France’s Louvre Museum reopened on Monday after closing in March due to the coronavirus. But things are far from business as usual.
The world’s most visited museum has carried out new measures, including a mask requirement and an online-only reservation system to protect art lovers from the virus.
One unintended consequence of these restrictions has been an experience devoid (缺乏的) of the usual crowds of tourists, which normally reach up to 50,000 people a day.
Freddie Keen, visiting from London with some friends, told NPR it was easy to take his time seeing some of the Louvre’s top attractions. “It was definitely a much more comfortable experience seeing the Mona Lisa without having any peer pressure from hundreds of people staring at you and waiting for you to move on,” Keen said.
Floor markers in the hall, where the Mona Lisa is held, have been put in place to ensure guests keep a physical distance of at least 3 feet. Visitors must also follow a one-way path through the building. A third of the museum is still closed to the public.
International tourists made up around 70% of the 9.6 million visitors in 2019. Museum Director Jean-Luc Martinez said he was hoping to attract more French tourists this summer because of the current travel restrictions.
“We are going to be at best 20% to 30% down on last summer,” Martinez told Agence France-Presse, adding that the museum expects between 4,000 and 10,000 visitors a day.
During the four-month shutdown, the famous art destination lost an equivalent (等价物) of $45 million in ticket sales this year. However, France’s tourism industry could soon get a much-needed boost. Last week, the European Union lifted travel restrictions on visitors from more than a dozen countries considered low risk for spreading the coronavirus. Because of the rising level of virus infections among Americans, the United States was not included on the list.
21. What visitors can experience with new measures taken in Louvre Museum
A. Wearing masks offered by the museum.
B. Appreciating works of art with experts.
C. Visiting the museum with fewer tourists.
D. Enjoying tour-guide service free of charge.
22. How does Louvre Museum keep visitors at a safe distance while visiting
A. By persuading them to wear masks.
B. By closing some districts to the public.
C. By accepting online-only reservation.
D. By sticking markers onto the floor.
23. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Restrictions on tourism will remain strict.
B. Louvre Museum suffered the greatest loss.
C. France’s tourism could gradually improve.
D. Americans are resistant to the coronavirus.
B
One of the biggest topics of the last decade, sustainability has become the beacon (灯塔) of hope to protect the planet. From supermarkets taking action on plastic packaging to the zero waste movement that can be practised from your kitchen, changes made by individuals and organizations across the globe has had an impact on the way we think, shop and live.
So what does that mean for the world of technology You’d be forgiven for thinking that the words “sustainable” and “tech” don’t usually go hand in hand. E-waste is, after all, one of the planet’s biggest contributing waste streams. Not only that, but the materials that go into tech products are also part of the problem.
But with a challenge comes an opportunity, and there’s already some brilliant progress happening — great news for those of us wanting to be more sustainable with our tech. Firstly, renewed is having its moment. While consumers would previously turn their noses up at the idea of a second-hand device, there’s been a huge surge in demand for renewed tech. The second major step in tackling the problem of e-waste is a change in attitudes from owning a product to subscribing for one. A subscription for a smartphone might sound like a foreign concept, but it’s already gaining momentum. At the forefront of this movement is London-based tech startup Raylo, a pending B Corp which offers a subscription service for the latest iPhone. As customers aren’t paying to own the phone at the end of their contract, the monthly price is significantly lower than average.
Studies show that extending a phone’s lifespan from one to four years can decrease its environmental impact by about 40%. So the next time it comes to refreshing your device — whether a smartphone, laptop, tablet or something else — consider the more environmentally-friendly options that are at your fingertips.
24. What’s the purpose of paragraph 1
A. To change the way we think, shop, and live.
B. To introduce the topic of sustainability in tech.
C. To tell us what people have done to protect the planet.
D. To call on people to do something for the environment.
25. Which of the following best explains “turn their noses up at” underlined in paragraph 3
A. Oppose.
B. Present.
C. Explain.
D. Accept.
26. How can we become sustainable in technology according to Raylo
A. By upgrading the old one.
B. By paying monthly for a smartphone.
C. By spending less money on a smartphone.
D. By replacing the old one with the latest one.
C
These days, many gyms require clients to wear masks or face coverings. The good news: research suggests they don’t actually hold up your performance.
Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan gathered a group of 7 men and 7 women, ranging from slightly inactive to excellent cyclists and tested the effects of wearing a three-layer cloth face mask, a surgical mask, and no mask on their exercise performance.
The study participants started with a brief warm-up on a fixed bike, then took a progressive intensity exercise test, during which it was vital for them to keep the same pedal rate while the resistance was continually increased until exhaustion (疲惫不堪). Something like the heart rate was recorded every 30 seconds.
The results suggested that wearing a mask had no effect on performance or muscle oxygen levels. Since there was no difference in time to exhaustion between conditions, the highest power reached at the end of each test was similar in mask and no-mask conditions for all participants, Professor Chilibeck explained. Researchers also did not see any effects of the masks during exercise on blood oxygen levels, which wouldn’t decrease if breathing was not affected.
And while droplet (飞沫) spread was not measured, all masks used were tested in a previous study in which they were shown to effectively minimize droplet spread, according to Chilibeck. Though the participants represented a wide range of fitness levels, it’s important to note that these tests were conducted on a very small sample size, and more research is needed on larger populations to draw sweeping conclusions about the general population.
27. How did the researchers draw the conclusion
A. By doing medical tests.
B. By making brief analysis.
C. By observing normal cyclists.
D. By conducting an experiment.
28. What will happen if masks block your performance
A. Your heart rate may keep stable.
B. You might produce less droplet.
C. Your blood oxygen levels will drop.
D. You will feel more tired than before.
29. What is the author’s attitude to the study
A. Doubtful.
B. Favorable.
C. Disapproving.
D. Objective.
30. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Why Should We Train with Masks
B. Do Masks Affect Our Performance
C. Can We Train While Wearing Masks
D. Why Don’t Masks Worsen Our Performance
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
“I’m sorry” are two very important words that play a big part in daily life. You might apologize while squeezing through a crowd or using the last of the printer paper at work. It’s easy to say “I’m sorry”, but true apologies are a different story. 31 Or you may wonder how to properly demand an apology if the other person is at fault With the following tips, you’ll find these are not hard.
Apologize sincerely. A genuine apology can help repair your relationship and even your reputation — you’re showing that you can be trusted to do what’s right. But your relationship will remain tense if your apology seems casual. 32
Apply specific principles. A meaningful apology comes down to the three R’s — regret, responsibility and remedy (补救办法). Firstly, communicate your regret. Show the other person you have recognized your error and can relate to his/her pain. Then take complete responsibility.
33 Lastly, show that you’re working to improve the situation. Offer to make up for the harm you caused or promise you wouldn’t repeat it again.
34 If you’re the offended (冒犯) party, describe what’s changed in the relationship and your true feeling. For example, you could say, “Although there’s a disagreement between you and me, I want us to be friends again. But I’ve been hurt, and I’d like an apology. I need you to acknowledge what you’ve done.”
Don’t expect immediate forgiveness. Most people hope for immediate forgiveness while apologizing, but that may mean you don’t respect the others’ emotions and all you care about is yourself. 35 After all, they were hurt and it would take them a while to recover.
A. Ask for an apology if necessary.
B. Don’t make excuses or blame the victim.
C. Say sorry first if both parties are at fault.
D. So you have to be truly willing to apologize.
E. You should make sure your words are acceptable.
F. So give them some time to come out of the pain after your apology.
G. You may have trouble finding the right way to send meaningful apologies.

