Do you have one of those books The one you can’t remember the author of but the story never quite leaves your mind The Island Keeper is one of those books for me. It is now one of just a few that I’ve been able to identify again, and luckily my library still had an old 1981 copy.
When I read the book as a young teenager, I still remember being unable to understand it well and thinking that this book was very much about fat shaming.
Now, rereading it again after all these years, what also still comes through is the way that 16-year-old Cleo slowly becomes strong and independent. And that, I think, is why this story was stuck somewhere in the back of my mind for the past thirty or so years.
Initially (起初) planning to spend three days on the island her father owns in Canada, Cleo runs away from her distant father and controlling grandmother. Deep in sadness over the loss of her younger sister and her mother’s death, she feels a need to escape and has a step by step plan.
What starts as three days slowly becomes a summer, as she finds a cave and figures out how to survive. A storm, however, traps her on the island and she is forced to go to extreme measures to survive into winter.
Then she saves herself. And I rather like her grandmother’s reaction to Cleo’s weight loss. And she is rather at a loss for the words over the changes in her granddaughter’s physical appearance.
Finding a book I might never identify has been a joy. Each time I am able to identify a book like this, it brings back memories, but my reading of it brings new, and I hope deeper, insight.
21. What impresses “me” most in the story
A. Beauty of the island. B. Cleo’s growth in personality.
C. Grandmother’s reaction to her return. D. Cleo’s sadness for the loss of her family.
22. Which words can best describe Cleo’s life on the island
A. Tough and long. B. Boring and short. C. Dangerous but exciting. D. Challenging but colorful.
23. What is the text
A. A news report. B. A travel journal. C. A book review. D. A research article.

When the COVID-19 pandemic made face masks an everyday necessity, Japanese company Donut Robotics took the opportunity and created a smart mask — a high-tech upgrade to standard face coverings, designed to make communication and social distancing easier. Connected to an app, the smart mask can record the information it accepts in a written form, make the wearer’s voice louder, and translate speech into eight different languages.
Donut Robotics first developed the translation software for a robot called Cinnamon — but when the pandemic hit, the robot project was put off. That was when the team’s engineers came up with the idea to use their software in a face mask. Donut Robotics was co-founded by Taisuke no and Takafumi Okabe, aiming to change the world with small and mobile communication robots. They applied the initiative to provide services for visitors at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. Cinnamon robot — designed to provide tourists with useful information — was one of four translation robot prototypes selected by the project.
But earlier this year, COVID-19 hit Asia and the airport project grounded to a halt. “We were running short of money and wondering how to keep the company going,” says Ono. The team sought a solution and came up with the idea to adapt its software for a product that would sell well in the pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in face mask sales. Seeing an opportunity to make money with their translation technology, Donut Robotics launched a fundraiser on Japanese crowdfunding platform Fundinno in June. They raised $265, 000 in 37 minutes. “It was very surprising,” he says, “because it would usually take three or four months to get that kind of money.”
Ono says the first wave of supply is expected to take place in Japan, with 5,000 to 10,000 masks available by December, priced at $40 to $50 each. Donut Robotics will not expand overseas until April 20.
24. What is special about the smart mask
A. It can process languages. B. It uses a loudspeaker.
C. It is created for foreigners. D. It is popular in Japan.
25. Which word can replace the underlined words “grounded to a halt” in paragraph 3
A. Launched. B. Improved. C. Stopped. D. Succeeded.
26. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Japan’s mask export trade. B. The benefits of the smart mask.
C. Production of masks in Japan. D. The future of the smart mask.
C
“There’s nothing in the world so discouraging as money,” a character voices gloomily (沮丧) in Antigone, but maybe he didn’t know how to use his cash. If we spend it right, a research suggests, money can, in fact, buy happiness.
According to one often-repeated rule of thumb (拇指), spending on experiences rather than objects makes us happiest. When asked to reflect on a buying, people who described experiential ones—travel, say, or concerts—were much happier than those who described material ones. A new table is easier to get used to than a trip to Chile.
Not all experiences are equally worthwhile, however. Study shows that it’s not so much that doing things makes us happier than having things—it’s that we like doing things with people. This is particularly true for extroverts They got significantly happier after shopping with others, no matter what they bought.
University of Cambridge researchers joined with a bank to analyze the relationship between customers’ spending habits, personality, and happiness. They found that outgoing people splurged (挥霍) on restaurants and entertainment, while self-controlled types shelled out for fitness and insurance. And those whose spending fit their personality were happier than those who spent against type. In one case, extroverts and introverts (性格内向的人) received vouchers (代金券) for either a bar or a bookstore. Extroverts were happier when forced to spend money at the bar, while introverts were happier spending at the bookstore. And when people were assigned to buy goodies for either a hospitalized child or themselves, those who bought treats for a sick child reported more positive feelings. The effect was the same in a rich country (Canada) as in a poor one (South Africa).
So how do you turn cash into fun First, figure out whether you’re an extrovert or an introvert. Then, head to a bar, bookstore, or hospital with a Canadian. There must be a joke in there somewhere.
27. Why does the author mention a character in Antigone
A. To introduce the topic. B. To state the background.
C. To tell the importance of money. D. To explain the meaning of money.
28. What may make people happier according to the rule of thumb
A. Buying a new table. B. Shopping online at home.
C. Receiving presents from parents. D. Attending a concert with friends.
29. What do we know about the study of the researchers in Cambridge
A. Extroverts like spending on fitness. B. Introverts are happy to spend at a bar.
C. One feels happy to delight a sick child. D. People’s spending style depends on their income.
30. What’s the best title for the text
A. Where to Spend Money B. How to Buy Happiness
C. Why Happiness Is Important D. Who Are Happier, Extroverts or Introverts

