Diaoyu islands, covering an area of 170,000 square kilometers, is located in the northeast of Taiwan and east of China mainland. They are rich in many natural resources, oil and fishing in particular. Ever since the ancient times, Diaoyu islands have been included in the territory of China, with the earliest record dating back to 1403, the early period of the Ming Dynasty. However, Diaoyu islands, which belong to Yilan county, Taiwan, China, are now under Japan’s control. As for this, Chinese government and unofficial organizations have carried out campaigns of protecting sovereignty over Diaoyu islands since 1970s.
