship.
D.They have various personalities.
27.What’s the rule of Morris’s book club
A.Fiction cannot be chosen.
B.Who picks the book is the host.
C.Arguments are not allowed.
D.The events are hosted by turns.
C
You might not have noticed, but most modern hotels hide their stairways for safety, security or beauty. So people tend to be surprised when they see someone running up them.I know this because I’m a Stairs Guy now.
Still, I’m not alone. Stair running is a pastime on the rise, at least if you look at the amount of events on it. The first ever full-scale tower race, reportedly, took place at the Eiffel Tower in 1905, with about 300 runners climbing a mere two levels (729 steps) of the monument. More events followed, but it took a while before the sport spread to the UK in 1968, and the US in 1978. Today, hundreds of events across dozens of countries allow the light-limbed and big-bodied to race each other up some of the world’s most recognizable skyscrapers (摩天大楼).
“My first love is running, and I miss long-distance running races terribly, but my body can’t afford it any more after many years—so stair climbing works very well for me. There’s much less harm, but it’s still extremely challenging,” says Suzy Walsham, who competed in lots of marathons before making the move to stair running. “It’s also a very individual sport and probably two-thirds of the races are time trials—so you are racing against the building and the clock,” he explains. And, of course, it’s fast. The best runners can climb the 1,576 steps of the Empire State Building Run-Up in less than 10 minutes.
Marathon runners often struggle as stair races require lactic acid tolerance and a degree of anaerobic (无氧的) fitness (which works when you’re moving too fast to use oxygen for fuel) as well as the aerobic kind used for longer efforts. “I’ve been faster in the stairs than people who were 10 minutes faster than me over a half marathon,” says Walsham.
28.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.The benefits of stair running.
B.The matches of stair running.
C.The tallest buildings in the world.
D.The development of stair running.
29.Why did Walsham move to stair running
A.Its cost is not high. B.It’s not very challenging.
C.It’s suitable for his body. D.Its popularity has grown.
30.Why is the Empire State Building Run-Up mentioned
A.To stress the speed of stair running.
B.To praise those runners.
C.To introduce this match.
D.To show the difficulty of stair running.
31.What can be learned from the last paragraph
A.Walsham needs more aerobic exercise.
B.Walsham usually runs fast in marathons.
C.Marathon runners often join stair races.
D.Marathon differs much from stair races.
D
Apes (类人猿) recognize photos of peers they haven’t seen for more than 25 years and respond even more enthusiastically to pictures of their friends, a new study finds.
The research team was inspired to pursue the question of how long apes remember their peers because of their own experiences working with apes—the sense that the animals recognized them when they visited, even if they’d been away for a long while.
The team worked with apes at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland, Planckendael Zoo in Belgium, and Kumamoto Sanctuary in Japan. The researchers collected photographs of apes that had either left the zoos or died, which means that participants hadn’t seen them for at least nine months and in some cases for as long as 26 years.
The team invited apes to participate in the experiment where the apes were shown two side-by-side photographs—apes they’d once known and total strangers. Using a non-invasive eye-tracking device, the team measured where the apes looked and for how long. The result showed the apes looked significantly longer at former peers,no matter how long they’d been apart. And they looked longer still at their former friends, those they’d had more positive interactions with.
The results suggest great ape social memory could last beyond 26 years, the majority of their 40 to 60-year average lifespan, and could be comparable to that of humans, which begins to decline after 15 years but can persist as long as 48 years after separation, say the authors of the study. Such long lasting social memory in both humans and our closest relatives suggests that this kind of memory was likely already present millions of years ago in our common evolutionary ancestors. But the work also raises the question of whether the apes are missing individuals they’re no longer with, especially their friends and family.
32.What inspired the team to study apes’ memory
A.Their interest in apes. B.A previous study on apes.
C.Apes’ reaction to seeing them. D.A tourist’s experience in a zoo.
33.What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refers to
A.The photos of apes. B.Apes in the photos.
C.Apes in the zoos now. D.The researchers of the team.
34.What data about apes were collected in the experiment
A.How long they saw the photos.
B.The body movements of them.
C.How long they remembered the peers.
D.The number of photos they recognized.
35.What can we know from the study in paragraph 5
A.Humans’ memory will decline over time.
B.Apes’ memory can last beyond 48 years.
C.Apes’ ancestors may have long social memory.
D.Apes would miss their former peers and friends.

Stand-up is a type of comedy in which someone performs a series of jokes in front of a live audience. It can easily receive a favourable response from the audience. If you want to create a stand-up comedy act to perform for family and friends, here are some tips to help you get started.
Write your material. 36 Many comedians talk about their personal experiences or make humorous comments about popular topics. Think about who your audience will be and what will be relatable to them. For example, your classmates would probably understand your funny comments about middle school, but your family may not. 37 It should have an attractive beginning, followed by a middle that sets up characters or provides information people need to know to understand the joke.
Pull everything together.Once you have several jokes written, you can add them to a stand-up routine, called a “set”.A set can be short or long, but for beginners it’s best to keep it short. 38 Between jokes, include transitions to help link one story to the next. You should conclude with a strong “closer”, one last joke that will leave your audience laughing.
39 Once you’ve created your set, it’s time to practice. You can perform in front of a mirror or record yourself and play it back. This will help you see how long your set is and where you might make changes. Next, perform in front of friends or family members who can help you see if any of your jokes are confusing. 40
When you’re ready to perform, remember to take a few deep breaths. Then relax, be yourself, and have fun!
A.Plan a performance.
B.Perfect your routine.
C.Take notes and make changes when necessary.
D.To begin writing jokes, start brainstorming topics.
E.Open your set with a joke that will get your audience laughing.
F.Once you feel comfortable with your material, it’s time to perform.
G.When you have an idea for a joke, approach it by writing a short text.

