I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday He must be silly. ”I had quite a weekend planned, so I shook my head and went on.
As I was walking, I saw a group of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him. So. I ran to him. As he was looking for his glasses, I saw tears in his eyes. I handed him his glasses. He looked at me and said, “Thanks!”There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratefulness. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. It turned out he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before coming to this schoo1.
We talked all the way home. and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. Monday morning came, and Kyle carried all his books again. I stopped him and helped him carry half the books. Joan excitedly packed her bags for her upcoming trip with her family. They were driving from New York to Virginia to go on a brief visit to their distant relatives. She was bursting with impatience to play with her cousins and chat away with her aunt and uncle.
After all of the suitcases had been loaded into the car, Tonny, Joan’s father, looked to Joan and her mother, Flora. “Is everyone ready for our road trip ” They both smiled and nodded.
It was going to be quite a long journey, and within a couple of hours Joan had already begun to feel tired. She began to nod off when she noticed the car veering off the road, sharply to the left.
Tonny managed an emergency stop, got out and walked around the car. He scratched his head, looking confused. Then, he gave a great sigh. “We have a flat tire(轮胎), ”he said to Flora.
“Use the spare tire in the trunk. Then we can replace it when we reach Virginia, ”she suggested. Tonny looked down at his feet sheepishly. “I…haven’t had the spare tire replaced since the last time we had a flat.”Flora seemed upset, but tried to remain positive. “Maybe we can call a service,”she suggested. But a quick glance at their cellphones told them that there was no signal in the area. Joan looked at her mother in the front seat, and her father still staring blankly at the flat tire outside. Both of them looked concerned.
Joan began to get worried. No other cars had passed by in a while and it seemed like they were far away from a town center. She looked out the window, wondering if they would have to sleep in the car or if there was any way they could possibly find someone to help them. Would they ever make their way to Virginia Her relatives would surely be worried about them.

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
The doctors sent my mother home to die. As a fifteen-year survivor of breast cancer, she had suffered two heart attacks when advanced cancer was found in her lung. The doctor told me sadly, "She has a few days, maybe a week. Her heart is weak and unstable. "Mom had struggled to raise three daughters while holding a full-time job, yet worked hard to maintain a warm home for her family. My plan for Mom’s final days was simple: she would live with love, and die with grace.
I took mother to my home, small but comfortable, which was a heaven to four cats and a dog. The animals had the run of my house. We equipped the bedroom with an electric hospital bed and an oxygen machine, which frightened the cats. I’d moved their furniture and the cats were annoyed. The dog, on the other hand, an immature dog with bad habits, was excited by all the changes in the house. He jumped up, barking. He is Otto who was not afraid of the hospital bed, the oxygen machine or the medical smells. Nor was he afraid of the weak woman who had scolded him. Otto jumped onto the foot of Mom's hospital bed, and stayed. With the exception of eating and using the litter box, Otto never left Mom's room.
Days passed and Mom started to rally. “Not unusual,” I was told, “a rally is often a sign of imminent death(回光返照)” I was heart-broken. But Otto would not give her up so easily. He used her improved condition to reposition himself from the foot of her bed to her side. Her thin fingers found his soft coat. He leaned into her body, as if holding tight the strings of her will to live. Though weak, she petted the dog and would not allowed me to take him. Days turned into weeks and Mom continued to fight.
Paragraph 1
Once, after the nurses had gone for the day, I heard the sound of Mom’s voice coming from her room. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2

When graduation day arrived, I saw Kyle and found he was a little nervous. I went over to hug him and said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be great!” He smiled and thanked me. Then he took his place and started his speech, in which he thanked his parents, teachers, his classmates... especially his friends who helped him go through those tough years. “A good friend can make a difference to you, ” he added. To my surprise, he told the story of the first day we met.
Kyle said he had planned to quit school that day before he saw me. He thought he performed poorly in school and let his parents down. For a long time he had been suffering depression. He ended up considering leaving school. That was why I saw him carrying his stuff home that day. “Thankfully, my friend offered me a hand and that changed my mind.” Hearing his words, I felt warmth fill me. Only then did I realize with one small action you can make a difference and change a person’s life.

