The bell for lunch rang at Glendale Primary School. However, instead of heading to the canteen like all the other children did, Jonah, a new student at the school, went to the library. Other than the noise of the air-conditioner, the library was quiet and there was barely a soul in sight. Far in a corner, he spotted Mrs Lim, the librarian, who was too busy shelving some books to pay any attention to him. The library was near to the canteen. Jonah could hear children laughing and chatting. He wished he was outside playing with some friends but he did not let this bother him.
Suddenly, Jonah heard a sound in the corner. He looked around and saw a pair of eyes looking at him from behind, the bookshelves. Jonah turned back, eyes as wide as saucers (茶碟). “Oh dear!” he whispered. He peeked (窥视) over his shoulder again and saw a smaller boy walking towards him.
The boy pulled out the chair next to Jonah and sat down. “I’m Henry. Why are you reading here when you could be playing with your friends instead ” asked he. “Uh...” Jonah looked around the library, avoiding Henry’s gaze (注视). He did not want Henry to know the real reason why he was in the library. What would Henry think of him if he knew Jonah did not have any friends It would make Jonah feel more uncomfortable.
As Jonah turned the page, he realized Henry was still sitting there, watching him steadily.
“I know how you feel. Just say hello to someone today,” Henry encouraged Jonah. “I promise they’ll respond. Once you’ve made the first move, it just gets easier.”
Jonah appreciated the advice and thanked him before making his way out of the library. In the hallway outside the library, a boy from Jonah’s class was crouched on the floor, picking up pens and pencils that had dropped out of his pencil case. Jonah remembered what Henry had advised him to do.
“Hello, I’m Jonah. Let me help you,” he offered.
The boy looked up at him. “Thank you! My name is Ruben.”
Victory at last, Jonah thought, feeling proud of himself.

These days, it’s not unusual to see middle-aged men collecting Star Wars action figures, office workers wearing Hello Kitty accessories, or celebrities like David Beckham playing with Lego bricks. It’s becoming more and more common to see adult taking an interest in toys, comic books and the activities that are traditionally associated with children. This phenomenon has given rise to a new word: kidult.
What lies behind the phenomenon One is about adults’ nostalgia (怀旧之情)for the carefree days of childhood, and this is especially true with today’s fast-paced, stressful lifestyles. Another is about a societal change in recent decades where people are starting families later. As a result, they have more time and money to spend on themselves. Some adults could only window-shop for their dream toys when they were kids, but now they can afford that radio controlled car or high-priced doll they have always wanted.
Businesses have been quick to exploit the kidult trend, and the number of toy stores that target adults has risen. Companies are repackaging products from past decades and also bringing out new ones for adults. Lego, for example, has brought out an architectural series featuring landmarks from around the world.
Society traditionally disapproves of adults who refuse to put aside childhood interests, viewing the refusal as a sign of social immaturity and irresponsibility. Those who agree with this view sometimes claim that kidults are suffering from the pop-psychology concept known as Peter Pan Syndrome, an anomaly (异常)that people remain emotionally at the level of teenagers. On a grander scale, these kidult opponents argue that such delayed adulthood causes couples to marry later and have fewer children. This in turn can lead to shrinking national economies, for there needs to be a generational replenishment(补充)of the workforce.
From the standpoint of kidults, though, this phenomenon is seen as nothing but harmless fun. Kidults insist that having youthful interests keeps them young, happy and creative, and their refusal to conform to society’s acceptable tastes shows independent thinking. Besides, they argue that being part of the social trend of delayed adulthood is not purely a personal choice. The real causes include expensive housing, increased educational requirements for employment and poor ork opportunities.
Whether the kidult phenomenon will continue to grow or prove to be a passing trend is anyone’s guess. As the debate about it continues, remember that there is nothing wrong with being young at heart.
28. What does the kidult phenomenon refer to
A. Adults act like children.
B. Adults have child-like tastes.
C. Adults go in for collecting toys.
D. Adults like playing with children.
29. Which of the following might cause the emergence of kidults
A. Different living conditions.
B. More choices about toys.
C. High pressure of modern life.
D. Good memories of childhood.
30. How does the text deal with the debate about kidults
A. By strongly opposing kidult opponents.
B. By convincing readers to accept kidults.
C. By refusing to take a stand on the issue.
D. By presenting both sides of the argument.
31. What can we infer about the author’s attitude towards the phenomenon from the last paragraph
A. Doubtful. B. Positive.
C. Disapproving. D. Uncaring.
D
For much of history, reading was a fairly noisy activity. In ancient Iraq and Syria some 4,000 years ago, the commonly used words for “to read” literally meant “to cry out” or “to listen". But today, silent reading is the norm. The majority of us bottle the words in our heads as if sitting in a quiet library. Reading out loud is largely kept for bedtime stories and performances.
However, a growing body of research suggests that we may be missing out by reading only with the voices inside our minds. The ancient art of reading aloud has a number of benefits for adults, from helping improve our memories and understand complex texts, to strengthening emotional bonds between people. Colin MacLeod, a psychologist at the University of Waterloo in Canada, has researched the impact of reading aloud on memory. He and his colleagues have shown that people consistently remember words and texts better if they read them aloud than if they read them silently. The effect of reading aloud is particularly strong in children, but it works for older people, too.MacLeod has named this phenomenon the “production effect”. It means that producing written words-that's to say, reading them out loud-improves our memory of them.
The production effect has been replicated in numerous studies for more than a decade. In one study in Australia, a group of seven- to- ten- year- olds were presented with a list of words and asked to read some silently, and others aloud. Afterwards, they correctly recognised 87% of the words they'd read aloud, but only 70% of the silent ones.
In another study, adults aged 67 to 88 were given the same task-reading words either silently or aloud-before then writing down all those they could remember. They were able to recall 27% of the words they had read aloud, but only 10% of those they'd read silently. When asked which ones they recognised, they were able to correctly identify 80% of the words they had read aloud, but only 60% of the silent ones. MacLeod and his team have found the effect can last up to a week after the reading task.
32. What can we know from the first two paragraphs
A. Reading aloud started in ancient Iraq and Syria.
B. People remember words better in a quiet library.
C. Reading aloud is beneficial to people of all ages.
D. Silent reading results in missing out some words.
33. What does the underlined word “replicated" in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Challenged.
B. Repeated.
C. Ignored.
D. Improved.
34. What are the two studies in the last two paragraphs intended to prove
A. There is no production effect at all.
B. Reading aloud improves memory.
C. Silent reading has an instant effect.
D. Children remember more words.
35. What can be a suitable title for the passage .
A. Reading aloud-an art from the past.
B. Reading silently-a new trend
C. Reading aloud-a blessing for memory.
D. Reading silently-a complex skill

