The event
For London s Chinese community (and everyone else who loves a good party), Chinese New Year is a huge event.
Before Chinese New Year, people make sure their houses are clean and tidy, buy new clothes and get a haircut to bring
good luck for the new year.
The celebrations
In central London, there are fireworks and performances with all kinds of acts and special guests. Celebrations in-
clude fashion shows and Chinese hip-hop acts, as well as traditional performances with Chinese acrobats. Chinatown is
busy. The streets are decorated with lucky red lanterns and full of crafts(工艺品) and food stalls(货摊) . If you re think-

on the night.
Chinese people in Britain
For young Chinese people studying or working in the UK, video call is a good way to join big family celebrations back
home. Those missing home might also cook dumplings for friends in Britain or organize an evening of karaoke. The festivi-
ties(欢庆) are not as noisy as back home, they say, where loud firecrackers are traditionally used to frighten away a terri-
ble monster called Nian. But there is still plenty of excitement, happiness and good feelings as people come together to

For me, Christmas always began in the middle of November. My sister, Alison, and I each sat down in front of the
fire and wrote a letter to Father Christmas, telling him about all the presents we wanted. We seriously wrote “Father
Christmas, the North Pole” on the envelopes before giving them to our mother to post.
Into December, our excitement grew each day as we opened the new year calendar. Christmas cards arrived in the

After lunch, the adults slept on the sofas in front of the Queen s speech on television while we all played cards. Then
we had tea, with a huge Christmas cake covered with snowmen. It didn t seem possible, but we went on eating. By bed-
time all of the children were very tired. As soon as we turned off the light, we all fell into a deep and happy sleep.