【答案】Paragraph 1: Once, after the nurses had gone for the day, I heard the sound of Mom’s voice coming from her room. I found her with the head of the bed raised, reading from the newspaper, with Otto in her arms, listening adoringly. I will forever cherish the memory of Otto’s touching her face. Eventually, using a walker, Mom began to take walks through the house, followed by Otto. Where she rested, Otto rested. Where she moved, Otto shadowed. Somehow, Otto knew that during those days he became her dog child, giving her life purpose.
Paragraph 2: Three years later, Mom together with Otto is still here, medicines and nurses long gone. When we saw the doctor a while ago, “I can’t believe it, Lula,” he said. “I can’t find your cancer and your heart is strong. When your daughter brought you to me, I thought you were a ship that had sailed.” Mom gives the credit to Otto, who continues to share his gift of love―a medicine more powerful than any drug a doctor could prescribe.

2.第二段所给首句Filled with pleasure, Jatin walked home in no time.这一句呼应前文,紧接着可以从“不久前我们去看医生时,他说:‘我真不敢相信,卢拉。’”入手续写。

The Art of Recycling
Recycling is not new. Many civilizations have reused objects. However, recycling is more important today because there is more pollution and fewer natural resources. 16 Others use these recycled materials to make art!
17 Artists use old tires, pieces of metal, cloth, etc. These materials might come from yard sales or swap meets(旧物交换会). In addition, businesses might give used materials to artists.

People walked into the cloud sculpture and danced to live music. 19 That’s the number of water bottles that are thrown into the trash every hour in New York City! The artists wanted to show how many water bottles ended up in the garbage.
Many art projects are shown at outdoor art and music festivals. Many cities even have festivals specifically for recycled art.
Museums also exhibit recycled art. A museum in Texas allowed visitors to add to the art on display. The project was called the“Recycle Reef(珊瑚礁) .”The background looked like an ocean reef, and people added to the“reef’with the recycled materials provided. 20

Teach Children the Value of Money
As we're moving towards a more cashless society and real pocket money is becoming increasingly unpopular, children increasingly no longer understand the value of physical money and simple tasks such as working out how many coins are needed to buy a toy or sweets will become out-of-use. Education around money management and establishing healthy money habits at a young age have become even more vital.
____16____ Start with planning an activity together and then define a budget. Then, research what things you will buy, work out which items may be better to buy. As you carry out each part of the activity, make sure to save all the receipts, and then evaluate if you managed to stay within, or broke your budget. _______17_______
Giving your children or encouraging them to suggest a regular chore can be rewarded with some pocket money. _______18_______ For example, 14-year-olds are often making their own beds, so introducing a reward for such a "chore" is not a good idea, however, emptying the dishwasher might be just right for a nine-year-old. These types of chores will help them to get an understanding of earning money and the relationship between time, effort and money. Educate children through encouragement by paving the way for them to act on their own curiosity and interest. _______19_______
Coming up with and doing activities or day to day tasks together with your children, is not only much more enjoyable for your children, but it also helps them to become more confident and decisive about making their own decisions about savings, interest rates, or allowances. _____20_____ That is bound to pave the way to breaking the trend of financial illiteracy.
A. That is one of the most important factors for learning.
B. Involve them in everyday money management activities.
C. This can be done with real-money or a digital piggy bank.
D. Giving your child regular pocket money, big enough to cover basic wants.
E. They will become more financially independent and wiser to online spending.
F. Such a chore beyond what is considered to be done at a certain age is the best.
G. This practice of setting a budget is very useful and fun for both parents and children.

Healthy Sleep, Effective Learning
As is often the case, a good sleep can fill us with energy for the coming day, allowing us to do our studies in an effective way. Meanwhile, staying up too late is bad for our health. If we sleep too late, we’ll feel tired the next day and can’t concentrate better.
To have a good sleep habit, at first, we should keep a good sleep pattern and follow it strictly. Second, it’s highly recommended that we go to sleep before 10 p.m. If we have had trouble falling asleep for a long time, we should consult a doctor.

