Mark Twain's real name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Why is the man born as
Samuel Clemens more widely known as Mark Twain It has something to do with his
love of the Mississippi River and his time as a pilot of the great steamboats. “Mark
Twain” was an old term used on the river. It meant that the water was two fathoms or
twelve feet deep, which meant it was safe.
This term was first used as a personal name by Captain Isaiah Sellers, an old,
knowledgeable man. He liked to send his advice and opinion to local newspapers,
where he named himself Mark Twain.
In 1861, Clemens wrote a very funny story about Sellers. The story was for
Clemens' own, and other pilots' amusement. However, a man named Bart Bowen gave
it to one of the New Orleans newspapers. Captain Sellers saw and read the piece, and
was deeply hurt by it. He never published his opinion again, and Clemens felt bad
about the part he had played in this.
In 1863, Clemens was out west, in Carson City. He heard that Sellers had passed
away. Then he decided to use the name, Mark Twain, for himself. Soon, Clemens
became known as Mark Twain, on paper and in real life.
In fact, he liked to be a steamboat pilot so much that he never considered any
other profession. But in the Civil War, the use of all riverboats had to stop. Taking the

More Americans say they are on a special diet compared with Americans about
10 years ago. That information comes from a report released this week by the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC. The increased dieting comes at
a time when obesity levels continue to rise. The CDC report found that 17 percent of
Americans said they were on diets in 2017-2018 — up from 14 percent about 10
years earlier. Over the same period, obesity levels increased in the U.S. to 42 percent
— up from 34 percent.
Dana Hunnes is a professor of public health and nutrition at the University of
California, Los Angeles. Hunnes said that the number of Americans who said that
they are on a diet is lower than expected. This is because diet-related diseases are very
common in the country. The report noted that about half of American adults have
diet-related health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. Generally speaking,
more women reported being o n a diet than men. The heavier and more educated
people were, the more likely they were to report being on a special diet, the study
found.
Between 2007 and 2008, and 2017 and 2018, diets described as "weight loss or
low calorie" grew in popularity. Low-carbohydrate diets became more popular, while
low-fat and low-cholesterol diets became less popular. The findings were part of an
continuous national survey. People who took part in the survey were asked the
following question: "Are you currently on any kind of diet, either to lose weight or for
some other health-related reason "
Becky Ramsing is a dietician and program officer at Johns Hopkins Center for a
Livable Future. Ramsing said that people make very different kinds of choices in
hopes of losing weight. In some cases, she said people might not understand why the
choices they make do not help them lose weight.

Throughout my life, there is one teacher who really impresses me. 32.
My time in 8th grade felt like forever because you just want to be in high school
already. Math you just wanted to sleep, science you wanted to cry, social studies you
would wish for it to be over, but English class would just make up for the whole day.
Mrs. Thomas would actually make me want to stay awake in her class. It was like she
actually understood us and knew how to keep our full attention. Every day I couldn’t
wait to go to her class. 33 You could talk to her like she was your friend and not
your boss.
34 Like in the beginning of the year she made us take pictures of ourselves
and write goals of what you wanted for the school year in her class. Every day, when
you would come into class, you would look at your goals and see if you achieve any;
it was pretty smart. I remember she also made us write a letter to ourselves in the
beginning of the year in her class. We opened them at the end of the year to see how
much we changed. It was like she was trying to push us to be able to complete those
goals, so that later on in life we can use that ability again. 35 If you wanted an A,
you had to work for that A.
Mrs. Thomas not only got us ready for high school but also really prepared me
for life in the future. 36
A. The following is a class she taught us
B. She made me realize how interesting learning can be
C. She often made us struggle for what we dreamed of in life
D. I remember how much fun it was to do activities in her class
E. She would wake me up when I sometimes slept in her class

Dear Leslie,
I’m glad to receive your email. You asked me to share with you what I experienced in the epidemic situation. Here are my experiences.
Since the outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia in Baoji in March, 2022, I had been staying at the hotel. On the one hand, I paid close attention to the epidemic situation through watching CCTV news or surfing the Internet; on the other hand, I insisted on studying online. Not only did I read classics, but also I had online courses given by my teachers. Besides, I took exercise every day to keep healthy. Faced with the disaster, many people including doctors, nurses and scientists acted bravely and spared no effort to fight against it. What they did impressed us most and we should do all we can to study well.
Thank you for your concern. I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
