One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in haste (匆忙). He wanted to be first to wish a happy New Year.
He looked in every room, and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street, to repeat them to those he might meet.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore. He left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books.
As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children shivering with cold. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was gayly passing on. The man shook his head. “You do not belong to this country,” said Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak our language.
But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.” Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in distress (困境). He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.
How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which doubtless, meant, “We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you in our prayers.
Paragraph 1:
When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought.

Paragraph 2:
“My dear boy,” said his father, “here is a whole bundle of books.”

When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. “I have bought no books,” said he, “I give my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry,” adding “I think I can wait for my books till next New Year.” His father asked the reason. He explained it was a German family who didn’t have enough clothes to wear. Edward’s explanation made his father understand what had happened and he expressed that he couldn’t agree more with him. “I will buy you some books,” promised father.
“My dear boy,” said his father, “here is a whole bundle of books.” To his surprise, the books were exactly what he wanted. Holding the books his father gave him in his arms, Edward felt he was the happiest boy in the world. He felt the sweetness of helping others. A few days later, Edward met the family again, and they still thanked him thousand times. He knew that help means we all can give a hand to people in need under any circumstances.

For my fifth-grade science fair project, I got six chicken eggs in an incubator(孵化器).
“But I don’t know anything about hatching an egg.”
Mrs. Brubeck smiled. “You don’t have to be an immediate expert at everything, Juli. The idea here is to learn something new.”
“But what if they die ”
“Then they die. Document your work scientifically and you’ll still get an A.” She pulled The Beginner’s Guide to Raising Chickens from her bookshelf and said, “Read the book and set yourself up tonight.”
That night I came home, more worried than ever. I’d read the book. I had to turn the eggs three times a day and regulate the temperature and humidity(湿度). But aside from that, what was there to do
My father came with a cardboard tube and a flashlight. He taped the two together so that the light beam was forced straight out the tube. “I will show you how to candle the eggs,” he said, then switched off the light and held an egg up to the cardboard tube. “The light lets you see through the shell so you can watch the embryo(胚胎) develop. Look, see the dark spot here ”
“Is that an embryo ”
“That’s it!”
Suddenly it felt real. The eggs were alive! Surely they had to live!
For the next three weeks, I was completely consumed with the growing of chicks. I labeled the eggs A, B, C, D, E and F, but before long they had names, too: Abby, Bonnie, Clyde, Dexter, Eunice and Florence. Every day I weighed them, candled them, turned them. I drew diagrams of various stages of an embryo’s development. I documented the daily changes and weight loss of each egg. On the outside the eggs were boring, but I knew what was happening inside!

Then one morning I was candling Bonnie when I noticed a gentle peck (啄). Was it coming out I called my parents and the three of us crowded around, watching Bonnie pip. His little beak cracked through, and while I held my breath and waited, he rested. And rested. Finally its beak poked through again. After what seemed a long time, Bonnie broke out of the shell first. Then came the others. They were wet, weak and ugly at first sight, but soon they became fluffy. It was absolutely amazing.
The day came when I was supposed to hand in my science fair project. I packed up all my chickens, documents and charts and got a ride to school. These beautiful little things caught immediate attention. “You’ve got six alive! The record is three!” Mrs. Brubeck was quite impressed. The whole class stuck around for a whole morning, asking various questions. I shared with them the process as well as the joy of witnessing a new life coming into this world. What an experience! They don’t mean it
Our family moved here from China two years ago, and we thought we were pretty well adjusted to American ways. This year my parents decided to give a party on Chinese New Year and invite some of our American friends.
The party went pretty well. Our guests were amazed at the flavor of all the special foods. After the dinner, they thanked us for showing them what a real Chinese New Year dinner was like.
“I loved the dishes. You and the girls must have spent hours doing all the work!” Mrs. O’Meara said to my mother.
“The girls helped with the cutting and I’m sorry they did such a terrible job.” said Mother.
I heard a little gasp(倒吸气) from my friend Kim O’Meara, who stared wide-eyes at Mother. When I asked what the matter was, she told me she just didn’t understand why my mother said so.
I had to laugh. “She doesn’t mean it! It’s just the way she talks.”
Seeing her still confused look, I went on explaining, “In China, parents consider it good manners to deny praises about their children. Otherwise, it would be the same as bragging(自夸).” Kim seemed a little hesitant, but she nodded anyway.
That Easter, the O’Mearas invited our family for dinner. Mrs. O’Meara cooked a huge ham which we enjoyed a lot. As Mrs. O’Meara started cutting up the cake for dessert, Mother said, “I’m not sure if I can eat one more bite. That was the best ham I’ve ever tasted!”
“Aw, that ham was terrible,” said Kim. “I bet you could do a lot better, Mrs. Yang.”

