Passage 1 神奇的手表
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was time to go home. “Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,” Miss Walker called as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the comer, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want 10 nm after him. Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jenny put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really DID have something magic about it.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”

Paragraph 1:
Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jenny, waiting for an explanation. Jenny didn’t answer. How could she explain about the watch and its magic No one could understand. No one could believe. “But I saw you wearing it yesterday,” Miss Walker gently reminded him. For a moment Lee remained silent and then he apologized he had just remembered that. Jenny was relieved saying she had found it on the way home and decided to return it after the speech. Everybody was puzzled and asked why. Jenny again was speechless.
Paragraph 2:
Miss Walker smiled and asked the class to listen to Jenny’s speech first. Jenny walked slowly to the front. She couldn’t think properly. All round her, a sea of faces was watching. She felt so frightened and the watch didn’t seem magical at all. Suddenly she saw Miss Walker’s encouraging eyes. Jenny took a deep breath. “I’m going to talk about swimming…” Ten minutes later the whole class stood up applauding Jenny’s wonderful speech. Jenny smiled as she eventually realized the real source of confidence.
Passage 2 学会接纳自己
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When Jayce Crowder was in kindergarten, he began noticing that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. But he had only one.
It started when one boy teased him. Jayce was in a bad mood. He'd return home in Des Moines, Iowa, with questions: Why am I different Why me Why “He actually told us that he was mad at looking so different from others," said his mother, Cortney Lewis. “That really hurt him."
Lewis admitted she didn't know what to do at that point. How could she provide answers to her son's questions when she had never found those answers herself
A few weeks later, Lewis came home from her job and turned on the TV to a news story about Trashaun Willis, an eighth grader from Washington, Iowa. The boy, then 14, had become an Internet star after posting videos of his slam clunks(扣篮),and, like Jayce, he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. He was shocked, staring at one dunk after another.
At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce---he'd see a shining role model with a seemingly similar born disability. And had it stayed just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that a family friend had already reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to build Jayce‘s confidence.
“It reassured me," said Lewis. “I know in my heart that everything's going to be OK. Trashaun has grown up to be a wonderful kid. And I know Jayce is too."
Trashaun did get serious with Jayce. Finally, the boys met at Washington Middle School on a Saturday afternoon a couple of months later, in April 2017, and they instantly bonded.

Paragraph 1:
The day was not spent on self-pity-it was really fun and unforgettable. They rode bikes around the school’s hallways, took photos, and played hide-and-seek. Trashaun taught Jayce how to slam dunks. He even gave Jayce a shirt as a gift. He talked about their left arms. He told Jayce he was perfect the way he looked. He encouraged him not to let anyone drag him down and shake his confidence.
Paragraph 2:
After the meeting, Jayce learned to accept his disability. He began to understand that there are many people like him. He came to adapt himself to his disability. He recently started practising shooting basketball every day and he really loves it. Jayce often chats with Trashaun on the Internet about basketball skills as well as some school issues. He is really motivated by this role model and has a positive attitude to his future life. As for Trashaun, he never dreamed that his videos would have such an impact. His relationship with Jayce made him look forward to helping more kids.
Passage 3 摆脱害羞
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I looked out at the smiling faces packed into the school hall. Flashes from cameras lit up in all directions. The applause (掌声) filled my ears. I had done it. I had really done it.
Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people. "Not for a million dollars," I would have said. But when the time came, I got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears—and discovered I could do more than I ever gave myself credit (认可) for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.
If not for my teacher, Mrs. Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.
In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people's conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy.
My teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was one of the first people to see my inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written. "I'll begin to cast (挑选演员) everyone tomorrow," she said. "I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody want to try " A few excited hands shot up—mine, of course, was not one of them—and Mrs. Sather smiled. "We'll talk more about it tomorrow," she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.

