In 1810,during his first Grand Tour of Europe,Byron carved his name into a column base of the Temple of Poseidon on the Aegean coast.Although Byron himself might not have actually written the name that is left there, the story has become part of the history of the monument, searched for by his admirers among the hundreds of other names carved all over the temple.
Modern graffiti, however,is met with a very different reaction. In 2014 a Russian tourist was fined ?20,000 for carving a large " K " on a wall of the Colosseum in Rome, the fifth such incident that year.
What is the thinking behind such acts? Are tourists aiming for ill fame to become part of the monument's history?Or is it simply part of the experience of visiting the site? And,further, why is historical graffiti, which was equally destructive, considered historic heritages? The motives behind them are, after all, probably the same, however, graffiti comes to tell us about lives and moments that might otherwise have been lost.
The earliest graffiti of a person's name on a monument has been identified by the historian Lionel Casson in a cave at Wadi Hammamat in Egypt in 2000 BC.The name of Hena is cut into the sandstone alongside a list of his achievements. In ancient Greece, too, stoas (柱廊) were the meeting places of philosophers and the places for school boys' lessons. We therefore often see alphabets and Homeric poems written on their walls.
And it is not just monuments and buildings:Miltiades,a general from the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC,carved his name into the helmet he wore.In the Athens, too,a Spartan shield (盾) was found with words noting that the Athenians captured it during the Battle in 425 BC.Without such graffiti, the objects would still be impressive, but far less useful for historians,as their writing provides an exact original place.
In the21st century, however, with the rapid increase in tourism,if everyone decided to leave their mark, these sites would be irretrievable (不可挽回地) destroyed.Perhaps Beijing's controversial new free graffiti zones on certain sections of the Great Wall of China will satisfy the desire to carve our own piece of history into the limited resource of the monument, though it seems unlikely that it will easily be contained to one area.Regardless,it is important that we protect these monuments — and the graffiti that some of them already contain.
Why is Baron's carving his name into the column base mentioned in the first paragraph? ______
A. To introduce the related topic.
B. To attract more people to copy him.
C. To show his admirers to search.
D. To become part of the story of the monument.
What can we infer from the passage? ______
A. It was actually Byron that wrote and carved his name there.
B. It was the fifth time that the Russian tourist had been fined that year.
C. Ancient graffiti was carved more than on monuments and buildings.
D. The motives behind ancient and modern graffiti are completely the same.
Where was the earliest graffiti of a person's name on a monument discovered? ______
A. In a cave in Egypt.
B. In a temple on the Aegean coast.
C. On a wall of the Colosseum in Rome.
D. In an ancient meeting place in Greece.
Which of the following might be the best title for the text? ______

Sure, it's good to get along well with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant.
And yes, it's good to get along well with your teacher because, in general, it's smart to learn how to get along well with the different types of people you'll meet throughout your life.
In fact, kids who get along well with their teachers not only learn more, but they're more comfortable about asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier for them to understand new materials and do their best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she can be someone to turn to with problems, such as problems with learning or school issues.
Here is a question: what if you don't get along well with your teachers In fact, teachers want to get along well with you and enjoy seeing you learn. But teachers and students sometimes have personality clashes(个性冲突), which can happen between any two people. If you show your teacher that you want to make the situation better, he or she will probably do everything possible to make that happen. By dealing with a problem like this, you learn something about how to get along with people who are different from you.
However, if a certain teacher isn't your favorite, you can still have a successful relationship with him or her, especially ________. Here are some of those responsibilities:
Attend class ready to learn.
Be prepared for class with the right pencils, books, and completed assignments.
Listen when your teacher is talking.
Do your best, whether it's a classroom assignment, homework, or a test.
The passage is written for ________.
A. teachers B. advisers C. students D. parents
According to the passage, getting along well with your teachers will make you ________.
A. have no problems with study
B. have more pleasant time in the classroom
C. get the best scores in the exams
D. get a better seat in the classroom
The underlined word "that" in the fourth paragraph refers to ________.
A. the happy time you have in the classroom
B. getting along very well with classmates
C. a better relationship between you and your teacher
D. the disappearance of personality differences
Which of the following can be filled in the blank.
A. if you fulfill(履行) your basic responsibilities as a student
B. if you are thought of as a good student
C. if you know some basic social skills
D. if you are easygoing and helpful