A blind skateboarder has proven that his lack of sight won’t stop him from living a normal life—and now he’s learned some of the most complicated tricks.
Dan Mancina, 34, from Michigan, the US, was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at 13, a rare genetic disease and it causes loss of vision. Around five years ago, Dan lost his vision completely and now is defined as a blind person—but refuses to let it hold him back. Dan said that he was discouraged by other people’s behaviors and was determined to prove people wrong, so he started skateboarding, practiced every day, and soon he was landing trick after trick.
Dan started performing tricks that some might not expect a blind person to be able to do— like throwing darts(飞镖)—but they would be wrong. He said he felt a need to prove himself to those who doubted his abilities. So Dan, who has been skateboarding since he was seven years old, recently posted a video of himself performing a trick on the Internet.
The experience reminded him of his love for the sport and inspired him to continue pursuing his passion, but now his methods are somewhat different. Before skating at a park, Dan uses a stick to measure the different ramps(斜坡)and corners, and get a feel for the area. He also uses a beeper box or a Bluetooth speaker to bounce the sounds off anything in the environment—such as a nearby road—warning him of any dangers in the area.
The skateboarder said, “I get a mental map of the area where I am and use every other sense I have. I'm always trying to progress and keep pushing myself further and further. I have certain goals that I want to achieve. One day I want to film full-length skateboard videos without any cuts. That’s really my goal. ”
4. What happened to Dan Mancina when he was thirteen

Located off the coast of Croatia, in the Adriatic Sea, Baljenac is a tiny island covered by a series of dry-stone walls that make it look like a giant fingerprint when seen from above.
The oval-shaped island of Baljenac is covered by a 23-kilometer-long network of dry-stone walls. You’d think it was an ancient labyrinth(迷官), if not for the fact that the walls are about waist high and designed only to make agriculture easier in an unfriendly place. The rocky land and strong winds aren’t exactly perfect for the growth of plants, so the natives of the nearby island of Kaprije built these stone walls to separate their crops and offer them some protection. It’s a technique used in other parts of Europe, like England or Ireland, but nowhere else do these walls copy the pattern of a human fingerprint as they do on Baljenac Island.
The uninhabited island has a surface of only 0.14 square kilometers but features 23 kilometers of walls created simply by piling rocks on top of each other. The same type of walls are used on Kaprije and Zut, but Baljenac has by far the highest concentration by surface area.
Most of the stone wall network is believed to have been built during the 19th century, but both Baljenac and Kaprije served as safe shelters for Christians during the Ottoman conquests (征服)of the 16th and 17th centuries, so some parts of the wall could be even older.
Ever since aerial photos of Baljenac started spreading on the Internet, the popularity of the fingerprint island has grown considerably as has tourist presence in the area. Although locals welcome visitors, some worry about the damage suffered by the walls at the hands of ill-mannered tourists.
The Croatian government has requested that UNESCO include this island in its list of world heritage sites, which will not only boost its popularity even more but also guarantee Baljenac higher protection from the local authorities.
8. Why were the dry-stone walls built on Baljenac
A. To protect crops from animal attacks. B. To make it easier to grow crops.
C. To attract tourists to the island. D. To serve as a cultural symbo1.
9. What are some locals concerned about
A. The strong winds from the sea. B. The lack of protection from UNESCO.
C. The collapse of the stone walls. D. The damage done to the walls by tourists.
10. What is the purpose of the text
A. To introduce a famous fingerprint island.
B. To make an advertisement for a special island.
C. To find out the secret of the fingerprint island.
D. To call on people to protect the stone walls on Baljenac.
11. Where does the text most probably come from
A. A travel website. B. A science report.
C. A history book. D. A financial magazine.
D
Can you really find out where someone is from based on how they queue(排队) And why—across the world—do some queues seem to take forever, while others, even of the same waiting time, seem to go relatively quickly
Richard Larson, Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor and a world expert on queues, as well as various social scientists, believes how you queue does, in fact, often give away your origin. In the United States, how people queue even depends on which city they are from. “One of my findings is that you can tell a lot about the social culture of citizens by watching their micro behavior in queues. People in Boston, New York and Washington D. C. all queue in different ways, ”he says. “In Washington, people queue at a random point in a sidewalk. These are government workers who know that the bus stops at this place at 4:05, so they queue up dutifully—first come first serve. I have never seen any such behavior in New York or Boston. ”
No matter how“good”the queuers are, though, scientists agree that for the queue to function, it needs to be fair. As long as people are served in the order they are lined up, queue anger can be avoided.
This is the idea behind the winding queue behind ropes or barriers where, when you reach the front, you are directed to the next available server. It’s no faster than having individual lines all the way through. But it does mean that no one arriving after you will get served before you.
The final moments of the queue are also important. Research by INSEAD business school professor Ziv Carmon and Princeton University psychology professor Daniel Kahneman found that if our wait ends on a happy note—for instance, if the queue speeds up at the end—we will view that experience more positively, even if for most of the time we were very uncomfortable, quietly cursing(骂)the person in front.
12. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By analyzing facts. B. By presenting findings.
C. By raising questions. D. By making comments.
13. Which of the following statements may Richard Larson agree with
A. Some people get more pleasure from queuing up than others.
B. The way you queue is a reflection of your cultural background.
C. People from Washington behave better than those from Boston.
D. The understanding of social distance varies from place to place.
14. What does the underlined part“the idea”in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Queuing patiently. B. No pain no gain.
C. Queuing randomly. D. First come first serve.
15. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. One should take a positive attitude towards queuing.
B. It is a good idea to keep queuing until the last moment.
C. Waiting in a queue is anything but a pleasant experience.
D. The movement speed of a queue might make a difference.