【参考范文】There was a stunned(震惊的) silence around the table. Kim was on the receiving end of a cold stare from Mrs. O’Meara, whose face reddened with embarrassment. I was also shocked at my friend’s mean remark. Clearing my throat, I finally asked, “What made you talk like that to your mother ” Kim whirled around, seemingly “But you were the one who told me that saying nice things about your own family was the same as bragging!” she stuttered. “I was just trying to act modest!”
I finally knew how Kim had misunderstood what I had said.“Listen, Kim,” I took her hands in mine to calm her down, “Chinese parents might say critical things about their children to show modesty but young people are always expected to be respectful to the elders.” Hearing this, Kim sighed deeply, her cheeks flushed. The awkward silence was soon dispelled as the misunderstanding was erased. Drooping her head, Kim apologized for her impolite behavior. Mrs. O’Meara winked at her, joking, “That’s all right. We know you didn’t mean it!”

Now most of her days were spent baking bread and cookies or with friends and neighbors.
When Eloise returned from a get-together with her friends one evening, Josh pointed to a black-and-white picture lying on the table, and said, “Hi, Grandma. 1 found this in my closet (壁橱),Is that you and Granddad ” Eloise looked at the picture and laughed quietly. “Oh, that was a long time ago. “That’s your granddad and me before we were married. We met at a party. I loved to dance, and he was a good dancer,” Eloise smiled, enjoying the memories that came flooding back.
“After we got married, we rarely had time to go dancing. But every once in a while, after the children went to bed, we’d pull out the record player and dance in the backyard under the stars.”
Leaning back in his chair, Josh appeared to be enjoying the story. “Wow, Granddad was quite a romantic guy!”
“Yeah. He was very romantic. I still miss him dearly.” Eloise shook her head, attempting to get rid of the lonely feeling that was beginning to form.“Well, it’s getting late now. Let’s get some sleep.” “I’ve really enjoyed hearing the story about you and Granddad,” Josh hugged his grandma. Then he went back to his room.

The next morning, Josh started to prepare his “present from the past” secretly. Picturing the scene where Granddad and Grandma once spent time together under the stars in his mind, Josh got down to carrying out his plans in the backyard. To his great delight, he managed to borrow several paper lanterns, a small TV tray and an old record player from neighbors. Songs to Grandma’s taste and a vase of wild flowers were also prepared. With everything ready, all he had to do was wait for the starry night to come.
After finishing dinner that night, Josh invited and led his grandma to the backyard. Eloise gasped in astonishment at what came into view — paper lanterns glowing against the sky, a small TV tray holding an old-fashioned record player and a vase of handpicked flowers — and her thoughts flew back to the past days when her husband was alive. Hearing Josh’s “Happy Birthday, Grandma!”, she came out of her trance and hugged him. Then Josh held out his hand and asked gently, “Would you like to dance, Eloise ” With bleary eyes, Eloise replied,“I’d love to, Josh.”

