After a tough year, friends have proven they have always been there for us. Choose Friendship Day 2021 to appreciate the connections you have in life or use this holiday to reach out to past friends and rekindle that bond.
National Friendship Day occurs every year on the first Sunday of August — August 7, 2022 — and celebrates the importance of loving, platonic relationships. For more than a century, we’ve celebrated the strength of friendship, and thanks to social media, we’re able to continue celebrating with our friends no matter where they are in the world.
Humans are the most social beings on earth: we need to relate to others, just as Abraham Maslow exposed in his Hierarchy of human needs. Our sociological needs motivate our behavior, encouraging us to make interpersonal relationships and connect with others on a deeper level. With such a huge need for human connection with people other than our significant other, it’s no wonder that we celebrate an entire holiday based on the importance of friendship.
National Friendship Day was originally a marketing strategy for Hallmark Cards in the 1930s. Founder Joyce Hall designated the day would take place on August 2 and decided it would be a day to celebrate the people closest to you — and send them a card or two in the process. It soon became a bigger deal than originally planned when the 1935 U.S. Congress pronounced the first Sunday of August as National Friendship Day.
The holiday continued gaining popularity, and in 1998 the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship. In 2011, during their 65th session, the U.N. designated July 30 International Friendship Day.
Nowadays, we celebrate National Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August. Thanks to advancements in technology, it is easier to get in touch with friends, to share, and to be thankful for them.
This August 2, celebrate the lover you create and share with the family that you chose — the friends who get you through hard times and cheer you on during your most successful moments.

I’d thought I was ready for the challenges of graduate school. But when I left Nepal to further my study abroad, I felt as if I had dropped into the vast ocean where every fish swam faster than I could. The coursework wore me out. Instead of being the outgoing person I had been, I suddenly became a shy girl. Worse still, my research was not progressing at the pace I had expected.
I needed something to return to my old self. After a conversation with my friend, I thought I should go to help others. Then I began to search online for volunteer opportunities. Luckily, a local organization that drives senior citizens to their destinations was looking for volunteers. I thought it might be just what I needed.
I was a bit anxious before my first ride, as I had not interacted much with people outside school. But I quickly recovered my poise when I picked up an old woman who wanted to go downtown. She talked with me like my grandmother and shared how thankful she was. Connections like this and the smiles on my passengers’ faces encouraged me to continue driving.
I started to volunteer about three hours every weekend — time I otherwise would have spent oversleeping or looking through information on social media. Sharing stories with my passengers was rewarding. And seeing how eager they were to spend time going out inspired me to think about how to spend my time which used to slip away.
As my confidence grew, I began opening up to my fellow graduate students about the ups and downs in my research and was surprised to discover that all my fellows faced the same challenge—even the student who I had considered to be on top of everything. As these connections grew, my natural personality began to reappear.

Humans are very social creatures. In addition to verbal (语言的) communication, we also use our bodies to help us better express our thoughts and feelings. This non-verbal communication is known as body language.
Body language includes things like facial expressions, eye contact and posture (姿势). It actually developed as a form of communication before humans could speak or write. We can tell a lot about what a person is thinking or feeling just by looking at them.
In fact, body language is so common that you may not even realize that you are communicating many messages to others every day without even using words. For example, you might move your head from side to side to express the word “no” instead of actually saying the word. Or, you might give a “thumbs (拇指) up” to show that you like or agree with something.
But now that we are spending more time online, we may not have as many in-person interactions as before. Because of this, our means of non-verbal communication has changed, but is still an important way to express our thoughts.
Our “digital body language” is becoming increasingly important as we change how we communicate. Instead of using voice messages, we can video chat with our friends to show them our smiling face. Another way to express our emotions digitally is through emojis When we are communicating online, we are only revealing the content and leaving out tones and facial expressions. That’s when emojis can help in communication.
Whether using video chat to show our expression or sending an emoji, don’t forget the importance of digital body language and non-verbal communication.

