When she looked around her house, Betty Margaret saw lots of electronics. Along with the usual things like her laptop and smart__phone,__there were all of her kids' electronic devices: cell phones, video game devices and more! There seemed to be more than enough ways for her and her three children to be online all day, every day.
Ms. Margaret worried that her kids were becoming too dependent on the Internet and electronics. Then she began to reread one of her favorite books, Henry Thoreau's Walden, which gave Ms. Margaret an idea. Thoreau spent 2 years in a simple cabin without running water, having to grow his own food. Maybe she and her family could live without such luxuries as computers and electronic devices for a while.
Ms. Margaret talked with her kids and explained that she wanted the family to try living for 6 months without the Internet, cell phones, TV, and video games. Ms. Margaret writes articles
for a newspaper in Australia, and had written several books as well. She told her children that if they agreed, she would write a book about their experience and they could go on a trip abroad with the money from sales of the book. Her three children agreed, and “the experiment”, as Ms. Margaret called, began.
Over the course of the experiment, the children had different reactions to life without electronics. Before the experiment began, Anni, the eldest of the children, read books more than her younger brother and sister. She therefore had a relatively easy adjustment to the family's new__lifestyle. Anni could also use the
library's computer for her homework. Bill,__who loved to play video games before the experiment began, had to find a way to spend all of his new free time. He started to spend more time practicing his saxophone Susan, the youngest child in the family, had the hardest time adjusting__to life without electronics. She felt restless for the first weeks and later, influenced by her elder sister, gradually began to find interest in the novel experiences brought by various books.

Ms. Margaret
believed they all came out better for the experience. The
children had a lot more interaction with each other and
with their mother. Now that they could not text others, they
had to actually see each other and talk. Meanwhile, the
family played board games together, cooked meals together
and read the newspaper together. Bill ended up developing a
serious interest in music, and in Susan's case, she improved her grades in school.

The book became an immediate hit and aroused great interest
among many parents. In her book and in interviews about the
book, Ms. Margaret described the pleasant changes that
happened in her family and the progress her children had made.
She encouraged families to set aside special “screen free days”
where families unplugged themselves and spent time together,
which was exactly what her family had agreed to do after
returning from an enjoyable family trip abroad. (共7张PPT)

One summer afternoon, when I was about eight years of age, I was looking at a beautiful rainbow. Bending from the sky, it seemed to be losing itself in a thick wood about a quarter of a mile distant.
“Do you know, Gracie,” said my brother, who was just recovering from a severe illness, weak and tired, “that if you should go to the end of the rainbow, you would find there
precious treasures?”
“Is it truly so?” I asked.
“Truly so,” answered my brother, with a smile but a very serious face.
Now, I was a simple hearted child who believed everything that was told to me; so, without another word, I rushed out toward the wood. My brother called after me as loudly as he was able to, but I did not take any notice of him.
I cared nothing for the wet grass; on and on I ran. I was so sure that I knew just where that rainbow ended. But when I
reached the cedars (雪松林), the end of the rainbow was not there! Abruptly I saw it shining down among the trees a little farther off; so on and on I struggled, through the thick bushes, till I came within the sound of a stream. I reached the bank of the stream, and I could see it a little way off on the other side. I crossed the stream on a fallen tree, and still ran on, though my muscles were aching and my knees shaking.
Suddenly I met in my way a large porcupine (豪猪). I ran away from him as fast as my tired feet would carry me. In my fright and hurry I forgot to keep my eye on the rainbow, and
when, at last, I remembered and looked for it, it was nowhere in sight!
When I saw that it was indeed gone, I burst into tears, for I had lost all my treasures, and had nothing but muddy feet and a wet and torn dress. So I set out for home.

One Saturday morning when Susan went, as usual, to Thompson's hotel, to get the pay for her mother's washing for the guests, which amounted to five dollars, she found the hotel keeper in the yard.
He was apparently in a bad temper with some dealers with whom he had been bargaining. He held in his hand an open wallet, full of bills. Hardly noticing the child as she made her
request, except to swear (骂骂咧咧) at her for troubling him when he was busy, he handed her a bank note.
Glad to escape so easily, Susan rushed out of the gate, and then, pausing to pin the money safely in the folds of her worn scarf, she discovered that he had given her two bills instead of one. She looked around. Nobody was near to share her discovery, and her first impulse was joy at the unexpected prize.
“It is mine, all mine,” she murmured. “I will buy my mother a new coat with it, and she can give her old one to sister Mary, and then Mary can go to the Sunday school with me next
winter. I wonder if I can buy a pair of shoes for brother Tom, too.”
At that moment she realized that the hotel keeper must have given it to her by mistake,__and therefore she had no right to it, as she was always told by her mother the__Golden__Rule — What belongs to you is yours, and what doesn't belong to you should not be accepted.
But again the voice of temptation whispered, “He gave it, and how do you know that he did not intend to make you a present__of it Keep it; he will never know it, even if it should be
a mistake; he had too many such bills in that great wallet,so it doesn't matter if missing one.” While this conflict was going on in her mind between good and evil, she was hurrying homeward as fast as possible.

