Last summer, Katie Steller pulled off the freeway on her way to work in Minneapolis. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. Up to now, Steller has given 30 or so such haircuts around the city to people with little influence, and she is strongly aware of the power of her cleanup job.
As a teen, she suffered from a severe disease, causing her hair to get thinned, so her mother arranged for Steller’s first professional haircut. “To sit down and have somebody look at me and talk to me like a person and not just an illness, it helped me feel cared about and less alone,” she says. After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own barbershop so she could help people feel the way she’d felt that day. Not long after finishing cosmetology (美容术) school in 2009, she began what she now calls her Red Chair Project, reaching out to people on the streets. Her aim was that by doing some kind acts, others would be inspired to spread their own.
“Part of what broke my heart was just how lonely people looked,” she said. “I thought maybe I’d go around and ask if people want free haircuts. I can’t fix their problems, but maybe I can help them feel less alone for a moment.”
It all began with a belief in simple acts of kindness, such as a free haircut. “The way you show up in the world matters,” said Steller. “You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give them.”

For people in the Netherlands, April 27 is the date of the biggest party of the year — and an excuse to dress all in orange.
The King’s Day celebrates the birthday of King Willem-Alexander, the current king of the Netherlands. It is the country’s national day, and its people take their task of enjoying themselves very seriously.
There is even a special word in Dutch for the crazy events that happen during the festival: “oranjegekte”, which means “orange madness”. The color is special to Dutch people because it’s the color of their country’s royal family.
So what do people do to celebrate The go-to food is herring (鲱鱼). The fish stored in salty water and eaten with onions and pickles (腌菜) can be found at one of the many fish shops around the country.
On the day, people wear as much orange as possible. Everyone wears huge orange hats, orange dresses and fake orange hair. Even pets are dressed up in orange clothes to celebrate.
The King’s Day is a day of shopping too, especially in the Netherlands’ capital city. “As a city built on trade, Amsterdam loves to bargain,” CNN explained. “The free market gives everyone the chance to sell their second-hand things on the streets and parks of Amsterdam, creating one of the world’s largest flea markets.”
Dutch people are known around the world for being laid-back and sometimes a little crazy. And the Netherlands’ King’s Day celebrations certainly show off this side of its pare it to the birthdays of other countries’ kings and queens. In the UK, for example, Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday isn’t usually celebrated, except for special birthdays like her 90th last year. Many people don’t even know when her birthday is. In the Netherlands, however, the king or queen’s birthday has long been a national excuse for a lighthearted day of orange fun.

Sleep plays an important part in repairing the body and keeping us healthy, but with all of the demands of modem living, getting a good night's sleep can be a challenge. Using electronic products such as computers and smartphones has been considered to disturb sleep because of the blue light given off by their LED displays. Yet, new research has shown that screen time alone may not be as harmful as we thought before.
Scientists at the University of Manchester measured the impact of colored light on the sleep patterns of mice to learn more about how different colors act on the body. They said that twilight (暮色) could provide a physical signal to tell you when to sleep. So, using brighter，warmer lights in the day and cooler lights in the evening could be better for people's health.
“Melanopsin (黑视蛋白) makes people easily feel the difference of brightness. Researchers try to change the impacts of light on sleep by adjusting the brightness signals identified by melanopsin,” said Dr Tim Brown, a senior lecturer at the School of Medical Sciences and one of the study's authors.“So not being exposed to blue light and staring at your electronic products for a long time could really help adjust your sleep.”
However, reducing brightness may be more helpful than simply controlling the amount of blue light. And blue light remover that warms up the screens of computers or smartphones by increasing yellow light could actually be harmful to sleep. Harvard Medical School links exposure (接触) to blue light at night to cancer and heart disease. The health warnings about blue light run deeper than disturbed sleep. Though sunlight is the main source of blue light, the way we stare at computers and smartphones for long periods gives cause for concern.

A wild Siberian tiger that appeared in a village in Mishan, Northeast China's Heilongjiang province, and hurt a villager has been caught and sent to the China Hengdaohezi Feline(猫科的) Breeding Center in Hengdaohezi township of Mudanjiang city, Science and Technology Daily reported on Saturday.
At about 6 am on Friday, April 23, 2021, local police received a report that a tiger was found in a residential house that was no longer used in Linhu village in Mishan and had hurt a female villager working at the farmland. A group of police officers immediately arrived at the village to secure the scene and evacuate(疏散) the crowd.
Soon after getting the news, wildlife experts and Cui Yan, an expert from the Heilongjiang Endangered Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, set out from Yichun for the village. After arriving at about 7 pm, the experts successfully caught the tiger into a cage by using an anesthetic(麻醉剂).
“If we find a wild Siberian tiger in the wild, we just drive it into the mountains,” Cui told Science and Technology Daily. “But this tiger wandered away from where it was supposed to be into the village and might hurt more people, so we had to catch it.” “It was estimated to weigh over 200 kilograms,” he said “We strictly followed anesthetic procedure and finally caught it successfully.” “The tiger has no injury and can move quickly,” Cui said. “We judged that it was not from neighboring Russia because it wasn't wearing a collar. It may have come from the nearby administrative region of the China Tiger and Leopard National Park.”
Experts have collected the blood of the tiger for DNA provenance(出处) identification. On Saturday at noon, the tiger was transported to the China Hengdaohezi Feline Breeding Center for medical examination and health monitoring.
The injured villager had to undergo surgery at Mishan People's Hospital on Friday.
“She suffered some muscle damage and now is in stable condition,” said a nurse from the hospital.
