Yellow became the color of school buses in the USA in 1939. Dr. Frank got the good idea. He said it was easy for people to see yellow buses and the black letters on them in early morning or late afternoon. That would make children safer.
There are not many school buses in Britain, and they are not yellow. They have trackers(追踪器)on them. The trackers let parents know where the school bus is and whether their kids are on the bus.

Four hundred million dollars (about 2.6 billion yuan). That’s the value of the goods that flow through the Suez Canal (苏伊士运河)every hour, according to CNBC.The canal is one of the most important parts of the global shipping network that all of us depend on. However, it is also fragile (脆弱的).
The ship Ever Given got stuck in the canal on March 23 due to high winds, according to the ship’s technical manager Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement. It was stuck there for six days until finally being freed on March 29. But during that short time, the ship blocked the canal, leaving at least 422 ships unable to pass. This incident (事故)showed us just how big of a role the canal plays in global trade.
The canal, which first opened in 1869, connects the Mediterranean (地中海)and Red seas. It creates a shorter route between Europe and the Indian and western Pacific oceans. By using the canal, shipping companies can move goods between Europe and Asia without having to navigate (航行)around Africa reducing sea voyage distances by about 7,000 km, according to Velta, a freight(货运)management company. This allows us to move goods faster and cheaper than shipping by air.
All kinds of goods get shipped through the canal every day. About seven percent of the world’s oil is carried through the canal, as well as 30 percent of the world’s total shipping container freight (集装箱货运). Electronics, furniture, clothing, and auto parts (汽车配件)are just a few of the goods that the canal handles. Even basic daily goods like toilet paper and coffee pass through the canal, according to USA Today. If the canal is blocked for a long time, there might be shortages of these goods, which could cause their prices to go up.

If you want to travel from Xi’an to Chengdu by train, it will take about 16 hours. But starting this month, the new Xi’an-Chengdu high-speed railway will shorten this travel time to three hours.
The 643-kilometer line is China’s first high-speed railway to run through the Qinling Mountains, which form a natural boundary (分界线) between China’s north and south. With a speed of 250 km perhour, it’s also the first mountain-heavy train line to provide a 4G network. Along the way, the train passes through two areas for rare (稀有) wild animals-one for pandas and the other for crested ibises (朱鹮).
To reduce the railway’s influence on the animals, workers and experts have designed and built the railway to be environmentally friendly. There were 345 wild pandas living in the Qinling Mountains. China currently has 1,864 wild pandas in total, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
To avoid disturbing the pandas, the railway was designed to run through tunnels (隧道)within the are Protective shields (防护屏) are placed near the entrance of each tunnel to stop animals from going in.
To protect the thousands of crested ibises that fly near one part of the railway, protective nets have been set up to make sure the birds will not fly into a train. The nets are about 32km long and 4 meters high. Experts tested different shapes and materials for building the nets before making their final choice.

If you live in Shanghai, Beijing or many other cities, you may see many orange bicycles on the streets these days.
These bikes are owned by a company called Mobike. You can order a bike through an app on your phone. When you find a bike, you just scan a QR code (扫描二维码) on the bike so that you can use it. You don’t need to return the bike to a station-you can park it anywhere.
China was known as “the kingdom of bicycles” about 30 years ago. But more people choose to drive cars and take the subway these days. Bike rental (租赁的) services like Mobike are bringing bikes back. “Back then, I got the feeling that Chinese people were trying to be modern and push away the past. So they did not want to be linked with bicycles,” said Ines Brunn, a German woman who runs a bike store in Beijing. “I do believe changes in people’s tastes will shape new thinking about bikes.”
Online rental services are making biking more convenient, but it’s still not easy to ride bikes in Chinese cities. Cars often take up bicycle lanes (道路). Bikers have to ride next to cars in car lanes, which can be very dangerous.

Parking has been a problem for drivers for a long time in most cities in China. The Transportation Department is mapping out a new plan for the city’s parking system. There are about 100 thousand cars on the road in a medium-sized city but only enough parking space to provide room for 15 percent of these vehicles. It is no wonder that local drivers get so worried trying to find a place to park.
The number of the private car owners is becoming larger and larger. A medium-sized city sometimes sends out about 1, 000 private car licenses in a month. Industry experts say this suggests that people have a strong, active interest in buying cars.
By the year 2016, the number of private cars in China reached about 150 million. If one parking lot is for one car, then a lot of parking space should be built for these vehicles. The center of most cities is short of parking space. However, experts point out that simply building more parking lots in these areas is not practical and doesn’t solve the problem.
The idea of a “Park &Ride” system has been suggested. This means that underground train and city train should be developed quickly. Drivers can leave their vehicles in car parks nearby subway and bus stations and then they can ride public transport to go to the city center. Based on this idea, the city will cut down the number of parking lots in the city center and charge higher parking fees. But it will build more parking areas near main subway and bus stops.

Have you ever seen a car without a driver It sounds crazy, but these computer —driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near panies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and they just need to see if they value for money, work out insurance(保险)issues, and run final tests to check if they can run alongside human driven cars on the road.
So how do they work The cars have sensors(应器)all around which can find other cars and objects in the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking, so the cars know how far it is from the outside of the road or other parked cars. Road signs are read by by cameras, and satellite navigation systems are used, so the cars know how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up, stop, and turn.
Sound like your idea of heaven(天堂) Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while “driving” would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn’t have to worry about remembering directions to where you are going. In addition, computers would be better drivers than humans —they would obey the speed limit and have quicker action times when in dangerous situations. However, there are many disadvantages of driverless puters would have difficulties making ethical(道德的)decisions: if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or change the direction suddenly and potentially kill the car’s passengers Moreover, I personally find driving fun —I’d miss driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made —should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times
Although being driven around by a machine would perhaps mean that no one needs a driving license, and saving money for everyone, many people would be put out of a job when driverless cars appear. Bus, taxi and train drivers as well as driving instructors would be made unnecessary. I’m not certain if I’d want a driverless car —but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and common on our roads.
40.When using a driverless car, you need only ________.
A.read the road signs carefully B.check the cameras
C.put the address into the computer D.remember the directions
41.What can we know from the passage
A.The writer is eager to have a driverless car.
B.Driverless cars will cause more accidents.
C.Driverless cars can know where to go and stop and make ethical decisions.
D.More things should be thought about before driverless cars go on roads.
42.The underlined word “potentially” in Paragraph 3 means _________
A.probably. B.successfully. C.especially. D.naturally.
43.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.Driverless cars: Are you ready for them B.Driverless cars: Are they your favorite