Katie was exceptionally small. We were in the fifth grade, but she was as short as a third grader. Although her body was small, Katie was big at heart. She had a sharp mind, too. Sometimes she got her share of teasing, but Katie knew how to handle it. All the kids who knew Katie liked her a lot.
Katie loved helping others in the class, so whenever someone was stuck on the computer he always called her for help and
advice. Katie loved jokes and she always had a joke that would cheer someone up whenever he was down. She was truly the most generous friend anyone could ask for.
But the other day she was in big trouble. She was such a sweet kid; a third grade teacher always dreamed of having a classroom filled with students like Katie. She was never ever a discipline problem. I just couldn't imagine why she had made her parents so angry.
It seemed that Katie had been running up sizable charges in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great
homemade lunch each day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit down with Katie would solve the problem,__but failed. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation.
So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. “Why are you charging lunches, Katie What happens to your homemade
lunch?” I asked. “I lose it,” she responded. I leaned back in my chair and said, “I don't believe you, Katie.” She didn't care. “Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie?” I took a new track. “No. I just lose it,” she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.

About a half mile behind our Minnesota farm lay a pond. In summer, my brother Harry and I would run through a stand of oak trees to skip stones there. The pond wore a collar of black mud. It was not a place for swimming.
In late summer, the pond would be covered by green and bubbly scum(起泡的浮渣). Sometimes a strong, unpleasant smell rose from it. We stayedaway.
When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place. One day when ice covered it, Harry said to me, “Try walking across.”
The ice looked solid. No water showed through it, but I hesitated. “Go ahead,” Harry urged. “Try it. You're lighter than I am. If the ice holds, we can run and slide carefully on it. It'll be fun.” I wanted to please Harry, and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice. I began to slide across the pond.
In the middle of the pond, the ice gave way with a sudden crack(裂缝)! I stretched out(伸展) my arms. The next thing I
knew was that I was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the ice with arms outstretched on the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water. I thought of the bottom of the pond. I knew it would be black and awful down there, full of mud and maybe rotting creatures.
I tried to climb out of the hole, but when I got a knee on the ice, it broke like window glass. Again and again I tried to get out. Again and again the ice broke into pieces. The hole widened. I was wearing a coat of heavy material. As it became completely wet, it dragged me down. I was tired of the struggle and rested with my
arms stretched out on the ice.
I looked at Harry onshore. He seemed rooted to the spot. “I can't get out!” I screamed when I caught some breath.

struggling again. After what seemed to be centuries of fruitless
waiting, I was on the verge of collapse. Just at that moment, here
dashed Harry with a large, black, V shaped oak branch. Flopping

Once there was a slave named Androcles, who was so badly treated by his master that he resolved to run away from him. He therefore secretly left his master's house and hid himself in a forest, some miles distant from the city.
After wandering about for some time, he came to a large cave, and overcome by hunger and tiredness, he lay down in it, and soon fell fast asleep.
He was suddenly awakened by the roar of a wild beast; a great lion stood right at the mouth of the cave. There was no way he could escape!
Androcles expected nothing else than to be at once torn to pieces, but to his great surprise, the lion came gently towards him, without showing any signs of anger. It gave forth a low and mournful(悲哀的) sound, as if it were begging for his assistance.
As the lion approached him, he noticed that one of its feet was swollen.
He then went up to the lion, took hold of the wounded paw
( 爪 子 ), and examined it as a surgeon would examine a patient. He was not long in finding out the cause of the swelling; for he saw in the ball of the foot a very large thorn(刺). The slave pulled out the thorn, and pressed out of the wound a quantity of matter, which gave the lion immediate relief.
Then, the lion began to show his gratitude by every means in his power. He jumped about like a playful spaniel (西班牙猎犬), wagged his great tail, and licked the hands and feet of his physician. From that moment Androcles became his guest; the lion always shared his prey.
The slave continued to live like this for several months. At length, wandering carelessly through the woods, he was seized by a company of soldiers who were sent by the master to search for him.