In 2000, when I was around seven years old, all my family were coming back from a T-ball game, which was our usual weekend adventure, but unlike every other weekend, a surprise was waiting for us in our driveway—two adult geese and a small goose. Obviously startled by our return, the adults flew away in panic, with their baby, too young to fly, left in place, tiny and delicate.
Hours passed one after another, and night eventually fell. However, with it also came a deep chill and a fear of watchful animals. It was apparent that the gosling needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning, so we had to help it, and we brought him onto our back yard.
We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to drive the goose away to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them, though, and neither would they come close enough to claim him. We kept this up for five days, but no luck. Realizing the young goose had clearly decided we were his family by then, we had to give him a name, calling the little guy Peeper, because he would often follow us around the yard making a peeping(唧唧叫) noise, nonstop. Besides, we decided that Peeper was a boy. I don’t know why; it just felt right.
A year passed and we settled into a routine. Peeper slept on our back yard each night and, in typical goose fashion, used it as a latrine(公共厕所). My dad would spray off all the goose droppings daily. Part of this ceremony included Dad throwing Peeper up into the air so he could flap its wings and flew a loop(圈) around the house, and then came back again once the porch was clean.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months.
Paragraph 1:
Before we knew it, the little thing had grown into a big bird with two powerful wings.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
It came as a total surprise to me when, in 2020, an adult goose made his way back to my family home.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【参考范文】Paragraph1:
Before we knew it, the little thing had grown into a big bird with two powerful wings. One day, when Dad threw Peeper into the air, he just flew away and didn’t come back. With night falling, all of us became increasingly worried. We looked for him, called his name and even peeped like him, anxiously expecting his return. But the special buddy never appeared again. Suddenly losing the special companion, everyone was very, very sad. It took a long time before we accepted the fact that he was missing. Meanwhile, we could only pray he found his parents and went off on his natural way. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a fond memory for my family.
Paragraph 2:
It came as a total surprise to me when, in 2019, an adult goose made his way back to my family home. He did all of the same things Peeper used to do in Peepers old ways, and much to my surprise, he even responded to the name Peeper. It became clear to me that my old best friend had returned, 20 years later. This experience has been as meaningful to me as anything in my life. Looking beyond our reach high in the sky, birds have feelings like human beings, so do many other living things. We human beings should learn to get along well with them. We need each other’s care and protection.

Jen and her brother, Rick, live on the west coast of Australia; swimming and surfing have become a routine for them. They see all kinds of fish, such as lovely dolphins, huge whales and even fierce sharks.
Last weekend, Jen was on beach, standing on the hot sand. Enormous waves crashed along mile after mile of beautiful sand. Rick was happy because he had a new surfboard Rick’s favorite sport is surfing.
“I’m going to look at the fish underwater,” Jen waved to Rick, putting her blue rubber fins on her feet. Then she put the yellow mask and snorkel on her face.
The water was warm. Jen took a big breath and dived down and down. She could see fish and plants through her mask and the fish swam all around her. Jen observed or touched the tall or small plants growing on the rocks. Some were soft and some rough. Fish live in the plants and rocks.
Jen was swimming past a large rock when she saw a blue dolphin keep still.
Trapped in a net around the rock, the dolphin wasn’t able to swim up to get air. Moving its fins painfully, the poor blue dolphin was dying slowly.
Immediately, Jen pulled the net from the rocks and then freed the dolphin. It moved its fins quickly and swam up. It took a breath of air. The blue dolphin looked down at Jen gratefully, swimming away.
On the way home, she told her brother about her adventure with the blue dolphin with great interest.
The following day it was still hot, and more people swam in the sea, playing and laughing. The hot sun shone, and the water was silver and blue.

Last March, Margarito drove to visit his mother who lived in the countryside. When he set off for home, Margarito’s mother looked at the dark sky and noticed the sign of a coming storm. Worried about her son’s safety, she told him to drive as carefully as possible on his way home and he promised to give her a call upon his arrival.
With his mother’s words in mind, Margarito approached the main road carefully. Soon, it started to rain heavily. Eager to get home, Margarito began to drive faster. Two hours later, he came to a bumpy mountain road that had been flooded by a creek (小溪). Margarito, driving a four-wheel drive truck, figured that he would be OK. At that moment, he didn’t realize that such a thought would be a big mistake.
It was halfway across the creek that an unfortunate incident took place: The rushing waters grabbed hold of his vehicle, pushing it off the road and sending it down a rocky creek bed. The truck finally stopped some 80 feet away. Margarito’s problems only grew from there as the water had somehow positioned the truck into the creek bank at a 45-degree angle, making it difficult for him to open the driver’s side door. Injured and trapped inside with the muddy water rising quickly, Margarito was certain he was going to die. Shaking with fear, he was at a loss about what to do.
On the road right behind Margarito were a delivery worker named Steve and his nephew Mike, who were on the way to deliver furniture to customers in the countryside. They witnessed the horrible incident, and when Margarito’s truck came to rest in the middle of the overflowing creek, Steve quickly began to take action. First, he grabbed a rope from the back of his vehicle and used it to ensure he could safely approach the truck.

