第二节:读后续写(满分 25 分)
“Tell him to drop something and we’ll go up to return it!” Amalia jumped up and down for the smart idea. We wrote a note and asked the vegetable vendor to place it in José Manuel's basket next to the vegetables. We impatiently waited on the corner while watching with our hearts pumping. Puzzled, he opened the note. Soon he returned with his little red ball. He had just sat down to play when suddenly the ball fell from the balcony. Amalia flew after it and got it.The time for us to do our trick came.Palms sweating, Amalia knocked loudly on the wooden door.
With a sound the door slowly opened, and there stood José Manuel's grandma wearing a frown.“This
belongs to José Manuel," Amalia showed the ball to José Manuel's grandma. Taking a deep breath and a step forward,“We also wanted to know if he could come to the beach tonight with our family.” Much to our astonishment, the grandma nodded and even invited us to come in for cookies. Late that night was special, for we had José with us to the beach as was our tradition on the Night of San Juan. Bathed in the gentle moon and surrounded by rushing wavers, I was sure good luck would come to José .

Text 10 (第 17 题为总结题)
Ten years ago, I had an idea. It came to me as I sat in my apartment, which had not been cleaned for a long while. At the time I regarded cleaning as annoying. I didn’t want to do it at all. (18) I wanted to work as a scientist. But why would I want to clean then An idea came to me after a while. House cleaning could also be seen as a science, with different elements and methods applied to do a perfect job. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that cleaning is actually an art — creating order where there is often none to be found. It was then that I came up with the name of my company, The Art of Cleaning. We started small, in just one town, cleaning private houses. (19) Later, we opened in a second town and did offices as well. These days we do whole apartment blocks, hotels and businesses. I grew to love cleaning and the methods used to achieve a clean environment. And, speaking of the environment, my company is doing its bit to protect the planet. We avoid using acids and chemicals, choosing only natural soaps to do cleaning. (20)绝密 考试结束前

Lisa walked into the chorus room with a smile on her face. The class was auditioning(试演)for parts in the holiday musical. Lisa loved to sing and this was her chance to get one of the lead roles.
Mr.Beckman passed out lyrics for the auditions. Lisa could hardly wait to sing quietly to herself. Mr.Beckman tapped his baton on the music stand at the front of the room. “I know you're all excited to audition, but before we do I have an announcement. This year will witness a very special performance by a select number of students,” Mr.Beckman said. Lisa squeezed the sheet music in her hands. Maybe it was a chance to be featured as one of the best singers.
“These individuals will be dressed in distinctive costumes and will set the stage for the rest of the show,” Mr.Beckman continued. “Brandon, Adriana, Tina, and Lisa, would you come up front please ” “Yes!” Lisa yelled, rushing to the front of the room.
Mr.Beckman removed a costume from the supply closet, “You four will be our wooden soldiers!” Lisa stared at the strange clothes. “No one is going to recognize us wearing those!” “Don't worry, Lisa. Your names will be listed in the program under Wooden Soldiers.” Mr.Beckman said.
“But even my own parents won't be able to tell which soldier is me!” “This is a very special honor,” Mr.Beckman said, “Lisa, I selected the top students in the class to open the show for us. You'll need to learn a special march and dance, but if you don't want to be a soldier, I can assign the part to someone else.” Lisa saw a few of her classmates' eyes widen at the thought of taking her place. Maybe being a soldier was a good thing since Mr.Beckman had chosen her, and she wasn't going to let him down. “Can we start practicing our march ” Lisa asked.

