Grocery stores try to have enough employees at checkout to get all their customers through with minimum delay. ___7___Any small interruption - a price check, a chatty customer-can have downstream effects, holding up an entire line.
If there are three lines in the store, delays will happen randomly at different registers. Think about the probability:____8____So it's not just in your mind: Another line probably is moving faster.
Researchers have a good way to deal with this problem. Make all customers stand in one long, snaking line- called a serpentine line - and serve each person at the front with the next available register. ___9___This is what they do at most banks and fast-food restaurants. With a serpentine line, a long delay at one register won't unfairly punish the people who lined up behind it. Instead, it will slow down everyone a little bit but speed up checkout overall.
____10____It takes many registers to keep one line moving quickly, and some stores can't afford the space or manpower. So wherever your next wait may be: Good luck.

You may not think that such large, fast, and fierce tigers need help to survive, but they do.
At the start of the 20th century, there were over 100,000 tigers living in the wild. By the turn of the century, the number of tigers outside of catch decreased to just over 3,000. Interestingly, the most serious threats that tigers face come from a much smaller species, one with an average weight of around 140 lbs. That species is Homo sapiens, better known as humans. ____57____
____58____ People have long valued the famous striped(有条纹的) skins. Though trading tiger skins is now illegal in most parts of the world, tiger fur are worth around $10,000 on the black market. The tiger population is now isolated in small pockets in southern and southeastern Asia. ____60____Humans have built towns and cities. A major difficulty to preserving tigers is the large amount of territory(领土,领域) that each tiger requires. Each wild tiger demands between 200 and 300 square miles. Because tigers need so much territory, it is really difficult to acquire enough land to support a large population of tigers.

Much of the work in today’s world is accomplished(完成) in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals. ___81___Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent
___82___They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent; above that level, the team’s performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn’t evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team’s performance.
To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调) their actions. ___83___In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total, he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team’s performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told, “There is no I in TEAM.” ___84___
Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛), whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.
___85___ An A-team may require a balance--not just A players, but a few generous B players as well.
A.It’s not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent.
B.Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent.

When early colonial settlers went to America, they took many forms of dance to their new home. Square dancing, one of the oldest forms of American folk dancing, developed from several different Old World group dances, mainly English country dances, and the French quadrille (卡德利尔舞).
In the American version, a square is formed by four couples.____86____Each couple stands on one side of the square, the boy on the left and the girl on the right. An American addition to square dancing is the caller.
The caller—someone who calls out the dance steps in time to the music—was a completely American invention.____87____Later the dances became so complicated that it was necessary to have someone call out cues (暗示). Thus, dancers didn't have to remember so many steps. The caller didn't just call out “do-se-do your partner”; a good caller also came up with colorful sayings or witty lines that he would say in between the cues such as "Don't be bashful (羞怯的) and don't be afraid."____88____
Although popular for years, square dancing seemed to be going out of style and fading away until the early 1930s, when Henry Ford helped revive interest in it.