For me, it was normal to feel lost at the inter camp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors and the other kids reminded me of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the two mile race around the lake,__I knew I was no one's first choice.
I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners. My body tensed as I heard a counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred! We need a 12 year old who hasn't been in other events to run the two mile race!”
He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.
“But I don't know the way around the lake!”
“You're in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled.
Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last stretch on the field, just throw your head back and run.”
At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.
“On your mark...Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill's heels, a little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!”
I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.
It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto the muddy, wooded trail
that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.

I pulled the car into the garage and got out, just like every night for the past 16 years. The difference was that I wouldn't have a job to take in the morning. I used to be a VP(副总裁) in technology for a national bank until it was closed.
I'd put myheartandsoul into my job. Not only did I work long hours, but I was on call 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. My kids joked that though they were the teenagers,
I was the one who was glued to the cell phone and had to be told not to text at the dinner table.
My wife, Michelle, went back to work full time once my job was threatened. But our kids would be going to college—our son, TJ, was a high school senior, and the girls, Sarah and Tara, were in ninth grade—and I wanted to give them the education and opportunities they deserved. I went up to the house. “I'm sorry, Dad,” TJ said. “I know how much your job meant to you.” His concern was mirrored in the girls' faces. Then Michelle added, “It's going to

Part 2
的五个W一个H上,即who(人物)、 where(地点)、when(时
间)、what(事件)、why(原因)及how(怎样发展)。

My dad,__George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn't understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn't really understand his world either:He was a
livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass(超
过)anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid 70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone(长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off,
riding down the field and look ing for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned__to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb's quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn't sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said,“A job's a big step to growing__up. I'm glad you will be contributing to the household.” My dad's words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do
with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn't interested.I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1: The pay day arrived at
last.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: I understood immediately what my parents were worriedabout.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(I didn't really understand his
world )——不屑(I thought that I would surpass anything he
had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high
school graduation)——抱怨 愤怒( I decided it was not fair that
I had to contribute my money)——?
growth+understanding+responsibility。
Summers in the mid 70s were spent at home shooting baskets,
hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my
future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I
read about sports or practiced my trombone(长号).
Then we began again. This happened over and over... It was
tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I
wasn't sure how much it would amount to. 通过began again及
happened over and over,加上形容词tiring来体现这份工作的
Paragraph 1:The pay day arrived at last. Holding the money I earned through two week's tiring__work, I couldn't contain my joy and kept pondering over the question: how should I spend such a large sum of money Well, I needed a new football because the old one we played had already worn out. Suddenly, Dad's words echoed in my mind, “I'm glad you will be contributing to the family.” “But it's not fair!” another voice reasoned. Torn between the two voices, I finally decided to go half and half. As I neared home, I heard Mom's voice, “We need to buy one.
But...” “But we are currently short of money.” Dad's voice emerged, full of anxiety.
Paragraph 2: I understood immediately what my parents were worrying about. They were talking about the truck engine. True, his truck kept breaking down on the way, which caused his boss's constant complaints. My mental tug of war kept going on when I suddenly realized what I should do. I walked towards them and handed over all the money. “Dad,__this is what I earned. Here you are!” Seeing what I was doing, Dad froze there for a moment but soon he gathered me into his arms,“ You've really
grown__up.” Meanwhile, I saw tears welling up in Mom's eyes. It was on that day that I realized what Dad had accomplished at my age was much greater than I did.I would tell the farmer the next day that I would continue my work—becoming mature means taking up my share of responsibility for my family.

