Jack Brown, an office worker, lives in Washington. He inherited (继承) a million dollars when he was 23, but he wasn’t happy at all. “北斗”星 亮晶晶
今年6月我国成功发射了第四颗“北斗”导航卫星。过后不久，美国《太空新闻》杂志就撰文称，“北斗”系统堪与美国的GP S（G l o b a lPositioning System全球定位系统）媲美，是对美国科技和军事优势的重大挑战。
让美国人忧心忡忡的“北斗”系统是我国完全自主建立的卫星导航系统。按照“先区域、后全球”的两阶段发展方针，“北斗”系统将于明年形成覆盖我国及周边地区的能力。2020年之前，我国还将发射30多颗卫星，最终组成完整的北斗卫星导航系统，并为全球提供商业导航、定位和通信服务。
目前，“北斗”系统已被联合国确认为全球卫星导航系统的“核心供应商”之一，它与美国的GPS系统、欧盟的伽利略系统和俄罗斯的格洛纳斯系统并称世界四大卫星导航系统。
拥有自己的卫星导航系统，是许多国家梦寐以求的目标。法国前总统希拉克曾感慨，欧盟如果没有自己的卫星定位系统，欧洲将不可避免地成为美国的附庸。现在世界上绝大多数的军民定位导航应用使用的都是美国的GPS系统，就连我国的民用导航和定位市场，GPS也达到了95％的占有率。一旦美国关闭GPS，后果不堪设想。2003年，我国中远公司的一条远洋货轮，刚通过马六甲海峡驶入印度洋，就被美国军舰拦阻，要求停船检查。我国货轮没买美军的账，继续航行。可没过多久，船长发现这条船的GPS导航定位仪失效了。后来才知道，是美国海军对中国货轮的GPS进行了定点屏蔽。因此，建设“北斗”系统对维护我国国家安全和经济发展具有不可估量的作用。
1983年，我国开始卫星导航系统的研究，1994年正式定名为“北斗”卫星导航定位系统。2000年10月31日，我国发射了第一颗“北斗”卫星，同年12月21日第二颗“北斗”升空，2003年5月25日，第三颗“北斗”卫星进入太空。目前“北斗一号”已有四颗卫星在太空遨游。
我国的“北斗”系统起步虽比技术最成熟的美国GPS晚了20年，但在技术上并没有落后多少，相反还有着自己的特点。
第一个特点是既能知道“我在哪里”，也能知道“你在哪里”。以在大洋中遇险的船舶为例，只要船舶发出定位信号，不但船舶自己知道身处何方（我在哪里），地面控制中心也能同时锁定船舶位置（你在哪里）实施救援。而美国目前的GPS系统只提供用户自身请求的“我在哪里”服务，“你在哪里”没有开通。
第二个特点是快速定位。这是目前上世界上最先进的技术。从用户发出定位要求到收到结果，“北斗”系统只需1秒钟。而在这1秒钟内，整个系统要完成发送申请信号、上传卫星、经地面控制中心计算出位置，再从卫星将定位信息返送用户等一整套流程。而美国的GPS定位需要几秒至几十秒不等。另外“北斗”系统的民用定位精度为1.2米，而GPS为10米。第三个特点是短信功能。“北斗”系统用户与用户、用户与地面控制中心之间能实现最多120个汉字的双向短信通信功能。目前美国的GPS系统还无法提供这种通信服务，GPS用户只能单向接收卫星提供的导航和定位信号。
目前我国“北斗”系统的主要用户是军队，另外还有一些国家机关和大型企业。
2008年，在抗击5·12汶川地震时，“北斗”系统发挥了重要作用。当时震中映秀镇的通信系统瘫痪，是空降部队拿着
“北斗”系统手持机迅速将汶川的灾情传递了出来。
