A
From an early age, we were taught that if we wanted to be successful, we had to study hard and get good results at school. In fact, good students may just end up doing jobs they don't like, and some even lead an unhappy life. Why is it like that?
In some parents' eyes, school grades matter most for their kids. In reality, there are many things to consider besides the school subjects, for example, how to be a happy person, what to do to keep healthy, and how to get along well with others. That is to say, school is not just enough if you want to have a great life. Doing well in school is different from doing well in life. Studies show that people who failed at school may not end up failing in life.
You may have already known that some famous people, like Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs, didn't do very well at school or even failed to finish school. In fact, there are a lot more than just the big shots who are successful in life without finishing school. They seize (抓住) every chance to learn and finally make it to the top.
Life is really a long lesson, so long that you can't define (界定) a person's success by just one section (部分) of it.If you have already finished school, keep learning because what you have learned at school will never be enough to live a satisfying life. If you are still studying, whether you are good or bad at school, don't take your school results too seriously as long as you have put your heart into it. Keep learning to make the most of your talents (天赋). That's how you can live a happy and successful life.

If you have to describe yourself to someone else, what will you say?It can be difficult to see yourself from the outside, but knowing who you are, namely self-awareness, can help you understand feelings and make friendships closer.
Self-awareness means having a good understanding of our own character, that is, having the ability to see ourselves clearly. If you're self-aware, you may know that you love playing an instrument because you do well in it, and music makes you happy, or that you prefer watching TV on your own because it helps you relax.
Knowing what you like and dislike, what you do well in and what you find difficult allows you to make better decisions about friendships, schoolwork and so on. You learn to trust your own feelings more, which builds confidence(信心). The World Health Organization says self-awareness is one of ten important life skills that help young people live happier, healthier lives. Being self-aware doesn't mean only thinking of yourself. By understanding your own feelings, you will better understand other people too.
How do you learn to be self-aware?It's a good way to ask questions. But ask yourself questions that start with "What" instead of "Why". So if you don't understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you're arguing.
Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, which means you learn it as you grow. So be bold and try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different kinds of music. Don't be afraid to dislike something— discovering what you find difficult is a key part of learning more about yourself.

In recent years, there have been many films about robots trying to take over the world. Studies show that up to 20 million factory jobs worldwide could be taken by robots in the next 10 years. Some people are worried about what might happen in the future.
On 8" September, 2020,The Guardian published(发表)an article written by a robot called GPT-3. It wrote that "robot" comes from the Greek word for "slave"(奴隶)and humans have nothing to fear from robots, which are only here to help humans. However, the fact that a robot could write such an article has made some people feel even more uneasy. Where is the robot technology heading? Can robots and humans work together?
YES — they're here to help humans. Robots are created by humans for humans. Robots take on jobs that are too dangerous for people to do by themselves. Although robots might take some people's jobs, they will create new types of work, and they will possibly create more jobs than they take away. Besides, robots' programming could actually make them more trustworthy than humans, because they are not influenced by feelings.
NO — humans should not trust robots.Robots are already taking over the world. Jobs that used to be done by human beings are now being taken by robots. Although robots are under our control now, that might not always be the case. A
Most children are taught the virtue (美德) of honesty from stories. The well-known story of Pinocchio teaches the importance of telling the truth. Every time Pinocchio lies, his nose grows longer andlonger. Another story is about the boy who "cried wolf." In the end, he loses all his sheep and the trust of his fellow villagers because he tells lies many times. These types of stories show children that "honesty is the best policy." Still, if this is the case, then why do so many people lie?The fact is that people lie for many reasons.
One reason people lie is to minimize (减少) a mistake. While it is true that everyone does something wrong from time to time, some people do not have the courage to admit their errors (错误) because they are afraid they will be blamed. For example, students might lie to their teachers about unfinished homework. They might say that they left the work at home when, in fact, they did not do the work at all. These students do not want to get in trouble or seem irresponsible,so they make up an excuse- a lie- to save face.
Another reason for lying has to do with self-protection. Parents, particularly those with young children, may teach their children to use this type of "protective" lie in certain circumstances (状况). What should children do if a stranger calls while the parents are out? Many parents teach their children to explain that their mother and father are too busy to come to the phone at that time. In this situation, protective lying can mean greater safety.
People lie for many reasons, both good and bad. Lying to keep the peace or to stay safe can have positive results. However, lying to stay out of trouble can lead to more trouble in the end. Understanding the motives behind the impulse (冲动) to lie might minimize this habit of lying.
(1) What does the underlined word"this" refer to in the passage?
A. Honesty is the best policy.
B. The well-known story of Pinocchio.
C. The story of the boy who"cried wolf".
(2) Why do some children lie to their teachers?
A. Because they like making up an excuse.
B. Because they have left the homework at home.
C. Because they are afraid to be blamed at school.
(3) How does the writer explain why people tell lies?
A. By asking questions.
B. By giving examples.
C. By showing the results.
(4) What is the correct structure of the passage?( P-paragraph)
A.
B.
C.
(5) What's the best title for the passage?