Why do some parents tend to hold back their disabled children from experiencing life?Even when they are grown, the parents will not allow certain things to happen. It's true that they do have a certain amount of responsibility in protecting their severely disabled adult child, but at what point do they become overly protective?
Parents want to create a safe haven,a place where they know that nothing bad will happen to their beloved child. This seems to be a respectable and notable act in caring for a person with a disability, but it can have a side effect. When protecting their child from suspected hardships, not wanting anything bad to happen to them, they very well may be preventing good things from happening to them.
In life we all make mistakes,it is how we are able to grow and strengthen our character.Parents may feel that in certain instances their child will get hurt or mistreated in some way,so they build walls in their own minds convincing themselves of the need to shelter. However, the disabled, yes even the "severely disabled" deserve to make personal mistakes as well.Even more, they have the right to succeed.
Parents should do everything and anything within their power to see their disabled children lead a somewhat "normal" life.Parents should help their children, not hold them down. This could make them think they are unworthy and that their parents do not believe in them.
Whatever it may be,let them at least try.If they want to attend college,so be it.Parents should find out all they can,and be involved in every detail.Get to know the aides, experience it with them.If they want to dare and someday marry,so be it.Don't shut them out and form bad or critical opinions about them just because you are afraid.Unite as a family and make it work.
According to the passage,if the parents overprotect their disabled children, the children will ______ .
A. never grow up in the future
B. find no shelter when they grow up
C. become less confident when facing troubles
D. less likely meet with good things happening to them
What attitude does the author hold towards the parents? ______

The suggestions in the last paragraph imply that parents should ______ .
A. be a bridge,not a brick wall
B. act as their children's best friends
C. encourage their children to get married
D. live in harmony with their disabled children
What is the best title of this passage? ______
A. Living Within The Parents' Power.
B. Letting Your Disabled Child Succeed.
C. Getting Out Of A Brick Wall In Their Life.
D. Helping Your Disabled Child Out Of Trouble.
D
It is well known that the United States' population come from all over the world. The immigrants (移民) can learn the language, English, to keep this country united, but it is unnecessary to change their culture for an American way of life.
I believe that recent immigrants should learn English in order to live in the country. They should learn the "public language". If they don't learn English, they won't be able to communicate and do what they want. For example, my mother's friend came to the United States from Ecuador three years ago. She doesn't speak English. One day, her daughter, Anita, couldn't breathe. Anita didn't know what was going on, but she told her mother to call an ambulance. When her mother called the hospital, she couldn't communicate. The operator couldn't understand what Anita's mother was saying. Fortunately, her mother's sister arrived and called the ambulance. The doctor told her sister that if she hadn't arrived at the hospital on time, Anita could have died. A pill had gotten stuck in her throat.
Immigrants should learn English to speak with the public, but they can also keep their language at home. The children of immigrants should learn how to speak their parents' language. It is very important to communicate with our relatives and family. If we learn English only and forget our private "language", we won't be able to communicate with our parents. For example, Florence, my co-worker, speaks English only. Her mother didn't teach her Spanish (her mother's mother language). Now, Florence can't communicate with her grandparents or other relatives in Puerto Rico. She has lost her mother's mother language, tradition and culture.
Immigrants have the freedom to keep their culture and values. Immigrants should know where they come from and what their family's culture is. In this way, they can transmit it to future generations.
In conclusion, immigrants should learn English in order to communicate with the public and to keep the country united, but they shouldn't give up their own culture.
Who played the most important part in calling an ambulance for Anita
A. Anita's aunt. B. Anita's mother. C. The operator. D. The doctor.
If immigrants in the United States can't speak their parents' language, what trouble might they have
A. They can't ask for help when they get lost in the United States.
B. They can't call police for help when they are in trouble in the United States.
C. They can't make themselves understood while in their original country.
D. They can't go shopping by themselves conveniently in the United States.
The author develops the passage mainly by ______.
A. following the natural time order
B. providing typical examples
C. comparing opinions from different people
D. presenting a cause and analyzing its effects
By writing the passage, the author mainly wants to ________.
A. show that the United States is a multi-cultural country
B. advise immigrants to learn English and keep their own culture
C. explain why so many people move to the United States
D. describe the difficulties immigrants meet in a new country