Trucker Gerlock traveled hundreds of thousands of miles with his dog, Holly, who came with him on every route—including his last one. While driving near Dallas, Texas, on the job, the 59-year-old Marylander crashed into a concrete column. Gerlock was killed instantly. Looking in the back of the truck, though, rescue drivers found one survivor.
Rescue workers cut the Chesapeake Bay retriever(切萨皮克海湾寻回犬)—practically untouched—out of the back of the truck, where she’d been sleeping. “It’s amazing that anything survived, ”Sandy Nordhoff, friend of Gerlock, told The Kent County News.
Unsure what happened to Holly, Gerlock’s friends from his town of Rock Hall, Maryland, made numerous calls and emails to agencies in order to find out where the dog was. Eventually, they found out she had been staying in Dallas Animal Services shelter and a foster family had taken her in for Thanksgiving. The Rock Hall locals hatched a plan to get her home.
Joe Creighton and Sandy’s husband, Russell Nordhoff, both lifelong friends of Gerlock, volunteered to make the 2, 800-mile trip from Rock Hall to Dallas and back, which took two days each way. The friends borrowed Gerlock’s pickup truck for the road, so Holly would feel more comfortable on the journey home, according to The Kent County News.
Back in Rock Hall, some of Gerlock’s friends adopted Holly. Ever since, the dog has been a town icon(偶像), making an appearance in almost every town parade.

