A
drug
used
to
treat
severe
bleeding
could
save
thousands
of
lives
for
mothers
giving
birth.
A
global
trial
of
the
drug
found
it
reduced
the
risk
of
bleeding
deaths
during
child
birth
by
nearly
one-third.
The
study
involved
20,000
women
in
21
countries,
mainly
in
Africa
and
Asia.
The
trial
was
carried
out
by
London’s
School
of
Hygiene
and
Tropical
Medicine.
The
drug
is
called
tranexamic
acid
(氨甲环酸)
.It
is
low-cost
and
researchers
say
it
does
not
cause
serious
side
effects
for
mothers
or
babies.
The
drug
is
used
to
treat
mothers
for
severe
bleeding
during
childbirth,
also
known
as
postpartum
hemorrhage
(产后出血)
.It
is
the
leading
cause
of
mother’s
death
worldwide,
according
to
the
World
Health
Organization.
Haleema
Shakur
is
the
project
director
of
the
trial.
She
says
despite
medical
advances
in
many
countries,
severe
bleeding
after
child
birth
remains
a
big
problem
in
some
parts
of
the
world.
“It’s
one
of
the
biggest
killers
of
mothers.
In
Africa
and
Asia,
about
10
percent
of
women
will
end
up
with
severe
bleeding.”
The
drug
works
by
stopping
blood
clots(血凝块)
from
breaking
down
after
a
mother
gives
birth.
The
treatment
can
prevent
the
need
for
doctors
to
perform
surgery
to
find
the
source
of
bleeding.
Shakur
said
the
best
results
were
reported
when
the
drug
was
given
to
women
as
soon
as
possible
after
childbirth,
“The
earlier
you
give
it—so
within
the
first
three
hours
of
giving
birth—the
better
the
effect
is.”
The
next
step
will
be
to
get
the
drug
where
it
is
needed
and
provide
training
for
doctors
and
nurses
on
how
to
use
it.
During
the
trial,
women
were
given
the
drug
in
a
hospital.
But
researchers
are
looking
for
easier
ways
to
administer
the
drug
so
it
can
be
more
widely
used
in
small
clinics
and
rural
areas.

Black
Friday
is
the
Friday
following
Thanksgiving
Day
in
the
United
States.
It
has
been
regarded
as
the
beginning
of
the
holiday
shopping
season.
Although
it’s
not
an
official
holiday,
millions
of
employers
give
their
employees
the
day
off,
and
many
people
use
that
day
to
get
a
jump-start
on
their
holiday
shopping.
A
similar
day
in
Canada
and
Great
Britain
is
called
“Boxing
Day”
.
Black
Friday
has
become
somewhat
of
a
marketing
sensation
in
recent
years.
Since
2005,
it
has
been
the
busiest
shopping
day
of
the
year.
To
lure
shoppers,
retailers
(零售商)
routinely
open
their
doors
as
early
as
4a.m.
and
offer
special
sales
and
promotions
to
the
shoppers
that
arrive
early.
Some
of
the
special
deals
offered
by
stores
are
only
available
in
limited
quantities.
That
is
why
some
shoppers
intent
on
getting
the
best
deals
often
camp
out
in
front
of
stores
overnight
so
that
they’ll
be
the
first
in
line
when
the
doors
open.
But
why
Black
Friday?
Historians
believe
the
name
started
in
Philadelphia
in
the
mid-1960s.
Bus
drivers
and
police
used
“Black
Friday”to
describe
the
heavy
traffic
that
would
block
city
streets
the
day
after
Thanksgiving
as
shoppers
headed
to
the
stores.
Businesses,
however,
didn’t
like
the
negative
tone
associated
with
the
“Black
Friday”
name.
In
the
early
1980s,
a
more
positive
explanation
of
the
name
began
to
circulate.
According
to
this
alternative
explanation,
Black
Friday
is
the
day
when
retailers
finally
begin
to
turn
a
profit
for
the
year.
In
accounting
terms(会计行业),
operating
at
a
loss
is
called
being
“in
the
red”because
accountants
traditionally
used
red
ink
to
show
negative
amounts.
Positive
amounts
were
usually
shown
in
black
ink.
Thus,
being
“in
the
black”
is
a
good
thing
because
it
means
stores
are
operating
at
a
profit.
Recently,
for
those
who
are
too
busy
to
shop
on
Black
Friday
or
who
just
don’t
want
to
fight
the
crowds,the

become
known
as
Cyber

deals.