一、阅读理解
A
Why should mankind explore space Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup(基因构成)as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival.Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for.Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential (潜在的)resources to be found.Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later.Resources may be more than physical possessions.Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems.Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products (副产品)of technological developments in the space industry!
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us.While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human being to survive.Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.
Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph1
A. To express his doubts. B. To compare different ideas.
C. To introduce points for discussion. D. To describe the conditions on Earth.
What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph 2
A. Humans are nature-born to do so.
B. Humans have the tendency to fight.
C. Humans may find new sources of food.
D. Humans don't like to stay in the same place.
The underlined word "spin-offs" in Paragraph 4 probably refers to______.
A. survival chances B. potential resources
C. unexpected benefits D. physical possessions
What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets
A. Our genetic makeup. B. Resources on the earth.
C. The adaptive ability of humans. D. By-products in space exploration.
Which of the statements can best sum up the passage
A. Space exploration has created many wonders.
B. Space exploration provided the best value for money.
C. Space exploration can benefit science and technology.
D. Space exploration may help us avoid potential problems on Earth.
B
Based on new analysis, we are rapidly approaching major climate change and the effects on society and the environment could be quite severe. Geographers predict that within the next eighty years, current world climate zones could shift and some could completely disappear. Polar regions will get colder while tropical regions will get even hotter, forcing animals to migrate(迁徙)north.
Climate changes like these could lead to the spread of diseases. Tropical storms and hurricanes will not only increase but may also become more intense. If the changes come too quickly, animal and plant species may not be able to adapt fast enough and could disappear.
According to Science Daily, a new study predicts that by the year 2100, many of today's familiar climates will be replaced by climates unknown in today's world. It is urgent that we reduce the risks of these far-reaching consequences for the whole world. The planet itself has been showing signs of change. In 2004, a serious tsunami created by a major earthquake killed thousands in Sumatra and in 2008, thousands died in China because of another severe earthquake. Egypt was hit in 2009 with a major earthquake and Haiti was devastated in 2010 by yet another massive earthquake.
Within just the last few months, new reports from around the world have been coming in and most agree that our climate situation is much worse than previously thought. At this point, it doesn't matter what is causing it, but rather, what can be done about it. What's more, our world is getting more and more unstable every year. There is war and threat of war everywhere. Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and serious.
However, other planets are experiencing global warming as well as our own and some scientists believe there may be some connection between this. No one knows anything for sure at this point because there is simply not enough data.
Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Ways to protect our planet. B. Solutions to climate change.
C. Be prepared for climate change. D. Climate change and its effects.
What is the author's purpose in using the examples of earthquakes
A. To show the damage earthquakes caused.
B. To remind people to prevent future earthquakes.
C. To show major changes are taking place on the planet.
D. To tell us more earthquakes will happen in the future.
What does the underlined word "devastated" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Separated. B. Destroyed. C. Removed. D. Affected.
According to the fourth paragraph, how should we react to climate change
A. We should explore the reasons for climate change.
B. We should explore possible measures to deal with it.
C. We should stop environmental pollution.
D. We should move to other planets.
What can be inferred from the passage
A. Animals and plants won't die out as long as climate changes slowly.
B. There's enough data for us to predict the future of climate change.
C. The world is getting more unstable because of animal migration.
D. The earth is not the only planet that is experiencing climate change.

The Science of Earthquakes
(1) The surface of the earth is divided into different pieces. These are called tectonic plates(构造板块). When two plates suddenly slip past one another, an earthquake happens. This shakes the ground and everything on it.
What causes earthquakes and where do they happen
(2) They are inner core, outer core, mantle(地幔) and the earth's crust(地壳). The crust and the top of the mantle make up a thin skin on the surface of the planet. But this skin is not all in one piece. It is actually made up of many tectonic plates. They are like puzzle pieces. These pieces are always sliding around and bumping into each other. Sometimes their edges get stuck together. When this happens, the rest of the plate keeps moving. Eventually the edges come unstuck. (3)
Why does the earth shake when there is an earthquake
Earthquakes send out waves in all directions. When they reach the earth's surface, they shake the ground. (4) The P wave squeezes and stretches the earth. The S wave shakes it up and down. (5)
Scientists use special tools to record and measure earthquakes. These tools are called seismographs. Recordings from seismographs tell scientists when and where an earthquake took place. They can also tell scientists the size of an earthquake.
A.How are earthquakes recorded
B.That is when an earthquake happens.

