【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to
get the targeted information efficiently by using such listening skills as marking key words, taking notes, inferring, etc;
master some English pronunciation skills like linking and loss of plosives and identify the differences between Am.E and Br.E in pronunciation;
voice their opinions about the benefits of foreign language learning through communication with peers;
be aware of the significance of learning foreign languages.
【Learning Procedures】
Activity 1 Talking about languages and introducing the topic
This activity is designed to prepare for Aim 1.
1. Know about “Hello” in different languages.
Q: What do you usually say to greet others Can you say “Hello” in another language
2. Talk about the countries and their languages in the textbook.
Q: What do the words in the pictures mean What language is it Which country is it
You see, there are so many languages around the world. Let’s listen and explore more about them.
[设计意图]了解“你好”在不同语言中的说法，引入的单元主题：世界上的语言。逐个听六副图片中不同语言“你好”的发音，猜测图片所代表的国家及其语言，认识到语言的多样性，为本节课的听力任务做好准备。
Activity 2 Listening for information by applying skills
Step 1 Activating and applying skills used before listening
This activity is designed for Aim 1.
1. Recall the prior knowledge about the listening skills.
Q: Before listening, what would you do
2. Acquire the listening skill of getting the main topic of a speech.
Q: How can you get the main topic of a speech Where do you usually find the topic In the beginning part, the middle, or the ending part
3. Listen for the main topic of the speech and tell the reasons for choosing the answer.
[设计意图] 唤醒已有的听力技能, 读题并标记重点词。学生思考如何快速获取一篇演讲的主旨大意。完成该部分听力后，核对答案并陈述理由。
Step2 Listening for some detailed information and taking notes (skills needed while listening)
This activity is designed for Aim 1.
1. Read the questions and mark the key words.
2. Think about what to take and how to take notes.
3. Take notes using Arabic numerals, symbols and abbreviations while listening.
[设计意图] 养成在听前自主读题、标记关键词的习惯，同时运用记笔记这一听力技能，根据关键词来确定笔记的主要内容和方向，学会速记，比如数字用阿拉伯数字、语言用缩写形式等。
Step3 Listening and figuring out the reference of pronouns
This activity is designed for Aim 1.
1. Identify the reference to the pronouns in the sentence “They think it means better job chances in the future.”
2. Listen to the sentence and locate the information that “they” and “it” refer to.
3. Pay attention to the context of words to help understand what the pronouns refer to.
[设计意图] 通过边听边填空来补全信息的方式找准代词所指代的内容，学会通过关注上下文信息来获取代词的指代内容。
Step4 Inferring the speaker’s attitude
This activity is designed for Aim 1.
Infer the speaker’s attitude based on the given question.
Q: From the previous listening tasks, can you infer the speaker’s attitude towards foreign language learning

Activity 3 Learning tips on pronunciation and sharing ideas
Step 1 Learning pronunciation skills
This activity is designed for Aim 2 and prepare for Aim 3.
1. Learn pronunciation skills of linking and lost plosives.
2. Practice linking and lost plosives.
[设计意图]通过学习相关的语音知识，形成一定的语音意识；练习相关的发音技巧：连读和失去爆破，提升发音技巧，形成良好的英语发音和一定的语感。
Step 2 Sharing ideas about the benefits of learning foreign languages
This activity is designed to prepare for Aim 3.
Discuss the benefits of learning foreign languages with the pronunciation skills in mind.

Activity 4 Concluding the lesson and assigning the homework
This activity is designed for Aim 4.
1. Appreciate the quote by Frank Smith to be aware of the benefits of learning foreign languages.
2. Complete the assigned homework.
