Normally, a phone conversation with my older sister Jenna would end with sisterly
jokes. But this time, we both said, “I love you.” Days later, aged 28, Jenna died of a serious
disease.
Losing Jenna was the most terrible thing I’d ever experienced, but five years on I can
see that it also shaped who I am today. Jenna encouraged me to find humor at the darkest
of times, and her death gave me a sense of fearlessness - which led to me becoming a
stand-up comedian.
At 31, I now see that life’s too short to worry about my own insecurities. Growing up
together, the two of us were incredibly close. We stuck together and even shared a room.
Lying in our beds at night, Jenna would sing Sleeping Satellite by Tasmin Archer to me
when I got scared of the dark.
I was studying at university when I was told that Jenna had a serious disease. I had no
idea what to do, how to react or what to say. But when I got to the hospital, Jenna took my
hand and said, “Jayde, can you make everyone laugh They’re all looking at me like I’m
about to die and it’s getting on my nerves.”
From that point on, during Jenna’s regular hospital stays, I’d joke around and try to
lighten the mood. I wanted to make everyone around her stop acting like she was about to
die - because we didn’t know that she was.
When she did die two years later, it was a complete shock. Seeing her in hospital in the
end, connected to machines, was awful - as was seeing my parents’ sadness. But I still joked
around, making fun of her for not taking care of her eyebrows. She died that same day.
Nothing can prepare you for losing your sister. I felt like I didn’t know what to do
without her. It took two years for the sadness to start to lift, but when it did, I began seeing
life differently.
I’d watched my sister die, so I knew nothing else could hurt as much. I found myself
letting go of all the insecurities that had held me back previously. It was around then that I
entered the Funny Women competition - something I would never have had the confidence
to do before Jenna’s death.
My win marked a huge turning point in my career and led to my recent show at the
Soho Theatre in London. I sometimes wonder if I’d be doing all this if Jenna hadn’t died.
But the thing is, she did - and this is what I’ve been left with.

The United States Department of Agriculture has a program called Wildlife Services.
Its job is to help protect agricultural and other resources. Often that means helping
farmers deal with unwelcome visitors. This organization has experts from different fields
and it has set up thousands of inquiry centers all over the country where farmer can
explain their difficulty and get practical help.
One example from Wildlife Services of its work involved a farmer in Washington State
in the Pacific Northwest. Several years ago, thousands of Canada geese landed on his fields.
The geese began to eat his carrot crop. Biologists from the program suggested that the
farmer use noise-making devices and other measures to scare the large birds away. These
efforts succeeded, which made the farmer quite happy. Wildlife Services also has a
livestock protection program. The program just offers suggestions to keep those
unwelcome visitors away instead of killing them. The Wildlife Services program is part of
the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, or APHIS. APHIS offers some suggestions
of ways to keep away predators. For example, try to keep food and water safe from wildlife.
Fences may help keep out wolves, especially if the fences are at least two meters high.
Experts suggest providing secure shelter for chickens, sheep and other animals that

could be attacked. They also suggest using lights above places where these animals are kept.
And they advise people who see wolves to chase them away by shouting, making loud
noises or throwing rocks. And to protect livestock, consider using guard animals such as
dogs and donkeys, which are very effective.
For home gardeners, a two-meter fence might help keep out deer. To keep out rabbits,
a wire fence has to be only about a half-meter high. It should extend fifteen centimeters
underground to keep rabbits from digging under it. If snakes are a problem, remove dead
trees and cut high grass to destroy their hiding places. Due to its effective work, ever since
the Wildlife Services was started, it has been well received by farmers all over the States
and neighboring countries such as Canada and Mexico.

It seems that we are one step closer to finding alien life and maybe a future home for
humanity. Scientists from NASA have found a new solar system filled with planets that
look like the Earth and could even support life.
The group of seven planets, which orbits a star called Trappist-1, is 39 light years
away from the Earth in the constellation of Aquarius(水瓶座). And three of them are in the
“habitable zone” - the area around a star where water is most likely to be found. This is
important because water is necessary for life.

many planets, but because they are all surprisingly similar in size to the Earth”,

Trappist-1 is a “dwarf star(矮星)” which is colder and shines dimmer than our sun. If
a person were on one of the seven planets, everything would look a lot darker than usual.
The amount of light heading toward our eyes would be about 200 times less than we get
from the sun, according to The Independent.
Because of that, Trappist-1, together with many other dwarf stars, was never on the
list of places where scientists looked for alien life. But Michael Gillon, lead researcher
behind the discovery, decided to give dwarf stars a chance. He built a telescope in Chile to
observe 60 of the closest dwarf stars, and it turned out that Trappist-1 was worthy of the
effort.
The researchers hope that they can spend more time watching the newly found planets
to learn more about them. Even though more research is needed before determining
whether these planets could really support life, the discovery is still encouraging. It shows
just how many Earth-size planets could be out there.
“[The discovery] gives us a hint that finding a second Earth is not just a matter of if,
but when,” NASA scientist Thomas Zurbuchen told The Telegraph.

Many parents who welcome the idea of turning off the TV and spending more time
with the family are still worried that without TV they will constantly be on call as
entertainers for their children. They remember thinking up all sorts of things to do when
they were kids. But their own kids seem different, less resourceful, somehow. When there’s
nothing to do, these parents observe regretfully, their kids seem unable to come up with
anything to do besides turning on the TV.
One father, for example, says. “When I was a kid, I was always thinking up things to do,
projects and games. We certainly never complained in an annoying way to our parents, ‘I
have nothing to do!’” He compares this with his own children today: “They’re simply lazy.
If someone doesn’t entertain them, they’ll happily sit there watching TV all day.”
There is one word for this father’s disappointment: unfair. It is as if he were
disappointed in them for not reading Greek though they have never studied the language.
He deplores his children’s lack of inventiveness, as if the ability to play were something
innate(天生的)that his children are missing. In fact, while the tendency to play is built into
the human species, the actual ability to play, to imagine, to invent and to gain fulfillment
from it are skills that have to be learned and developed.
Such disappointment, however, is not only unjust, it is also destructive. Sensing their

parents’ disappointment, children come to believe that they are, indeed, lacking something,
and that this makes them less worthy of admiration and respect. Giving children the

From my perspective, the motto “Together for a Shared Future” throws light on the
core values and vision of the Olympic. Making its way through a history of chaos and war,
the Olympics survived and thrived, thanks to its spirits of being together to pursue the
faster, the higher and the stronger. Thus, this motto can be regarded not only as an
accurate illumination of the Olympic spirits, but also as a most vivid portrait of Chinese
people’s wishes to develop a community with shared future. Today, so confident, open and
inclusive is China that it is sending this invitation to the whole world to bring out the best
of this great country.
In the end, I wish the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics a complete success!