Pumpkin(南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage — I carried an 85 pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14 year old brother, Jason,__was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my points. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I'm unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got
jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork(软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I'm going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I
pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can't get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1:I was stuck for five or six minutes though it felt much longer. ____________________________________________
Paragraph 2:That video was posted the day before Halloween. ________________________________________________________
Noun: Pumpkin; dad; Jason; mom; head; nose
Verb: manage; support; rest; pull
I cannot breathe
in the pumpkin→Jason proposed a way→My mom and dad
came to help me by pulling my head out→Eventually I was
rescued with my nose plugged with pulp.
The post gained many shares and likes→at first,
I was embarrassed; then I was comforted and moved→Both
the pumpkin and I became a celebrity.
(1)In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and
sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin.由compete with, the
I got into a panic as I pressed
firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to
find the right angle, but it was no use.
(1)I felt so scared that my throat tightened and my knees felt
weak.
(2)I froze with terror, too scared to move an inch.
(3)I was seized by a strong sense of horror and my palms were
sweating.
(4)This made me feel sick and shivery.
(5)A flood of fear welled up in me./ Fear flooded over me.
(6)My throat was dry and my face was burning up.
Paragraph 1:I was stuck for five or six minutes though it felt much longer. Trapped in the pumpkin, I gasped for air. My throat was dry and my face was burning up. It was a torment for me. I wrestled with the problem, attempting to squeeze my head out of it, but in vain. So frightened was I that I pulled and banged the pumpkin wildly. Noticing my mounting/growing fear, Jason proposed calling the fire department, while others roared with laughter which made my blood boil. Hearing someone call Dad__for help, I calmed and softened in expectation of his
practical help to save me. He got me to push my__head farther into the pumpkin so that Mom's hand could reach in and loosen my ponytail. I emerged with squash conditioned hair, a sore chin and my nose plugged with pulp. It was then that I realized my mom__had been filming the whole time.
Paragraph 2:That video was posted the day before Halloween. When I logged in my Facebook, I found myself shocked by the abundant likes I received from those who had seen my video. By the end of that day, the video started racking up hundreds of thousands of views. However, browsing their messages and
reading their positive response, I felt a wave of warmth surging through me, greatly touched by their heartfelt comfort as well as their sharing of similar nasty experiences. Tell you what, when I went on a youth camp, I was recognized by children I'd never met. The pumpkin also became a minor celebrity. Passers by and trick or treaters would knock and ask, “Which is Rachel's pumpkin?” before taking selfies with it.
“Try to show, not to tell”
To tell:She felt cold.
To show:She pulled her collar up, tightened her scarf, shoved her hands deep into her pockets and turned her face away from the biting wind.
She felt
exhausted. She felt exhausted and sat by the
stream, resting her aching feet.
(1)To tell: He was happy.
To show:His smile broadened from ear to ear.
He clapped his hands together and jumped up and down with
joy.
He giggled and squealed with excitement.
(2)To tell: My mother was hopeful.
To show:My mother's eyes were sparkling with hope.
(3)To tell:I enjoyed the beautiful sunshine.
To show:When I was bathed in the sunlight, it felt like the
amber sunshine was kissing every inch of my skin.
(4)To tell: He felt very angry.
To show: He felt so angry that he stormed out of the room,
slamming the door furiously behind him.
He clenched her fists and jammed them into his sides.
He growled at me through clenched teeth.
3.“To Show”高分法则

One fall,my wife Elli and I had a single goal:to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world”—the town of Churchill in Manitoba,Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous.
Polar bears—like all wild animals—should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear,I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner,a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified,Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though-he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way,but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇),I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last through 30 more
minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears' eyes, but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫),the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1:A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp.________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: At that very moment, the helicopter
arrived._____________________________________________
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the
bear defense actions we knew.
yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells
into the air.
He pulled
and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the
wooden fence posts. He just kept trying to tear down the fence
with his massive paws (爪子).
Try to show, not to tell”
(1)To tell: We were frightened.
To show: At the sight of it, I could feel a flicker of fear flooding
over me, and Elli was stunned, her mouth hanging open.
(2) To tell: The bear was angry.
To show:He exposed his sharp teeth, snarling at us, as he ran
forward.
The furious creature stood on his back legs and began to snap
at the fence like a demon.
It seemed that his mouth was dripping with blood and his eyes
were red with rage.
Paragraph 1: A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. He exposed his sharp teeth, snarling at us, as he ran forward. And again the furious creature stood on his back legs and began to snap at the fence like a demon. It seemed that his mouth was dripping with blood and his eyes were red with rage. At the sight of it, I could feel a flicker of fear flooding over me, and Elli was stunned, her mouth hanging open. It was only then that my mind began to race. Once again, I plucked up courage to blast him with pepper spray,__but without success. Then all of a sudden, came a crash of the fence falling down.
Paragraph 2: At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. It landed in a clearing, not far from our camp, and the loud__noises from the rescue helicopter scared the bear. For an instant, he froze, but after a while, he started to charge at us again. “Elli!” I shrieked. “Look out!”We immediately stepped aside, spun round and galloped towards the helicopter. The moment we were into the helicopter, we collapsed, gasping with relief. As it took off, we could see the bear was hungrily eating the bread we had made. What a hungry bear! After we returned home safe and sound, we realized that something should be done for bears.
(1)The twinkling stars seemed the helicopter driven by Tom to
pick her up away from this terrible forest.
(2)These words like a penetrate of sunshine warmed his heart.