As COVID-19 broke out and spread in the world, many countries are changing their social habits to reduce the risk of spreading the novel coronavirus(新型冠状病毒). Here are some of the ways that greeting habits are changing around the world.

Newspapers in France have begun publishing advice on how to replace kissing on the cheek. French etiquette(礼仪) expert Philippe Lichtfus said that simply looking into a person's eyes can be enough as a greeting.
Spain
The outbreak could also hit one of Spain's most important traditions—in the week before Easter, known as Holy Week, the faithful (信徒) queue up to kiss the hands or feet of sculptures of the Virgin Mary and the saints, seeking their protection. It's said that the ceremony could be banned.
Iran
Traditionally, people in Iran shake hands to greet one another. But today, a video has been popular in Iran, showing three friends meeting, hands in their pockets and two of them wearing masks, tapping their feet against each other as a greeting.

I had to knock on the taxi to get his attention. Finally, the driver, a man about 60, looked up from behind the wheel and apologised, “I’m sorry, but I was reading a letter.” He sounded as if he had a cold or a cough.
Since I was in no hurry, I told him to finish his letter. He shook his head, explaining that he had already read it several times and almost knew it by heart. Curious, I asked whether it was from a child or maybe a grandchild. “This isn’t family,” he replied, “though he might just as well have been are regular member of the family. Old Ed and I grew up together.”
They were always friends. But since he moved away from the neighbourhood 30 years ago, it’d generally just been postcards at Christmas time between them. A couple of weeks ago, Ed died. “I should have kept in touch.” He repeated this, more to himself than to me. To comfort him, I said sometimes we just didn’t seem to find the time. “But we used to find the time,” he said. “Take a look.” He handed the letter over to me.
The first sentence “I’ve been meaning to write for some time, but I’ve always delayed it.” reminded me of myself. It went on to say that he often thought about the good times they had had together. When I read the part where it said “Your friendship really means a lot to me, more than I can say because I’m not good at saying things like that”, I found myself nodding in agreement.
We had gone several kilometres and were almost at my hotel, so I read the last paragraph: “So I thought you’d like to know that I was thinking of you.” And it was ended with “Your Old Friend, Tom.”
“I thought your friend’s name was Ed,” I said.
“I’m Tom,” he explained. “It’s a letter I wrote to Ed before I knew he’d died. I never put it in the mailbox. I guess I should have written it sooner.” His face was pale as he wiped his eyes with a handkerchief.

We are all born social and company to live happy and fruitful life. Healthy and supportive mutual relationships help reduce stress and promote the physical, mental and emotional well-being by building skills like time management, assertiveness(自信), sociability and empathy.
Making friends has made me feel secure. However, I have to be cautious to pick up friends sharing similar tastes and values. In addition, having added to one’s circle of friends helps one feel supported.
It is true that finding time to cultivate relationships is all about effective time management. My busy uncle finds time to catch up with family and friends during his tea and lunch breaks. Similarly my friend Somya uses her time on her way back home from work in her chauffeur-driven car to catch up with people. The modern inventions of SMS and e-mail help send wishes for birthdays and anniversaries to show your love and care.
Assertiveness is as much applicable to relationships. My friend Mohana emphasizes that neither being a passive observer nor being aggressive helps relationships. It is assertiveness in our relationships that opens the lines of effective communication. It emphasizes helping friends in need and also strengthens mutually supportive relationships.
It is also true that assertiveness by intuition promotes discretion of friends and helps Lalitha distinguish positive people from drains of energy. She can easily figure this out by the flow of the conversation, the way each feels understood, accepted and supported, and by how I feel, happy, bored or energized in the relationship. It also helps to know whether all benefit from each other’s positive aspects.
Handling stress in life is all about cultivating mutually supportive relationships and working on them. Manisha always says she feels great when sharing her feelings after a hard clay with people who share similar ideas. Actually we all need someone who would not just hear us, but listen to us, and we need to cultivate the art of listening and understanding people.