There are around 100 tribes(部落)that live in global isolation, mostly in South America and India. The Sentinelese have lived on one of the Andaman Islands in Eastern India for 60, 000 years. They protect their island by fighting against people from outside. Their language is different from any other known language. Another Andaman tribe is the Jarawa. In the past, they were independent and fought against anybody trying to make contact with them. But in 1998, the Indian government built a road across their land, and since then, they’ve had more contact with the outside world.
Some Amazon tribes avoid contact because of unhappy memories. The Mashco-Piro left their vegetable gardens after rubber companies killed most of their tribe at the beginning of the 20th century. Those who survived became nomadic(游牧的)and started hunting animals in the forest.
The Awa live in the Amazon forests ofBrazil. Out of 350 members, 100 have no contact with the outside world. They left their villages and adopted a nomadic lifestyle around 1850 to escape attacks by Europeans. In the following years, farmers in nearby communities started cutting the trees to expand their farmland. The Awa lost most of their hunting land. The few Amazon tribes that still exist are fighting to keep their traditional way of life.
Survival, an organization that fights for the rights of tribal people, says that uncontacted tribes are the most vulnerable(弱势的)humans on the planet and that’s why their environment should be unavailable to the rest of us. After years of pressure, the organization got Brazil’s government to clear non-natives from the Awa land. All non-Awa people are leaving so the tribe can get their forest back.
But some think it's impossible for tribes to stay isolated forever in a connected world. Contact will be made one day. So the question is:Whose choice should it be, ours or theirs

Chinese researchers have developed a robot designed to help doctors treat the new coronavirus and other highly infectious diseases.
The machine has a long robotic arm attached to a base with wheels. It can perform some of the same medical examination tasks as doctors. Cameras record the robot’s activities, which are controlled remotely so doctors can avoid coming in close contact with infected patients. Doctors and other medical workers can operate the machine from a nearby room, or from much farther away.
The robot’s main designer is Zheng Gangtie, an engineer and professor at Tsinghua University. He told a news agency that he got the idea for the device around the time of the Lunar New Year in January, when the COVID-19 virus was spreading quickly.
Zheng said a friend of his is the head of Beijing’s Tsinghua Changgung Hospital. He said his friend told him that one of the biggest problems in dealing with COVID-19 was that healthcare workers treating patients were getting infected themselves. Zheng said he wanted to do something to help this situation.
So the engineer gathered a team and went to work on the robotic device. The team was able to convert(转换) two robotic arms. The devices use the same technology that is used for space equipment. The new robot is almost completely automated and perform the most dangerous tasks. However, some doctors said that it would be better not to build such robots to be fully automatic. This is because many patients still desire a personal presence to help calm them during treatment.
The plan is to use the robot to help treat coronavirus patients, along with assistance from nurses and other hospital workers. Zheng said he would like to build more of the robots and does not plan to make any profit from the design, but hopes that a company can begin that process.

Paying it forward is a concept that involves doing something good for someone in response to a good deed done on your behalf or a gift you received. When you pay it forward, however, you don't repay the person who did something nice for you. Instead, you do something nice for someone else.
Recently, an inspiring note found inside a random book has inspired thousands of people to pay it forward.
Ashley Jost was shopping at Target when a book caught hex eye. The 27-year-old bought the book Girl Stop Apologizing and began reading it when she got home. After a few minutes her dog started barking so she put the book aside. When she got back, she noticed something on the ground. "A five-dollar note fell out, " Jost said.
She looked through the book, and in one of the last pages, there was a note that read, “To the person who buys this book: I am having a tough day. I thought maybe I could brighten someone else’s with this little surprise. Go and buy a coffee, a hamburger or a face mask. Practice some self care today. Remember that you are loved, you are amazing, and you are strong -Lisa”
Jost decided to post a photo of the note and the money on Twitter and it went like a virus. People are promising their own random acts of kindness.
“In that moment,I didn’t necessarily need the pick-me-up,but I feel obligated(有义务的)to share it, and I’m hearing back from people who did,” Jost said. “The ripple effect is pretty unbelievable.
After seeing her Twitter post, Lisa mailed Jost a card. "She said it made her cry in a good way,” Jost said. But Lisa still didn’t give away who she was. She left no return address. What will you get if you ask middle schoolers to show you their city through a camera There may be images of flowers and friends, street scenes and sneakers, and trees and trains. It can also include colorful images featuring their favorite people, places and things. Such photographs made up an exhibition that was the end result of a special citywide photography lesson called “Everyday DC”.
“DC is a place where people can all come together and be free and be with everyone that they love,” said Lauryn Tharpe, one of the four student curators (馆长) who worked with their art teacher at Brookland Middle School to put the exhibition together. “There’s more to DC than big buildings and important people.”
“Everyday DC” was inspired by a popular Instagram feed called Everyday Africa, which was started by two professional photographers who noticed the personal photos of Africa, from their perspective (视角) showing a different story than their professional work. The goal of the online photo “exhibition” was to show viewers what it’s like to live in Africa, as opposed to what people outside of Africa see in the news.
In Washington DC, students took photos to reflect their lives there. Twelve middle schools each submitted about 10 student photographs, from beautiful portraits to action shots and images of the students’ favorite foods. Tharpe and another three students were selected to be curators by their art teacher, Maame Bawuah, who coordinated (协调) the project for DC Public Schools.
“I have a lot of amazing students, although the four of them are quite exceptional,” said Bawuah, who chose the students to be curators because of their interest in both photography and museum management.