Relieved, Margarito reached out for Steve’s hand and was rescued. The two men escaped and returned to safety.
Margarito was about to thank Steve and Mike when the mobile phone in his jacket pocket rang. With trembling hands, Margarito took out the phone and pressed it to his ear. His mother’s anxious voice came over the phone, “Are you home yet Everything’s good ” Tears welled up in his eyes at the familiar sound of concern. Margarito choked up as he explained the accident to his mom and comforted her. Hanging up the phone, he turned to Steve and Mike and sincerely thanked both of them. Snow began when she was halfway home. Listening to the radio, Kathy learned the highway was closed because a tractor had slid off the road. She texted some friends and her mom, and tried not to sleep as she waited.
After a couple of hours, however, conditions worsened. Strong winds began rocking Kathy's car. She couldn't see anything outside, and snow was drifting up her doors. It was, she says, “a total white out and rows of cars and trucks”.
Late in the afternoon a police officer came and asked if she was in any difficulty. She said she was fine. She asked the police officer if there was any way to get past the trucks. “No, ma'am,” he answered. “You're not going anywhere.”
Once as it got dark, Kathy began to worry. She texted his brother Cris, telling him to drive snowmobiling buddy to get to the highway and find her.
As Cris rode slowly alongside the rows of cars and trucks, people would roll down their windows and ask for help. “I was the first person they'd seen in six hours.” He explained he was picking up his sister. He told them, “Nobody's coming and I can't take you.”
Near 10 p.m., Cris reached Kathy. He directed Kathy to pull her car onto the shoulder and asked her to get into his snowmobiling buddy.
As they headed for home, the fun started. About five kilometres into the journey, Cris made a mistake. What he thought was a shallow ditch turned out to be a deep trough. Instead of coming out the other side, they just kept going down. They were trapped. And feathery snow was over their heads.

Seeing the fire, people ran over and managed to pull her car out with all their efforts, making Cris ashamed for his refusal to others.
Para. 2:
When they arrived at their home, their mother was waiting for them. She asked them what had happened. Cris explained, “I made a terrible mistake. One day, a man and a young teenage boy checked in to a hotel and were kindly shown to their room. The two staff members noted the quiet manner of the guests, and the pale appearance of the boy, who didn’t look quite well. Later, the man and the boy ate dinner in the hotel restaurant. The staff again noticed that the two guests were very quiet and barely talked to each other, and that the boy seemed disinterested in his food. After eating, the boy went directly to his room and the man went to reception and asked to see the manager. The receptionist asked if there was a problem with the service or the room, and offered to fix things, but the man said that there was no problem of that kind, and repeated his request in a kind manner. The manager was called and duly appeared. The man asked to speak in private and was taken into the manager’s office.
The man explained that he was spending the night in the hotel with his 14-year-old son, who was diagnosed with cancer and thus was seriously ill, probably terminally so. He had gone through various treatments which were supposed to make him feel better. And he did, but his mood changed forever. He was not as happy as before and usually felt down. The boy was soon to receive chemotherapy (化疗), which would cause him to lose his hair. The father knew this was going to end badly for his son. In order to lift the boy's spirits, they had come to the hotel to have a break together, enjoying some father- and-son moments. The father continued that the boy needed to shave his head that night, which would probably give him unwanted attention. He would like his son to be strong, rather than feel that the illness was beating him. In the meantime, he also wanted to protect. his son’s dignity (尊严) and let him feel normal just as everyone else.

What It Means to Serve
I didn’t continue college after graduation. I moved out of my family. With little work experience, I served as a waitress. But during the five years’ labor, I found myself burning calories running about only for a tip.
I had had enough so I moved to a smaller town hoping to pursue a college degree. I promised I would never serve people again - at least not in such way. It was time to serve myself. Luckily, I received a position as an afterschool program tutor at a local middle school, with the added benefit of completing English education degree. I had the opportunity to go big! The kid would need me - a role model and a trustworthy friend, I believed.
But my first day was welcomed by the students’ indifference (冷漠). The desks were messy and the whole room smelled of dirty gym socks. My excitement began to die down. I doubted whether the new job was a mistake. The playground activity was deafening while homework time was not much better. After my repeated persistence, they finally turned off the playground mode. But just a few minutes passed when I noticed two kids quarreling in the corner.
I supposed it was another little incident but one kid named Jeremy bothered me. He shouted at me for coming at him. And when I asked them to return to their seats, he slammed (用力摔) his backpack and grew mad as I tried to urge him to take the right attitude. “I don’t like you, homework and this afterschool program! All you guys do is yell at me. I’m never coming back.” he walked out of the classroom, slamming the door.
Naturally, I was so frustrated (挫败的). I wondered why I am here. Most kids disrespected me! I paused to take a deep breath. Then suddenly I thought to myself, “You said you would never serve people again, but you don’t understand what these kids really need.” At that moment, I remembered my middle-school life. I always had a poor attitude, never did my schoolwork, repeatedly got into fights, and disrespected my elders.