FLORENCE,
Italy—Svetlana
Cojochru
feels
hurt.
The
Moldovan
has
lived
here
seven
years
as
a
caregiver
to
Italian
kids
and
the
elderly,
but
in
order
to
stay
she’s
had
to
prove
her
language
skills
by
taking
a
test
which
requires
her
to
write
a
postcard
to
an
imaginary
friend
and
answer
a
fictional
job
ad.
  Italy
is
the
latest
Western
European
country
trying
to
control
a
growing
immigrant(移民)
population
by
demanding
language
skills
in
exchange
for
work
permits,
or
in
some
cases,
citizenship.
  Some
immigrant
advocates
worry
that
as
hard
financial
times
make
it
more
difficult
for
natives
to
keep
jobs,
such
measures
will
become
more
a
vehicle
for
intolerance
than
integration(融合).
Others
say
it’s
only
natural
that
newcomers
learn
the
language
of
their
host
nation,
seeing
it
as
a
condition
to
ensure
they
can
contribute
to
society.
  Other
European
countries
laid
down
a
similar
requirement
for
immigrants,
and
some
terms
are
even
tougher.
The
governments
argue
that
this
will
help
foreigners
better
join
the
society
and
promote
understanding
across
cultures.
  Italy,
which
has
a
much
weaker
tradition
of
immigration,
has
witnessed
a
sharp
increase
in
immigration
in
recent
years.
In
1990,
immigrants
numbered
some
1.14
million
out
of
Italy’s
then
56.7
million
people,
or
about
2
percent.
At
the
start
of
this
year,
foreigners
living
in
Italy
amounted
to
4.56
million
of
a
total
population
of
60.6
million,
or
7.5
percent,
with
immigrants’
children
accounting
for
an
even
larger
percentage
of
births
in
Italy.
  Cojochru,
the
Moldovan
caregiver,
hoped
obtaining
permanent
residence(居住权)
would
help
her
bring
her
two
children
to
Italy;
they
live
with
her
sister
in
Moldova,
where
salaries
are
among
the
lowest
in
Europe.
She
was
skeptical
that
the
language
requirement
would
encourage
integration.
  Italians
always
“see
me
as
a
foreigner,”
an
outsider,
even
though
she’s
stayed
in
the
country
for
years
and
can
speak
the
local
language
fluently,
she
said.
  9.
Why
does
Cojochru
have
to
take
a
language
test?
  A.
To
continue
to
stay
in
Italy.
B.
To
teach
her
children
Italian.
  C.
To
find
a
better
job
in
Italy.
D.
To
better
mix
with
the
Italians.
  10.
Some
people
worry
that
the
new
language
requirement
may
________.
  A.
reduce
Italy’s
population
quickly
B.
cause
conflicts
among
people
  C.
lead
to
financial
difficulties
D.
put
pressure
on
schools
  11.
What
do
we
know
about
Cojochru?
  A.
She
lives
with
her
sister
now
in
Italy.
  B.
She
enjoys
learning
the
Italian
language.
  C.
She
speaks
Italian
well
enough
for
her
job.
  D.
She
wishes
to
go
back
to
her