(3)Mac felt what happened just now was like a bad dream.
(4)I stared at the high walls and shuddered as I thought of Mr
Creakle. How I would have loved to storm inside and let all of
the boys escape—like freeing caged sparrows.

(5)Mr Lang glared at Xiaoma with his burning eyes, whose
anger was just like a volcano that was to erupt at any moment.
(6)A thump, thump, thump, like heavy footsteps, was coming
closer.
紧张”,几乎所有人都会翻译成She was extremely anxious.
She had her heart in
her mouth.
(1)The hair on the back of my neck rose when I heard the
scream.
(2)The icy wind started howling, cutting my face like a sharp
knife.

(4)My heart broke in about a million pieces.
(5)She was half dead with fear.
(6)The backpack weighs a ton.

(1)Even the cars are afraid of the wolves here.
(2)Watching the wolf swallowed by the road, Mac sank down
to the back seat.

“I'm going to miss you so much, Poppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents,__and smiled, trying not to let his emotions(情绪) get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control.
They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it,” he said. “I'll see you back home in a month, okay?” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy's mother turned to the dog,__“Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn't seem interested in her dinner, her favourite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn't.
They offered the dog some of her favourite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn't her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. “What should we do to cheer Poppy up?” asked Dad. “We've tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,” smiled
Mom. “Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let's get a little dog for Poppy.”
It didn't take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging(摆动)ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother—loving, sweet, yet absent minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David,__my eight year old brother, and I unwillingly said goodbye to all of our friends. Who knew if we'd ever see them again Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we'd returned home to get the purse and traveler's checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept:“You stand outside the door and play lookout (放哨) while I go, and I'll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind:“Honey, where are the kids?”“What?! Oh, Gosh...I thought they were being awfully quiet.”We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren't about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom
suddenly got a great idea:Why didn't we find a house with a likely looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections (反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1:The next day we remembered the brand new tent we brought with us.______________________________________
Paragraph 2:We drove through several states and saw lots of sights along the way.______________________________________
第一段:根据首句中的关键词“we remembered the brand new
the sights along the way”可推断出,续写部分可适当进行环境
Paragraph 1:The next day we remembered the brand new tent we brought with us.Dad exchanged a glance with me. Why not camp to satisfy Mom Just then an ideal campsite nestling on the edge of a lake spread before us. Giving us a wink, Dad pulled up beside a brightly colored tent,__from where some campers peeped out and greeted us warmly. Letting out a scream of thrill, Mom located a clearing and immediately guided us to pitch the tent. However, when Dad was about to put up our tent, it suddenly hit him that Mom again, had left it completely, as well as the camping
equipment in the hotel. Speechlessly, Dad had to go back to fetch it to continue our camping. At dusk, against the deep blue sky, we together with other campers gathered around, exchanging yummy snacks with each other in the company of fire. Our hearty laughter was dissolved into absolutely good night.
Paragraph 2:We drove through several states and saw lots of sights along the way. I looked out of the car window, winding rivers, lofty mountains, sunny beaches and deep valleys holding me entirely in their fascination. Every time we got to a new place, Mom would cheer up like a child. She held our hands in her
hands, leading us around the big city, the small town and the nice nature. So amazing! Indeed, the family trip—a trip of pure magic, blessed me with not only fantastic landscapes but enlightenment of trust and love between people, even strangers. It was thanks to Mom's forgetfulness and sweetness that my childhood was filled with a mixture of fun and love. Suddenly, Mom's scream awoke me with a start,“Oh! Gosh... Where is my purse?”
①The little boy said sorry to his mother.
②The little boy hung his head and mumbled an apology to his
mother.
① She went to catch the butterfly.
②She crept along the path, bent over swiftly and cupped her
hands around the butterfly gently.
(1)He was overwhelmed with joy, singing and dancing in the
rain.
(2)Standing beside the empty road, they looked up into the sky,
feeling the precious peace from within.
(3)Encouraged by the teacher's words, Lucy raised her hand,
whispering,“I volunteer.”
(1)Friday kissed and hugged his father, crying, laughing,
jumping about, dancing, singing and then crying again.
(2)He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to
let his emotions get the better of him.
(3)He raised his head happily, bounced to fetch the red car,
and handed it to Cater with a big smile spreading across his
face.
(4)His hand suddenly shot out and grabbed my ear, pinching
(掐;拧)it tightly. Terror seized me.
(5)He slipped and tumbled down the stairs.
(6)Joyfully, Joe threw his arms around my neck and hugged
me.
(7)Arriving at the mouth of a cave, she sniffed, looked around,
and then crept through its narrow entrance.
(8)Yesterday I fell ill again and lay in bed all day in despair,
neither eating nor drinking.
(1)The student smiled bitterly when his teacher caught him
copying his homework.
(2) I staggered to my feet, stumbled along the corridor and
burst breathlessly into the room.
(3)She held her mother's hand tightly and said, “I do hope
that you could forgive me.”
(4)The boy skipped happily along beside me.