22.______ helps build mutually supportive social relationships.

C.Manisha won’t get supportive social relationship.
D.Somya has trouble managing her time effectively.
24.What is the best title of the passage
A.Build Mutually Supportive relationship B.Applicable Relationships
C.Pick up Friends Supporting Us D.Relieve the Pressure in Life
The impression you make at the beginning of an interview is very important. Employers often decide to hire someone in the first three minutes of the interview. They judge you by your appearanice, attitude and manners.
A friendly smile when you walk into the room is important. A smile shows a confident and positive attitude.
When you introduce yourself, make eye contact with the interviewer. Some interviewers offer a handshake. Others don’t.
Try to be as natural as possible. But pay attention to your body language. The way you sit, walk, gesture, use your voice and show feelings on your face is all parts of your body language. It makes the interviewer know how you feel about yourself and the situation you are in. Are you positive about yourself Your abilities Your interest in the job
Speak clearly and loudly enough. Show interest and enthusiasm in your voice. When you speak, look at the interviewer. Also, don’t say negative things about yourself, or former employers.
Listen to questions carefully. If you don’t understand a question, ask the interviewer to repeat it or explain:
“I’m sorry, but I didn’t catch that.”
“I’m not sure exactly what you mean.”
Almost everyone is nervous in a job interview. Interviewers know that. They don’t expect you to be totally calm and relaxed. But they expect you to try to control your nervousness. They expect you to show confidence in your ability to do the job.
At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for her or his time.

On a sunny day in May at the Saline Royale in Arc-et-Senans, France, a group of about 20 primary schoolchildren, armed with a notebook about plants, flowers and nature, are getting practical experiences with the world of gardening and learning about the natural environment.
The children then explore the gardens of the Saline Royale, where each class is led by a professional gardener. Students are able to dig, plant, use tools and develop skills while learning about the flowers and plants around them.

After eight years of planning and billions of dollars in spending, the Middle East’s first world’s fair, Expo 2020, opened on October 2 in Dubai, with hopes that the months-long extravaganza(盛会) will draw both visitors and global attention to the city.
The COVID-19 pandemic pushed Expo 2020 back a year and may affect how many people are able to come to UAE, the United Arab Emirates. But the six-month-long exhibition still offers Dubai an important opportunity to show its unique East-meets-West appeal as a place where everyone is welcome to do business.
More than 190 nations are using their pavilions(展厅) at the huge Expo site to highlight their greatest tourist attractions and discoveries. The US pavilion, for example, has a copy of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, and China’s pavilion focuses on the country’s space future inventions. The UAE’s falcon-shaped pavilion, by far the site’s largest, takes visitors on a two-hour-long experience that explores the country’s 50-year history.
Other attractions include an African food hall, a huge mirror-like water fountain, a recently excavated(挖掘) royal Egyptian mummy, concerts and performances from around the world, and the option to dine on a $500 three-course meal with glow-in-the-dark cuisine.
Since the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, world’s fairs have long served as an opportunity for nations to meet, exchange ideas, present inventions, promote culture and build business ties. They have also seen the debut of some of humanity’s most important innovations. The first world’s fair held in the US in 1876 saw Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone, the typewriter and a mechanical calculator make their first public appearances. Have you ever wondered why other people don’t see things the same way you do Isn’t it confusing that you don’t necessarily share the same viewpoints even when you come from the same family Why can’t they just see it my way The scientific explanation comes from cognitive (认知的) psychology; it’s a mental process known as information processing.
From a psychological perspective, you have your own internal set of core values, memories, and quality of emotion. With every external event you experience, the information comes in and is filtered (过滤) through your emotions, memories, and values. How you “see” yourself, others, and the world you live in will be flavored by what you’ve experienced or believe to be true. In other words, you don’t see things as they are — you see things as you are.
You have a process for filtering information and it may strike you as being odd, to say the least, when others don’t subscribe to the same beliefs, thoughts, and opinions. What if you considered, even for just a moment, that what you are perceiving is only one possibility — and that there are several other ways to interpret a situation
In every walk of life, you find yourself defending your beliefs, arguing for how you remember something that happened, and positioning yourself to influence others to see things your way. But what if you’re missing the important point that your differences are what make life colorful Those differences are what stimulate your mind and emotions. Without differences, life would be dull. There would be no “aha” moments if you knew everything. There would be no inspiration in the form of art, music, poetry, style, or communication.
There will be times in your life when boundaries may need to be enforced with others and, at the end of the day, you want to feel understood and appreciated. Learning to honor your viewpoints while others have their own is vital for coexisting in a world where every individual is perfectly unique.
37.How does the author introduce the topic of the passage
A.By raising questions. B.By listing opinions.
C.By quoting sayings. D.By making a comparison.
38.What plays the vital role in information processing
A.Current situation. B.External opinions.
C.Personal experience. D.Physical condition.
39.Which statement will the author probably agree with
A.Learning to accept differences. B.Pursuing perfection in daily life.
C.Following others unconditionally. D.Arguing for your own viewpoint.
40.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.Why Nobody Understands You B.How Come You Are So Unique
C.Who Is to Blame for Disagreement D.What Makes You Think You’re Right

