第一节
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Located at Europe's biggest water park, the Galaxy Erding in South Germany, the world's first VR water slide takes the exciting experience to a whole new level by offering thrill-seekers the choice of three attractive worlds— Space, Sky, or Snow. By simply wearing a headset, riders can slide through a magical alien world, follow beautiful butterflies around floating islands or put themselves in a white winter wonderland. To make the experience even more heart-stopping, the 160-metre-long ride that lasts about 35 seconds has two uphill tracks that provide a roller-coaster-like experience.
While the tire slide, which has been successfully tested by almost 10, 000 park goers since it opened in February 2018, is impressive, the technology behind it, developed by California startup Ballast is even more so. The specially-created waterproof headsets can be worn in water up to a few metres deep, without harming the delicate Samsung Galaxy S8 mobile devices that run the custom software for the VR experiences. The headsets also charge wirelessly (无线地) , allowing park operators to swap out sets throughout the day.
The biggest challenge the company faced, however, was providing a suitable VR experience for everyone. That's because unlike roller coasters, where the speed is fixed for all riders, water slide speeds vary depending on the weight of the person. To overcome the issue, Ballast fixed smart sensors (传感器)in important areas along the: slide to keep track of the riders progress at all times. The information, conveyed through the headset, allows the custom software to adjust his or her location within the virtual world accordingly, making for a smooth, seasickness free ride for all.
Though Ballast is thrilled at Space Glider's success, the company has bigger ambitions. They want to create an experience where guests will be able to swim underwater surrounded by virtual dolphins, whales, and even sharks, without wearing the heavy headsets!

Jon Pedley is making a big change. He is giving up his life as a successful businessman for life of helping others. He is trading his beautiful farmhouse in England for life in a mud hut in Uganda, East Africa.
Pedley admits that he has not always led a very positive life. At times he drank too much and got in trouble with the law. "I've always put the pursuit (追求) of money in front of everything else. As long as I was all right, I didn't care who I was hurting," says Pedley.
But a visit to Uganda in 2007 gave Pedley a new outlook (态度) on life. He was amazed at what he saw and how much the people there appreciated the work he was doing. "I worked there for a few days and these people who have nothing thanked me by giving me bags of potatoes, which are a fortune for them," he said.
Now Pedley is selling his business, his $1.5 million farmhouse, and his expensive car—and moving into a hut made of mud and boards in a small Ugandan village. The teens will live in mud huts and help to build water, health and education facilities(设备) for kids in Kigazi, many of whom have lost their parents due to poverty or disease. Gretchen Altman is smiling, leaning back casually, a cup of coffee in hand—Hills Bros. Coffee, to be precise. It looks like a casual shot, but if you hit like, leave a comment, and tag a friend, you can get three different cups of coffee, for free.
Altman is part of a growing trend of "micro-influencers". She has a small following—around 6,000 on Instagram. She charges $300 to $800 to promote something. She does some posts in exchange for free goods, as long as their stuff she believes in.
As a micro-influencer she has a much closer relationship with her followers than a big social media star. "I'm just living a normal life and people relate to that," she says. "They just feel like I'm a friend of theirs."
But it worries consumer rights groups. Several recent studies have found that young audiences are largely unable to understand when something is sponsored content.
In some cases, it's clear. When a big star takes to social media to advertise Coca-Cola, for example, the assumption is that he or she is probably getting paid to do so. And the posts are clearly labelled as ads, with the caption "advertisement" or "sponsored content".
But what happens when an ordinary person with just several thousand followers takes to social media to praise the virtues of a product The motivations are not so definite. The problem with these social media posts is that you don't know whether it's an ad or not.
Altman is diligent in using those hashtags. She loves what she does and sees it as a business, but she doesn't necessarily want to be a social media celebrity.
"With social media being so integrated into our everyday lives, we have this unique opportunity that I don't think anyone has ever had before where we can each be our own brand," Altman says.
1.What does a micro-influencer do according to the passage
A.Give enough likes. B.Post to promote sales.
C.Recommend some comments. D.Design advertisements.
2.What makes consumer rights groups feel worried
A.Sponsored content.
B.Ads with captions on posts.
C.The unclear motivations of the posts.
D.The increasingly growing number of audiences.
3.How does Gretchen Altman feel about being a micro-influencer
A.Annoyed. B.Delighted. C.Ambitious. D.Depressed.
4.Which of the following can be the best title
A.Instagram Advertising: Do You Know It When You See It
B.To Be a Micro-influencer or to Be a Big Star
C.We Can Each Be Our Own Top Brand
D.Hills Bros. Coffee, Your Coffee

