Passage 1. 科技发明
How do animals recognize (识别) human’s faces This question is at the heart of Chinese American scientist Doris Tsao’s research. Tsao was known as one of the winners of 2018 MacArthur Award (麦克阿瑟奖) —one of the highest academic (学术的) honors in the US. Each year, the MacArthur Foundation chooses twenty to thirty talented people and gives money for their work.
Tsao’s team does some experiments with monkeys. The scientists found out that there are about 200 nerve cells (神经细胞) in the monkeys’ brains. They can help the monkeys to recognize faces. Each cell can recognize a different facial characteristic, such as the shape of our face or the color of our skin. With all of the information, monkeys can build a picture of a person’s face in their minds.
Through their study, the scientist showed us how monkeys “see” human faces in their own minds. They showed the monkeys pictures of some different human faces. At the same time, they recorded the activity of every nerve cell in the monkeys’ brains. Then, they were able to use computer to study this brain activity and finally find out the faces that the monkeys “saw” in their minds.
Although the study was about monkeys, scientists believe that human beings might recognize faces in a similar way. Police could use this technology in the future. They could recreate the face of a bad guy by recording a witness’ (目击证人) brain activity, Tsao told the Daily Mail.

Passage 2 核能知识科普
Nuclear(核)power’s danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word: radiation(辐射).
Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery(神秘)about it, partly because it cannot be found by human senses. It can’t be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can’t detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can’t sense radioactivity without a radiation detector(探测器). But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things.
At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being completely by killing masses(块;团)of cells(细胞)in vital(=very important)organs. But even the lowest level of radiation can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed completely, your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed(畸形)way. They can grow into cancer(癌症). Sometimes this does not show up for many years.
This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim(牺牲者)being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or easy to have serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed(吸收)by its grandparents.
Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.
1 Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery because ________.
A. people can’t feel it B. people know nothing about it
C. nuclear radiation isn’t harmful to people D. people haven’t any detectors
2. What can we know from the passage
A. We can’t detect radioactivity even with modern equipment.
B. Only radiation at very high levels can kill an animal or human being.
C. If a few cells are only damaged, healthy cells will take the place of dead ones.
D. Radiation is harmful no matter what level it is.
3. The word “significant” in paragraph 3 has the similar meaning with ________.
A. important B. meaningful C. harmful D. obvious
4.. Radiation can hurt us in that it can ________.
A. affect the healthy growth of our offspring(后代)
B. damage cells which grow into cancer years later
C. kill large number of cells in main organs so as to cause death immediately
D. all of the above
5.. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing this passage
A. Emphasizing the importance of protection of radiation.
B. Solving the mystery about radiation.

Passage 4 高新科技
Water shortages influence so many lives. The company
Watergen produced a new machine to help solve this problem. The machine, called GENNY, is small enough to be used in a home or office but can produce up to 30 liters of water a day. More importantly, it can produce clean water out of air.
GENNY takes air in and passes it through a filter (过滤器)to remove dust and dirt. The filter is powerful enough to work even in areas with high air pollution. The air then passes through a room where heating and cooling turns steam in the air into water. This water is then passed through several more filters, and minerals are added to make it healthier and better-tasting. Finally, the water is kept in a tank where it is continually recycled to keep it fresh.
The heating and cooling process, called GENius, is far more energy-efficient than other technologies that produce water from air. It produces four to five times more water per kilowatt-hour (千瓦时). Watergen has other products that use this same technology on a larger size, the largest of which can produce up to 5,000 liters of water per day.
As a company, Watergen aims to provide drinking water to the billions of people who don't have safe drinking water at home. Last year Watergen Js large-size products were given to the local government in Brazil, Vietnam and India.
Watergon tries to help the environment by reducing waste caused by plastic bottles. People can put the water from GENNY into reusable bottles so that plastic ones don' t get used and thrown away. It also calls for saving energy. There are even two types of GENNY: one that uses the electrical power supply and another that runs on energy from solar power. Passage 6 冬奥高科技
The Beijing 2022 Winter Games are set to start this February. You probably won’t be able to watch the events in person, but don’t worry, cutting-edge (尖端) technologies will offer you a great game-watching experience.
With the support of 5G and cloud technologies, ordinary viewers will have the chance to enjoy the world’s clearest broadcast technology, 8K broadcast in ultra-high definition (超高清晰度), from TV sets.
Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) Cloud
A solid system for rebroadcasting( 转播)Olympic events is the key to making sure that more people enjoy the top-level competition. Traditionally, rebroadcasting is requiring expensive broadcasting trucks and lots of production directors. But now, by cooperating with OBS, the Organizing Committee has built an intelligent cloud network, which can collect all on-spot ultra-high-definition (超高清晰度) video, edit video materials and transmit them into multi-channel signals suited for TV or Internet video platforms or broadcasting in real time. Broadcasters and producers don’t need to go to the scene and can further enhance(加强) the video by adding graphics (图表) or text remotely, which helps with pandemic prevention efforts. Also, an on-site reporter can now use one small camera or a smartphone to livestream a sports event.
“Free visual angle” technologies
As speed and visual (视觉的) effects are two important characteristics of ice and snow sports, the Beijing 2022 organizers also developed many technologies to give people “immersive” (沉浸式)experiences with 360-degree replay and “free visual angle (自由视角)” technologies. In the Wukesong Sports Center, dozens of cameras are set around the venue (场馆) to shoot competitions from different angles at the same time. Using a phone app, viewers can choose different viewing angles to watch the events. QR codes will be provided for the viewers to better interact and enjoy the events up close.
What’s more, viewers can watch high-definition broadcasts on VR devices. Although they attend the events virtually online, they feel as if they were at the venue.
AI-powered sign language anchor
On Nov 24, CCTV and Baidu AI Cloud announced the launch of CCTV’s first AI sign language anchor (手语主播). The anchor will help cover the Beijing Winter Olympics.
The Baidu AI Cloud uses many technologies such as speech recognition (识别) and machine translation to build a complex and accurate (精确的) sign language translation engine(翻译引擎). This enables the translation of text, sound and video into sign language.
Now, the AI anchor appears as a young woman with a friendly and natural disposition (性情). It can also be shown in other styles such as anime, 2D and 3D. Used by this technology, the AI sign language anchor will help all people(including people with hearing loss) better enjoy the great winter event.

