Chinese athletes were highlighted by a series of inspirational wins in the International Ski Federation’s World Cup circuit recently. China’s Gu Ailing, a Chinese freestyle talent, made history by becoming the first ever back-to-back freeski World Cup winner in two different events at the same venue after claiming the slopestyle title in Calgary, Canada, on Feb.15, 2020. The day before, Gu had stormed to her first Cup gold in the halfpipe competition.
Gu again thrilled the crowds on Feb.15 in the slopestyle with another impressive display of technical riding, landing a string of difficult tricks, including a massive right 900° twist with a tail grab in her second run that earned her 89.18 points to dominate the 18-strong field.
“Honestly, my mind is blown,” Gu told the FIS website after the competition. “Coming in I didn’t have any expectations. I try not to take anything for granted. Honestly, I could not have expected two wins from these events.”
“I really just came in trying to do my best and ski the way I knew I could. Skiing my best is really the best part of this, and being rewarded for it just makes it even better.”
Born to a Chinese mother and an American father in San Francisco, US, Gu, better known as Eileen in the States, completed a naturalization process last June to represent China in international competitions.
Now she has her sights set on doing her mother’s home country proud at the 2022 Beijing Games.
A talented skier who has won many national junior titles in the US, Gu became a hit last month after winning two golds and a silver — in halfpipe, Big Air and slopestyle — at her first appearance in Winter Youth Olympics in Lausanne, Switzerland.
With Gu now on board in freeski, China’s snow sports team, which also features world-class aerial skiers and halfpipe snowboarders, is determined to challenge Western dominance on the snow in 2022.

First Day at School
It was my first day at school in London and I was half-excited and half-frightened. On my way to school I wondered, what questions the other boys would ask me and practiced all the answers: “I am nine years old. I was born here but I haven’t lived here since I was two. I was living in Farley. It’s about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago.” I also wondered if it was the rule for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk it.
No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the center of the playground, expecting someone to say “hello”, but no one spoke to me.
My teacher was called Mr. Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so I didn’t stand out there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon. Mr. Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens, so he asked several boys if they knew Dickens’ birthplace, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said: “Timbuktu” and Mr. Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me. I said: ”Portsmouth” and everyone stared at me because Mr. Jones said I was right. This didn’t make me very popular, of course. “He thinks he’s clever,” I heard Brian say.
After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brian’s team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper.
“He’s big enough and useless enough,” Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me.
As the boy kicked the ball hard along the ground to my right, I threw myself down quickly and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were grazed and bleeding. Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me.
“Do you want to join my team ” he said.
At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger.

Naming hurricane
New research from the University of Illinois finds that hurricanes with female names are likely to cause more deaths than those with male names. The study examined over 60 years of hurricanes which hit the US. The results showed there were higher death tolls, on average, when the hurricanes were given a female name. This wasn’t because female-named hurricanes were any more severe; rather that people’s behavior changed.
Sharon Shavitt, one of the authors of the report, explained: “In judging the intensity of a storm, people appear to be applying their beliefs about how men and women behave. This makes a female-named hurricane, such as Belle or Candy, seem gentled and less violent.” People unconsciously say to themselves: how could I be killed by a hurricane called Candy In fact, hurricanes are named arbitrarily, and the names tell you nothing about the severity of the storm.
But, if people in the path of the storm are letting its name affect whether they take shelter, what we call it may matter more than we think. Having searched through the records, the researchers returned to the lab to test their finding experimentally. People were given a series of hypothetical storms with male and female names and asked to make judgments about their intensity and the risk they faced. The results showed that people often regarded male-named hurricanes, like Hurricane Christopher or Hurricane Victor as more intense and riskier than the female-named ones, like Hurricane Alexandra and Hurricane Christ. Shavitt continued, “People imagining a ‘female’ hurricane were not as willing to seek shelter. The fixed ideas that underlie these judgments are subtle and not necessarily hostile toward women — they may involve viewing women as warmer and less aggressive than men.”
The fact is that until the late 1970s, hurricanes were always given female names, as they were thought to represent women’s qualities like unpredictability. This practice — and the sexist reasoning behind it — was rightly abandoned in favour of choosing between male and female. Strangely, though, what we’ve learnt is that we’d be better off naming all hurricanes after men to take advantage of people’s fixed views.
The researchers estimate that changing a severe hurricane’s name from “Eloise” to “Charles” could potentially cut the death toll by one-third. Perhaps the naming of hurricane is one specific situation where we shouldn’t worry about being sexist, if being a little sexist is going to save lives.
11.Hurricanes with female names are likely to cause more deaths because________.