He turned around, looked at me for a moment and nodded, “OK”. “Jeremy, could you tell me what have happened to you ” I asked. Hesitantly, Jeremy began to share with me about his story. From what he said, I knew his mother was killed in a car accident three months before. Worse still, his father, who was in deep sorrow, lost his job at the same time. After that, his father became bad-tempered and often shouted at him, ignoring all his requests. As he told me what was happening, he began to cry.
At that moment, my heart broke for this boy and his family life. I gently hugged him and patted him on the back. Then I walked him home and encouraged him to face life in a positive way. After that, I often chatted with Jeremy and helped him deal with his troubles. I even paid a visit to his father several times. As time went by, Jeremy behaved better and better and smiles often appeared on his face. At the end of the program, Jeremy hugged me tightly and thanked me again and again. At that moment, I suddenly realized what it meant to serve --- Get to know a person from the bottom of your heart and give what he needs.

An Act of Neighborliness
The skies were dark. A strong wind was blowing hard, cutting my face like a sharp knife. Rain fell in big drops and thunder and lightning flashed across the skies. I shook with cold and fear as I walked home, through the streams of muddy water. Some people were rushing by, completely wet in the heavy rain.
Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren holding their heavy schoolbags tightly and rushing home, I also saw that some road repair work had been abandoned by workers. Obviously, the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were few signs and it was hard to see what was on the road. There were pieces of wood and metal and it looked like a hole had been dug and hurriedly covered with boards.
I moved on but suddenly stopped as I heard some sounds. It sounded like children crying. I quickly turned back and went back to the place from where the sounds came. I was frightened! To my sadness, I found that a small child had fallen into the hole on the road. The boards had moved away with the force of the rushing water. I could hardly see the child as it was dark all around me. I told he that I was going to look for help. I knew the neighbors well, and they all shared a sense of neighborliness, willing to give a hand.

【参考范文】 Actually, I was not sure of what to do or where to go but decided to go to the nearest house for help. I charged away to knock on the door on end. After a while, an athletic man of medium height opened the door. Panicked as I was, I attempted to collect my thoughts, trying to explain the situation in the way as concise as possible. While calming me by patting my shoulder, the man reached over to grab the torch on the shoe cabinet near the door. No sooner had we arrived where the child was trapped than the man started to scan the surroundings. Then he inched toward the hole and stretched out to seize the child’s hands, pulling him out completely. Shortly afterwards, we sent the child to the nearest police station and waited for his parents.
The parents of the child who just arrived from work were totally shocked to hear of what had happened. They were more than grateful and thanked us. With an outpouring of relief, I was also proud of myself, as I had never imagined I would be part of a rescue party and the act of neighborliness could really make such a difference. While the mother and the father were holding the child tightly, I spotted the man beaming at the child with softness gleaming in his eyes. I was absorbed in my wild thought, wondering whether he was also a tender father. All of a sudden, thunder crashed overhead, which brought me back to reality. I walked to the man and tugged his sleeve, whispering, “Thank you.” I would never forget the good feeling of helping someone in need.

It was a hot and wet day in late summer. I was a young dad working in a local wood factory. It was dangerous, back-breaking work that paid very little.
In the year I had worked there, only four other people hadn’t quit and been replaced with new faces. Those of us who stayed did so only because there was no other work to find to support our families.
One day the electric fans weren’t working and all of us were covered in sweat and sawdust . When I looked around every face, they looked angry and frustrated. Suddenly, a voice called out: “Hey! There’s a deer in here. A lost little deer had wandered through the open loading bay doors and was now hiding in fear in between the huge piles of wood. All of us stopped working and went looking for her as she ran about crazily looking for a way out.
Now most people where I live hunt deer for meat in the fall but treat them with great kindness the rest of the year. Many will even buy bags of corn to help feed them during the cold winter months. It was no surprise then that all of us were soon quickly working together to free this little deer. By blocking off all the other routes, we were able to guide her crazy search back to the open bay doors.
We watched as she jumped out of the building and back into the woods. Then we walked back in to work. I noticed something, though. On every face, there was a joyful smile. It seemed as if this one single act of kindness had energized us again and reminded us of what life was all about.