Getting
less
sleep
has
become
a
bad
habit
for
most
American
kids.
According
to
a
new
survey(调查)
by
the
National
Sleep
Foundation,
51%
of
kids
aged
10
to
18
go
to
bed
at
10
pm
or
later
on
school
nights,
even
though
they
have
to
get
up
early.
Last
year
the
Foundation
reported
that
nearly
60%
of
7-
to
12-year-olds
said
they
felt
tired
during
the
day,
and
15%
said
they
had
fallen
asleep
at
school.
  How
much
sleep
you
need
depends
a
lot
on
your
age.
Babies
need
a
lot
of
rest:
most
of
them
sleep
about
18
hours
a
day!
Adults
need
about
eight
hours.
For
most
school-age
children,
ten
hours
is
ideal(理想的).
But
the
new
National
Sleep
Foundation
survey
found
that
35%
of
10-
to
12-year-olds
get
only
seven
or
eight
hours.
And
guess
what
almost
half
of
the
surveyed
kids
said
they
do
before
bedtime?
Watch
TV.
  “More
children
are
going
to
bed
with
TVs
on,
and
there
are
more
opportunities(机会)
to
stay
awake,
with
more
homework,
the
Internet
and
the
phone,”
says
Dr.
Mary
Carskadon,
a
sleep
researcher
at
Brown
University
Medical
School.
She
says
these
activities
at
bedtime
can
zxxk
get
kids
all
excited
and
make
it
hard
for
them
to
calm
down
and
sleep.
Other
experts
say
part
of
the
problem
is
chemical.
Changing
levels
of
body
chemicals
called
hormones
not
only
make
teenagers’
bodies
develop
adult
characteristics,
but
also
make
it
hard
for
teenagers
to
fall
asleep
before
11
pm.
  Because
sleepiness
is
such
a
problem
for
teenagers,
some
school
districts
have
decided
to
start
high
school
classes
later
than
they
used
to.
Three
years
ago,
schools
in
Edina,
Minnesota,
changed
the
start
time
from
7:25
am
to
8:30
am.
Students,
parents
and
teachers
are
pleased
with
the
results.
  12.
What
is
the
new
National
Sleep
Foundation
survey
on?
  A.
American
kids’
sleeping
habits.
B.
Teenagers’
sleep-related
diseases.
  C.
Activities
to
prevent
sleeplessness.
D.
Learning
problems
and
lack
of
sleep.
  13.
How
many
hours
of
sleep
do
11-year-olds
need
every
day?
  A.
7
hours.
B.
8
hours.
C.
10
hours.
D.
18
hours.
  14.
Why
do
teenagers
go
to
sleep
late
according
to
Carskadon?
  A.
They
are
affected
by
certain
body
chemicals.
  B.
They
tend
to
do
things
that
excite
them.
  C.
They

?Both
men
and
women
are
living
longer
these
days
in
industrialized
countries.?___16_____
In
general,
they
can
expect
to
live
six
or
seven
years
more
than
men.
One
reason
for
this
is
biological.
One
important
biological
factor
that
helps
women
live
longer
is
the
difference
in
hormones
between
men
and
women.?__17____
Between
the
ages
of
about
12
and
50,
women
produce
hormones
that
are
involved
in
fertility(生育能力).
These
hormones
also
have
a
positive
effect
on
the
heart
and
blood
flow.
In
fact,
women
are
less
likely
to
have
high
blood
pressure
or
to
die
from
heart
attacks.
____18____?They
help
the
body
defend
itself
against
some
kinds
of
infections.
This
means
that
women
generally
get
sick
less
often
and
less
seriously
than
men.
The
common
cold
is
a
good
example:
women,
on
average,
get
fewer
colds
than
men.
____19____?Scientists
are
still
not
exactly
sure
how
genes
influence
aging,
but
they
believe
that
they
do.
Some
think
that
a
woman’s
body
cells
have
a
tendency(向)
to
age
more
slowly
than
a
man’s.
Others
think
that
a
man’s
body
cells
have
a
tendency
to
age
more
quickly.___20___
A.However,
women,
on
average,
live
longer.
B
.The
biological
factor
plays
an
important
part.
C.
Women
are
also
helped
by
their
female
genes.
D.
The
female
hormones
also
protect
the
body
in
another
way.
E.
Recent
research
seems
to
support
both
of
these
possibilities.
F.
Therefore,
women
are
more
healthy
than
men
and
can
live
a
better
life.
G.
Hormones
are
chemicals
which
are
produced
by
the
body
to
control
various
body
functions.
