As the saying goes, "Without music, life would be a mistake." Music is very important in our lives and here are four of the greatest musicians in history.
Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827)
Born in Bonn, Germany, Beethoven never held an official position in Vienna. He supported himself by giving concerts, teaching piano, and the sale of his compositions(作曲). The last 30 years of Beethoven's life were filled with a lot of hard times, the first of which was his deafness. Beethoven's music greatly influenced the next generation of musicians.
Johann Sebastian Bach(1685-1750)
Bach, "the father of modern music", was born in Eisenach, Germany. His parents died when he was nine years old, and in 1695 he went to live with his brother Johann Christoph, who was an organist(风琴手)in Ohrdruf. He stayed there until 1700. Seven years later, he moved back to Weimar, where he served as court(宫廷)organist for nine years. His music greatly influenced classical music.
Frederic Chopin(1810-1849)
Chopin was born in Zelazowa Wola, Poland. He showed a talent for the piano at a very young age. Chopin began composing when he was still a child, but some of his early works have been lost. He gave his first public concert in 1818.Chopin was considered as the leading musician of his time.
Franz Schubert(1797-1828)
Schubert was born and died in Vienna. Unlike most of his predecessors(前辈), Schubert was not a great performer. He never had much money but he was very productive. He wrote his first masterpiece when he was only sixteen. However, he died young, before his talents had even been known.

Working at a new school as a science teacher was exciting but tiring. By late May, I wanted to make the school year more enjoyable for everyone. I decided to follow the advice of a book named Never Work Harder Than Your Students. I let my students choose the topic of their final project, how they would present (描述) their knowledge, and how they would be graded (评分).
On the first day of work on the final project, each student picked a science topic on their own. Some kids chose to dig deeper into things we’d learned, and some explored new topics and studied other things. For example, one student built a model of DNA using a video game, while another connected her love of art with science.
Next, I worked with each student to create a grading plan for their project. Based on the type of project the student chose, I reviewed earlier grading plans about that type of project in the year. Then, I rewrote the grading plan based on the student’s new project and performance. For students who understood new ideas quickly and easily, I had different requirements.
Some students accepted my plans, while others suggested changes. “I really love doing art — can I have some more points if I put some drawings in my presentation ” one student asked. I almost always said yes. Kids were learning how to speak up for themselves in proper ways and what worked for them.
In the end, I was left with a collection of projects having wildly different styles and topics. I shared all the projects online so students could look at each other’s work. There was no boring repetition (重复) of the same presentation over and over, no stress of having to present their project to the whole class, but a whole lot more learning. Most importantly, it helped me connect better with my students, and they trusted me more.
24.What did the author ask students to do in late May
A.Read a famous book. B.Design their final project.
C.Suggest after-class activities. D.communicate with each other.
25.Why did the author rewrite the grading plans
A.To suit students’ learning ability. B.To grade students’ work fairly.
C.To encourage competition. D.To save more time.
26.What does the example in paragraph 4 show about the students
A.Taking a deep interest in art. B.Improving their projects actively.
C.Reporting their challenges in time. D.Focusing on developing social skills.
27.What can be inferred from the author’s teaching experience
A.Students need balanced development.
B.Scientific research matters to students.
C.Students’ control over learning drives progress.
D.New teachers bring more creativity to students.

In New York City public schools, many different languages are spoken among the more than l million students. For these children, English is not their first language. New York’s Department of Education makes learning better for these students by providing dual-language (双语的) programs. Students are taught in two languages, English and another one, like Russian or Chinese. Math, social culture, science and all other regular courses are taught in both languages. This is different from other students in New York.
Milady Baez is Deputy Chancellor of English Language Learners and Student Support. She says these dual-language programs will help children succeed in the future. “The jobs of the future require that our students know more than one language. They are going to be traveling abroad, and they are going to be communicating with people from all over the world. This will open doors for them.” Anastasia Hudikova came to the United States when she was 2-years old. She says the Russian-English program keeps her connected to her country and her parents. “They are really happy about the program. They are really happy that I can protect my culture and my language.”
Shuya Zhang teaches a dual-language class. She thinks the program helps children get ready to work with people in other countries. “Lots of factories have been built in China, and many companies move to China. They need people with both language skills. So when the kids grow up, they already have this skill. For Jiang keqing, she likes keeping up her first language, Mandarin. “It makes me feel that I am home because I can speak in Chinese, learn in Chinese, while learning in English. So it makes me feel better and makes me understand more about the tasks I am learning.”
The New York schools also offer dual-language programs in seven other languages: Arabic, French, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Korean, Polish and Spanish. There are plans to add even more languages in the future.

Scientists at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom have created “the world’s smallest violin”. The violin is so tiny that it can only be seen with a powerful microscope (显微镜). The project was planned to test the limits of how small a violin could actually be.
The tiny violin is made of platinum, a silver-grey precious material (材料) used in making expensive jewellery and in industry. It is just 35 microns long and 13 microns wide. A micron is one millionth of a meter. This means that the violin is even thinner than a human hair.
The team at Loughborough University is working to build very tiny things through “nanolithography”. If you’ve ever used a stencil, you may understand it more easily. For example, you cut a violin-shaped hole in a piece of paper. That’s a stencil. When you draw on the paper with a pencil, the only part that gets filled in is the violin-shaped hole.
Nanolithography is more complicated (复杂的), but it follows a similar rule. To make the tiny violin, the researchers first covered a small chip with a special gel (凝胶). That was like the paper. There were two steps in creating the hole. First, a special machine with a super-tiny needle was used. The scientists heated the needle and “drew” the violin on the chip. The heat burns the gel on the chip where the needle touches. Then the scientists washed the burned part away, leaving a tiny violin-shaped hole in the gel. Next, they covered the chip with platinum(白金). This filled the hole. Finally, they washed the chip again, this time clearing the rest of the gel, and leaving behind the tiny metal violin.
It took about three hours to create the violin, but the researchers spent several months developing the methods they used. Now the researchers plan to employ the technology to study more serious things. For example, they’re looking at new ways to store information and make computers work faster by heating.
32.What’s the scientists’ purpose in creating the tiny violin
A.To explore how small a violin can possibly be made.
B.To test a new invention that can see tiny objects.
C.To find out which material is best for making violins.
D.To show the university’s leading role in musical instrument making.
33.Why does the author mention stencil in paragraph 3
A.To give an example. B.To explain an idea.
C.To introduce a useful tool. D.To lead into a new topic.
34.What’s the main idea of paragraph 4
A.How the special gel is burned and washed away.
B.The steps and materials used to make the tiny violin.
C.Why platinum is chosen as the material for the tiny violin.
D.The different roles of the gel and paper in making the violin.
35.What does the underlined word “employ” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Challenge. B.Change. C.Examine. D.Use.