Walking along the Erie Canal, I saw two women coming towards me. I thought they must be mother and daughter. The daughter reached into her pocket and handed her mom a snack. They both laughed.
I started to think of my mother. She got dementia (痴呆)in the early stage. How could I leave her to take care of herself I was a wife and a mother who worked full-time. The answer was simple: I couldn't. I knew I had to act to keep her safe just like she protected me when she took my tiny hand and walked me to the kindergarten.
I came up with the idea of seeking a college student for help. Living close to a college, I contacted someone in Student Services. I needed a responsible student to live with my mom free of charge. Luckily, the college representative found one for me and got us in contact.
We met at a local store. Walking in, I saw her before she saw me. On the table sat the College' Admissions Handbook. “Could she be as nervous as I am ” I asked myself. With every step I took forward, I felt another pushing me back.
“Hi, I'm Hannah,” I said, reaching out my hand.
“Amanda,” she said with a smile.
We both felt a bit awkward, but I still asked, “Tell me something about yourself.” “I'm from Kenya. I hope to go to college to be a nurse, but I can't afford the dorm,” she said, tears in her eyes.
I took a deep breath and said slowly, “My mom has dementia. I need someone to be my eyes and ears. That person would get a free room and free access to the Internet, living with my mother.”
More tears from Amanda. Then she said, “I know you don't know me, but I'm very responsible. I would never do any harm to your mother, and I want so badly to be a nurse.” We talked a lot and finally I believed her and gave her my mother’s address.

When Micah was a child, I used to do many things with her. Later, I got promoted and was always on constant business holidays. 3 years' devotion to work resulted in my absence from her life and now she was a teenage girl. Recently, I eventually managed to have abundant time to accompany her.
For the last few weeks, Micah had watched mockingbirds make a nest in a tree and lay eggs there. Sometimes, I came to accompany her without being invited. But whenever I made an attempt to break the ice, “I'm good” was about all she said to me. Code for “Leave me alone”.
“Why doesn't she want to do things with me ”I thought as I set the table for dinner one evening, hoping for an emotion bridge to reappear between us. Did she feel hurt with my long absence or feel ignored Lost in thought, I was seeking to mend the relationship.
“Mom!” Micah yelled suddenly. “Come quick!”
Surprised, I rushed out, only to find a little baby bird on the ground, weak and helpless. My eyes went to the branches above.
“The wind must have blown him out of the nest,”I said.
“No, it was Mr. Whiskers -our cat. You let him go outside!” Micah said, a bit annoyed.
Looking at the nest without the parents, “I'm sorry,”I said and put the bird in my palm cautiously and gently. She didn't respond, but did not refused my offer to help, either. Deciding to take care of the little baby till it became independent, I placed it in its nest. “What should we do next ” I asked. No response again. On one beautiful morning, as we passed his house, my daughter piped up and called out to him, “Hi, Mr. Man!”She was an outgoing girl, and I wasn't surprised at her cheerfulness, but her enthusiasm soon faded when the man didn’t look at her or say ‘Hi’ back.
As we continued on our walk to school, my daughter asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Stumbling for words, because I didn’t have the answer, I said simply, “Maybe he is having a bad day.”

At once, Megan called our state's coronavirus hotline, who then called in our primary care doctor and the head of our local hospital system's coronavirus team. We explained that we had been in contact with someone who had been tested positive, and I was having symptoms. They quickly approved me to receive a test at an urgent care center located five minutes' drive from my house. The result made my heart sank — I was also tested positive, and the local hospital wasn't equipped with the facilities to treat my disease. As a mild case, I was recommended to stay at home and quarantine (隔离)myself.
Following the doctor's advice, Megan and I quarantined ourselves and our children. With my developed symptoms , I started isolation in the bedroom, and the only interaction I had with Megan was when she brought in food. Megan slept on a small couch in our home office away from the kids' rooms. She also minimized her contact with our kids in case she was carrying the virus.
