Background
“派对”是英文party的音译，其含义为 a social gathering for pleasure or entertainment, 即社交聚会。它是人们聚在一起庆祝和休闲的一种方式，旨在联络情感、交谈和放松。派对的典型特征包括饮食、音乐歌舞或其他娱乐活动。西方派对文化体现了人与人之间积极沟通和交往的态度。
西方英语国家的派对五花八门、名目繁多。从类型上看，许多关乎社交，如：birthday party，surprise party，dinner party，tea party，housewarming party（乔迁聚会），welcome party，end-of-term school party等；也有一些涉及节日，如：New Year party，Easter party等。从参加者的年龄及性别特点着眼，派对的形式包括parties for teenagers and young adults，hen party（只有女性参加的聚会）及stag party（只有男性参加的聚会）等。
从地点上看，除个人在家庭中举办的派对外，还有学校、机构在单位举办的联谊、庆祝活动，以及在宾馆、饭店、酒吧举办的正式及休闲派对，如dances and balls（社交舞会），block party（社区或街区欢聚），costume or fancy dress party（化装舞会）。还有一些专门设在户外举办，例如sea shore party，bonfire party（篝火联欢会）。甚至有些派对主办者会收取门票费用。一般派对有正式和非正式之分，大致可分成三种类型：聚集式、家庭式和宴会式。
聚集式：一种较随意的聚会，只要主办人提前发个邀请，说明时间地点就行了。到了那天，各人带上自己做的饭菜或买来的食品，包括点心、饮料、水果等，放在一起，供来者分享。
家庭式：以节日或其他理由邀请客人前来参加的聚会。通常都是主人款待一切，来客多为熟人，也就无须过于拘礼。但美国人常常还延续一些欧洲人的习惯，给主人家带上一点小礼品，如鲜花、小工艺品、水果、点心等以示友好，增添欢喜。
宴会式：较为正式，多为鸡尾酒会形式。会场内设有椅子，大家站着随意交流，吃的也是简单但却精致的自助餐。

Language points
1. turn down an invitation（教材P69 2b）
turn down 意为“拒绝”，相当于 refuse。turn down为“动词+副词”型短语，代词作宾语时，必须放在turn和down之间。
I turned down her help because I could finish it myself.
They offered her a job but she turned it down.
turn down 拒绝
turn down还可表示“调低（音量、温度等）”。反义词组是turn up“调高（音量、温度等）”。
2. Reply（教材P69 2b）
reply作动词，过去式为replied。其用法如下：
reply v. 回答；答复
reply
reply to sb./sth. 答复某人/回应某物
reply with 以……来回应
reply + that从句 回答说……
He is busy checking and replying to emails.
The salesgirl(女售货员) replied with a smile.
She replied that she had changed her mind.
3. Forward（教材P69 2b）
①forward在此处作动词，意为“转寄；发送”。此处指的是发电子邮件。forward sb. sth. = forward sth. to sb.，意为“把某物转寄/发送给某人”。
Please forward John this letter. = Please forward this letter to John .
②forward还可作副词，意为“向前；前进”。反义词是backward“向后”。
He took two steps forward.

take a trip后接地点时，要加介词to，同义短语为go on a trip。

at the end of 后面可以接时间或地点，反义短语为 at the beginning of“在……的开始”。