7. Big data 大数据
Big data (数据) is a lot of sets of information that are put together so they can be used by a computer program. The computer program looks for different kinds of answers or patterns in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources, such as information that comes from schools, social media sites, companies, and governments. One set of data can have people's names and addresses. Another set can have what they like, where they go to school, and how much time they spend on the computer.
Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need extra help in class. The teacher can then give certain students more help or support so those students can succeed in panies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.
Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict if a baby who is born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he or she does not get sick. Big data can also be used for bad reasons. It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong.
How can big data be used for good and bad things It is because the computer programs used to look at big data and understand it are written by people. People think a certain way. Because they think a certain way, they build a model of those ideas. These ideas are then used to look at the data. Sometimes, these ideas are helpful for people or businesses. Other times, bad ideas can cause problems for certain groups of people.

Passage 8 科技发明
What are you holding in your hand while you are taking the examination Right. A pen.
Though it is small, the pen has changed the history, improved the trade of countries, recorded events, carried news, and done far more work for human beings than all other tools.
Progress without it would have been almost impossible. The invention of the wheels, the introduction of steam engine (蒸汽机), the use of electricity, all these have changed the lives of millions of people, but the pen has done more. It has taken away mountains, and it has prepared the way for all progress and development of the society.
In the past the pen did all the work if you wanted to keep any writing for some time. The lawyers took up their pens and wrote the law of the country from the days when papyrus (纸莎草纸) was first used. The most famous letters in the world were written with a pen. It was with a pen that the greatest thinkers of all time wrote down their thoughts.
The pen is very utilitarian. We cannot sign a bill or write a letter or buy a house without our pen. An agreement is worthless till our name is written with a pen. The writers encourage the world with it. The students take their examinations with it as well.
Our coming into the world is recorded with a pen. Before we have been at school, our name is written on the name list with a pen. We cannot be married till we have signed. A pen records the important events in our life.
Let us remember that we hold in our hand the most powerful instrument which man owns. The pen is a magic tool. Whenever you use it, enjoy it.

Passage 9. 趣味科普
New Zealand is a beautiful island country in the Pacific Ocean. There, snowy mountains rise high above the sea and grassy hills go across the land for miles. However, if you spend some time walking around the land, you’ll smell something different. Almost 30 million sheep and 10 million cows travel around those green hills and each one of them is farting (放屁).
That may sound like a joke. But scientists aren’t laughing. There are more cows and sheep than people in New Zealand: eight to one. And these animals fart more than 4 million tons of gas every year.
That gas adds to one of the most dangerous problems we face today: global warming (全球变暖). The gas that farm animals produce is called methane (甲烷), a greenhouse gas which can lead to climate(气候) change. But sheep and cows are not the main reason. Most greenhouse gases are produced by factories and cars.
But in New Zealand, farm animals produce almost half the country’s greenhouse gases.
That’s why scientists in New Zealand are working hard to solve the problem. They’ve found medicine that can reduce gas in sheep and cows. But most farm animals in New Zealand walk free. It’s hard to round them up to give them medicine.
There’s also a third plan. Some scientists have put sheep in special scaled cages (密封笼子). They measure the gas that a sheep produces. It helps scientists find that some sheep naturally make less gas than others. When they breed those sheep together, their baby sheep farts less than their cousins.
It’s only a small improvement. But those baby sheep just might make the planet a better place to live.
1. Which statement is TRUE about New Zealand
A. It’s a beautiful place fit for walking around.
B. You will see more cows and sheep than people there.
C. Its farm animals are in danger because of global warming.
D. Its greenhouse gases mostly come from factories and cars.
2. What problem have cows and sheep brought to New Zealand
A. Air pollution. B. Rising sea level.
C. Fewer grassland. D. less land for food.
3 What can the special seal cages help do
A. Stop sheep from farting. B. Reduce sheep’s gas production.
C. Cut down the sheep population. D. Pick out sheep that produces less gas.
4. How does the writer feel about the third plan
A. It might work. B. It will cost too much.
C. It’s easy to carry out. D. It will do harm to sheep.
5. Which part of a newspaper is this passage probably from

