Welcome to the Painting Competition for Woodlands Students
The International Anti-Drug Day this year is coming soon. In order to raise teenagers’ awareness to fight against drug taking, the City Art Council is going to hold a painting competition for the students in our city. “I have cancer.” Mom said and held me in a tight hug. I could feel her chest shaking as she tried not to cry but failed.
For all of my twenty-four years, my mom had been supportive. Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me. Now I knew it would have to flow the other way.
Mom didn’t stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer, she armed herself with a notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts and medications with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school. “The not-knowing is the worst.” she said.
The operation was successful. The chemo (化疗) was the harder part. I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She rarely complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one. She joked that she could save money on nail polish and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish. “Cancer can take my hair, my nails, my health, my very life. But it can’t take my smile.” Mom said.
Mom learned to share her fears with me, and it formed an even deeper bond between us. Yet I am certain there were fears she didn’t share because she was still protecting me—worries she only shared with Dad. Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer. Mom always said, “When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it, you take away some of its power.”
Mom was one of the lucky ones. She did beat her cancer, though not without scars. From her, I’ve learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it.

Primary school and junior-high school students and their parents across the country have seen some changes since the new school year started on September 1st. Students have less homework, and their parents no longer need to correct the homework of their children. At the same time, the number of after-school tutoring institutions (课外辅导机构) for primary and junior-high school students is reducing. These changes are the results of national guidelines to ease the burden (负担) of excessive (过度的) homework and off-campus tutoring for students during the nine years of compulsory education (义务教育). Known as the “double reduction” policy (双减政策), the guidelines were issued at the end of July, and took effect this semester.
The policy is an important step in China’s boosting of more well-rounded education practices. In addition to providing compulsory education, China is also working to develop an education system that enables young people to create a moral, intellectual, physical and mental grounding. China’s education system had become increasingly exam-oriented (应试教育) in recent decades due to the desire of achieving high scores in high school and the college entrance examination. It contributed to an excessive burden on primary and junior-high school students.
The policy of easing study burden aims to help education recover its essential purpose with schooling as the cornerstone of the system, social education as the supplement and family education as the foundation, so as to better educate talents for the country.
The policy may bring back well-rounded education; however, the motivation to receive and offer exam-oriented learning will last as long as exam scores remain the standard of entry to high schools and colleges. There is still a long way to go for China to change from exam-oriented to well-rounded education.

While the arts can’t stop the COVID-19 virus or the social unrest we see in the world today, they can give us insight into the choices we make when moving through crises and chaos. The arts invite everyone to think in new ways.
We often experience works of art as something that’s pleasing to our senses without a full understanding of the creative effort. Great art often shows us contradictions and crises, and we can learn a great deal from their resolutions (解决). Through our understanding of art, we can gain a deeper understanding of how we might overcome our own challenges. In understanding extremes of contrast, we can see the beauty in art with themes that are not simply pleasing for their magnificent features or qualities.
Beethoven offers a wonderful example of moving artfully through crises and chaos. He composed his Symphony No.9 as his hearing loss became more and more pronounced. The opening of the symphony seems to come out of nowhere, from near silence in the opening to a full expression of what many consider to be the joy of freedom and universal brotherhood with Schiller’s Ode to joy（欢乐颂）. Beethoven appears to have created a work of art that not only freed him from his personal struggles, but one that also speaks to the joy of living together in peace and harmony.
Have a dialogue between the two opposing parts and you will find that they always start out fighting each other until we come to an appreciation of difference—a oneness of the two opposing forces. The arts offer many lessons that can help us gain the knowledge we need to move more confidently in today’ s competitive and uncertain environment. M: Why didn't you ask Jenny She is good at sports. Oh, no, that's right, she was busy at the park. There was a badminton competition.
W: I hope she won a prize. Did you hear about Joe He broke his leg playing football.
M: Oh, no. He won't go swimming with me next weekend!
W: Are you going to the beach If so, I'll come with you-I love it there.

M: Today is Bubble Gum Day. It is the first Friday in February. On this day, kids bring 50 cents to school, and donate it to a good cause. In exchange, they can chew bubble gum in school on this day. Ruth Spiro is a writer, a children’s book author bubble gum fan. She created this day in 2006. Her aim is to create a day where schools can collect money for a charity, without selling things. She says that since its creation, Bubble Gum Day has become a sweet success! Bubble Gum Day was originally established for schools. But, libraries clubs and community groups can and do participate. Even businesses are encouraged to hold a Bubble Gum Day event.
