Nick Vujicic is a great speaker, born in Melbourne, Australia on the 4th of December, 1982. He has no arms and legs. There is no medical explanation for it. In school, he was the first disabled child to be integrated into the Australian school system. He was laughed at, avoided and not included on purpose from games. At age 6. Nick tried some prosthetics(假肢) but they were more of restriction than aid because they limited his movement. Apparently, he had learnt how to do some things without them. Unfortunately, he severely battled with depression at age 8. He felt he would always be a burden for the rest of his life, These thoughts made his prospects in life as a fantasy. He just had one desire —arms and legs, that’s all.
At age 10, though his home was a refuge from the external storms, he couldn’t manage to deal with the rejections he faced outside. Then he tried to drown himself but the love he had for his parents discouraged him from doing so. Nick had his Bachelor’s degree in commerce at Griffith University. One day, his mum noticed his situation affected his life and decided to show him a newspaper article that featured a man that had a severe disability, much more than Nick’s.
From that moment on, Nick Vujicic became grateful for life. He also said he found peace after he got his relationship with himself. Although he couldn’t make some things happen easily, he believed it was not what you had but what you did with it. Therefore, he frequently tells himself he is not afraid to fail or try again. Today, he writes up to 43 words per minute, can throw tennis balls, play the drums, get a glass of water and also answer a phone call.

In the past decade, the use of social media has grown in a way that no one could have guessed. It has turned some teenagers into celebrities and turned the famous into the infamous, overnight.
A key feature of social media, however, is its volatility. Trends come and go, disappearing almost as quickly as they appeared.
Short video apps such as Tik Tok and its Chinese equivalent (对应物) Douyin, took the world by storm. The Telegraph reported that Tik Tok was ranked 8th on Apple's App Store in April. And Douyin had more than 300 million domestic monthly active users in June, CNBC said.
Why are these short videos, which are rarely longer than a few minutes, so popular Jiang Yige, Singapore-based analyst at Feng He Fund Management, has a theory. "Short videos are just right to fill in the little gaps in our busy schedules," he told CNBC.
These videos--apart from being very convenient--are important to teenagers because they allow them to express themselves, according to Teen Vogue.
Liza Koshy, a user of the US app Musical. ly who has over 2 million followers, said, "The sense of community that users of short video apps get is another appealing feature."
Live streaming (直播) is a feature of our social media life that now seems as natural as sunrise. It's a pretty neat idea : You can watch anyone, anywhere, live. However , China has taken live streaming to a whole new level. In China, more than 100 million viewers monthly watch a live streaming video. Forbes thought that a number of factors had led to the popularity of live streams. Among them is viewers' ability to interact with others using unknown names.
However, the quick development of social media may be having side effects too. Fake news is one serious problem it causes. Materials shared on these platforms are often not checked for accuracy. The most basic content can be false and can mislead users one way or another. We use social media all the time; that doesn't mean that we understand the influence it is having on us. We should be mindful of both the time we spend on it and its impact on our minds.
28. The underlined word "volatility" in Paragraph 2 possibly means "being________".
A. changeable B. steady
C. promising D. violent
29. According to Liza Koshy, short videos are very popular because_____.
A. they are very convenient
B. they help people kill time
C. they provide a sense of community
D. they allow people to express themselves
30. What do we know about social media
A. The information from social media is totally reliable.
B. When it comes to social media, people only know short videos.
C. People can't communicate with each other without social media.
D. There is still much room for improvement in social media.
31. What is the author's attitude to the quick development of social media
A. Objective. B. Subjective.
C. Favorable. D. Disapproving.
D
Researchers may have found a way to keep plants from dying of thirst. They developed a soil additive(添加剂).It will steal water from the air to share with plants.
Their invention is a super-moisture-absorbent gel (SMAG.高吸湿凝胶). It absorbs water from the air during the night. When the sun warms it the next day, that gel releases its accumulated water into the root zone of the plants.
Guihua Yu, an engineer at the University of Texas at Austin, led the team that developed the gel. The gel mixed with soil absorbs water and holds it. The next day, rather than allowing it to evaporate (蒸发), the gel instead slowly releases that water into the soil.
The engineers tested the soil additive to grow carrots. During an experiment, they compared carrots grown in sandy soil alone with carrots grown in sandy soil that had been mixed the gel. The gel-treated soil lost about 60 percent of the water after about a month. In contrast, the untreated soil lost 80 percent of its water in just one week.
Jeff Hattey is a soil scientist. He says similar additives have been used in potting soil for many years. He says the gel works in a similar way. “The big questions for me are, first, how much SMAG-soil would you have to use How long does it last once it’s in the soil ”
Yu believes future studies will help his team understand if the gel could be used for larger, outdoor fields. If it can, the water in the air could allow crops to be grown in dryer climates, where irrigation is not practical. It shouldn’t hurt the bacteria or worms that are needed to keep soil healthy for growing things. The gel also should pose no risks if it washes into lakes or streams. The research team hopes to confirm that in the near future.