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled(骑行) along alone, he thought
fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him.“Man, that's a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all, but a wolf,__quickly catching up with him.
Mac's heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side
again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶).
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he'd be easily caught up and the wolf's teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn't think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit
later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1:The car abruptly stopped in front of him.
_______________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:A few minutes later, the other two cyclists
arrived._________________________________________________
Mac
Mac
Paragraph 1:The car abruptly stopped in front of him.
Paragraph 1:The car abruptly stopped in front of him.“Get into the car,”Paul shouted at Mac. Mac jumped off the bike, dashed towards the car and slid into it without delay. He slammed the car door wildly as the hungry wolf was almost reaching him and tearing him into pieces! What a narrow escape! The hungry wolf seemed unwilling to give up its prey,so it kept growling outside the window. The frightened three sat inside trembling with fear and gasped. After what seemed a long time, the exhausted wolf gave up and walked away, disappearing into the woods.
Paragraph 2:A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived.“Thank God, it's nice to see you again. Where did you
go?”Mac held his two friends tightly in arms and was in floods of tears. Mac told them how he narrowly escaped the danger from the fierce wolf. All of them thanked Paul and Becky, who had been so kind to stop their car to save Mac's life, and watched the couple driving off. The three friends went on their bicycle trip and this time no one dared to go alone. Could they still enjoy the rest of the trip Only Mac could tell.

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The__twins__were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed! They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge.
They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff__broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was
too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess__now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then
she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

(3)明线:A surprise;暗线:love between family。
(1)Seeing their crestfallen faces, he told them to clean up the
kitchen while he helped them make breakfast for Mother.

sandwiches.
(5)The early sunlight streaming in, the whole family bathed in
happiness.

Paragraph 1:As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Upon looking he knew what they were up to. “Dad, sorry, it was such a mess,” Jeff__ murmured, lowered his head in shame. “We just want to give Mum a surprise...” Jenna cried with regret and guilt overwhelming her like endless tides. Patting them gently on the shoulders, he told them to clean up the kitchen__and started cooking breakfast__all over again. The twins cheered up and did as told. Within half an hour, under the father's guidance, the
kitchen was cleaned, and they made some French toast and cooked some chicken porridge.
Paragraph 2:The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. “Surprise! Happy Mother's Day, Mummy!” they shouted and hugged her. Shocked and proud, Mother__was so moved that her voice was choked with joy, “Thanks, my kids.” She bit into the toast, declaring that it was the most delicious one she had ever tasted. “If it weren't for Dad's help, we wouldn't finish it,” Jenna added. Just then, Father entered the room and said in a loud voice that he also wanted a bite. A big
laughter burst out and the whole family was enveloped in overwhelming happiness. They felt blissful as if they were in possession of everything. Indeed, love should be made known to loved ones.

You'd think that after hearing Mom and Dad talk about The Trip for a year, I'd be eager to go. But I didn't even want to think about it. “Aren't you excited?” asked Dad, looking up from his laptop. “This is the trip of a lifetime. I'll bet none of your friends will be driving across the United States this summer.”
Exactly, I thought. Nobody I knew was going to pile into an old van,__and drive from California to New York and back in 58
days. Fifty eight days! That was practically my whole summer! But I knew it was useless to protest (抗议).
When Dad was offered a summer off for the first time in his career, he said that he'd always dreamedof driving across the country. So we were going. This was Dad's chance.
I picked up my cat, Max,and buried my face in his fur. He pawed at my ears playfully. Goodbye, summervacation. Goodbye, diving at the lake. Goodbye to hanging out and doing absolutely nothing. Goodbye, Max. I was going to miss this ball of fur. I put him down and laughed as he batted a button across the
floor like a soccer player. He was interested in all small objects.
The closer The Trip got, the harder it was to ignore it. Thick envelopes arrived from places like Indiana, Tennessee, and Arkansas. Night after night, Mom and Dad huddled around the computer, plotting every inch of our 8,000 mile journey.
Three days after school got out, The Trip was finally here. Everything was packed and ready to go. Mom said that we were supposed to leave at 9 a.m. But when Dad noticed a wet spot under the van, I realized we wouldn't be going anywhere for a while. Dad crawled under the van. Car parts sprang up around the van like mushrooms.
Minutes turned into hours. By the time Dad gave Mom the news, it was late afternoon. “I fixed the leak,” said Dad. “But now I can't find one of the fanbolts (螺栓).” Mom organized a search, but in vain.

