My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a
year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that
wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later,
when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The
set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for
the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have
gotten to bed.
Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some
reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial(商业广告), a loud noise would sound for
a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to
change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this method would not work, and I
had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm
muscles shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for
the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working
altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep
expecting more trouble.
24. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set
A. He got an older model than he had expected.
B. He could have bought it at a lower price.
C.He couldn’t return it when it was broken.
3
D. He failed to find any movie shows on it.
25.Which of the following can best replace the phrase “signed off” in paragraph 1
A.changed to commercials. B. provided fewer channels.
C. ended all their programs. D. showed all-night movies.
26. How did the author finally get this TV set working again
A. By shaking and hitting it. B. By having it repaired.
C. By switching channels. D. By turning it on and off.
27. How does the author sound when telling the story
A. Humorous. B. Nervous. C. Careful. D. Curious.

With schools close in the UK during the COVID-19 outbreak, most children must now be
homeschooled. Parents have found themselves not only having to balance work and having the
children at home but also having to try and teach them. How can you keep your children focused
while learning
Nicola Anderson--Head of Customer Support at the UK’s leading online tutoring service
My Tutor, provides new, up-to-date tips to hearten parents at this difficult time and advises how
they can structure their children’s days.
One is to keep to a regular timetable so it still feels like your child is taking part in the
school day. Ms Anderson said, “Children of all ages do well on routine and boundaries; schools
provide this in abundance and it will make most children feel secure and happy if they can follow
a similar timetable for their homeschooling.”
Another tip is to create an environment which is favorable to learning. She said, “The
environment should be free from distractions(分心) and ideally near to an open window, to
provide them with appropriate levels of fresh air and natural light. Some children find it
comfortable and helpful to have quiet, instrumental music playing in the background to help
them to focus, but this isn’t for everyone.”
Using technology to help with your child’s learning is also advised. Many schools are
offering online classes and resources to help and companies are reducing or even not charging
their fees during this time.
It is also important to keep physical exercise as a part of your routine. Joe Wicks, otherwise
known as The Body Coach, has been keeping kids healthy with daily 10 minute workouts for
children on his Youtube channel. Ms Anderson said, “It can be anything from running around the
garden, walking the dog, a game of football or dancing around your living room!“
28.Who is the text intended for
A.Parents. B.Teachers. C.Coaches. D.Students.
29.What may Nicola Anderson agree
A.To allow children to adjust schedule freely. B.To offer children peaceful study environment.
C.To recommend high-tech to online schools. D.To combine routine with kids’mental health.
30.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Home schooling. B.Tutoring service. C.Difficulty time. D.A regular timetable.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.How to study attentively at home. B.How to obtain online learning resources.
4
C. How to improve homeschooling efficiency. D.How to design a proper schedule.
D
China’s hot word, tuhao, may be in Oxford English Dictionary.
In Chinese, tu means rude and hao means rich. In recent years, people use this term to
describe those who spend money in an unreasonable way. The word became more popular with
Apple’s gold-colored iPhone, which is loved by China’s rich people. The color became known as
“tuhao golden”. The word is now often used to refer to people who have money but lack taste.
There are two other Chinese hot words: dama and No Zuo No Die, which may also be taken
in the dictionary. Dama, meaning middle-aged women, was first used in the Western media by the
Wall Street Journal. Thousands of Chinese women were buying a large amount of gold when the
gold price had gone down. Another phrase No Zuo No Die, meaning if you don’t do stupid things,
they won’t come back to bite you, is also very popular. Other words, such as Maotai, Chinglish
and dim sum have also been included in the dictionary.
BBC World News recently made a special program called “Tuhao, let’s be friends!” “The
frequent use of Chinglish by foreign media suggests that foreign people are looking more to the
lifestyle and popular culture of China,” says Zhang Yiwu, professor of Beijing University.
What does this trend suggest about the Chinese language’s influence
Xing Hongbing, a professor from Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) said
“These show that Chinglish is now being accepted by the rest of the world and they play important
roles in daily life of Chinese. Behind these Chinglish words and phrases are the Chinese culture.
They are reflections of the changes and trends in the Chinese society and they help people from
other countries to understand what’s happening in China.”
32. Which of the following words is NOT a hot Chinglish word
A.Karaoke. B. Dama. C. Tuhao. D. Dim sum.
33. The word “dama” becomes so popular because ________.
A. they are wealthy middle-aged women
B. they made the gold price up
C. they bought gold crazily when the price was down
D. they worked on the Wall Street
34. According to the passage, Xing Hongbing agreed that ________.
A.Chinglish plays important roles in daily life of Chinese
B. Foreigners want to know more about the culture of China from Chinglish
C. Chinglish hot words tell some funny things about China
D. Chinglish hot words are so vivid that people like using them a lot
35. What’s the purpose of writing this article
A. To learn something about Oxford English Dictionary.
B. To describe the use of Chinglish hot words and their influence.
C. To explain the meanings of some Chinese hot words.
D. To show the different opinions about Chinglish hot words.

Three in five people in the UK hold a library card. For some, libraries are a shelter
from the stresses of day-to-day life. 36 If you're considering joining your local library,
now is the time to do so. And if you need any more encouragement, here are several
reasons why you should.
Most libraries in the UK allow members of the general public to come and go as they
like. 37 You can also take out a library card and borrow books for free, although you
will inevitably(不可避免地) face a fine for late returns.
38 Imagine just how many books you have at your finger tips with a library card.
There are lots of modern ones,as well as original ones, and you can continue to expand
your learning and vocabulary all the time. It's a priceless experience, especially for kids
and also a great way to level the educational playing field.
Libraries develop with times. They have changed greatly since decades ago. 39 Some
libraries have apps so you can see when your books are due back and even reserve books in
some cases. There are also libraries which let you access(接触) books in digital formats
on your mobile device—pretty cool.
Libraries are one of very few spaces left in towns and cities where members of the
public can come together and actually be and feel like a community. They have notice
boards to offer services like exercise classes or learning centers. 40
A. Libraries help people learn.
B. Libraries help educate the kids.
C. They create a great sense of community.
D. You can go in, settle down and read a book without being charged a penny.
E. Most libraries now have computers and allow people to borrow CDs and DVDs.
F. Libraries help us save money as we're borrowing books rather than buying them.
G. For others, particularly the homeless and people in poverty, libraries are a lifeline to the
world.
