Some people think that it would be not difficult to do this job: after all, you just have to like ice cream, right No – there’s more than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very necessary to someone wanting a career in this “cool” field.
In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and tests 60 ice-cream samples. He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12F. Harrison explains, “You get more flavour from warmer ice-cream, which is why some kids like to stir it, creating ice-cream soup.”
While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one on its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, “Does the product have the colour expected from that flavour ” Next it’s time to taste!
Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavours, and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy - working at one cool job.

Every year, wildfires destroy millions of hectares of forest land. Homes are damaged, and thousands of people die. Smokejumpers help to stop this.
Smokejumpers are a special type of firefighter. They jump from planes or are lowered by helicopters into areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot, such as the middle of a mountain forest. They race to put out fires as fast as they can.
At a fire site, smokejumpers first examine the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main goal is to stop a fire from spreading or to slow its progress until full, ground-based firefighters arrive. Using basic equipment such as shovels and axes, smokejumpers clear land of burnable material, like dry grass and dead trees. They carry water with them, too, but only a limited amount.
Although the majority of smokejumpers are men, more women are joining now. The most important factors are height and weight. Smokejumpers employed in the United States, for example, must be between 54 and 91 kilograms so they don’t get blown away by the strong winds or get hurt when they land. Smokejumpers must be also capable of surviving in the wildness. In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and can even make simple furniture from trees.
The work is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires, and live in the forest. As a 28-year-old Russian smokejumper Alexi Tishin says, “This is the best job for tough guys.”
15.The reading is mainly about ________.
A.the life of a Russian smokejumper B.who smokejumpers are and what they do
C.why people become smokejumpers D.how to become a professional smokejumper
16.When smokejumpers reach a fire site, the first thing they do is ________.
A.looking for water B.clearing the land
C.studying the land D.connecting ground-based firefighters
17.If you want to be a smokejumper, you must be ________.
A.male B.a university graduate
C.within a certain weight range D.know how to cook food in the forest
18.Which of the following is NOT true for smokejumpers
A.They must learn to fly a plane or helicopter.
B.They must learn to survive in the wildness.
C.They put out fires in areas that are hard to reach.
D.They must be brave enough to jump from high places.
19.In Alexi Tishin’s opinion, smokejumpers do the job ________.
A.for the money B.for the excitement
C.to help their country D.to save the trees and animals
