There has been a battle raging in my living room-a deep-rooted standoff that began when I was a child of about nine. That is the age I was when my parents purchased a second-hand piano to support my continuing musical training.
Some may characterize it as a love-hate relationship, even though I believe the bond between us is more than that. Of course, on the "hate" side there were plenty of frustrating hours spent practicing, the forced performances for relatives, the trimmed fingernails, and the responsibility I had to shoulder, as my family sacrificed a lot for me to have piano lessons, because I had talent. My teachers said so and, truthfully, my heart said so, too. But all too often it felt like a burden.
There was also love on that piano bench. There were times when I could feel the music ring through me. I could feel it vibrate through my fingers. The connection between two people when performing a duet was beautiful. When my music landed on my audience, it made me want to play forever.
But my musical talent did not survive my teenage years. It was no competition for the freedom I sought and eventually fought for. When I had a home of my own, the piano mostly sat unloved or at least unused, feeling fingers on the keys only during Christmas and when my own children took piano lessons.
I know every inch of this piano. I spent years of my life in front of this piano. Awaiting my free will to ripen enough to release me from lessons. Awaiting my life to begin. Awaiting my mother to leave the room so I could secretly read my book while practicing scales.
It feels like I am giving away the family pet. So here I sit playing my last tune before the movers take the piano away and surprisingly there lies a growing desire for something else. It is time to clear the air to let in a different melody. Time to say,"Thank you for being part of my life," take a bow and leave the stage... with one final note rising up alongside the dust in a sunbeam.

At the foot of an Icelandic volcano, a newly-opened plant is taking CO2 from the air and turning it to rock. This technology is known as "direct air capture(捕捉)”or DAC.It's a bit like "mining"the sky for CO2-simple in principle, but very difficult to carry out.
To do this, you need the right geography conditions. That is why Climeworks, a Swiss company, built the Orca plant in Iceland. There, fans draw air into big black containers where the filter(过滤器)catches CO2. Once the filter is full, it is heated to around 100° to separate CO2with sufficient energy from volcanic activity. Next, the collected CO2 is combined with water and pumped deep underground into rock formations. Within a few years, the CO2 will turn into stone.
However, exciting and promising as this technology is, it won't save us from climate change on its own. While Orca, the largest plant of its kind in the world, can capture up to 4,000 tons of CO2 per year, the yearly global emissions (排放)are around 33.4 billion tons of CO2, so the plant can deal with 0.00001% of our yearly emissions. Besides, the process is expensive and requires large amounts of energy.
Daniel Egger, the chief commercial officer at Climeworks, said that while his company is at an “industrial level", it is not where it needs to be to make a difference in fighting climate change. But we have to learn to walk before we can run.
Carbon storage(碳储存)is just arising as a technology. It won't help us fix climate change yet,but it can be important down the line, if we have the right conditions for it.
8. What can we learn about DAC according to the text
A. It is the best way to fix climate change.
B. It is highly developed in removing CO2.
C. It can be applied anywhere in the world.
D. It requires enough heat and energy to operate.
9.Why are some data used in paragraph 3
A. To indicate the bright future of the technology.
B. To provide the research results for the readers.
C.To show the challenges DAC faces at present.
D.To call for mnore plants like Orca to be set up.
10.What is the author's attitude towards the technology
A.Unclear. B.Uninterested. C.Doubtful. D.Hopeful.
11.From which is the text probably taken
A.A science report. B.A social web page.
C.A company leaflet. D.A chemistry textbook.
D
You probably know the feeling of having a hearty meal at a restaurant, full and satisfied, but only take a look at the dessert menu and you decide the cheesecake looks just irresistible. Why do you somehow make an exception for a sweet treat, since you are too full to have another bite Thanks to a recent study, scientists now have a better understanding of the origins of this urge.
Working with mice, researchers tried to set up a situation similar to the human experience described above. They started by offering a standard diet to mice who hadn't eaten since the previous day. That "meal" period lasted for 90 minutes, and the mice ate until they couldn't eat any more. Then it was time for a 30-minute "dessert" period. In the first round of the experiment, researchers ofered mice extra regular food for dessert, and the mice ate just a little bit more. In the second round, during the "dessert" period, they offered a high-sugar feed to the mice for 30minutes. The mice really went for the sugary feed, consuming six times more calories than in the first round.
In the mice, researchers monitored the activity of neurons(神经元)that are associated with feelings of fullness. They found that when the mice were eating the high sugar diet, the neurons released a chemical which was related to pleasure sensors in their brain and caused a feeling of reward, making the mice keep eating. When the team blocked the release of the chemical, the mice stayed away from the sugar. The researchers found the same went for humans when scanning the brains of volunteers, who were fed sugar drinks. This led the scientists to conclude that the neuron action in the human brain drives the consumption of high-sugar foods.
Researchers say the follow-up studlies on this neural reward system could throw light on how sugar overconsumption may contribute to the development of obesity.
12.Why did the researchers carry out the study
A. To test new diets for mice. B. To improve dessert quality.
C. To explain the urge for sweets. D.To help people eat healthily.
13.What does paragraph 2 tell us about the research
A.The result. B.The process. C.The basis. D.The subject.
14.What may lead to humans' sugar overconsumption
A.The feeling of being full. B. The blocking of certain neurons.
C.The release of a chemical. D.The presence of pleasure sensors.
15.What is the best title for this passage
A.Whether Consuming Sugar Causes Obesity
B.How We Resist the Temptation of Sugar
C. What Makes Mice Prefer Eating Sugar
D,Why There's Always Room for Sugar