The sun was shining in Utrecht, the Netherlands, when my friend Rini and I set off for England by car. We love classic cars and were going on a tour of used car dealerships in search of an old Jaguar. Aged 19 and 20, we were full of the spirit of adventure.
It was so mild when we arrived in Kent that occasionally we would stop to sunbathe. We had no luck in finding a Jaguar in the southeast so we decided to head farther north. We didn’t check the forecast on our way to Cumbria.
As we drove, the weather got colder and wilder. Snow was falling and wind was blowing as we reached the Yorkshire Dales. We struggled on until the storm became so heavy that we couldn’t see where we were going; the car barely moved. With no chance of going anywhere, we waited for the storm to pass. It was bitterly cold. Our summer sleeping bags offered little protection, nor did our thin jackets. The cold slowed our senses, until it was all we felt.
The next morning, the car was buried in snow. Everything was dark. Panic set in. Staying in the car would kill us. We managed to get out, trying to find a farm we’d passed, but it was hopeless. The storm changed everything. The sky and the road were indistinguishable. Rini was fading. I kept him going, with whatever worked. Finally, we stopped at a barn (谷仓). I felt ready to die. At that moment, I heard what sounded like a dog bark. Then a figure came towards us. “Are you both crazy Out for a walk in this weather ” the man shouted.
The man, Clifford Harker, told us he owned the farm we had passed. He was out with his dog, leading his sheep to safety. He told us he lived a 10-minute walk away, so we followed, battling against the storm. Ten minutes passed, and there was nothing in sight. “How much longer ” we begged. “Ten more minutes,” he replied.