It was a hot summer day, and I became thirsty. The sun was right above our heads, and my thirst became unbearable. My mouth was completely dry. We could see a village at the bottom of the mountain — four hours away, according to the smuggler. After a few minutes, however, we got to a small lake. The water was yellow and covered with algae, but the smuggler drank it and brought me a cup of water to drink. As I looked into the cup, I was reminded of the solution that we prepared in biology class in order to grow bacteria. This was the main source of water for the village. Who knows what microorganisms were swimming in that lake.
“I wouldn’t drink it if I were you,” my aunt said. But I closed my eyes and drank the whole cup at once. I would worry about the consequences later.
We reached the village just before sunset. After eating dinner and resting for several hours, we started to travel again. The night journey was magnificent. The sky was clear, the moon was full, and millions of stars seemed to be twinkling at the night travelers. We could hear the bells of another car a van coming from the opposite direction, getting louder and louder as it got close. The ding-a-ling of that caravan added a rhythm to the lonely desert.
Now we were on the land of the Freedom Fighters. We knew if they recognized the smuggler, they would kill all of us as spies. The Freedom Fighters and the Millitia are enemies to each other, and the Freedom Fighters did not trust anyone who was traveling with an agent.
At dawn we reached a small teahouse, where we had some tea and bread. We walked on, and soon a signpost got my attention. As I got closer, I was able to read the words: Welcome to Pakistan I started to cry, walking backwards to get one last glimpse of my beloved country.

In the mid-1950s, I was a bored boy student who believed that doing any more than necessary was wasted effort. One day, this approach threw me into embarrassment.
In Mrs. Totten’s eighth-grade math class at Central Avenue School in Anderson,Indiana, we were learning to add and subtract decimals
Our teacher typically assigned (布置) daily homework, which would be checked in class the following day. On most days, our grades were based on our oral answer to homework questions.
Mrs. Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had appeared on our homework sheets. She would start either at the front or the back of the classroom and work toward the other end.
Since I was seated near the middle of about 35 students, it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to answer. This particular time, I had completed my usual two or three problems according to my calculations (计算).
However, what I failed to expect was that several students were absent. As Mrs. Totten made her way from the beginning of the class, I tried my best to think of and decide which math problem I would get. I tried to work it out before she got to me. but my brain couldn’t function at that moment.
When Mrs. Totten reached my desk, she asked what answer I’d got for problem No.14. “I...I didn’t get anything,” I answered, and my face burned with shame.
I thought a lot after class that day. Till now, I still remember what happened in that math class. If I could choose one school day that taught me the most, it would be that one.
18.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage
A.The author thought making an effort was important.
B.Mrs. Totten asked students to grade their homework themselves.
C.The author thought doing the necessary was enough.
D.The students were asked to answer homework questions together.

A.requested her students to finish their usual questions
B.walked up and down when asking questions
C.chose two or three questions for the students
D.asked questions in a way that the author was familiar with
20.The author failed to get the questions he had expected because________.
A.several students didn’t come to school
B.the class didn’t begin as usual
C.Mrs. Totten didn’t start from the back of the class
D.he suffered from a serious disease
21.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A.A Creative Student B.An Unforgettable Teacher
C.A Valuable Lesson D.An Effective Approach

