My husband and I both grew up playing sports. So we weren’t surprised when our little daughter, Kennedi showed early athletic promise. She could easily outrun other kids, while playing with them on the playground.
By the time Kennedi started primary school, we signed her up for track training. Slowly but surely, track training took over our lives. We gave up taking vacations so our girl wouldn’t miss any practices. I even stopped Kennedi from swimming with her friends, for I thought she would waste the energy needed for competition. We didn’t ask Kennedi if that was what she wanted. Of course she did! She kept winning, and every kid liked to win.
When Kennedi was 13 years old, at a national sports event, she suddenly fell down and ended up lying on the track, screaming in pain. A doctor said, “She worked out too hard that the thick tissue (软组织) in her knee was torn. She might not run as fast as before.” The doctor kept talking, but I had a hard time following the words. My feelings were mixed. Was I too strict with my daughter Was I partly to blame for her injury Then I realized that my kid needed a mom more than a coach.
To our great relief, after a year-long’s strict medical examination, Kennedi almost recovered. She even joined the volleyball team at her high school. And we were gradually back to a busy family schedule. But not everything is the same. We seldom miss vacations anymore, even if that means missing practice. And I’m learning to believe that if my daughter decides not to run track in college, that only means life has something even more wonderful in store.

Many animals climb, but few do it as well as the spider (蜘蛛). These eight-legged animals climb walls and run on ceilings (天花板), sticking in seemingly impossible ways. Now researchers have turned up surprising facts on how spiders can stick to almost any surface. The structure of tiny hairs at the end of the spider’s legs likely helps the creature hang on.
Clemens Schaber is a zoologist at the University of Kiel in Germany. His new finding, published June 11 in Frontiers in Mechanical Engineering, was part of his research on how spiders move. “Stickiness is an important part of that,” he says.
Spiders don’t have a sticky liquid on their feet. Instead, they use “dry” stickiness. Animals that use dry stickiness can stick and unstick to surfaces easily. Scientists have long studied the hairs on a spider’s foot to understand how they do it. At the end of a spider’s leg, rough fibers divide into smaller hairs. At the ends of these hairs are small, flat structures that look like spatulas(刮刀). When the hairs touch something, they form bonds with atoms at the surface and stick.
Schaber wanted to know more about why they worked so well. He and his colleagues chose to study this in Cupiennius salei spiders, living in South and Central America. Schaber expected that all the hairs would point in the same direction, more or less. “But it wasn’t like that,” he says, “The ends of the hairs were all a little bit different in direction,” Schaber says. They found that some hairs had the strongest stickiness at one angle. Others worked best at other angles. Concludes Schaber, this mix of angles and stickiness may help the spider stick no matter how it touches a wall.
Schaber says his lab tested another application. The scientists covered a glove in tiny spider hairs in different directions. That glove could support the weight of a person sticking anywhere. With such a glove, anyone could develop the superpowers of a spider.

I do not agree with the statement that advertising is not good for us as consumers (消费者). 32
Of course, this is only true if advertisers don’t give false information in their advertisements or include their advertising costs in the prices of their products.
Through advertisements, consumers can know about new products in the market. They can be food, or even more expensive items like cars and houses. This gives consumers more choices. From a variety of brands, they choose the brand that suits them or the one that they like. 33
34 This is good, for it maintains or even improves the quality of the products. If there is no competition, the quality of the products may drop. Through advertisements, consumers also come to know about the offers, special discounts, or free gifts given during sales.
Advertising does have a positive role to play in modern society, helping us choose between competing goods. 35 For example, telephones are used as cameras and music players. Others try to compete on price, helping us seek out the cheapest or best value products.
Over the years, advertising has developed into a major industry. 36 One cannot walk down the street, ride on a bus, watch television or read emails without seeing advertisements.
The fact is that the presence of some unethical advertisers does not mean that the whole basket is bad. Generally, advertisements do more good than harm.
It has also become a type of culture.
It makes us plan to buy food, clothes and gifts in a healthy way.
In most cases, advertising does not just make us go shopping.
If not for advertisements, they will not know about the different brands.
Many advertisements are drawing our attention to products with new features (特征).
Moreover, due to advertisements, competition exists when companies advertise.
G. In fact, I think that advertisements are necessary and can be good for consumers.

概要写作 (满分15分)
阅读短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
A walk around any park will bring you face to face with people doing exercises in early mornings. Nowadays the young and the old are caring more about their health and are spending more time in gyms after work. Doing exercises benefits them in many ways.
The most obvious is the physical benefit. Sports make us fitter, quicker and stronger. Physical training is helpful to our health. Scientific studies have shown that regular exercise is a powerful tool against illness and aging. Indeed, many diseases are the results of lack of physical exercise.
The benefits do not end there. Sport is a character builder. While doing sports, we may feel exhausted, but it trains our willpower. To win a game we have to be determined. To go beyond others or ourselves, we have to push our limits and overcome all difficulties. We come to know that there is always room for improvement. Then, failures are also common in sport. We learn to adapt to new conditions, to judge our weaknesses and to gather strength from our defeats. The fast-moving nature of most sports also helps us to become quick-minded.
By joining in team sports, we learn to work with others. In sport fields, one person’s goal takes second place to a team goal. Every team member is working towards a common goal. To achieve it, cooperation is a must. Members must work as a team and achieve what they want most even if that means someone has to give up his or her interests for the team. For example, a cyclist may take the leading position for half of the game and then drop out so as to ensure the victory of their team.
Like art, sport is a good way to train ourselves psychologically as well as physically. So, why not do sports and experience the great effects of sport