Passage 10 高新科技研究
Imagine using your coat to look through the internet, send and receive messages, and even read a map. Yes, you read that correctly—your coat.
It may sound silly, but it’s something scientists are working on. Researchers at Shanghai’s Fudan University have made a new type of cloth that can be used as a digital display (显示屏).
Professor Peng Huisheng and his team have spent 10 years trying to make “digital cloth”. After testing different combinations, they chose two materials that worked: a silver-plated yarn (镀银纱)that can light up and a kind of thread (纺线)that conducts (传导)electricity.
The results have been admirable. It’s not only wearable and foldable, but also washable. After being put through 100 wash-and-dry cycles in a washing machine and folded 10, 000 times, the cloth remained almost unchanged.
Peng believes that the new cloth could be used for many things. For example, it could allow a driver to view a GPS map on their arm while they drive around. It could also help people communicate better if they have language barriers (障碍)or disabilities.
In one test, Peng’s team collected brainwaves from volunteers who had either been playing a game or meditating. The waves were then translated into messages like “anxious” or “relaxed” and shown on the cloth. This could help deaf-mute (聋哑的) people “talk” to each other in the future.
“We hope that new materials will shape next-generation electronic devices by changing the way we interact with them, ”said Peng.
1. The researchers have made a new type of cloth that can be used as a ________.
A. digital camera B. digital display
C. digital method D. digital communication
2. A silver-plated yam and a kind of ________ were chosen to make “digital cloth”.
A. gold B. metal C. steel D. thread
3. The new cloth can allow a driver ________ on their arm when they drive around.
A. to read a GPS map B. to print a GPS map
C. to make a GPS map D. to draw a GPS map
4. The underlined word “meditating” in Paragraph 6 means ________ in Chinese.
A. 争吵 B. 打架 C. 冥想 D. 讨论
5. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE
A. The new cloth remained unchanged after it is washed or folded.

Passage 11 自然现象
You might have seen beautiful rainbows in the sky before. They form when sunlight falls on water drops in the air. But in fact, moonlight can also create rainbows in the same way. They are called “moonbows”. They are similar to rainbows, but they are created by moonlight instead of direct sunlight.
Moonbows are rarer than rainbows. Different weather and astronomical (天文学的)conditions have to be just right for moonbows to be created.
The moon has to be very low in the sky-only 42 degrees from the horizon (地平线). The moon period has to be a full moon or nearly full. The sky must be very dark for a moonbow to be watched clearly-any bright light can obscure it. Water drops must appear in the air in the opposite direction of the moon.
Moonbows appear on the opposite side of the moon and usually look white to the human eye. This is because their colors are not bright enough to be noticed by the human eye. It is possible, however, to view the colors in a moonbow using long exposure (长时间曝光)photography.
Moonbows more often appear in some locations around the world. Most of these locations usually have waterfalls, which create thin fog in the air. Some of these locations are the Yosemite National Park in California and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in Kentucky, US; Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe; and Waimea in Hawaii, US.
Moonbows do really happen. So at a certain time and a certain place, when a moonbow happens to appear, you can’t miss it if you’re right there.
1. According to the first two paragraphs, moonbows are ________.
A. created by sunlight B. much easier to find
C. seen during the day D. more difficult to form
2. Which of the following can be the conditions for a moonbow to form
A. A half moon hangs high in the bright sky.
B. A full moon is 50 degrees from the horizon.
C. A nearly full moon hangs low in the dark sky.
D. Water drops are in the opposite direction of the sun.
3. What does the underlined word “obscure” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. cover B. drop C. connect D. produce
4. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Conditions of moonbows. B. Background of moonbows.
C. Locations of moonbows. D. Development of moonbows.
答案:1. D 2.C 3.A. 4.C