It s not easy being a teenager nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you ll still be there for him when he needs you.
Expect a lot from your child, just not everything.Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don t insist he tell you what s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he ll clam up.Instead, let him try to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you're always there for him if he seeks advice or help.Show respect for your teenager s privacy(隐私).Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations.
Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least all equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(节制).Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job.

Whenever the word "hero" comes to me, I immediately think of three Hs: honorable, hardworking, and happy. When I think more about this word, I picture someone who has accomplished good things for people and tries to do the right thing. Hattie Elizabeth Alexander is one person whom I find to be very heroic.
Hattie was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 5, 1901. During her time at College she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Bacteriology and Physiology. After that, Hattie attended Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and received her medical degree.
After her education, she pursued her career, and after much time and hard work, she drastically reduced the number of infants (幼儿) dying from meningitis (脑膜炎). Hattie was very devoted to her work and helped at as many locations as she could. Spending much of her time in the lab, Hattie successfully developed a cure against the disease, which decreased the death rate to 20 percent. At the same time, she was also a teacher working with Columbia University.
She was a caring lady interested in other people's lives. When she was teaching at Columbia University, other members would talk to her about students that were failing their classes, and somehow Hattie could always find convincing reasons as to why they should not be driven away. Later, Hattie became an instructor in Pediatrics at New York City's Babies Hospital. After many honors, she became the first woman president of the American Pediatric Society in 1965.
Hattie is my hero because her positive attitude and strength helped her accomplish great things for others. She gave them her strength by developing medicines against diseases, which, by doing so, made them stronger. This is what makes Hattie Elizabeth Alexander my hero.

Messages in honor of Stan Lee are pouring in on social media and other online sites.
Lee is the creator of famous comic book (连环漫画) characters, including Spider-Man, the Hulk, Black Panther and others. He died in Los Angeles, California, Monday. He was 95 years old. Marvel Entertainment and its parent company, Walt Disney, posted a video about the late writer, editor and publisher on their websites. Disney chairman and chief Bob Iger said Lee is "a super hero in his own right to Marvel fans around the world." He compared Lee to his comic book characters with "the power to inspire, to entertain, and to connect."
Lee was born Stanley Martin Leiber in New York City. He began writing for comic books at 19. He wrote under the name Stan Lee. He explained that he used a false name because he wanted to write a serious and great piece of literature someday. He did not want his link with comic books to be known when that happened. But it never did happen. As the pride in his work grew, he decided to legally change his name to Stan Lee.
Lee's comic book heroes stand apart from its competitor DC, the company that produced the seemingly perfect heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman. Lee's character often had super power, but they also had weaknesses and moral (道德的) failings. In a piece for Marvel in 1969, Lee discussed the importance of creating these balanced characters. Nobody is all good, or all bad, he wrote, like Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man. He is a deeply gifted inventor with serious mental health issues; or, Peter Parker, a sensitive, brainy high-school student who has no idea how to deal with the frightening abilities he gets from the bite of a radioactive spider. Even Steve Rogers, whose Captain America was the most Superman-like of the Marvel group, had problems. Rejected as a candidate for the armed forces, he volunteers to take a "supersoldier" substance to make him a super-fighting machine.
Actor Chris Evans has played that character in several Hollywood films. He posted a tribute (悼念) to Captain America's creator on Twitter Monday."There will never be another Stan Lee," he wrote. Actor, writer and funny man Seth Rogen never played one of Lee's characters but he remembered him with thanks in a Tweet."Thank you Stan Lee for making people who feel different realize they are special," he wrote.
Stan Lee created many famous comic character, except ________.
A. Iron Man B. Superman C. Captain America D. Spider Man
Stan lee wrote comic books under a false name because ________.
A. he wanted to be famous for the false name
B. he didn't want to be known as a comic book writer
C. he wanted his name to be linked with his comic books
D. he didn't want to be known as a serious literature writer
Which of the following best describes the heroes in Lee's comics
A. They are good at making people feel special
B. They are moral figures without weak points
C. They are more balanced characters than DC heroes
D. They are seemingly perfect heroes with super powers
What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. To remember a great cartoonist B. To introduce marvel comic heroes
C. To encourage studies on comics D. To promote products of marvel

