Answer the questions:
Water pollution is when waste, chemicals, or other things cause water to become harmful to the fish and animals that need the water to live on.
Human causes of water pollution
A lot of water pollution comes from human activities. Some human causes include pesticides(杀虫剂) and fertilizers(肥料) from farms, waste water and chemicals from factories and trash from people littering.
An influence on the whole food chain
Small fish eat pollutants (污染物质) such as chemicals. Then bigger fish eat the smaller fish and get the pollutants too. If birds ate the fish that were infected (感染), they would lay eggs with thin shells. And the population of the birds would begin to drop.
Effects on health
Clean water is very important for life on the Earth. And it is nearly impossible to get clean water for over one billion people on the planet. Dirty and polluted water can make them sick and is especially harmful to young children.
What can you do to help
Save water and do not waste it! Take shorter showers, make sure that the toilet is not running and do not leave the tap running. Do not use weed killer. Ask your parents if you can pull the weeds in the yard, they do not need to use weed killer. Always pick up your trash, especially when at the beach, lake or river.
Facts about water pollution
Soap from washing your car can run down the street drain and cause water pollution. Only around 1% of the Earth’s water is fresh water. The rest is salty and we can’t drink it. Around 40% of the rivers and lakes in the United States are too polluted for fishing or swimming. Between five and ten million people die each year from water pollution-related illnesses.

Answer the questions:
After his Master Chef Junior run, 12-year-old Evan Robinson is using his kitchen skills to raise money for Puerto Rico. The TV show winner wanted to offer help after hurricanes hit the country last September.
“I’ve been seeing, all over the news, people lived too hard,” Evan said. “They can’t get fresh water or electricity. They can’t get really anything. I know I’m just a kid, but I think if a lot of people do something, a lot of things will get better.”
He raises money by baking and taking online orders for homemade pies. He started cooking on a recent Friday night. By the next Sunday evening, he had filled orders for 420 pies—roasted chicken, cheeseburgers and vegetarian—getting $18 for six pies and $30 for a dozen.
For Evan’s out-of-town friends and supporters, he has also set up a crowd-funding(众筹) page. Through it, he’s already raised $1,500 in “virtual (虚拟的) pies”. He said fruit pies are up next.
His mum, Veronica Robinson, is in charge of delivering the pies around the city. “We’ve never done anything like this before,” she said, “but it’s a great idea, so I want to help him.”
His baking will continue as well. This is because he heard about the news that it would take Puerto Rico years, maybe even 10 years to recover (恢复) from the hurricanes.
It’s not an easy job, especially for a kid with homework and Boy Scouts and friendships to tend to. But he doesn’t seem worried. “It’s what we’re supposed to do,” he said, “I’m a human. They’re humans. Why shouldn’t I help them ”

Every day, it is easy to see advertisements in English all around us. Look at your own bags and clothes, and the bags and clothes of your classmates. Often bags and clothes show the name of the company that made them. This is a popular form of advertising. A special picture or symbol called a logo (标识) is sometimes used. Joseph Sekar is a 62-year-old man in India. He feeds thousands of parrots every day. And he has earned himself the nickname “birdman”.
Joseph always left small amounts of rice on his roof. The neighbourhood parrots often came to eat it. One day two parrots flew in and Joseph fed them some rice. The birds not only returned the following day, but also brought along other hungry friends. Recently between 2,000~4,000 beautiful parrots visit the birdman twice a day!
Joseph does not feed the birds raw (生的) rice. He cooks the rice! This means that the amazing man gets up at 4.30 a.m. every morning and spends over an hour making the breakfast for birds. He then spreads the rice across 14 wooden planks (木板) on his roof.
The breakfast rush begins at about 6.00 a.m. when the beautiful parrots fly in and continues until every last grain of the delicious rice is gone! The ritual (习惯) is repeated in the afternoon when the birds arrive at around 4.00p.m. and stay for almost two hours. Besides feeding them, the superhero also takes in sick or injured birds and nurses them back to health.
Of course, feeding so many birds is not a cheap job. Joseph spends 40% of his daily income (收入) of $13 as a camera repairman on the meals every day. The generous man says all of his actions come out of love.
Though Joseph has no immediate plans to stop the tradition, he does worry about what will happen to the beautiful birds as he gets older and is unable to continue.

NEWSPAPERS have certainly been around for a long time. Many New Zealand newspapers are now heading towards their 125th anniversary (周年纪念) of the first publication and some New Zealand papers are more than 140 years old.
However, some people think that newspapers are yesterday’s medium (传媒) and that new media, like television and even the Internet, will in the very near future cause newspapers to die. What is clear is that the growth of new media, and in particular the Internet, will cause newspapers to change themselves and change their product to meet customers’ needs.
People read newspapers because of their unique (独特的) strength. They have a large audience and yet a certain appeal. They reach the majority (大多数) of the population each day through covering national and international news and yet they offer interest to gardeners, cooks and even slaves to fashion.
Newspapers also remain strong because of people’s continued love of reading. Reading is an active and involving (专注的) process, but people are able to read at their own speed and return to newspapers for reference purposes.
Newspapers will certainly not stop the Internet being a competitor (竞争者). But no newly-introduced news medium has ever killed an old one, and if best guesses are to be made then it is likely that this will be the case with this new medium as well.

