Niesha could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up. on yourself.” Mr. Roberts had hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage ” Niesha had nodded, grateful for the chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next class. She had kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha ”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class ” Momma asked. She set the timer and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first- not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

One day in 2001, when I was eight years old, my family and I were coming back from a baseball game, which was our usual weekend adventure. But unlike other weekends, a surprise was waiting for us. It was freezing cold when night fell. Concerned about the wild goose's safety, we begged dad to protect the little guy. Dad took the tiny little thing to the back porch (门廊) to keep warm and protect him from wild animals. The small wild goose seemed in a panic, unaware of what could happen. The next morning, we try to drive the wild goose over to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, and they wouldn't come close to take him. We kept this up for six days, but no luck. By then, the young wild goose had clearly decided we were his new family. My sister Anna called the little guy Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping noise, nonstop. Every time we called his name, he would respond. We also decided that Peeper was a boy, I don’t know why; it just felt right.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months until almost a year passed. Peeper liked to sleep on our back porch each night, and every day my dad would clean up all the goose droppings (鸟兽的粪便) carefully. Dad would throw Peeper up into the air so he could fly a circle around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.

“Time for ghost stories!” Brad announced as soon as I'd closed the tent. He told a story about vampires （吸血鬼）, but it only made us fall over laughing. When it was Wade's turn, he told a story of three guys who were camping in a tent. He described our situation exactly-except for Andy. When he was describing a terrifying creature, somewhere outside, a branch snapped （发出咔嚓声）。The hairs on my arms shot straight up. “These guys were crawling into their sleeping bags, right ” Wade continued. “When out of the darkness rang this terrible cry.” And out of the woods behind us there was a cry! High-pitched, frightening, and strange. The hairs on my head shot straight up!
“What was that ” Bred asked as the cry came again. We all looked at each other in horror, speechless. Wade suggested someone should go out to check, but no one dared. “What if it's something trapped or hurt ” Andy said anxiously. We focused our flashlights on Andy, whom we'd forgotten, sitting in the corner with his arms around his bear. Andy would adopt every lost or hurt animal in the world if Mom would let him.

Prather admitted having taken the wallet and told Gilleece he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so be took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks(码头) into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich. Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prathen told the teen to meet him at the docks. There, they got to talking, and Prather told him that he wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece, a father of two, looked up and down Prather—his small figure, his red cheeks—and saw him for what he was; more of a kid than a criminal.
But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be facing crime charges. “He would be going to prison,” Gilleece thought to himself. “I had to help him somehow.”

And there's no rescue center nearby. Chase and Abigail were swimming at the back of the anchored boat while Steven was on deck (甲板) fishing.
It was a perfect outing- it was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the deep blue sky, the light green river water and the mild late May sunshine mixed to create a magic scene. Everything was sound until a strong current emerged and loosened Abigail's grasp and she let go of the boat. Instantly realizing his sister would be swept away, Chase let go of the boat as well to try and reach her. At the same time, Chase screamed at his father desperately.
Without thinking twice, Steven jumped into the water and swam towards the two kids with all his efforts. But after realizing he couldn't keep up with both kids, he was faced with a heartbroken decision. He told them he loved them very much because he wasn't sure what's going to happen. Steven tried his best to stick with both of his children. He wore himself out. But his little daughter was washed away from him. Directing Chase to swim to shore for help Steven stayed behind, keeping as close as he could to Abigail as the life-vest that was keeping her above the waves floated further and further from his reach.
It was a tough go for the 7-year-old, but rather than attempting to swim all out, Chase wisely paced himself. Stopping to float or dog paddle when he was tired, he'd rest and then set off again. The current was going the opposite way of going to the boat and the shore, so it was very hard to swim that way for Chase.

Peter, an officer, walked out of his company to get brunch and buy groceries as he always did. He was a young man, dressed in a loose, white T-shirt and basketball shorts. He was wandering about the streets, easing his way through the crowd, listening to his favorite songs through his earphones.
Upon his usual route to his favorite restaurant, his joyful pace came to a stop when he felt a faint smell of smoke carried by the warm wind. He took out his earphones and looked around to see if anyone else was alarmed by the stench (恶臭). The crowd began to slow down as more people stopped at this smell. Fire trucks raced by with their alarms and Peter, along with the people around him, started to become worried. Then he saw thick, black smoke starting to cloud the blue skies. In curiosity, Peter headed in the direction of the smoke to find its source.
His heart was racing as the awful smell of the smoke strengthened. When the clouds of smoke were finally directly above him, Peter saw a huge building in flames, starting to fall down to ashes. When he finally emerged in the front, the big red flames were licking (舔) the sides of the walls and columns of fire shot through the roof.
When he finally was able to shake himself out of a state of shock, he saw a sign that said “Moving Company”. He remembered that morning his brother, Ryann told him and their mother their company was scheduled to deliver a shipment that day. And Ryann was in the building!
“I cannot leave Ryann alone in the building,” thought Peter.