A mind-reading chip that lets you control a computer by just thinking has been made public at a conference in China. Named Brain Talker, the chip could be used to control computers, smart phones and other devices, its creators say. It has been jointly developed by Tianjin University and China Electronics Corporation.
This kind of brain-computer interface (接口) is designed to let a person control a computer, a smartphone or other electronic devices using his/her brainwaves alone-without needing any forms of verbal orders, movements, or button pressing. Brain interfaces would not only allow for the faster operation of various technologies, but also be used to assist people with disabilities, for example by letting an individual drive an electric wheelchair just by thinking.
“Brain-computer interfaces hold a promising future,” said Dong Ming. "The Brain Talker chip advances brain-computer interface technology, allowing it to become more portable, wearable and accessible to the general public.
The brain decoding (解码) chip works by picking out minor neural (神经) electrical signals in the brain and rapidly translating them into a form that the computer can understand. “This brain-computer chip has the ability to identify minor neural electrical signals and decode their information efficiently, which can greatly enhance the speed and accuracy of brain-computer interfaces,” said Dr. Dong.
Recent technology advances have allowed researchers to develop the Brain Talker chip, so it is smaller and operates faster, more precisely and with greater efficiency than existing brain-computer interfaces. Although it is not clear exactly how the device will be worn, most brain-computer interface devices are worn on the outside of the body, rather than being fixed directly into the users’ brain. Cheng Longlong, a data scientist, said that the research team will attempt to improve the performance of the Brain Talker. One day brain-computer codec chips will contribute to medical treatment, education, self-discipline, security as well as games and entertainment.

School was over, the day was fading and it started to rain. I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again—a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy (嫉妒), but something like depression. I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache occasionally. She looks like a homely middle-aged housewife. She knits (编织) most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half-joking manner: homemade. She simply doesn’t seem to understand what’s in fashion; Chanel or Gucci means nothing to her.
I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp, or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been fun riding with her. I had enjoyed watching our shadows growing longer and shorter in an alternate fashion by the light of the streetlamps along the road. Just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.

Mrs.Clarke switched the radio off: she wanted to make her middy lunch before her baby woke up.She pushed the pram(婴儿车)into the garden, left it under a tree out of the sun and went into the kitchen.
Then minutes later she came to the back door to see if everything was all right.A big dog was standing by the pram looking at the baby.“That’s the Johnson’s dog.I’ve told them they ought to keep that great animal in their own garden. Those dogs are a bit too much like wolves.”Then Mrs.Clarke went cold.“Wolves.What have I heard about wolves ”She was sure she had heard something about an escaped wolf on the radio. She looked hard at the creature by the pram—and the more she looked the more certain she became. It wasn’t the dog from next door.Like it, but different. It was as big as the dog, but the color was greyer and it looked thinner.
At this moment the creature put its front legs on the side of the pram and looked at the sleeping baby, licking its face. The baby woke up and began to cry quietly.
Mrs.Clarke wanted to scream, but she knew it would be wrong to do that. What should she do “Inform the police,” the radio had said. But that meant leaving the garden and going to the telephone near the front door. She was sure that somehow she must get the wolf away from the prom. The she remembered the piece of meat she had bought. It was on the kitchen table.