Paragraph 1:
When I was loading up my backpack Mrs. Sather asked me to go to her. Mrs. Sather stared into my eyes as if seeing my inner self locked away inside. "I would love you to give this a try for me. But if you really don't want to, I won't make you. It is your choice. " Mrs. Sather wanted me in this role. She shocked me, for I was always a shy person, not even dare to speak loud in public.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing Mrs Sather's words, I realized it was time to make a change. I decided to throw off my shy cloak. I wanted to prove that I also could do something good in public. After seconds of hesitation, I nodded my head confidently saying " Mrs Sather I want to, no, I am determined to play the role. And I will try my best to perform it well." Looking at me with a big smile on face, Mrs Sather said "I believe in you. If you met some problem, you can turn to me." "Thank you!" I left her office happily.
Passage 4 妈妈和篮子改变了我
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Two things changed my life: my mother and a white, plastic, daisy bike basket. I have thought long and hard about it and it’s true. I would be a different person if my mom hadn’t turned a silly bicycle accessory(配件) into a life lesson I carry with me today.
My mother and father were united in how to educate children, but it mostly fell to my mother to put it into practice. Looking back, I honestly don’t know how she did it. If we complained about not having what another kid did, we’d hear something like, “I don’t care what Jack got for his birthday, you are not getting a TV in your room / a car for your birthday.” Grown-ups were addressed as Mister and Missus, not by first names. We shook hands and looked in eyes. We had to earn our pocket money by doing chores around the house. We didn’t have a housekeeper; together WE were the housekeeper. My brother and I can still recall hours spent sweeping or cleaning out the garage. We made our own beds and keep track of our belongings.
It was summer and, one day, my mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed---and there it was in the window. White, shiny, plastic and decorated with daisies, the basket seemed so appealing and I knew I had to have it.
“Mom, please can I please, please get it ” I’ll do extra chores for as long as you say. I’ll do anything, but I need that basket. I love that basket. Please, Mom. Please ”
“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was the coolest thing ever, “If you save up, you could buy this yourself.”
“By the time I make enough it’ll be gone!”
“Maybe Roger here could hold it for you.” she smiled at Roger, the bike guy.
“For that long He can’t hold it for that long, Mom. Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please ”

Paragraph 1:
“There might be another choice,” she said. My mother bought the beautiful bike basket and put it safely out of reach in some hiding place I couldn’t find. Each week I eagerly counted my pocket money earned by extra chores here and there (washing the car, helping my mother make dinner, delivering milk around the neighborhood). And then, weeks later— maybe, l counted, recounted and jumped for joy. Oh, happy day! I made it! L finally had the exact amount we’d agreed upon.
Paragraph 2:
Days later, the unthinkable happened. A neighborhood girl I’d played with millions of times appeared with the extra same basket fixed to her shiny, new bike that already had all the bells and whistles. I rode my bike fast home to tell my mother about this disaster, this horrible turn of events. And then came the life lesson I’ve carried with me all along: “Honey, your basket is extra-special,” Mom said, gently wiping away my hot tears, “Your basket is special because you paid for it yourself.”

When I was eleven years old, I had a big accident. I get scared even now when I think about that time. I went skating near my house. There were many people, and I saw some of them falling on the ice.
It was my first time to go ice skating, so I was nervous. I was wondering how to skate.
I went with a friend who was very skillful. He spent some time teaching me how to skate, but I didn’t learn much. He left me and skated all around. As soon as he left, I fell down. I envied the other people because they could skate well.
I was bored because I kept falling so I took off my skates and just walked around on the ice in my shoes. It was cold and my hands were frozen.
Suddenly, I stepped on something that was not hard. What was it It was a weak place in the ice. When I stepped there, I sank under the ice. I thought that I was going to die, but I did my best to grab something to get out from under the ice. I tried to grab the edge of the ice, but it was very difficult for an eleven-year-old.
It seemed like a very long time, like a year. Then, fortunately, someone helped me. He grabbed my arms and pulled me up. So, I lived and I’m still alive today.
I thanked him. At that time, my friend came back. I was annoyed at him because he was supposed to take care of me, but he didn’t. He was embarrassed. When I took a taxi home, the taxi driver was surprised and asked what had happened. I didn’t want to say anything because I was tired and scared. Even now, whenever I think about that time, I feel uncomfortable. I don’t want to go skating again even now.

