Alvin Bamburg was deep in the woods when something caught his eye. As Bamburg approached, he found it was a broken balloon with a note: “Dear Santa, my name is Luna. I am four years old. I live in Liberal, Kansas. This year I have been nice. I would like candy, Frozen doll, dog. With love, Luna.”
Bamburg felt his heartbeat quickened. Ever since he was a child, he had dreamed of this. “Years ago,” he says, “classes at school released balloons with notes. I’ve always wanted to find one.” He believed this was his childhood wish coming true. And he knew he would make Luna’s wish come true too.
On January 2, 2021, Bamburg posted a photo of the balloon and the Christmas list on his Facebook page, asking for help locating the sender. At first, he wasn’t confident the strategy would work. But as he saw the number of people sharing his post increase by the hundreds, “My hope grew into expectations,” Bamburg says.
At around the same time, Leticia Flores, the mother of four—year—old Luna, had no idea that such an effort was underway. One day last December, Luna had an idea of sending letters to Santa by balloon. Flores helped her write the letters, put the notes into festive red balloons and took her outside to release the wishes.

Vehicles （车辆） were turned over and roofs were torn from houses after a tornado was seen forming over a northern New South Wales town late on Thursday.
A clean—up is under way in Armidale, in the state’s Northern Tablelands, after a violent storm hit the area and knocked out power for half the town.
The tornado followed an evening of terrible storms over Greater Sydney which saw hailstones （冰雹）, as large as five centimetres in diameter, fall across western and south—west Sydney. Apart from this, several thunderstorms also hit the state’s east coast.
Meteorologist （气象学家） Grace Legge said the tornado caused significant amounts of damage. “Through Armidale, we saw a very strong thunderstorm push through about 10 pm,” she said. “It did cause a tornado to touch down in the area which, unfortunately, caused significant amounts of damage. It was quite a quick—moving storm, but with stronger, violent winds.”
The State Emergency Services （SES） received 475 requests for help overnight, with 127 of those coming from citizens in Armidale. Officer Sharon Fox said it was surprising there were no reports of serious injuries after the tornado. “There were reports of roads that had been blocked, reports of large trees falling done, several reports of power lines coming off,” Ms Fox said. “It was a pretty terrible impact there in Armidale.”
A report posted by the SES this morning said half of Armidale was without power and the emergency services and uncompleted repairs were going to take some time.

But the researchers overlooked that messiness might have its advantages as well. In an—other experiment, the participants were asked to come up with new uses for ping—pong balls. The participants in the messy room got the same number of ideas for new uses for the balls as the ones in the clean—room did, but their ideas were considered as more interesting and creative.
“Being in a messy room led to something that firms, industries and societies want more of: creativity,”Vohs said. “The researchers also found that disorderly environments seem to inspire breaking free of tradition, which can produce fresh ideas,” Vohs said. “Orderly environments, in contrast, encourage tradition and playing it safe,” Vohs added. “Just making that environment tidy or untidy made such a great difference in people’s behavior.”