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
A dawning sun shaped the massive form of the train. Loaded with fuel, water, and sand for power, the lead train weighed in at 410,000 pounds. Conductor Robert, 49, ran his eye along the 96 cars behind him.
It was 7 a.m. Robert had already checked the list of dangerous materials aboard the train. ''We've got some gas with us,'' he'd reported to his engineer, Lindley, in the cab (驾驶室). The presence of gas would mean taking extra care when braking the 6,200-ton train. With explosive gas on board, an accident would be more dangerous. After a final external inspection, Robert jumped aboard. Slowly the train pulled out of the station.
Robert and Lindley had 50 years of railroading experience between them. They approached Lafayette at about 1:45 p. m. and slowed the train to the speed limit. Lindley turned on his flashing lights and warning bell. The two had been through the city hundreds of times, but they grew extra cautious rounding the first curve (弯道). Ahead, over just three miles of track, lay no fewer than 24 street crossings. As the train came out of the curve, Lindley noticed a small dot on the right rail about 150 yards ahead. He thought it might be a dog. Now, as the train approached within 100 yards of the object on the rail, Robert looked attentively. Then shock coursed through him.
''My God!'' he yelled as a tiny face turned toward him. ''It's a baby!''
Lindley had an instant decision to make, applying full emergency brakes with half the train still wrapped around a curve. He had to risk an emergency stop. Robert opened the left door of the engine cab quickly and stepped out onto a narrow walkway. He hurried to the front of the engine and crossed to the right side. He then stepped down to the lower portion of the walkway just to the back of the train's ''cow catcher''.
Paragraph 1:
Stretching as far as he could, Robert put his right leg out in front of him._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Telling himself he still had a job to do, Robert went back to check on the cars. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

【答案】参考答案
Today Mom showed up in a raincoat. Once she saw me, Mom called my name excitedly. Almost everybody present looked in her direction. I swallowed hard and fixed my stare on the middle of the road, sweat forming in tiny droplets on my forehead. When she tried to cover me with the back of her raincoat, I simply threw it aside. In silence, I shot her a blaming glance and threw my backpack heavily into the front basket of the bike. Without a single word, I jumped onto the backseat.
Mom tried to cover me with the raincoat again as a storm set in. Reluctantly, I pulled it over. With the wind roaring angrily and the raincoat dancing, it felt warm and secure inside. Mom bent forward and pedaled with all her strength, her waist twitching with tension. I started to feel guilty of my coldness, tears welling up in my eyes. Quietly, I slipped my hands around Mom’s waist and gently pressed my face against her back. In the crying wind and pouring rain, I found myself hugging my mother, tighter than ever.

【答案】Paragraph 1: Stretching as far as he could, Robert put his right leg out in front of him. Swinging his leg out, he swept her aside with his foot. Robert swiftly leapt from the moving train and ran back to the child. She lay crying by the tracks, blood streaming from a wound beneath her hair. A great relief sweeping over Robert, Robert lifted her from the dirt. It was only then that Robert noticed the train had stopped and there were flashing red lights of emergency vehicles alongside the tracks. With the baby in his arms, Robert began to walk and was met by the police.
Paragraph 2: Telling himself he still had a job to do, Robert went back to check on the cars. As Robert aboard rested in the train, his pent-up emotions rushed to the surface. It had all unfolded so fast, and the reality of what he had done was only now hitting him. Within minutes, Lindley was standing beside Robert, taking the controls again. They looked at each other, their expressions of relief and gratitude more persuasive than words. Robert’s overalls were still spotted with blood. The train pulled slowly out of Lafayette.

It was only then that Robert noticed the train had stopped and there were flashing red lights of emergency vehicles alongside the tracks.使用了强调it was…that…;Lindley was standing beside Robert, taking the controls again.使用了现在分词作状语。山东省日照市2020-2022届(三年)高三三模英语试题七选五分类汇编