I was overjoyed. The final cuts for the school basketball team were over and I was still around. I had a false sense of safety when I went to practice on Monday. When my teammates and I were doing our practice as usual, my coach asked me to one side and then told me the last thing I wanted to hear, “Steve, I’ve been thinking about it. There seemed not much progress in your skills, so I’m afraid we aren’t going to need you any more. You can finish today’s practice if you want.”
The whole team had stopped practice and they were staring at me as if they could see through the seemingly brave boy whose heart was actually broken. “That’s okay, Coach,” I said and walked out of the gym into the locker room (更衣室).
Alone in the empty locker room, I stood and stared at my locker. Memories of the past training came flooding. How I wished I had worked harder!
Suddenly I realized my bag was still in the gym. I didn’t have the courage to go back, so I walked out to the track and up to the top of the bleachers (露天看台). There was an hour and a half left before the practice was over. I sat there and waited. When five o’clock came, I ran through the back door, took my bag and rushed out, just hoping to avoid any of my former teammates.
Worse still, I was afraid of having to face my father who would be outside to pick me up today. After getting into the car, he asked, “How was the practice ” I only said “Fine” and kept silent the rest of the ride home.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

第一节
One possible version:
Dear Amy,
Sorry to learn that you are in a dilemma of whether to quit the school dance club. I can relate to you because I’ve been there before, and here are my opinions.
I think a dance club can offer numerous benefits, such as providing an outlet for stress. However, it is important to find a balance between study and extracurricular activities. It might be helpful to communicate with your teachers about your concerns as they can offer possible solutions. Besides, why not manage your time effectively by making a workable schedule
I’m sure you can find a solution that works best for you.

第二节
One possible version:
Upon arrival, my father, who obviously noticed something unusual, started the talk. “Is everything going on well, boy ” he asked. This simple question, after I had been thinking about what a loser I was all the way, opened my mind. “I was cut out of my basketball team,” I owned up to my failure, tears streaming down my face. My father gave me an encouraging pat on the shoulder with the words “Never mind” and suggested that if I practiced hard from now on, all my efforts would pay off one day. Soaking into my heart, his words witnessed my efforts on the basketball court the next several months.
The next year the basketball team wanted new players. I took all my courage to sign up for the tryout after one year’s tireless practice. Back to the same gym, I took a deep breath and moved and jumped gracefully. Obviously it was a roaring success. The coach along with my former teammates was surprised to find what great progress I had made. What had been the location of my defeat became my symbol of success and deep down in my heart. I knew it could not have been achieved without my father’s encouragement, my hard work and most importantly my adoption of the mindset—“I’ll show you”.

M:It starts at 7 pm.
W:Oh, but I told Bobby that we could go out for pizza tonight.I can’t break my promise.
M:We can all get pizza together, then buy the tickets and go to the concert.
W:Sounds like a good plan. How much are the tickets
M:Thirty dollars for each adult and half that price for each child under 10 years old.
W:Good.Bobby is only 8.

W:Hello, Noah.You look upset.What happened
M:Hi, Ava.My cousin John promised to attend the summer camp with me yesterday, but later he told me that he couldn’t go.
W:That’s not a big deal.I can go with you.
M:That’s so nice of you. It’s a camp in Australia. It costs 4,000 dollars one person. But if we go together, it only needs 5,000 dollars in total.
W:Wow, great! What activities does it have
M:Well, we’ll spend most of our time learning English. In our spare time, we’ll visit some museums and play games together.
W:I can’t wait to be there.
M:Me too.

W:Darling, we spend most of our time staying at home.Let’s choose an activity, an outdoor one, for the weekends and holidays.
M:OK.I feel bored staying at home and playing board games. How about going fishing We could go to the river, or even down to the lake.
W:Well, I think I’d prefer to do something a bit more exciting.Perhaps we could try sea surfing.
M:It’s cool, but we can’t afford that.I think we should do something cheaper or, better still, free!
W:Why don’t we go rock climbing That’s free, and it can be exciting, too.
M:Hmm.I think it’d be better to do something less dangerous.
W:OK, let me see...I know. What about mountain biking It’s quite safe and cheap.
M:That sounds great. We could ride through the hills and into the forest.

W:My uncle Meyer has done many great things in his life.He has taught history for the past 45 years. He encouraged many young people to love history. Many of them were thankful for his help, and they sent letters and emails on Teachers’ Day.Another great thing he has done is that he has always been a great teacher outside the classroom. When we were children, he took us to libraries on Saturdays and museums on Sundays, giving us lots of opportunities to learn more various knowledge, which broadened our horizons. To my surprise, he also gave money to support museums. The third great thing is that he never stops learning. He always tells us “You are never too old to learn.” He is 68 now, but he spends much time every day learning Chinese now.He is going to travel to China next year.I have learned a lot from my uncle, and he is always my role model.