This man-made waterway-known in China as Da Yun he - is 1,700 kilometers long and some parts of it are more than 2,000 years old. It links the north of China with Hangzhou, a city in the southern part of the country. It's the longest man- made waterway in the world.
It was built as a way to transport grain (谷物) from the rich agricultural land in China's south to cities in the north. In fact, it's not one canal, but a system of canals and rivers linked together. It's still an important part of the transport system in China. Thousands of boats use it every day to transport grain and many other types of cargo.
Now the Chinese government is doing new work on the Grand Canal, It is making parts of it deeper, so bigger ships can use it. The canal will also help to move water. There is a lot of rain in the south of China, but not as much in the north.
The canal will carry millions of liters of water from the south to the north. The Grand Canal is much less famous than the Great Wall, and not very many tourists visit it. But its possible to go on a cruise (乘船游览) along some of the oldest parts of the canal. Passengers on these cruises see beautiful parts of China that other visitors don't see.

"Oh, boys, don't throw stones at the poor bird," said an old grey-headed man.
"Sir," said a little one, "she makes such a loud noise that we can't bear her."
"I am afraid the stone will rebound (反弹) and hurt you as long as you live!"
"Rebound! We don't understand you, sir!"
"Well, I will tell you a true story. "
Fifty years ago, I liked throwing stones because I had no other boy to play with and I became very skillful. One day I went to work for an old couple who were very friendly to everybody, even to the birds. And the birds seemed to love the old couple, too. For seven years a bird had come and built her nest (鸟巢) in the same place. She and her mate had just returned on the day I went to work and the old couple welcomed them happily. During the day, I thought I would try my skill upon her. Suddenly the bird flew to a tree near me. I found a nice stone, and I threw it with my best skill. It hit the bird on the head and she dropped dead! "I was sorry the moment I saw her fall off the tree. But it was too late. Every living thing needs to reproduce. Reproducing means creating more members of your group. In order for plants to reproduce, they have to spread their seeds (种子)to other areas. Plants have developed all kinds of ways to do this.
The simplest way is gravity. Many seeds are inside of fruit. When a piece of fruit gets too heavy, it falls from a tree to the ground. Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area. That helps move the seed even farther away. Apples spread this way.
Other plants use wind to spread their seeds. Dandelions are a good example of this.Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows, it carries dandelion seeds to new places. Maple (枫树) seeds also use wind. Their seeds are connected with long, thin leaves that look like wings. When the seed falls from the tree, its "wings" help it fly farther from the tree.
Some animals help plants spread their seeds. The animals eat the seeds. While the seed is in the animal's body, it stays whole. When the seed leaves the animal, it's in a new place.
Ants also help spread seeds. Some seeds have a special smell that attracts ants. The ants bring the seeds back to their home, which of course is underground. They only eat part of the seed. They leave the rest of the seed underground. After that, the seed can start growing.
(1) What does the word "gravity" mean in the second paragraph?