Bossy, dominant, controlling-have these labels ever come to mind when you think of others or yourself Or have others used these terms to describe you However, control isn't purely negative.16 Its role in our lives is far more complicated. Let's unpack it.
17 Air traffic controllers ensure planes' safe navigation. Teachers who manage classes effectively create a thriving environment. Self-control,too,is a cornerstone(基石)of personal growth, helping us pursue long term goals. These all show how control can be a force for order and progress.
But when control changes into a strong desire to be in charge all the time and make others do exactly what you want, many problems will start to appear. Some individuals use threats, or even force to impose(强制实行)their will. 18 If you recognize such behavior in others or experience it yourself, seeking support from trusted adults is crucial-they can help address the harm.
Psychologists link the desire for control to underlying anxiety. When we feel uncertain or that we don't know what to do in life, the need to manage every little thing becomes a way to deal with our feelings. And gradually, it becomes a negative cycle which gains strength. 19
Life's changes often spark control urges. Physical or emotional changes, family conflicts,or the loss of a loved one trigger(引发)feelings of powerlessness. Transitions like starting a new school or moving to a different city can also disrupt(扰乱)our sense of stability. 20 It's a natural response to life's unpredictability.
A.This can be a form of abuse.
B. It weakens our self-confidence.
C. Control has clear positive applications.
D. The sense of loss can also explain the reason.
E. In such moments, the need to regain control becomes intense.
F.Actually, control doesn't fit neatly into "good” or“bad”boxes.
G.If left unchecked, it can damage relationships and generate stress.

About a half-mile behind our Minnesota farm lay a pond. In summer,my elder brother Harry and I would run through a stand of oak trees to skip stones there. The pond wore a collar of black mud. It was not a place for swimming.
In late summer, the pond would be covered by a green and bubbly scum(起泡的浮渣).Sometimes a strong, unpleasant smell rose from it. We stayed away.
When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting pace. One day when ice covered it,Harry said to me,"Try walking across."
The ice looked solid. No water showed through it, but I hesitated. "Go ahead." Harry urged."Try it. You're lighter than I am. If the ice holds, we can run and slide carefully on it. It'lI be fun."I wanted to please Harry, and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice. I began to slide across the pond.
In the middle of the pond, the ice gave way with a sudden crack(裂缝)! I stretched out(伸展)my arms. The next thing I knew I was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the ice by arms outstretched on the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water. I thought of the bottom of the pond. I knew it would be black and awful down there, full of mud and maybe rotting creatures.
I tried to climb out of the hole, but when I got a knee on the ice, it broke like window glass.Again and again I tried to get out. Again and again the ice broke into pieces. The hole widened.I was wearing a coat of heavy material. As it became completely wet, it dragged me down. I was tired of the struggle and rested with my arms stretched out on the ice.
I looked at Harry on shore. He seemed rooted to the spot. "I can't get out!" I screamed when I caught some breath.
