Still Miles to Go
一、请根据两个提示句进行故事续写,150词左右。
My husband Tom came through the front door with a huge grin on his face. He held his arms wide and announced, “I’m retired!” It was official. After working for the U.S. Postal Service for thirty-three years, Tom could stop setting his alarm for 4:30 a.m. He was free to sleep in. And there would be no more checking the next day’s weather on the evening news.
The first thing we did was move from Illinois to South Carolina. Moving is a lot of work, and unpacking and organizing kept us both busy. We enjoyed exploring our new town. But as time went by, I could tell that Tom was getting bored. He was used to full and busy days, where he was responsible for much more than bringing in the mail or mowing the lawn. He began to pace like a lion, glancing out the windows. I knew what he was searching for. I did the same searching when the children “left the nest” .
“I think I’ll look for a part-time job,” Tom informed me one day. I felt instant relief. The lion would stop his circling, and I could vacuum in peace. We both kept our eyes open for job opportunities. “Something will come along,” I told him confidently. A few days later, something did come along in the shape of a large yellow school bus that we were following down a road. It was 3 p.m., and as our car crept behind, we watched the flashing lights signal each coming stop. The stop sign would pop out, the doors would open, and a child would jump from the high step.
I knew he liked to drive and seemed to savor the times when we had to rent a truck to move something. He had driven us over the mountains to our new home, through driving rainstorms on winding roads. Behind the wheel, he seemed fearless.
“You could drive that bus,” I remarked casually to Tom.
The very next morning, he was given a school bus and a route sheet officially.

My husband Tom came with a huge grin on his face. He held his arms wide and announced his retirement. After working for the Postal Service for thirty-three years, Tom could stop setting his alarm for 4:30 a.m. He was free to sleep in. And there would be no more checking the weather.
Tom had enough years in to qualify for retirement at age fifty-five. First we moved. Moving is a lot of work, which kept us busy. We enjoyed exploring our new town. But as time went by, I could tell that Tom was getting bored. He began to pace like a lion, glancing out the windows. I knew what he was searching for. I did the same searching when the children “left the nest”.
“I think I’ll look for a part-time job,” Tom informed me one day. I felt instant relief. The lion would cease circling, and I could vacuum in peace. We kept our eyes open for job opportunities. “Something will come along,” I told him confidently. A few days later, something did come. It was 3 p.m., and as our car crept behind a school bus, we watched the flashing lights signal each impending stop.
“You could drive that bus,” I remarked casually. I knew he liked to drive and seemed to savor the times when we rented a truck to move something. He had driven us over the mountains through driving rainstorms on winding roads. Behind the wheel, he seemed fearless.
“Of course, I could drive that bus,” he answered back. “But could I drive it with forty-five children bouncing and yelling in the back ” We both laughed at the thought. As we finally passed the bus, I glanced in. “They’re not all bouncing. Most of them are sitting quietly.” I didn’t mention the child with his face pressed against the window. The one with the runny nose.
That bus became the bumblebee that buzzed around me. I pictured Tom happily going off to work again, climbing behind that giantsteering wheel and setting off on his daily route. My enthusiasm must have intrigued Tom because I overheard him on the phone with the transportation department.
He was hired, providing he could pass the physical performance test and acquire the school bus driver’s license. This was no easy task, and he spent hours studying manuals and learning to maneuver the bus down narrow streets and through heavy traffic. He had to train for evacuation, dragging a heavy load down the bus aisle and jumping from the emergency door.
He was proud he got his driver’s license. The very next morning, he was given a bus and a route sheet. I’m sure he was nervous, but Tom will accept any mission. Driving the bus turned out rewarding, and Tom is thriving in his new role. I think he likes being the “big guy” on the road. He now knows every street in our town. He’s back to checking the weather, and setting the alarm again.
He is now “Mr. Tom” to his riders and their parents. I hear he is quite amazing. He greets the children with high-fives and compliments. He waits patiently while one high-schooler performs a security routine. He listens carefully to the ones who have speaking issues, and he tucks blankets around the girl in the wheelchair He wipes the runny noses and wishes the kids a good day when they arrive.