Earthquakes usually happen on the edges of large sections of the Earth's plates. These plates slowly move over a long period of time. Sometimes the edges, which are called fault lines, can get stuck, but the plates keep moving. Pressure slowly starts to build up where the edges are stuck and, once the pressure gets strong enough, the plates will suddenly move causing an earthquake.
Generally before and after a large earthquake there will be smaller earthquakes. The ones that happen before are called foreshocks. The ones that happen after are called aftershocks. Scientists don't really know if an earthquake is a foreshock until the bigger earthquake occurs.
Shock waves from an earthquake that travel through the ground are called seismic waves(地震波). They are most powerful at the center of the earthquake, but they travel through much of the earth and back to the surface. They move quickly at 20 times the speed of sound.
Scientists use seismic waves to measure how big an earthquake is. They use a device called a seismograph(地震仪) to measure the size of the waves. The size of the waves is called the magnitude.
To tell the strength of an earthquake scientists use a scale called the Moment Magnitude Scale or MMS (it used to be called the Richter scale). The larger the number on the MMS, the larger the earthquake. You usually won't even notice an earthquake unless it measures at least a 3 on the MMS. Here are some examples of what may happen depending on the scale:
4.0—It could shake your houses as if a large truck were passing close by. Some people may not notice.
5.0—If you are in a car, it may shake. Glasses and dishes may rattle. Windows may break.
6.0—Items will fall off shelves. Walls in some houses may crack and windows break.
7.0—Weaker buildings will collapse and cracks will occur in bridges and on the street.
8.0—Many buildings and bridges fall down. Large cracks in the earth.
9.0 and up—Whole cities flattened and large-scale damage.
1. If a 5.0-magnitude earthquake hit your area, what might happen
A. Your house might shake violently. B. People might feel no shaking.
C. The family photo may fall off the wall. D. There might be cracks everywhere on the street.
2. What does the author mean by saying the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2
A. It's still hard to tell foreshocks from main earthquakes.
B. Scientists can't exactly measure the strength of an earthquake.
C. People may ignore foreshocks when an earthquake is not so strong.
D. The earthquake won't cause any damage unless it reaches 9.0 MMS.
3. The writer explains the concepts concerning the earthquake by _____.
A. listing examples B. giving explanations
C. making comparisons D. offering data
4. The passage is written mainly to _____.
A. enrich people's knowledge of self-rescue in disasters
B. stress the importance of earthquake rescue
C. issue early warnings before an earthquake
D. present facts about the earthquake

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My family had the tradition to sit down by the kitchen table every Saturday night to count out the money Dad had brought home.
"These are for the rent, and these for the groceries," Mum counted out and divided the big silver pieces.
"I'll need a notebook." That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me.
After Mum put one or two coins to the side for the notebook, she said that was all we needed to buy for the week and we all relaxed a little. We didn't have to go downtown and draw money out of Mum's bank account, which could always give us such a warm and secure feeling for having enough to afford the life.
When Nels graduated from grammar school, he needed some money for high school. We sat by the table and I offered my "Little Bank" which was used for sudden emergencies such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to see a doctor. I laid the box carefully in front of Mum. After counting out the money in the little bank and finding there was not enough, we all agreed not to go to the bank but to find some ways.
Nels volunteered to work in Dillon's grocery after school and Dad said he would give up smoking. Now there was enough money. We felt relieved.
So many things came out of the little bank that year: Christine's dress for the school play, Nels' operation...Whatever happened, we always knew we still had the little bank to depend on. We never used her bank account.
That was twenty years ago.
Last year, I sold my first story. When the money came, I thought of Mum's bank account.