Everyone at Pacsafe is always eager to get out in the world and enjoy new cultures, food, and experiences. With that in mind we asked a few of our top travel bugs for their best travel destination recommendations for 2019. They also included their favorite Pacsafe bag to take on the trip. Enjoy and hopefully get some ideas for your own globe-trotting adventure.
Sri Lanka — Alison Hanko, Global Marketing Director
I’m going to Sri Lanka this summer holiday and can’t wait. It’s close to Hong Kong where I live and I’ve always wanted to go. The food is supposed to be amazing. It seems really relaxing and I really want to do the Kandy to Badulla train ride, which looks just stunning. We’ve booked a good mix of beaches, some time in a safari tent to hopefully see elephants in the wild.
For my bag, I’ll most likely take the Quiksilver 40L Pack because it has the built-in wet pack for my bikinis. It’s also a great size for a week-long trip in a warm climate.
Japan — Ben Barras, Creative Director
Japan is definitely my best travel destination recommendation. The culture, the streets, the architecture, the inspiration you get from all of that is amazing. The food is also fascinating. It’s where I’m most planning to go. Tokyo obviously, but also visiting the mountains. You can go snowboarding, which I haven’t done for years.
I have a Vibe 25L Backpack which you can pack a lot in. The thing I like most about it is that it’s compact, but still fits plenty in. I’ll pair that up with a larger travel bag for the rest of my things and use the backpack to get around day to day.
Berlin — Phil Hayes, Executive VP of Global Design
For me, it’s definitely Berlin. I’m particularly excited about the fashion, which I hear is pretty full on. Also the art galleries and history. Food, nightlife. Everything I’ve heard about Berlin is pretty cool, so I’m going to suck as much as I can out of it. World’s Global Style Network had the Berlin shopping list that came out recently, so I’m going to follow that through as well.
Bag wise, it will be the Quiksilver X Collab Bag. It’s the 25L Anti-theft Backpack. It’s normally my go-to bag for city trips because it’s super easy to lock on the plane and in bars, and it’s just the right amount of space.
28.Which of the Pacsafe bag is a good choice for beach travel
A.The Vibe 25L Backpack. B.The Quiksilver 40L Pack.
C.The Quiksilver X Collab Bag. D.25L Anti-theft Backpack.
29.If you are interested in fashion, which destination should you choose
A.Berlin. B.Japan. C.Hong Kong. D.Sri Lanka.
30.What can you enjoy in all the three places mentioned
A.Beautiful beaches. B.Fascinating art. C.Amazing food. D.Cool snowboarding.

11.
根据第一段“This wasn’t because female-named hurricanes were any more severe; rather that people’s behavior changed.(这并不是因为女性命名的飓风更严重;而是人们的行为改变了)”以及第二段“People unconsciously say to themselves: how could I be killed by a hurricane called Candy (人们无意识地对自己说:我怎么会被一个叫糖果的飓风杀死呢?)”
根据划线词上文“People unconsciously say to themselves: how could I be killed by a hurricane called candy (人们不知不觉地对自己说:我怎么会被一个叫糖果的飓风杀死呢?)”

根据第一段第一句“In the mid-1950s, I was a bored boy student who believed that doing any more than necessary was wasted effort. (在20世纪50年代中期,我还是一个无聊的男生,认为做任何不必要的事情都是白费力气。)”可知,作者当年认为做必要的事就足够了。故选C项。
19.
细节理解题。由第四段中的“Mrs. Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had appeared on our homework sheets. (托顿夫人经常在一排排的课桌前走来走去,按照作业纸上的问题出现的顺序一个接一个地要求学生回答问题。)”和第五段中的“Since I was seated near the middle of about 35 students, it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to answer. (因为我坐在大约35个学生中间,所以很容易弄清楚我可能要回答哪些问题。)”可知,因为老师总是有规律的提问,坐在中间位置的作者已经摸清老师的提问规律,提前确定自己要回答作业纸上的哪些问题。因为老师总是用自己熟悉的方式提问,所以作者可以想出该回答哪些问题。故选D项。
20.
细节理解题。由第六段中的“However, what I failed to expect was that several students were absent. As Mrs. Totten made her way from the beginning of the class, I tried my best to think of and decide which math problem I would get. I tried to work it out before she got to me. but my brain couldn’t function at that moment. (然而,我没有想到的是有几个学生缺席了。当托顿夫人从这堂课开始时一路走过来,我尽我最大的努力去思考和决定我要做哪道数学题。我想在她找到我之前解决问题。但那一刻我的大脑无法运转。)”和第七段“When Mrs. Totten reached my desk, she asked what answer I’d got for problem No.14. ‘I…I didn’t get anything,’ I answered, and my face burned with shame. (托顿夫人走到我的桌前,问我第14题的答案是什么。‘我……我不知道,’我回答,我的脸因羞愧而发红。)”可知,因为那天有几个学生没来上学,破坏了回答问题的顺序,作者就没有回答出问题。故选A项。
21.
通读全文,尤其是最后一段“I thought a lot after class that day. Till now, I still remember what happened in that math class. If I could choose one school day that taught me the most, it would be that one.
