I know I’ve made a mistake, but you did not tell us that you are a lover of the animals and devoted to animal protection. It is not totally my fault, right
Maybe we just need more communication. I think that you won’t be too angry at that for a long time because after all we are friends.

I am writing to apologize for our rude behavior several days ago. We shouldn’t talk about such a thing and make you embarrassed.
I felt rather strange when you refused to take the dog’s meat several days ago. Unfortunately, I did not realize that you’re a member of animal protection. I didn’t mean to serve you with that dish. People here also love animals, but in some places, eating dog’s meat is considered as a tradition.
Again, I am so sorry for what we’ve said and done earlier. I sincerely hope that you can forgive us. I hope that our next meeting will be happier.

Step 1 lead-in
T: It’s so nice to be here and it’s really an honor for me to spend the next 45 minutes with you. I really hope that we can have a good time together and you can learn something useful in this period.
As language learners, we have been dreaming of more chances to communicate with foreigners. I even used to dream of having a foreign girl as my girlfriend or marrying a foreign lady. But after I was asked to receive some of the foreign guests, I’ve changed my mind. Because after that experience, I found communicating with them occasionally or having an online chat with those guys are totally different from receiving them. You have to stay with them for a long time, acting as their guide and responsible for their travel and daily life. It can be so difficult and complex, and sometimes many problems arise during such process.
Can you imagine the difficulties I’ve had when receiving those foreigners If so, can you share some difficulties you think of with us Or in other words, can you think of some difficulties when receiving the foreigners Try to be specific as you can, in other words, don’t give too general answers.
Step 2
T: Of course, we need to show hospitality when receiving friends, but it seems that problems can’t be avoided. We need to take action to apologize for our rudeness or ignorance. Nowadays we have many ways to make apologies. We can send a text message or an e-mail to the foreign. However in my opinion, when you find it is difficult to say sorry in front of the others, we can choose a more traditional way to apologize. We can write letters.
So, this is the ultimate aim of this aim. We need to learn to write a letter to apologize to the others. Writing a letter is not the same as the compositions we’ve finished in tests. When writing a letter, we need to pay attention to, first of all, the format. Then comes the content of the letter. We’ve already learnt how to write a letter in junior years. Here I will provide you with the elements contained in a letter, and you are required to tell me what they are.
Now you can tell me the mistakes existing in the letter on your students’ sheet. Yes, the format is not English, but it is Chinese. I think you can do that in an e-mail, but in a formal letter, never do that again.
Step 3
T: Now it is time for us to discuss the content of the letter we are going to finish. This unit mainly deals with the cultural differences. The write we are going to finish certainly has something to do with it. We are going to do a listening practice. In the recording, you are going to hear a dialogue between two students. They are talking about their own experiences of receiving foreigners. Of course, they’ve met some problem. After listening, we are required to fill in the blanks on P 46. We need some preparations before listening. And on P46, the textbook has already given us some guidelines. All we have to do is to follow the guidelines and carry them out.
The three guidelines are done at the same time. So you have to remember, while reading the text in your mind, you also need to do some guess work.
Step 4
T: Apparently, Mr. Singh, Mr. Takashi and Mr. Hudson have something they are unhappy with. And we need to seek the answers to the questions. It is easy for us to understand why Mr. Singh refused to take a beef steak, for cattle are worshipped as god in India. We can never violate the gods, not along eating them. Luckily we have a passage to solve our puzzles. The title is quite interesting, for it is similar to William Shakespeare’s famous quote, “to be or not to be, that is a question”. First we should figure out the meaning of the new word---“taboo”. Just as we’ve mentioned, eating beef steaks is a taboo for the Indians. So the meaning is quite clear and hot. It means something that is forbidden in one culture. Taboo is also a daily word which is really common. For example, I can make up this sentence, that is, “Talking about my height and weight is really a taboo for me.”
Here I want you to go through the text quickly and fill in the blanks. The sentences are provided on the screen.
If we don’t any paper materials to refer to, we can answer others about our puzzles. When asking questions, we need to use the question words. I think this is definitely a piece of cake for all the students here. So maybe after class, you can practice with your partners.
Step 5
T: Now we have the content of our letters. And we know we are going to write letter to apologize to Mr. Singh, Mr. Takashi or Mr. Hudson. But we haven’t learnt why Mt. Hudson felt unhappy, so we will only write to Mr. Singh and Mr. Takashi. We’ve discussed the format of the letter at the beginning of the lesson. For us, I think the content is more important.