Steve Taylor was in his room lying down for sleep while his mother Katelyn was taking a shower. She wanted to bathe before going to bed herself. The 5-year-old boy was just about to fall asleep when he heard a loud noise from the bathroom. He hurried to have a look. When he got to the bathroom, he found his mother lying in the bathtub(浴缸)with blood coming from her head. She had an epileptic fit(癫痫发作)and didn't know anything. However, little Steve kept a cool head.
He first went to his 2-month-old sister and put her in a blanket(毛毯),placing her on the sofa. He then climbed up a chair to open the door. Once the door opened, Steve picked her up from the sofa and went to his neighbor's house. The neighbor, Jessica, was very surprised to see her two young neighbors standing outside her door at such a strange hour.
She first thought the little boy was coming to talk about his dog. But he said, "No, my mom died in the shower. Can you take care of us?" Jessica ran to next door in a hurry and found Katelyn in the shower with the water still running. She called 911 and help arrived just in time. Ms. Taylor believed that her son saved her life. If not her son, she probably would have died right there in her bathtub. Steve was praised by the local fire department. So, it's exam time again.Have you done the necessary work to get good marks?Sleeping with the textbook under the pillow(枕头)doesn't work. The best way is to space your practice out, rather than cram (塞) it all together. Just as a scientist called Tom Stafford advises, if you organize five hours of study into one hour a day, you'll remember more than what you study for five hours on one day.
▲ Get pens and paper and start working!Students who can test themselves earlier will be better at retrieving the knowledge from the memory and keep it in the long run. John Dunlosky,a professor in the US,suggests that "you start by reading a textbook with your favorite pens and colors, and then write down the important ideas on small cards. While doing so,you actually try to test yourselves on them."
Good revision(复习)should give you confidence, but if you are still worried, it's not harmful to follow some special customs. In Japan, it seems to be a tradition for students to eat Katsudon before a test. This is a bowl of rice with egg and pork pieces. The name of the dish makes people think of the word "katsu",meaning "winning". For some students in South Korea, the key to success is not washing their hair before an exam, because they believe they could wash all the knowledge out of their heads. And in different parts of the world, there are always those who believe in their "lucky underwear".
The bottom line is that you need to study, eat a good meal, sleep well on the eve of the test, and believe that your efforts will pay off.
Good luck in your exam!
(1) When you "space your practice out",you ______ .
A. study for at least 5 hours on one day
B. sleep with your textbook under the pillow

A. Don't read your textbooks early.

(4) Which of the following is TRUE according to paragraph 3?
A. The word "Katsudon" sounds similar to "winning" in South Korea.
B. In some countries, washing hair brings bad luck after having exams.
C. Some people might wear special underwear before important events.
(5) What does the writer advise students to do before tests?

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard(果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals and other projects began to be built in my village, "Who are they?" I asked. "They are good men from our government," my grandma replied.
Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn't have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. Think of somebody you really admire. You will probably find that their success didn't come easily. As "Father of Hybrid Rice(杂交水稻)",Yuan Longping got over great difficulties and spent his whole life working to reduce world hunger and helping to feed the country with the largest population.
Wu Mengchao, the "Father of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery(肝胆外科)", focused on saving people's lives for nearly eighty years. He performed more than 16, 000 operations during his life. Holding the surgeon' s knife for such a long time deformed his fingers. Wu once said, "It would my greatest happiness if I could work at the operating table until my dying day."
In1969, in order to solve the problem of treating malaria (疟疾), Tu Youyou, pharmacologist (药学家) took on the job as head of a research team. She and her teammates performed different kinds of experiments. However, the results were disappointing. Instead of giving up, they kept trying. Finally, in1972, they made it! In2015, at the age of 85,she received Nobel Prize.
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb believed that every failure was a step towards success. He once said, "If I find 10, 000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed.I am not discouraged, because every wrong try is another step forward.

But I guess that was exactly what I did.

In a digital age,we almost never write things by hand. However, many studies have shown that this act has many benefits(益处).
New brain research, led by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, announces the same: choosing handwriting over using a keyboard results in better learning and memory.
"When you write your shopping list or notes by hand, you simply remember things better after some time, " said Audrey van der Meer, author of the study. The study was done using equipment to track and record brain wave activity. 12 young adults and 12 children took part in the study. Each person was asked to write by hand and type on a key board while wearing a hood(风帽)with over 250 electrodes(电极). The sensors(传感器) in the electrodes are very sensitive and catch the electrical activity that takes place in the brain. Each examination took 45 minutes per person.
The results show that the brain in both young adults and children is much more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard.According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses are activated by pressing a pen on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These sense experiences build connection between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the results show the importance of children's learning to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. "Learning to write by hand is a bit slower process, but it's important for children to go through the tiring process of learning to write by hand, " she said.
The hand movements are good for us in many ways. "If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your skills and senses. It's important to put the brain in a learning state as often as possible, " Van der Meer added. "You might use a keyboard to write an article, but you should learn by hand during a class. "