Passage 6 偷书
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When I was ten years old, I lived with my family in a small house in rural South Jersey. I often accompanied my mother to the A&P to buy groceries. Without a car, we walked, and I would help her carry the bags.
My mother had to shop very carefully, as she was a waitress, and her salary barely sustained(勉强维持) us. One day, while she was weighing prices, a promotional display for the World Book Encyclopedia(百科全书) caught my eyes. The volumes were beautifully cream colored. VolumeⅠ was ninety nine cents with a ten dollar purchase.
All I could think of while shopping was the book. I stood at the register(收银台) with my mother, holding my breath as the cashier rang up the items. It came to over eleven dollars. My mother produced a five, some singles, and a handful of change. As she was counting out the money, I somehow found the courage to ask for the encyclopedia. “Could we get one?” I said, showing her the display. “It’s only ninety nine cents.”
I did not understand my mother’s increasing anxiety;__she did not have enough change and had to sacrifice a large can of peas to pay the amount, “Not now, Patricia,” she said sternly. “Today is not a good day.” I packed the groceries and followed her home, upset.
The next Saturday, my mother gave me a dollar and sent me to the A&P alone. Two quarts of milk and a loaf of bread — that’s what a dollar in 1957. I went straight to the World Book display. There was only one first volume left, which I placed in my cart(购物车). I didn’t need a cart, but took one so I could read as I went up and down the aisles. A lot of time went by and I knew I had to leave, but I couldn’t bear to part with the book. With no detective in sight, I, impulsively(冲动地), put it inside my shirt and zipped up my jacket. I was a tall, skinny kid, and I am certain the shape of the book was obvious.

My heart beating rapidly, I headed for the register. I paid the dollar for the three items and was about to leave when I felt a heavy tap on my shoulder. It was a big detective. “You stole something. You will be searched,” he announced. Horrified, I slid the book out from inside the shirt and handed it over. “An encyclopedia?” he asked, somewhat surprised. “Yes,” I whispered, trembling. “Why didn’t you ask your parents to purchase it?” “I did, but they didn’t have the money.” With a sigh, he made me promise to tell my parents about my wrongdoing and then let me leave.
Paragraph 2:
Back home, I told my mother what I had promised the detective. Unexpectedly, she didn’t explode as usual. She fell silent, looking extremely anxious. Consumed with guilt, I gathered my courage, apologized and promised that it would never ever happen again. “All will be OK!” said my mother, wrapping me in her arms. Then she told me that she would go to the A&P to tell the detective I had admitted and that I should play outside. Hours later, when I was back home, I noticed a bag with my name on it. I opened it and packed inside was the World Book Encyclopedia, VolumeⅠ.
Passage 7 捡到金色的券
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The bell rang, announcing the end of the vivid art class Karson loved most. He was delighted that he had created a very satisfying work. So he walked to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the carpet in front of the classroom bookcase, was a golden ticket! Karson picked it up. His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank. He couldn't believe his luck!
The boys and girls in Karson's class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! Karson looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Evans was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning.
Karson decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he'd already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would most probably be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister's birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn't his heartbeat. It’s finders keepers, right He wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn't earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need this extra ticket for his great plan!