或者,你可以‘竖起大拇指’来表明你喜欢或同意某件事)”可知,作者通过这两个例子,证明本段的主题句“In fact, body language is so common that you may not even realize that you are communicating many messages to others every day without even using words (事实上,身体语言是如此普遍,你甚至可能没有意识到,你每天都在用语言和别人交流很多信息)”,由此推知,第三段中提到这两个例子是为了证明我们是多么低估肢体语言。故选D项。
11.
根据倒数第二段第一、二句“Our ‘digital body language’ is becoming increasingly important as we change how we communicate. Instead of using voice messages, we can video chat with our friends to show them our smiling face. (随着我们交流方式的改变,我们的‘数字肢体语言’正变得越来越重要。我们不再使用语音信息,而是和我们的朋友视频聊天,向他们展示我们的笑脸)”可知,由于交流方式的改变,在线交流中可以使用视频聊天来进行信息交流,所以数字肢体语言变得越来越重要。故选A项。
12.
根据倒数第二段第三句“Another way to express our emotions digitally is through emojis (表情符号). When we are communicating online, we are only revealing the content and leaving out tones and facial expressions. That’s when emojis can help in communication. (另一种数字表达情绪的方式是通过表情符号。当我们在网上交流时,我们只显示内容,省去了语气和面部表情。那时,表情符号可以帮助沟通)”可推知,表情符号可以弥补纯文字交流的不足,让对方知道,你在表达这些文字时的情感,有利于沟通。故选C项。

17.细节理解题。由第五段尾句“And it was ended with ‘Your Old Friend, Tom.’ (它以‘你的老朋友,汤姆’结束。)”,以及倒数第二段“‘I’m Tom,’ he explained. ‘It’s a letter I wrote to Ed before I knew he’d died.’ (‘我是汤姆,’他解释说。‘这是我在得知艾德去世前写给他的一封信。’)”可知,信的结尾写了寄信人的名字汤姆,汤姆就是这个司机。所以信是汤姆写的。故选A项。
由第三段“A couple of weeks ago, Ed died. ‘I should have kept in touch.’ He repeated this, more to himself than to me. (几周前,艾德去世了。‘我应该保持联系。’他重复了这句话,更多的是对他自己而不是我)”可推断出,汤姆很后悔没有和埃德保持联系。故选D项。

(这是我在得知艾德去世前写给他的一封信。我从未把它塞进邮箱里。我想我本应该早点写的。)”,以及最后一段“When I got to my hotel room I didn’t unpack right away, I had to write a letter and post it.