M: Nancy, I know that you’re not going to forget how to spell your name. I’ll help you get through this. I’ll go to the school hall with you to practice. Then I’ll teach you an exercise my baseball coach taught me. Believe me. It works.
W: I feel much better now. Thanks, Daniel.

【原文】W: Hello, ladies and gentlemen! Today, we have invited Prof. Stone to talk about the role of elderly people in our society. Welcome to our show, Prof. Stone.
M: To begin with, I'd like to tell a story from my own life. Several years ago, when my grandparents were well into their 80s, they were no longer able to care for themselves very well. My grandfather was afraid of leaving the only home they had known for the past 60 years. The idea of having to sell their home and move into a retirement home was an extremely painful experience for them. Indeed, old age for them, and many old Americans can mean not only the possible failure of one's health, but the loss of identity and self-worth.
W: Yes, it's true. What do you have to say about the problem of old age
M: Many experts have given talks here that have focused on the medical care, and the development of public services for senior citizens. Today, I'd like to focus my comments on the meaningful roles that elderly can play and should play in our society.

【原文】W: Talking about personal relationships. Well, I’d naturally think of my relationship with my mother. Whenever I need help, my mother is always there for me. She often tells me that I can be anyone I want, as long as I’m confident of myself. She sees my talent and pushes me to do the best I possibly can. As I was growing up, we were often on the move. I had to admit that moving so often made me feel lonely. But my mother did everything she could to help me feel happy. In fact, so much traveling was really a good thing because it made us close. I respect my mother so much as she never treats me as a child, but as an equal. She gives me the freedom to make mistakes and to learn from them all. Unlike friendships that can fade or break, I know I’ll always be connected to my mother no matter what I face. She is not just a role model, but someone I love.

D. Uncaring.
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. D 31. B

【答案】32. C 33. B 34. B 35. C

Your neck muscles are designed to hold your head upright. ____37____. But bending your head forward for long periods of time can strain your muscles. That can make them sore.
In the past people spent most of their time looking up. But now people spend significant amounts of time looking down at their phones. They often hold them at waist or chest level. This causes people to crane their necks to see the phone, which, in turn, causes tech neck. ____38____.
It’s probably not realistic to expect people to give up their phones to avoid tech neck. But giving up technology altogether isn’t necessary. You can do things to avoid tech neck even while keeping your smartphone.
First you can hold your phone up so you don’t have to bend down to look at it. But this can be tiring for your arms. So keep your head upright, and look only with your eyes. Try to sit up straight in front of a screen as well, or it can hurt your back.
Also, take breaks. ____39____. If you’ve been sitting, stand up and walk around. Moving your body will help relax your muscles. If you continue experiencing tech neck, you can do exercise to strengthen your neck muscles.

故填without。
【62题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:没有分类的垃圾造成了许多问题。句中谓语动词为are,且没有连词,所以动词bring要以非谓语动词形式出现。非谓语动词bring与其逻辑主语problems之间为被动关系,所以用过去分词作后置定语。故填brought。
【63题详解】
考查冠词。句意:一方面,这是对资源的极大的浪费。固定短语“a great waste of......”译为“对……有极大的浪费”。故填a。
【64题详解】
考查定语从句。句意:另一方面,未分类的垃圾的处理会造成严重的环境污染,这对人们的健康有害。分析句子结构可知,此处为非限制性定语从句,先行词serious environmental pollution是物,在从句中做主语,所以用关系代词which引导非限制性定语从句。故填which。
【65题详解】
考查时态语态。句意:到目前为止,已经举行了许多活动来教人们如何正确地分类垃圾。根据时间状语So far(到目前为止)可知,此处使用现在完成时。主语many activities是复数,且与谓语动词hold之间为被动关系。故填have been held。
故填to exchange。