32. How does SMAG get water
A. By absorbing water from the root zone.
B. By absorbing water from air.
C. By absorbing water from plants.
D. By absorbing water from soil.
33. What can we infer from Hattey’s words
A. The SMAG is a totally new invention.
B. People will use SMAG-soil soon.
C. Scientists have to do more for SMAG.
D. SMAG has a lot of advantages.
34. What will Guihua Yu probably do in the near future
A. Let SMAG have fewer side effects on soil.
B. Prove whether SMAG is safe to environment.
C. Make SMAG keep soil healthy.
D. Make SMAG acceptable by people.
35. What may be the suitable title for the text
A. An invention of making plants grow in a dry climate
B. An invention of making plants grow quickly
C. An invention of defeating droughts
D. An invention of protecting the soil
第二节七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Getting Lost in a Good Book Can Help Keep You Healthy
I’m a novelist and it’s obviously in my interest to encourage people to read. But there’s increasing evidence that reading isn’t just for pleasure, or merely a way of improving literacy skills and factual knowledge. 36
Firstly, reading helps to lengthen attention spans in children and improves their ability to think clearly. 37 It is essential to learn this skill as a small child. The more they do it, the better they get at it.
Also, reading can help people learn to empathize(产生共鸣). A recent study at the University of Michigan found that there had been a 48% decrease in empathy among college students. 38 In a computer game, you might have rescued a princess, but you don’t care about her, you just want to win. But a princess in a book has a past, present and future, she has connections and motivations. We can relate to her. We see the world through her eyes.
As a matter of fact, reading is far from a passive activity. Reading exercises the whole brain. When we read and imagine the landscapes, sounds, smells and tastes described on the page, the various areas of the brain that are used to process these experiences in real life are activated, creating new neural pathways. 39 This doesn’t happen when we’re watching TV or playing a computer game.
Getting sucked into a good novel appears to be beneficial to our mental health too. 40 Reading not only avoids feelings of loneliness, it helps us to wind down, de-stress and forget our own problems for a while.
A.Stories have a structure that encourages their brains to think in sequence, to link cause, effect and significance.
B.In other words, our brains model real experiences, just as if we were living them ourselves.
C.When we read a good book, we’re trying to find out its main idea.
D.It might actually be good for our mental and physical health too.
E.But those who did not enjoy these activities had lots of loss.
F.As the old saying goes, “ You’re never alone with a book.”
G.Encouraging reading could overcome this.

Todd was freshman at Marin Luher King Jr. College Preparatory High School. When the other kids noticed he was always wearing the same black pants and blue shirt, Todd had no choice but to endure the arrows of ridicule and laughter shot to him. Although he was hurt, there was little Todd could do. His mother simply couldn't afford to buy him new clothes.
Pansy and Poppy were among the kids who often made ill-intended remarks about Todd’s clothes. But over time they came to the realization that their words felt like bullying and seemed to be slowly crushing Todd’s spirit. Something finally clicked. “I should do something,” Pansy thought to himself. So he and Poppy hatched a plan. They went home and hunted through their own drawers and closets.
The next day at school, they met Todd at their third period class and asked him to come into the hall. Todd was understandably concerned about being called out by the larger boys. “What...do…you want from…me ” Todd stammered, rubbing hands nervously. “We apologize for laughing at you, and we want to give something to you to make it up,” Pansy said softly, a smile blooming on his face. He then handed Todd a bulky bag. Inside were clean shirts and shorts, plus a brand-new pair of New Balance sneakers.
Todd was blown away. He couldn't believe what these used-to-be bullies did. When he held the bag full of clothes, tears flowed like a stream. Before he could utter a “thank you”, Pansy and Poppy went back to the classroom saying that they would meet him in the school canteen.
Todd got much more than some clothes. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I’m more than delighted to hear from you. In your letter, you asked me about my career choice for the future, so I’m now writing to share my views about it.
In the future, I’m going to be a doctor. For one thing, if I am a doctor, I can make use of what I have learned to relieve patients’ pains and even save their lives. For another, I have always shown great interest in Chinese medicine, which features magic effect. Should I be admitted by a medical college this year, I would make every effort to rediscover the value of Chinese medicine making it more popular in the world.
Best wishes!
第二节 读后续写
Todd got much more than a new wardrobe. At lunch time, Todd met Pansy and Bobby in the school cafeteria. Todd thanked them and they made a sincere communication. Since then they always have lunch together. They became good friends. He no longer sat alone at lunch. He ate with his new friends. After school, they often played together. “Everyone used to bully me,” Todd told CBS News. Speaking of the day Pansy and Bobby called him into the hall, he added, “It was the best day of my life.”
Todd’s life has become different. After Todd and Pansy and Bobby became good friends, many children began to get along well with him, just like Pansy and Bobby. No one laughed at Todd anymore. They realized that constantly laughing at others was a kind of bullying, which would blow a person's spirit and was a very cruel thing. On the contrary, they should learn more about their classmates and help them. Later, they founded an anti-bullying association, calling on students to help each other and say “no” to school bullying!