The Pet Lamb
Almost all the possessions had been sold to buy food and clothing for the family. At last, nothing was left but the pet__lamb,__Daisy. At the thought of parting with the little creature, Mrs. Grant's heart felt sad because the children loved it very much. Having struggled hard, she had to make up her mind to sell the lamb. But she could not ask any child to go for the
butcher. Finally, she went herself with a heavy heart, dragging her leaden feet, and bargained with the butcher for the sale of Daisy.
While the children were all playing with the lamb, the butcher and his boy came to the door. “You see I am here for the lamb,” said the butcher in a loud voice. Hearing this, one child ran to her mother's side, and asked what was happening in alarm. Mrs. Grant gently pushed the child aside, bent down and was about to tell the truth.
“That's my lamb now, Charlie!” said the butcher's boy in a playful tone, going up to Daisy with a rope in his hand.
“No, it is not your lamb. It is ours!” said Charlie, placing himself in front of it.
But the boy, pushing him aside, threw a rope round Daisy's neck, and began to drag the little creature away. The poor lamb bleated very sadly. The cry of grief which fell upon the mother's ears was too much for her, and her heart sank within her. In a moment, begging with tearful eyes, the children were all around their mother with voices choking with sobs for their little pet.
“Pray tell your boy to stop a moment,” she said in husky (沙哑的) tones to the butcher. The boy, at a word, stopped
dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.
In a trembling voice, Mrs. Grant explained to them how badly off they were after their father died. She also added that the kind butcher had given the money for Daisy. With this money, she could buy her children bread to eat.

Marty was new at school. Usually when you're the new kid, you lay low, but not Marty. On his first day, he made a toothpick disappear. One second he was holding the toothpick, and the next second it was gone! Everyone was asking him how he did it. “It's magic! At my old school,__they actually called me Magic Marty,” Marty said proudly. “Is he serious?” I whispered to my friend Brian. “I don't know, but that was pretty cool,” Brian
said, still watching Marty. I knew Marty's magic was fake, but I just couldn't prove it.
Another time, Marty pulled a water bottle out of his bag, along with a cup and carefully poured water into it. Marty got a handful of ice cubes! Applause filled the hallway. When asked how he did it, he just smiled, “Sorry, but that's the first law of magic. A magician never reveals his secrets.”
“Well, he won't have to,” I thought to myself. “I'll reveal his secrets for him.”
That night, at home, I sat at the kitchen table for almost an hour, trying to figure out the trick. “At it again, honey?” My mom watched me wiggle my fingers hopelessly over a cup of water. “He's tricking people!” I cried. “Sounds as if he's trying to make friends.” My mom patted my arm.
Magic Marty had me stumped, but the next day, I caught a lucky break. At lunch, Marty was going on about how he could make things float. He had a ring in one hand and a pencil in the other. That's when I saw it: a thin piece of fishingline tied around the end of the pencil and attached to a button on Marty's shirt! Sure enough, he made the ring “float” by sliding it over
the pencil and hanging it from the line. No one else noticed, and soon the whole cafeteria was clapping. However, I wasn't.

However, Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha's part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you're shy,__but you worked hard on this project. I'd hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr. Roberts had hesitated. “If I let you do your presentation until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?”
Niesha had nodded, grateful for the__chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next class. She had kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking.
Momma studied Niesha's face as she came into the kitchen. “What's wrong, Niesha?” Tears shone in Niesha's brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake.
“Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can't talk to your class?” Momma asked. She set the timer and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue__ribbon__winner. It wasn't easy because I was lacking in confidence—not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my__fears. You just need to find your courage.”