Coffee is more popular today than ever before. Well, thanks to the world’s first colourless coffee, you do not have to w__1__ about stained (染色) teeth any more.
After getting tired of looking for a coffee drink that had the natural flavour they loved so much but did not stain their teeth, David and Adam Nagy, two Slovakian brothers who like strong coffee and their teeth white, decided to c__2__ it themselves. Called CLR CFF, their wonderful drink is exactly what it sounds like—clear coffee.
It sounds like a gimmick (噱头), but the Nagy brothers claimed that CLR CFF was made from high-quality Arabica coffee beans and p__3__ water, with no artificial (人造的) flavours or sugar added. It took them three months to come up with a colourless coffee that actually keeps its flavour, however, for now they are keeping the recipe a s__4__.
David and Adam Nagy started a while ago to raise money to fund their idea. Unluckily, it only raised $494 of its $37,178goal. However, that did not stop them from making their d__5__ of a colourless coffee that does not stain their teeth a reality.
So how does colourless coffee taste Staffers at English newspaper Metro described it as drinkable. So I guess you will have to try it for y__6__ to find out just how much like real coffee this stuff really is.
The sad news is that the world’s first colourless coffee is available only in the UK and Slovakia, at a high price of $7.70 for two 200-ml clear-glass bottles. It is certainly not cheap, but it is also not much more e__7__ than Starbucks coffee.

Answer the questions:
Imagine a sport much like equestrian (马术) show jumping, but the horse is replaced by a wooden stick with a toy horse, and the rider actually does all the jumping over increasingly difficult hurdles (跨栏). That is the popular sport of hobby-horsing.
The hobby horse is one of the oldest children’s toys still used today. Many of us remember jumping around in the yard over a stick, but in my opinion, riding a toy horse is more than just a game in Finland. Many of them train for hours and hours and regularly take part in jumping competitions where they try to impress judges with their posture (姿势), footwork and jumping.
Competitive hobby-horsing starts with the “horses”. There are a lot of websites that sell toy horses, and some people even knit (织) their own horse heads to mount on a stick. The horses often have names and are being cared for like real animals.
It is not clear how exactly hobby-horsing became so popular among Finnish teenage girls. Owning a horse is difficult for someone living in the city.In equestrian show jumping contests, you see the rider guiding the horse to jump over obstacles, but in Finland, competitors use their own legs to take themselves and the wooden horse over obstacles as high as three feet, which requires lots of training. However, many people in the Scandinavian countries see competitive hobby-horsing just as a childish game.

In the desert, there is very little rain and it is very hot in the day and so cold at night. If you are a hiker or drive through the desert, it might be wise to know what you should do in order to survive in the desert.
Drink a small amount of water every hour. If you find a small piece of land where the earth is wet, dig deep to look for water. Another method of getting water is to cover a green plant with a plastic bag. As it breathes, the water vapor will be collected inside the bag. Little by little, you can collect enough water to drink.
Plan to travel at night and sleep during the day if you have to survive in the desert for a period of time. If you can find any shade in the desert, use it as a shelter to protect you from the strong sunlight.
Wear clothing in light colour. It may seem like you will be cooler if you wear that kind of clothes, which actually helps your body to become cool and helps protect you from sunburn.
Prepare to signal planes passing overhead if you are caught in the desert. During the day keep a smoky fire burning and at night, a bright, clean burning one. Spell out the word “SOS” on the ground as large as you can using whatever materials you can find. In this way, you are more likely to be saved.

Answer the questions:
Dear Kids Advice Magazine,
Hi, my name is Evan and being the eldest child in the family surely has its disadvantages. First of all, I have to share all my toys and games with my younger siblings (兄弟姊妹), William and Julia. Of course, they don’t need to return the favour because I’m totally uninterested in their things. Besides that, Julia and William are always hanging around me. It’s especially annoying when I have a friend over. We look for a secluded place in the house where they can’t disturb us, but within minutes, they’ve found us. I just can’t seem to get a moment’s peace. At meal times, I have to eat whatever is on my plate regardless of the portion size or taste. William and Julia only need to try one bite when it’s not their favourite food. Not only this, but I’m expected to be cooperative (配合的) at all times because I’m the oldest and need to be a role model for them.
It doesn’t seem fair either that I have more chores to do around the house than Julia and William put together. Plus, when it comes to practicing our musical instruments, I have to practice more than double the time. Oh, and the worst part of it all is the huge quantities of homework I get compared to them.
I’m feeling rather annoyed with my sibling situation. Could you please write back with some advice

Evan Smith

Answer the questions:
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer (自动换币器) fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter (两角五分) out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note, “Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery.” and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then the buttermilk would magically appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete.
Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and fixed it on the back porch. My son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

People read books less often in these days. With the invention of radio, television and most recently, the Internet and computer games, it seems that reading books is no longer a popular activity. However, I believe that books are an important part of our lives.
Books offer an outstanding wealth of learning at a much cheaper price than taking a course. Books can make people much cleverer, because heavy readers have greater knowledge of how things work and who or what people were.
Everything in today’s society requires reading. Imagine trying to do something as simple as reading the instructions on a medicine bottle without good reading skills. Someone could not understand them and become very sick or even die.
Even something as simple as walking or driving through the city could become very dangerous without enough reading. Sometimes you must be able to understand what is written and explain the meaning of them.
Some people say that reading is a waste of time and we can do better things with our time. And reading books can strengthen our reading abilities. Reading is one of the greatest things we can do in our spare time.
With a book, you can travel anywhere you want, do anything you want and talk to anyone you want. Reading is very important in our lives, no matter what our ages are. So I do think people should read books.