Karson stared at the blank name line for a moment. He knew his plan wouldn’t be so great if he won with a ticket that didn’t belong to him. So he walked up to his teacher. “Miss Evans, I happened to find this ticket on the floor near the bookcase. I think the one who lost it will look for it. And these are mine,” he said, dropping his six tickets into the box. When he turned around to leave, the teacher stopped him.
Paragraph 2:
“Karson, I'd like you to have another ticket!” Miss Evans said. Karson was amazed and wondered why. Miss Evans smiled and signed to the class to quiet down, “Karson handed in the golden ticket he had just found. I think he is honest and deserves another one!” The class burst into loud applause. Karson happily went back to his seat, eagerly expecting the ticket drawing. He still wanted his name to be picked, but he would feel OK even if it was n't. After all, making the right choice did make him feel great!
Passage 8 车祸后
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When tragedy struck his little girl during the Depression(大萧条), this father did the only thing he could.
The tragedy happened in the year 1933. I was only 6 years old when I was rushed to the hospital with two crushed feet. My parents were told I might never walk again.
The accident happened when I was sitting in front of our house in Lowell, Massachusetts. I was playing in a puddle(水坑) after a rainstorm and suddenly felt a huge weight on my feet. When I looked up, there was a car tire on them. I cried out, but the motor was running and no one could hear me over the engine.
The driver had run across the street for a newspaper. When he got back to his car, he drove away—never knowing he had parked on my feet.
Just about then, our neighbor’s son came home and saw me bent over my feet in pain. He immediately carried me home, and I remember thinking how tall and strong he was.
An ambulance came, and I remained in the hospital for 3 weeks while my feet were “repaired”. When I returned home, I could hardly walk.
I sat in our bay window and watched the children play on the street and longed to join them…but I couldn’t. I felt so left out despite my parents’ company.
My parents were told that if I was ever to walk again, I’d need treatment, which in those days meant riding a tricycle(三轮车)to strengthen the muscle and eventually get my feet back into condition for walking.
Our family couldn’t afford such an extravagance(奢侈品). Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove.
Dad couldn’t afford the bus fare and on cold winter days he walked 7 miles every day in his only winter coat to get to work. No, there was no money for a tricycle. I would be a cripple(瘸子)all my life.

My name is John and I must share with you an event which took place on Flight 1553 out of DCA. My wife and I were traveling to Miami to celebrate an achievement for her and as you can imagine, we were looking forward to fun, sun and laughter.
We boarded the aircraft, without a care in the world. It was cold in Washington and we were ready for Florida. Shortly after taking my seat, I began to feel sick. I knew something wasn't right but just couldn't find out what was happening. Being a doctor and a stubborn man, I resisted efforts by my wife to call for assistance. As the aircraft began its departure roll, I lost consciousness for a short amount of time. As I came around, I quickly realized a few things. Firstly, something very bad had happened to me. Secondly, the aircraft was too heavy with the fuel to go back home. Thirdly, my loss of consciousness had been so deep that I found myself out of control. So not only did I have a medical issue to deal with, but I also had to figure out how to deal with an embarrassing experience.
My wife gathered the crew as soon as it was safe to move about and I made my way to the washroom to attempt to clean up. I did my best and the flight crew members were so supportive, checking on me often and reassuring me that there was nothing to be embarrassed about. It was their sympathy and support that helped me so much. During the flight they kept watching over me and I suddenly had a small group of nurse, bringing blankets, food, drinks and caring and smile. I was thankful to them.

A few years ago, I worked in an international company that sold computer devices. I had to travel a lot over the country as a part of my work. I remember that I was at a stage of my life where I only cared about how to make more money.
On one of my trips, I came to the airport to take a bus to downtown, as usual. It was the same routine:get into the city, take the bus to the hotel, visit the customer, work late, take the bus back to the airport and fly back…That day, for some reasons, I decided to take the stairs down to a different exit, where I came across a beautiful garden I had never seen before. I waited there, enjoying the scenery. Finally, the bus came.
Usually I always took the seat behind the driver. That day I sat down somewhere in the middle. A boy was seated next to me, carrying a lot of suitcases. Suddenly, he turned to me and gave me one of the most sincere smiles I had ever seen from a stranger. Warmly, he said, "hi, the perfect day in the perfect place, huh?"
I remember thinking to myself this must be one of those typical people who is young and naive and just thinks everything is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride? But out of politeness, I replied, "Perfect! Did your parents pay for you to have some vacations on the beach " "No, I'm not here for vacation, and I don't have parents," He shook his head, "I'm here because I want to achieve my biggest dream. I'm on the way to the army school where my grandfather studied a long time ago."