21 What impresses “me” most in the story
A. Beauty of the island. B. Cleo’s growth in personality.
C. Grandmother’s reaction to her return. D. Cleo’s sadness for the loss of her family.
22. Which words can best describe Cleo’s life on the island
A. Tough and long. B. Boring and short. C. Dangerous but exciting. D. Challenging but colorful.
23. What is the text
A. A news report. B. A travel journal. C. A book review. D. A research article.
B 22. A 23. C

A 25. C 26. D

Start off by going to bed 15 minutes before your usual turn-in time and setting your alarm the same number of minutes earlier the next day. Gradually reset your sleep cycle until you get to your desired wake-up time.(也就是说,你需要早睡早起。
根据上文“Before you even open your eyes, stretch every extremity for 15 seconds. Lift your arm and begin by stretching each fingers, next your hand, and then your arm.(在你睁开眼睛之前,伸展四肢15秒。抬起你的手臂,伸展每一个手指,接着是你的手,然后是你的手臂)”以及后文“End with a neck and back stretch that gets you out of bed. By doing this, you will increase the flow of blood through your system, providing your tissues with extra oxygen.(最后伸展脖子和背部,让你起床。通过这样做,你会增加血液在你身体系统中的流动,为你的组织提供额外的氧气)”可知,上文提到要伸展四肢,且提到了伸展手臂,故本句是在说明伸展下肢,故C选项“继续练习你的脚趾、脚和腿”符合语境,故选C。

【35题详解】
根据后文“But if you can get yourself into the habit, exercising in the morning can give you energy to jump-start your day.(但是如果你能养成这样的习惯,早上锻炼可以给你能量开始新的一天)”可知,本句是在建议早期锻炼,G选项中jogging early对应后文中exercising in the morning。

根据短语“the solution to sth.” 故填to。
(access)
It is highly important to make sure that _____________________________________________________.
【答案】everyone has access to the Internet
have access to sth. “每个人都能使用互联网”,主语为everyone,谓语用第三人称单数形式,故译为has access to the Internet。故填everyone has access to the Internet。
___________________________________, Whitacre said that it was like seeing color for the first time.
Moved(touched) by this(the) music
Moved(Touched) by this(the) music。
_____________________________________________________, Dr Lin opened a private clinic.
Thinking of all the people (that are) still in need of help
表示“想到”短语为think of,与逻辑主语Dr Lin是主动关系,think of用现在分词作状语;表示“所有仍需要帮助的人”可以用定语从句表达,一般现在时,that are still in need of help修饰先行词all the people,关系代词that在从句中做主语,也可用介词短语in need of help作定语修饰名词短语all the people。 Thinking of all the people (that are) still in need of help。
Historically, Chinese immigrants _____________________________________________________.
【答案】settled in San Francisco during the railway construction and gold rush period.
对比中英文句子可知,空格处意为“在铁路建筑和淘金热时期就居住在旧金山”,“在铁路建筑和淘金热时期”是during the railway construction and gold rush period,“居住在旧金山”用一般过去时,描述过去的事情,是settled in San Francisco,因此空格处是settled in San Francisco during the railway construction and gold rush period。故填settled in San Francisco during the railway construction and gold rush period.
(to do 做定语)
China has become the third country in the world _____________________________________________________.
【答案】to send humans into space independently.
故填to send humans into space independently。