参考范文:
With the aim of helping us students release the pressure of study and heightening our patriotic awareness, our school has decided to organize a special hiking themed with “Follow the Red Footprint” this Saturday.
As we all know, hiking can be a little tiring, so we should wear comfortable clothes and shoes. In addition, during the hiking, please follow our teachers’ orders to make sure of our own safety. Last but not least, bring a notebook to set down what we will see in case of the writing task.
Following the red footprint by hiking will surely be an unforgettable and educational experience. Don’t hesitate to participate, and we’ll have a wonderful time together!
第二节 读后续写
参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
After what seemed like a lifetime, we saw lights in the distance. We walked into the farmhouse, much to the surprise of Clifford’s wife. We were shaking and numb with cold, but alive. She ran a bath for us, brought us her husband’s clothes, and on her doctor’s advice, made our bowls full of lukewarm food. It was the first thing we ate in almost two days and it tasted glorious. The storm left the roads blocked, so we had to stay for several days. The Harkers were so welcoming — even we were two strangers.
Paragraph 2:
We went back to visit Clifford’s family on New Year’s Day, loaded with presents. They were so pleased and surprised to see us. We spent several days on the farm, helping Clifford tend his sheep and eating more delicious food cooked by his wife. Our car had been dug out by the local garage. We told the owner we’d come to England to find an old Jaguar. By coincidence, he had one to sell which was the exact model we looked for. It was the best holiday we had, for our survival, the wonderful family we met and our dream come true.

W: Of course. Don’t forget to ride on the left.
Text 2
W: You look tired and sleepy. Do you have trouble falling asleep
M: No, I had to finish the paper for history class from 9:00 last night to 2:00 in the morning, because I didn’t remember it until I finished watching TV.

W: I’m disappointed that Everest did not accept our offer.

M: Well, remember that the Johnsons are coming over for dinner. You know how much I like your cooking, dear, but maybe you shouldn’t pick tonight of all nights to experiment.
Text 5
W: The bus isn’t supposed to arrive at this stop for another 30 minutes. I guess we’ll just have to wait until it comes.

Text 6
W: Hello, Louis Catering. What can I do for you

W: OK. How many people do you expect to take part in the party And will it be an indoor one or outdoor one
M: About 108 employees will be there. In addition, 12 managing staff will also be present. And we’ll hold it indoors in one of our large conference rooms.

M: Welcome. Jenny and I have got lots to tell you.
W: That’s right. This week Westfield Radio runs its annual competition. Last year it was to find the best dancer, and next year it will be the turn of local actors to enter. But this year we’re looking for the best singer in our city.

M: Right. Well, it’s school holidays this week, so what’s on offer
W: The sports hall will open an hour earlier than usual at 8:00 am and shut later at 10:30 pm instead of nine. The indoor football ground is always popular and has to be booked in advance.
M: But what about the swimming pool
W: Not quite such good news, I’m afraid. It will be open about a week later than planned, but good news now — there will be no charge for swimmers for the first week. It’s the same size as the old one, but it is much better equipped.
M: That’s great.
Text 10
M: I started my own company, CyberEdit, when I was a freshman. Most students have to write essays, and I aimed to provide computer editing services for them. During one summer vacation, I worked for an Internet company and in the evening, I spent another four hours working on my website. It’s not easy to develop a business. If you hope to be financially independent, you must do something while you are young and you can work long hours. For a long time, I was editing nearly ten documents a night. I spent fifty hours a week doing this. It was hard. Then I hired my first four employees, and I never edited a single document again. The next year, I turned down my summer job at a big investment bank and spent the vacation expanding CyberEdit. In December, Wired magazine contacted me and asked me to write an article about my life. After the article appeared in March, interested investors began to contact me. In June, one of them decided to invest a large sum of money in the company. So the Wired article brought me over a million dollars in funding! More than anything else, good publicity helps a new business attract investors and customers. Investors came to me, not because I was making money and employing fifty college students, but because they read about it in Wired magazine, and saw it on ABC World News Tonight. My advice to young people who consider starting a company is: Do it now! Don’t delay starting it until you’ve finished school or had some “real-world experience”.
