It was the first day of our new grade. Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking and turned to look. In came our teacher Ms. Sullivan, followed by an ordinary-looking boy,
“This boy’s name is Rafael.” Ms. Sullivan announced. “He’s a transfer student（转校生), and he’s going to be in our class starting from today. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly.”
The class clapped. But I didn't want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.
“Oh, I forgot to mention one thing.” Ms. Sullivan spoke up. “Rafael actually has hearing problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Rafael insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write it on a piece of paper.”
This single speech sent the whole class up into an uproar (嘈杂). Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.
Ms. Sullivan calmed everyone down. “I’d like someone to personally help him out throughout the day. Do I have any volunteers ”
“How can a disabled person be intelligent ” I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the classroom.
It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms. Sullivan's.
“How about you, James ” She asked me. “Is it okay for you to take care of Rafael just for today ”
It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed and nodded slightly. Ms. Sullivan gestured for Rafael to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.

Totally exhausted, I trudged the six blocks home late that June afternoon. As a third year university student working my way through school, I had never before met anyone like Rose.
Fighting back tears, I wrestled with my dilemma alone in my room. "What shall I do " The answer caught me completely by surprise. I needed to love Rose.
Working with Rose the next morning, I ignored the hurtful remarks thrown in my direction and did things Rose’s way as much as possible. As I worked, I silently began to surround Rose with a warm blanket of love.
Over the next few days, an amazing thing began to happen. My focus shifted from what she was doing to me and I started seeing Rose as the hurting person she was. Then her icy tension began to melt away.
Throughout the rest of the summer, we had numerous opportunities to work together. Each time, she seemed truly happy to see me. Her bitterness gave way as she started opening up. As I worked with this lonely woman, I listened to her, something no one else had done. I learned that she was burdened by elderly parents who needed her care and her own health problems.
The days slipped by quickly as I finished the last several weeks of my summer job. I soon would be returning as a full-time university student and say goodbye to Rose.

Then she saw a taxi approaching but when she tried to stop it, the taxi driver sped by without even taking a glance at her. Alice was wondering what she could do.
It was then that a car stopped near her and a man waved to her. The driver asked her where she was going and after Alice told him that she was going to the bank at Nariman Point, the man said, "Oh, my office is in the nearby building. Can I give you a lift " Alice hesitated for a moment and got into the car. They exchanged names and began to talk for a while. Then the driver switched on the radio and was absorbed in the song. Alice looked out of the window and imagined her first day at work, worrying whether she was capable of the new job, and if she could get along well with her colleagues. After about ten minutes, Alice realized they were not on the familiar route to her office.

The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and hole-digger and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you." The older brother had to go to the town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get everything ready and then he left.
The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing and nailing. At sunset when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. John's eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped.

No answer. Tom moved his brush carefully along the fence and looked at the result with the eye of an artist. Ben came nearer. Tom’s mouth watered for the apple, but he kept on working.

My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

Tim noticed the resumes(简历) of other candidates and was surprised to see that some of them held a Master’s Degree or even a Doctor’s Degree. But Tim was only a Bachelor，and barely met the lowest requirement of the diploma. Tim felt a bit frustrated because he had no advantage over other candidates who were excellent students.
All the candidates entered the exam hall after handing up their resumes. Tim scanned through the pages of the test paper and found out that the questions were very difficult for him. Tim tried to calm down and focus on the questions themselves instead of their difficulty level. He started with the easiest ones and moved on to the more difficult ones slowly.
There were two invigilators(监考人) in the hall，one of them was tall and thin，while the other invigilator was of the opposite: he was short and fat. They seemed to be quite confident about the honesty of the candidates and were absent minded. After about 10 minutes，one of the invigilators left to answer a phone call. The other invigilator soon went out too.
The atmosphere in the exam hall changed after the invigilators had left. Some of the candidates took out notes and books，some of them brought tablets to search for answers，and some even called others for help. Tim looked back，and he saw the candidate sitting behind him cheating too. The man winked to Tim，as if telling him to cheat in the test because everyone was doing so. Tim shook his head and continued doing the difficult problems at a slow pace.
In about half an hour，the invigilators returned to the exam hall. Tim still had one question left blank at the end of the test. He was almost sure that he was not going to be accepted.

In a second, I made a decision that was to take me on an unforgettable journey.
“No, sweetie. I'm ready to go. Besides, I miss your dad.” I hugged my daughter, grasped my cane(拐杖),and headed for the airport. It was 11:00 P.M., September 10, 2001.
In the early morning hours, the plane arrived at Sea-Tac airport. An attendant was waiting for me with a wheelchair and helped me to the gate for my connecting flight. Five hip operations have left me with one leg two inches shorter than the other. Wheelchairs and canes are often parts of my life.
As I waited to board the plane, an announcement came on the public address system: “All planes are grounded. Everyone report to baggage claim. The airport will be closing.”
A shock wave went through me. What was happening How would I handle my luggage Where could I go
Across the aisle(过道), a woman with a cellphone to her ear tells anyone listening that a plane has flown into one of the World Trade Center towers. With growing confusion and fear, I started to gather my things. I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned to look into the worried face of a young Asian woman.
In broken English she asked, “Please, could you explain what's happening to me ”
My mind was spinning. I thought, “Help you! I don't even know what's going on myself. I'm 65 and use a cane. How can I help you I need help myself!” But when I started to speak, to my own surprise, I said patiently, “I don’t know what’s happening, but why not come with me and we'll figure it out together. My name is Marty.”
She smiled thankfully, “I'm Teresa Lin from Shanghai, China. Thank you so much.”
It took us the next eight hours to locate our luggage and find a place to stay. Because Teresa's flight was not a connecting flight, she apparently didn't qualify for a room voucher. Teresa looked at the agent with disbelief and worry. Without thinking, I blurted out, “She's traveling with me; she can stay in my room.”