The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Shy, she customarily lowered her head and averted her gaze, numb there for seconds. Shortly afterwards, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, summoned up her courage, “Dear fellow students, ...” Niesha cast a glance at Mr. Roberts standing in the corner smiling at her. A self-reassuring smile spread across Niesha’s face. She knew for sure that she had found her courage, in the mill and in the adversity.
2．Everyone was very, very sad. We looked for him for days, calling his name, but he didn't come back. We hoped he found a flock and went off on his natural way. Again, days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, then years. I missed my little buddy, and I would call for him every time I saw a flock of Canadian geese fly by in V-formation. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a fond memory for my family.
At first, I assumed it was just another wild goose. After two weeks, it became clear to me that this wasn't a random wild goose. He did all of the same things Peeper used to, like trying to come in through the front door. In addition to mimicking Peeper's old ways, this wild goose also responded to the name Peeper. Much to my amazement, my old best friend had returned, 20 years later.
3．“I’m going to see.” Andy ran out of the tent and disappeared in the darkness. Although filled with fear, I ran after him without hesitation. He was my little brother after all. Andy was headed into the woods, his flashlight beam wobbling along the trail. Finally I saw him, a few yards ahead, with his flashlight aimed at the upper branches of a large tree. I raised my own light to shine on the same spot. A pair of shining eyes seemed to float in the darkness. My heart pounded harder.
Andy said it was a baby monkey caught between branches, and it was crying for its mama. I knew he was right. I had to admit that Andy was impressive. We helped the little monkey out carefully. Having ensured that the little monkey was in good condition, we let it go. When we walked down back, I could see the guys gathered before the tent. “Are you all right ” They asked. “We’re fine.” I answered with a broad smile, knowing that the guys’ opinion of Andy would change, too.
4．Gilleece hired two divers to search the waters where Prather had thrown the wallet. A police was waiting for them there. A crowd had together to watch the two divers search in the strong current. More than an hour passed with no sign of the ring. Gilleece grew worried, especially when the police begin questioning Prather, trying to get him to admit keeping the ring.
Then suddenly a diver came out of the water. In his hand was the wallet, and inside was the ring. Cheers broke out in the crowd. When Gilleece called the wallet’s owner, the woman burst into tears. She was more than delighted and promptly dropped the charge against the Prather for stealing the ring. But it wasn't over for Gilleece. He’d been troubled about Prather sleeping in the cold woods. Gilleece knew his home was big enough to give Prather a place to live in for a while. He told the teen he could stay with his family until the boy got on his feet again.
5．An hour later, Chase swam to the shore, anyhow. Exhausted and tired, he managed to find a man who was willing to help him. The man took him to the nearest rescue center where Chase told the story clearly. The rescue workers took action and headed for the location without hesitation. At the same time, Chase was taken well care of, left in the rescue center.
Luckily, Steven and Abigail were found and rescued. Steven could hardly believe that they were still alive. When he saw them coming from afar, he was excited to burst into tears. Steven and Abigail were also taken to the center , where they hugged each other, crying. Steven said “I am grateful to the men and proud of my son .Young as Chase is ,he is a brave man.”This frightening experience left a deep impression on them, which made them realize that they shoud cherish the moment which they spent.
6．“I cannot leave Ryann alone in the building,” thought Peter. He was so worried about his brother that he wanted to rush into the building. However, when Peter came close to the building, a fireman who was putting out the fire stopped him and said to Peter, “What are you doing, sir It’s too dangerous. Please stay away from the building.” Pete answered anxiously, “My brother is in the building and I have to go there to rescue him from the burning building.” Meanwhile, he still wanted to dash into the building. The fireman held Peter’s arm strongly in case he went there. Peter was crying loudly so that many people were staring at him when he heard someone was calling his name.
It was his brother who was calling his name! His brother was behind him in the crowd. He couldn’t believe his eyes and he said to the fireman,”Look, may brother is still alive. He isn’t in the building.” At the same time, he struggled to free himself from the fireman and ran quickly to his brother. “Are you hurt ” he asked his brother very excitedly and looked at the whole body of his brother. “No, I’m fine. We ran out of the building as soon as it started burning. Everyone is all right.” his brother replied.