When the pre-K children are dismissed and climb aboard, he straps them into car seats while they reach for his glasses and tug on his name badge. Then he leads them in a quick and fun activity. “Reach your hands up high. Now touch your ears. Touch your knees,” he instructs. Then comes their favorite part, where they get to shout after hours spent in their quiet classroom. “Goodbye, teachers!” yells Mr. Tom. The little ones repeat it. “Goodbye, school!” Again, they repeat, joyfully. Mr. Tom then yells out the last two lines, and the children laugh and repeat at the top of their lungs.
He has been driving the bus for seven years. He gets lots of notes from grateful parents, thanking him for keeping their child safe and well-cared for. Sometimes, while I’m out running errands, a school bus passes me. It always warms my heart when the driver is the one I’m hoping to see and I catch the kiss he blows me.

Hold a friend’s hand through times of trial, Let her find love through a hug and a smile; But also know when it is time to let go— For each and every one of us must learn to grow.
~Sharon A. Heilbrunn
When I first met Molly, she instantly became my best friend. We enjoyed the same things, laughed at the same jokes and even had the same love for sunflowers.
It seemed like we had found each other at the right time. Both of us had been in different groups of friends that didn’t get along or we didn’t feel comfortable in. We were thrilled to find each other.
Our friendship grew very strong. Our families became friends, and everyone knew that wherever you found Molly, you found me, and vice versa. In fifth grade, we were not in the same class, but at lunch we both sat in nearby assigned seats and turned around to talk to each other. The lunch ladies did not like this. We were always blocking the aisle, talking too loudly and not eating our lunches, but we didn’t care. The teachers knew we were best friends, but we were also a disturbance. Our big mouths got us into trouble, and we were warned that we would never be in the same classes again if we kept this up.
That summer, Molly and her brother were at my house quite often. My mom took care of them while their mom worked. We went swimming, played outside and practiced playing our flutes. We bought best-friend charms and made sure to wear them as often as possible.
Summer went by very quickly, and middle school began. As the teachers had warned us, we were not in the same classes. We still talked on the phone, went over to each other’s houses, sang in choir and practiced our flutes together in band. Nothing could destroy this friendship.
Seventh grade started and, again, we were not in the same classes and could not sit near each other at lunch. It seemed as if we were being put to a test. We both made new friends. Molly started to hang out with a new group of people and was growing very popular.
We spent less time together, and we rarely talked on the phone. At school, I would try to talk to her, but she would just ignore me. When we did take a minute to talk, one of her more popular friends would come up and Molly would just walk away with her, leaving me in the dust. It hurt.
I was so confused. I’m sure she didn’t know at the time how badly I felt, but how could I talk to her if she wouldn’t listen I began to hang around with my new friends, but it just wasn’t the same. I met Erin, who was also a friend of Molly’s. She was in the same situation I was with Molly. She and Molly had been close friends, and lately Molly had been treating Erin the same way as me. We decided to talk to her.
The phone call was not easy. Talking and saying how I felt was difficult. I was so afraid that I would hurt her feelings and make her angry. It was funny, though—when it was just the two of us talking on the phone, we were friends again. It was the old Molly.
I explained how I was feeling, and she did, too. I realized I was not the only one hurting. She was alone without me to talk to. What was she supposed to do, not make new friends I didn’t think about this before, but she was feeling left out by me and my new friends. There were times when I didn’t even notice I was ignoring her. We must have talked for a long time, because once we were finished I had used a handful of tissues for my tears, and felt as if I had lifted a heavy weight off my heart. We both decided that we wanted to be with our new friends, but we would never forget the fun and friendship we had shared with each other.
Today, I look back on all of this and smile. Molly and I are finally in the same classes, and you know what We still get in trouble for talking too loudly. Molly is not my best friend anymore, but more like my sister. We still enjoy the same things, laugh at the same jokes and share the same love for sunflowers. I will never forget her. Molly taught me something very important. She taught me that things change, people change, and it doesn’t mean you forget the past or try to cover it up. It simply means that you move on, and treasure all the memories.