Other people may have their own ideas about our lives. We can value their advice, but we don't have to take it to heart.
Our parents have dreams for us. They want us to do well in school and to do whatever is necessary to reach our highest potential (潜力). Later in life, friends may try to set us up with their ideas of the perfect partner or the perfect job. People close to us may have ideas about how we should live our lives, ideas that usually come from love and the desire for us to be happy. Other times, they come from a place of need within them whether it is a parent who wants us to live out his or her dreams or a friend who wants us to play a good role. Whatever the case, we can appreciate and consider those people's advice, but ultimately we must follow our own guidance.
There may come a time when all the suggestions can become overbearing (专横的). We may feel that the people we love don't agree on our judgment, which can hurt our feelings. It can affect the choices we make for our lives by making us doubt ourselves before we've had a chance to decide what we want. We can tell our loved ones how much we appreciate their thoughts and ideas, but that we need to live our own lives and make our own decisions. We can explain that they need to let us learn from our own experiences. When they see that we are happy with our lives and the path we are taking to reach our goals, they can make sure that all we need them to do is to share in our joy.
People close to us often tell us ideas to show their ________.
A. power B. concern C. potential D. happiness
When a friend's advice is overbearing, we may feel__________.
A. determined B. frightened C. doubtful D. grateful
What should we do if we don't accept our friends' advice
A. Tell them our choices directly.
B. Let them experience our ways of life.
C. Share our own experiences with them.
D. Let them know we should make our own decisions.
C
Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why some friendships don't last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous (宽宏大量的); be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don't tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest, you may lose your friend's trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don't have to give your lunch money or your clothes, or enjoyments, like your hobbies and your interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike (相同). But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.
Some friendships don't last very long because ________.
A. there are too many people who want to make friends.
B. they don't know friendship is something serious
C. those who give others friendships receive friendships from others
D. those who never give others friendships receive no friendship from others
According to the passage, honesty is ________.
A. as important as money B. more important than anything else
C. something countable D. the base of a friendship
Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage
A. A friend who gives you his lunch money is a true friend.
B. Always tell your friend the truth.
C. Discussing your problems with your friend often helps to solve the problem.
D. Sharing your mind with your friend is of great value.
According to the author, how do you help your friend know you better
A. Ask your friend for everything.
B. Don't tell the truth to your friend.
C. Share your ideas and feelings with your friend.
D. Give your lunch money or your clothes to your friend.
The best title of this passage is ________.
A. A Friend in Need Is a Friend Indeed B. Honesty Is the Best Habit
C. How to Be a Friend D. Three Important Points in Life

Taking the time to keep a friendship is worth every moment. The following tips can help you keep a trusting friendship.
Be dependable. It's hard to rely on a person who doesn't behave in a trustworthy way. We all know some people who say,"Okay, I will..." but never follow through. If that's you, know that you are destroying your friend's trust. (1)
Be real. Connect with people whom you value on a deep level if you want to have long-term friendships. Make friends with people you can be yourself around. Be open to differences in opinion and style—that's what makes friendship interesting. If your behavior lacks sincerity, your friendship won't last. (2)
Be loyal. If your friend tells you something as a secret, don't talk about it with anyone else, just as you'd expect your friend to do for you. (3)
(4) Good friends show respect for each other by being openly and mutually supportive. If your friend has certain values and beliefs which you don't agree with, respect his or her choices and be open to hearing more about them. Sometimes your friend will say things that you find boring or uncomfortable, but if you have respect for your friend, you'll give your friend the space to speak, and to do so without judgment.
