Raising a white flag has historically been considered a symbol of surrender(投降). In ancient Rome, a historian described a ship with “white wool and branches of olive” to show a wish to make peace. And another wrote of white flags that were waved as part of an army’s surrender during a battle in 69 A.D.
But recently, in Malaysia, the white flag has taken on a new meaning. In July 2021, a social media movement encouraged people who had trouble making ends meet to use a white flag to signal(打信号) for help. This was the beginning of the white flag movement.
Like most countries, Malaysia has been hit hard by the COVID-19. Following a lockdown on June 1, 2021, many people couldn’t find work. The local news began reporting stories of people who were being forced to live on a single meal a day. The pressures of lockdown also led to an increase in mental health problems and even suicide(自杀). But help was on the way.
In July, a businesswoman made a Facebook post that encouraged Malaysians who needed aid to raise a white flag outside their home. The post was shared over 20,000 times within 24 hours. People set up groups and started posting photos of foods that they could donate(捐赠) as well as the addresses of those in need.
The movement quickly gained in popularity. When 20 white flags were raised in a fishing village, the local fire department provided them with food and supplies(补给品). A grocery store chain(连锁杂货店) even asked people to report white flags to it so that it could send food to hungry families.

An Extract From The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
At midnight, Tom Sawyer, Joe Harper and Huckleberry Finn met beside the Mississippi River and got onto a raft. They went towards an island, downriver from the town. It was Tom’s idea. The island was covered in forest. The boys built a fire and cooked some bacon Joe had brought. “This is the life for me,” said Tom. The three friends slept beside the fire. Then in the morning, their raft was gone. They didn’t mind — they liked being on the island. But by afternoon, they were bored.

“They’re firing a cannon(大炮),” said Huck. “They do that when someone has drowned (淹死. It makes the body rise to the top. I wonder who it is.”
Tom thought for a moment, and then said, “They’re looking for us!”
So the people back home were worried! They were missing the boys! This made the boys feel important. They wondered what the townspeople were saying about them.
Tom had an idea. Late at night, he swam across the river and made his way to the town. He walked quietly into his house and hid under a bed. He heard his aunt say to Joe’s mother, “He wasn’t a bad boy, really. He had a good heart.” She began to cry.
“My Joe, too,” said Mrs. Harper, also weeping. “Oh, now I’ll never see him again! The funeral (葬礼) on Sunday will be a sad day.”

A holiday is something everyone expects. In my mind, a holiday without homework is an ideal holiday.
During such a holiday, I would be able to arrange my time more freely and do something I am interested in. I would participate in outdoor activities such as swimming and camping instead of having to dance my fingers around on my computer keyboard.
