When I was nine years old my greatest desire in life was to own a pogo stick(弹簧单高跷).I had recently learned to walk on a pair of sticks my dad had made for me, and I thought that if I had a pogo stick surely I would be proud of my unbelievable skills.
When Christmas season rolled around again, I told my mother that he only thing I wanted was a pogo stick.My mother told me they were too expensive and that we simply couldn't afford one.On a Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks before Christmas, my mom and dad told me we needed to go to Sears to pay our credit bill.While my mother and I were at the counter paying the bill, my dad said, “I'll be right back.I need to see something in the tool department."After the bill was taken care of, my mother and I went ahead and got in the truck.Soon my dad came walking out with a long box.I remember wondering at that very moment if it was a pogo stick in that box.
When we arrived back at home, my dad put the box in the barn(谷仓).While my parents were busy with their things, I walked out to the barn and found the box.I was so excited and I knew that as soon as I opened that magical box my bright shiny pogo stick would appear.
No such luck! Inside the box was a silly old broom.And so Christmas morning was both great and disappointing. I got some nice gifts but I didn't get the present that I really wanted.

I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. Norwood, a junior at St. Petersburg’S Lakewood High School, participated in the school’s Athletic Lifestyle Management Academy. The program prepares students for various careers in health science with two components. The first one is a hands-on skills component where the students have to demonstrate that they are expert in the skills of adult, child and infant CPR （心 肺复苏术），how to help somebody who's choking, as well as how to use an AED （自动体外除 颤仪）.And the other is a written test component, showing that they master that knowledge. Norwood and Simmons shared a long friendship. They had been friends sincethe seventh grade and since then they had built an unbreakable bond. The following day after school, the 16- year-old girl Norwood was driving three friends home in St. Petersburg, Florida, when another driver slammed into her from her left and sent her car rushing forward in an uncontrollable way.
“We crashed in someone's yard and I hit the tree," Norwood said. The impactjammed shut the driver's side door, so Norwood climbed out of the front window. Two of her friends managed to get out of the car unharmed, but the collision caused her 16-year-old friend Simmons to hit her head on the backseat window.
When Norwood turned around, she didn't see Simmons running with them so she had to run back to the car as fast as she could. Simmons was just sitting there unresponsive. Apparently, she passed out owing to the huge impact force. The unexpected crash left the girls in panic. A lot of people started to gather around to see what was happening. The crowd watched in astonishment, open-mouthed. Someone advised to make an emergency call immediately.

Taylor’s swift action helped her teammates calm down. One girl called 911. Two more ran to get the school nurse, who brought a defibrillator, an electronic devices(器械) that can shock the heart back into work. Luck stayed with them: Paris’ heartbeat returned.
“I know I was really lucky,” Paris say now. “Most people don’t survive this. My team saved my life”
Experts say Paris is right: For a sudden heart failure, the single best chance for survival is having someone nearby step in and do CPR quickly.

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Emily White’s hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium(大礼堂 ). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.