Clara Barton, born on December 25,1821, is widely known as one of the most honored women in American history. She lived in Washington, D.C., when the Civil War began in 1861. She heard stories of wounded and suffering soldiers. She immediately recognized that the poorly equipped soldiers needed help. Instead of waiting for others to step in, Clara collected necessary things on her own, asked the public for donations and learned how to store and distribute them to the soldiers in the battlefield.
After the Battle of Cedar Mountain in northern Virginia in 1863, Clara arrived at a field hospital at
midnight with a vehicle full of supplies. A doctor named Paul Smith at that hospital would later write, “I thought heaven had sent out an angel that night ---her assistance arrived at exactly the right time.
After four years of hard work, Clara fell ill and moved to Switzerland to recover. It was there that she first learned about a group called the Red Cross. This group worked to help people who were suffering during times of war. But the United States did not take part in then. Clara, returned home and began to establish the Red Cross in America. She worked hard, travelling to Washington for support, gave speeches and wrote articles to win the support of the public. She told people the Red Cross was not only important during times of war, but also useful in peace time. This got the attention of both the public and the politicians, and thus the American Association of the Red Cross came into being in 1881.
Clara Barton retired from the Red Cross in 1904. She died 8 years later on April 12,1912. Her legacy with the American Red Cross lives on.
What did Clara Barton want to do during the war time
Help some families to rebuild their home.
Advise the government to buy some medical supplies.
Treat the wounded soldiers by herself.
Collect money to buy medical supplies.
As is mentioned in Paragraph 2, when seeing Clara Barton’s arrival, how did Dr. Smith feel
Proud and joyful.
Excited and grateful.
Shy and nervous.
Exhausted and upset.
What was the author’s purpose for writing this passage
To explain how dangerous being a soldier was during the Civil War.
To compare and contrast the Red Cross in Switzerland and America.
To describe an important historical figure.
To illustrate the history of the Red Cross.
C
What is better for you Exercising in the great outdoors, or signing up for a gym To try and find out, the guardian was invited to spend a month working with fitness and sports psychology experts at University of Bath and the National Trust. The concept was that participants---including me---would spend alternate weeks exercising in a gym and on National Trust land.
The first week was spent on the exercise bikes, rowing machines and treadmills (跑步机) in a gym at Bath. Getting started at the gym was easy. There was a nice community too. People are gently joking and encouraging each other.
On the downside, it was hard to ignore the background noise of dance and pop music. And all the machines faced screens showing music videos, rolling news and sports channels. Not a place to get away from it all.
So it was a relief in week two to head for the hills of Dyrham, a National Trust parkland full of birds and deer.
Weeks three and four followed the same pattern. The diaries I had kept, questionnaires I had filled in, and heart monitors I had worn, were then analyzed by scientists from University of Bath.
The findings surprise me a bit. The heart monitors showed I had consumed a similar amount of energy whether exercising in the gym or outdoors. But fitness expert Martyn Standage was most interested in the fact that on the days when my exercise had been done outside, I used more energy through the rest of the day. Standage said this fitted with studies that suggest working out in the outdoors leads to a greater feeling of vitality (活力).
Jo Barton, who specializes in studying outdoor exercise, suggested that working out in the fresh air
could be “life-changing”. “Exercising in nature lifts your mood and increases your self-respect,” she said.
My verdict It was more fun outside but sometimes more convenient to get to the gym. A bit of both may be the way forward.
Which shows the author's exercise pattern in the four weeks
in the gym → in the outdoors → in the gym → in the outdoors
in the outdoors → in the outdoors → in the gym → in the gym
in the gym → in the gym → in the outdoors → in the outdoors
in the outdoors → in the gym → in the outdoors → in the gym
What can we infer about the author
He used more energy when exercising indoors.
He felt more energetic after exercising outdoors.
He was very tired after finishing daily exercise.
He summarized the findings after the experiment.
What was Barton' s attitude to outdoor exercise
A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Tolerant. D. Supportive.
The underlined word “verdict” in the last paragraph can be interpreted as .
A.opinion B.concern C.chance D.challenge

Back in the 1940s, in my town, everybody knew everybody else. We neighborhood children played freely together on the narrow streets, while from windows and balconies adults kept a watchful eye on us. It was only my lonely friend JoséManuel who was forbidden from joining us.
“Look, Evelyn," whispered Amalia. "He's up there again watching us play.” There he was, sitting on his balcony floor. He peered sadly down at us through the iron railing. While feeling dangerous, his grandma would not let him play downstairs, no matter how hard he begged. Furthermore, she kept to herself and never smiled, so most of us were afraid of her.
“One day," Amalia suddenly announced, "I'm going to ask his grandma to let him come down and play.
Maybe she is not so serious!" If anyone would have the courage to do that, it was my little sister Amalia.
It was June 23, and that night was the Night of San Juan. For this holiday, the tradition was to go to the beach and at exactly midnight, everyone would walk backward into the sea. People say that doing this three times that night brings good luck. I thought of my friend José Manuel . Perhaps if he did this with us, his luck would change, and his grandma would allow him to play with us outside on the street.
Back on the street we heard the vegetable vendor(小贩)chanting:“I sell cassava, plantains, tomatoes!” He came around every evening to sell his fresh cassava, plantains, tomatoes, and other fruits and vegetables.
Leaning from her balcony, a big woman lowered a basket that was tied by a rope to the rail. In it was the money that the vendor replaced with two green eggplants.
As we approached our street I saw José Manuel and his grandma out on the second floor. She gave José Manuel money and went back inside. He was about to lower his basket when we thought maybe there was a way we could ask him to join us.