Niesha stared at the precious blue ribbon,

Though having made

“Missy,” I cried to my wife,__“did you put the banana skin on my desk?”“No, honey, Meghan probably did.”As I'd feared, she had missed my real purpose of the question which was to make it clear to her that she hadn't done her job: defend my__desk against the invader—our naughty girl. I abandoned the conversation.
I sat here at the desk, and stared at the screen. I waited patiently for ideas to come to me, exam questions for a test I would give my English students. My wife was off to a reunion somewhere, but I was not alone. Meghan, our 22 month old
daughter, kept me company. Yet her plans that day seemed to go against mine.
She followed a daily routine that was both time consuming and challenging. It included certain basic tasks: watching the fish, sweeping the carpet in her room, climbing up and down her bed.
At first I could concentrate__on designing my test paper. But I was soon sidetracked(分心的). I had not counted on the arrival of the“bib bibs”(“Bib bibs” were birds). “Bib bibs, bib bibs!” Meghan screamed excitedly, her eyes alive with expectation. She insisted that I go with her to the window.
“In a second. Just let me finish this question,” I said. She pulled me by the hand (two fingers, actually) toward the window. I saw myself as a fool, being led to watch the bib bibs. And we did watch them. They chattered and leaped back and forth on the lawn just outside our apartment window. Meghan was absorbed, but as I watched them, I still thought about my work.
Suddenly she rushed out from the room, and I heard her naked feet slapping against the wooden floor outside. She returned__with her doll, Dumpty. She held him up to the window, stretching him out by his two arms and whispering into his
nonexistent ear, “Bib bibs, Dumpty, bib bibs!” Then I left them in conversation and returned to my desk.

It was a beautiful October evening. A cool gentle breeze was blowing as the moon rose high in the sky, and I had gotten home from work about an hour earlier. As I often did after a long day, I went straight to my backyard and did some work in my flower garden before deciding to light the grill to make dinner for my husband and myself. I had only just walked a few steps when I suddenly felt a horrible blow to the right side of my neck. It felt as
though someone had hit me with a baseball bat. I knew that no one was in the yard with me, so no one could have hit me. Totally confused, I reached up and, to my shock and horror,__I realized that I had been shot—with an arrow.
I grabbed the arrow tightly where it had gone through my neck and ran inside, screaming my husband's name. Ed was in the back of the house talking to our daughter, Keila, on the phone. He dropped the phone and ran to me. Ed grabbed me by the shoulers to stop me from running and told me to lie down on the couch. Then he went to call 911. I lay there and prayed.I
didn't know if there was any way that I could survive.
The next hour or so was a crazy, disorderly mix of events. The arrow had come from a young hunter practicing with a compound bow, used for hunting, in his backyard. Luckily, he was using a practice arrow, which is smooth and rounded; a broadhead arrow for hunting would have killed me. He lived across the back street and was shooting to the north. The arrow had bounced and turned back to the south. It went over two, possibly three, fences, through the bushes and an oak tree, between two large hanging baskets, and into my neck as I walked
to the grill. A shot from a compound bow can travel up to 200 miles per hour, or 300 feet per second.

I grew up in a small town where elementary school was a ten minute walk from my house and in an age, not so long ago, when we children could go home for lunch and find our mothers waiting. At the time, I didn't consider this to be so important, although today it certainly would be. Actually, our lunchtimetogether in the past years had had a great influence on my life before I realized it.
Our lunch time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princessin the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practiced my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator and had written a narrator's part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine(藤) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英)appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. “I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots. “From now on,
we'll have roses in this garden.” I immediately protested, “But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.”

It was December. The cold snow was falling as Kelly struggled home from school. How she hated the snow—and everything else about Pinetree,__Wyoming, America. How she missed Thailand.“I hate it here! I want to go home!” Kelly thought.
She reached for a small white envelope in her pocket. In it was an invitation to Jennifer's party. Kelly didn't want to go. She felt
awkward at the thought of being at a party with a bunch of kids she barely knew. She closed her eyes and remembered this time of year people would hold a festival to thank the Mother of Water in Thailand. They used banana__leaves to make a little boat with a candle__lit in it, made a wish for the coming year and set the boat floating on the river.
Kelly sighed and pushed open the door to her parents' restaurant. They were busy working. “Maybe I should go just this once for Mama and Papa. They are so worried that I'm not making any friends.” Kelly went over and tied an apron around
her waist. As she was washing dishes, she told her mother that she had been invited to a party on Friday night. Mama smiled saying now she might be happy in their new home. Kelly nodded thinking Pinetree could never be her home.
On Friday evening, Papa drove Kelly to the party. Jennifer met her at the door and led her into the dining room. Six kids from her classes were seated around the table, on which were sitting small brown cookie houses. They were selecting colorful candies and gluing them to their own houses. Wow, she loved making things. For this part of the party, she could be herself. She
decided to decorate her cottage like one of the golden temples of Thailand. As she was making it, Jennifer wondered how she did it. The others joined staring at Kelly with admiration. Kelly felt a warm glow. Maybe I could fit in here—a little, she thought.
