“Chi le ma ” is a Chinese greeting that can often cause cultural misunderstandings. Some foreign textbooks teach that “Chi le ma ” is still a common phrase used in China to mean “Hello!” However, when foreigners use the phrase in China, they are sometimes met with funny looks. But why is this What does “Chi le ma ” actually mean Where did the phrase come from, and how is it used in today's China
“Chi le ma ” is translated as “Have you eaten ”, which may sound a little strange as a greeting to some people. So how did this eating phrase become a greeting One idea comes from traditional Chinese culture, where food was considered to be important in people’s lives. In fact, an old Chinese saying says, “Min yi shi wei tian.” which means “The common people treat food as heaven. So, it is understandable that eating would be a common subject of discussion.
Another reason for the phrase may come from a lack of food. In the past, people didn’t always have enough food to cat, so asking if someone had eaten was a way to show one’s care about others’ health.
Today, however, many Chinese people think that “Chi le ma ” is an out-of-date greeting. These days, when a Chinese person asks “Chi le ma ”, it may actually be an invitation for dinner! How do young people greet each other nowadays in China They are more likely to use the simple greeting “Ni hao!” (Hello). And when people are already familiar with each other, they might say “Hai!” (Hi), “Hei!” (Hey), or even “Ha lou! (Hello).
However, “Chi le ma ” sometimes is still used in Northern China. It is most often spoken by older people when they greet friends and neighbors. Therefore, “Chi le ma ” is still a good, polite greeting to use when we speak to older Chinese people.
16. Why might foreigners be met with funny looks when they ask “Chi le ma ” in China
A. Because it shows that they are humorous.
B. Because it’s an old phrase that many people don’t use now.
C. Because it’s a phrase that only Chinese people should use.
D. Because it’s rude in China to ask about someone’s eating habits.
17. “Chi le ma ” was a popular phrase in the past because ________.
A. everyone liked discussing food B. people were interested in others’ food
C. people liked to invite others to dinner D. people’s lives strongly depended on food
18. When a Chinese person asks you “Chi le ma ” nowadays, he or she may ________.
A. say goodbye to you B. invite you to have a dinner
C. ask you to pay for a dinner D. care about your eating habit
19. In Northern China, greeting one’s grandpa with “Chi lema ” shows ________.
A. shyness B. politeness C. scare D. humor
20. What is the passage mainly about
A. Tips on using the phrase “Chi le ma ” B. The history of using the phrase "Chi le ma ”
C. The importance of the greeting “Chi le ma ” D. An introduction to the phrase “Chi le ma ”

Although many people read online, books have not gone out of fashion, in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, lucky passengers may find books somewhere on the underground.
The Fair, an online publishing company, has put 10000 books on the underground, planes and taxis to make people more interested in reading. This project is called “Mobook”.
“Mobook” gets its idea from “Books on the Underground” a community project in London. The purpose of “Books on the Underground” is to encourage people to read more. Zhang Wei, the CEO of the Fair, also wanted to do something in China. He sent an e-mail to Ms Cordelia Oxley, the leader of “Books on the Underground”, describing his plan and explaining the rules of “Mobook”. The leader replied to him in just two hours, saying that she thought the idea was great and she would offer help if needed.
But “Mobook” project is a little different from that in London. It has its own online system. People who want to donate books must give their information online. QR code stickers (二维码标签) are then set to their addresses. The book owners should stick them on the books and readers before donating books and readers can know where the books are with the help of QR codes.
