During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn't bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows，big signs that said NEED A JACK（千斤顶），and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small or the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw（锯子）from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tie iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man's hand, but he wouldn't take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

When I was about to say goodbye，the girl asked if I’d had lunch. It was not until this moment that I realized that I’d been waiting， working and sweating for almost four hours without eating or drinking. Catching my awkward gesture and my hand pressing on my empty belly，she quickly reached out to hold a corner of my sleeve in a firm grip and wheeled around for a few urgent exchanges with her Mom. Then minutes later I found myself leaning against my Jeep，waving goodbye to the warm-hearted family，accompanied by a paper bag with a pleasant scent of newly-made Mexican pancake.
After they left， I got into my Jeep and opened the paper bag. The dribbling smell went through my nostrils with force, striking every nerve of my being. Without hesitation, I crammed the whole pancake down through several bites. Letting out a long and satisfying burp， I upended the paper bag，but surprised to find a scrunched tissue roll out. Inside it, lay exactly the$20billI'd paid before. I was struck to totally numb. I even couldn't utter a syllable. After what seemed like an eternity， I finally started my engine， gathered my speed and galloped forward， hoping one day I could say“thank you”to all of them again.

She takes off the clothes and puts them on the next person, who then swims 50 meters. This continues until everyone on the team has completed a lap.
Then it was Elizabeth's turn to swim. She seemed to swim faster in the T-shirt and socks than she did when she wasn't wearing them. Approaching the halfway mark, Elizabeth was in the lead. Suddenly, somebody noticed that one of Elizabeth's socks had fallen off and was floating （漂）in the pool. "She has to get that sock on before the end of the race," a swimming official told Elizabeth's team, “or you will be disqualified.”

You never know when I might lose my job.”
All hope was not gone. There was a sign in the Forbes store window that said “layaway (分期付款)” . Angelina pulled ten worn dollar bills from her coat pocket. She ran to the store and begged the salesperson, Mrs. Harding, to hold ‘her’ dress for her. “Ok. But you must come back in two weeks to pay the rest.” Angelina felt like jumping into the air. She was so happy that she told Mrs. Harding about the Avalon Service Club’s work and its Christmas party.
Then, Angelina shook and suffered in the cold wind looking for work. Finally, Angelina got a job making new clothing for dolls. Angelina was excellent at sewing. Sure enough, the dolls’ dresses turned out beautiful. She got twenty dollars. Still, she was far from having enough money for her dress. She felt helpless as the final payment date arrived.
