be used for“被用来做……”，介词for表示目的和用途，后面接名词或动名词形式。例如：
Knives are used for cutting things. 刀子是用来切东西的。
拓展迁移
(1) be used for doing可以转换成 be used to do 的形式。注意used to do 是“过去常常”。例如：
Knives are used to cut things. 刀子是用来切东西的。
He used to walk to school, but now he goes to school by bus. 他以前步行去上学，但是现在坐公交车上学。
(2)含有be used的常用短语：
be used as“被用作……”，介词as（“作为”）后面一般接名词，强调使用的工具及手段。例如：
English is used as a second language in this country. 这个国家把英语作为第二语言。
be used by“被……使用”，介词by后面接动作的执行者。例如：
English is used by many people in the world. 世界上许多人使用英语。