School uniforms are traditional in Britain. Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms. When every pupil in the school wears the uniform, nobody has to worry about fashion and they feel that they belong to a group. Some people believe that a school uniform can help students pay attention to schoolwork. But some schools in Britain and other countries are starting to drop the traditional uniforms.
An Australian school has decided to drop its traditional school uniform, hoping new sportswear will encourage students to take part in more activities. School headmaster Elisabeth Lenders said the uniform change had been in the works for several years. "We decided that in 2018-2019," she said. "The importance is clear:to make young people live happy, healthy lives. "
Ms Lenders said World Health Organization research reported 90 percent of young Australians and New Zealanders were not getting the minimum(最小的) daily levels of activity they needed in order to lead a healthy life. As well as the new uniform, she said the school would change timetables to make sure there would be chances for students to take part in physical activity every day.
Ms Lenders said in the past, a uniform was about all looking the same but in the 21st century it was important for students to be able to choose clothes that they liked.
And this Australian school had made an online survey about the uniform change and had received great support from parents and students. Tara, mother of Ava in Year 7,said it was a great move from the school. "These are the challenges of our time, and we want young people to think about them, " she said. "It is bigger than just throwing out the old uniform. It's about what the role of education is about. And for me it's helping young people to live a happy, healthy and productive life. "

Chemistry is about the smallest things that other bigger things are made of, and what happens when they change. The word chemistry comes from chemical, which is an example of one type of the very small things that other bigger things are made of. The words you are reading now are made of a dark liquid called ink (墨水), which is written on paper. The paper itself is made out of the chemicals that wood is made out of. Both the ink and the paper were made by different chemical processes. A chemical process is what happens when chemicals come together to make other chemicals, and therefore other things.
Cooking makes chemical changes. Your different ingredients are made of different chemicals, and when you put them together and make them hot and cook them, the chemicals change into new chemicals and the different ingredients make something new.
That tomato sauce you're making is made of tomatoes, onions, garlic, salt and pepper. Those ingredients each have their own chemicals and their own flavors, but now with your sauce you've made something different, something that has its own flavor, all the ingredients mixed together, all the chemicals mixed together, something new. You can smell the chemical changes, too, as they go up into your nose, especially when you forget about your sauce and it doesn't just cook but bums and becomes black and has a really bad flavor. You can't make it better, either, because once chemicals change, they can't be changed back again.
(1) What does the underlined word "they" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. How to make tomato sauce.
B. What to use to form new things.
C. Ingredients and their own flavors.
D. Chemical changes in cooking food.
(4) Which might be the best title for the text?

INTRODUCTION It's hard to believe that I wrote Number the Stars more than twenty years ago.It seems like yesterday that I answered the phone on a snowy January morning and received the news that it had won the 1990 Newbery Medal(美国纽伯瑞儿童文学奖).I think readers of every age may match themselves with the important persons in the books they love and ask themselves:Would I have done that? What choice would I have made? And ten-the age of Annemarie in Number the Stars-is an age when young people are beginning to develop a strong set of personal ethics(道德观;价值观). They are beginning to realize that the world they live in is not always good and safe. So they follow a story about a ten-year-old girl who is caught in a dangerous situation, and she must make decisions. So am I. We both love thinking of the children reading the story today, coming to it for the first time and realizing that once, for a short time and in a small place, a group of prejudice-free (不存偏见的) people created a touching story of love and kindness towards others. When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food.
Anything we didn't eat at one meal was leftovers (剩菜). I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes leftover. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon (煎培根)for us in the mornings, she would always take the oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn't actually taste like bacon!
I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. I always planned the week's meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself my boys, my husband or my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was just wrong.
However, when it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Life is just like a feast. Each moment that you don't live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning. Live each moment of your life to the fullest, then.

Can plants talk Modern research has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help:"I'm being attacked!" When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps (黄蜂;蜜蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can't hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the "wood wide web". The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi (霉菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a "firewall" to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to "talk" with them ourselves.
(1) What will plants do when they are attacked by insects?
A. They will kill the insects by themselves.
B. They will control the wasps to kill the insects.
C. They will send out signals to ask for help.
D. They will produce chemicals as a warning or a call for help.
(2) How are the wood wide web linked by fungi?
A. By making noises with their roots.
B. By connecting the roots of different plants to each other.
C. By sharing food and information with each other.
D. By spreading chemicals to each other.
(3) What is the writer's intention of the last paragraph?
A. To give people hope for further studies.

D. To inspire people to communicate with plants.
(4) What is the structure of the passage?
